Making a radial gradient fill follow the shape of a path

I have created an elaborate path. I now want to radial gradient fill the background but I want it fill in such a way that the gradient is shaped like the path, e.g. if I had a star or car shaped path, the radial gradient isn't round but shaped like a star or a car.
I want to get the effect of a shape glowing but in a gradient of different colours as opposed to just one.

Chuck, I had to dig into the darkest depths of my old memory for this, but I had a feeling it was there somewhere.  The black stroke on the outside is on another layer, because I _had_ to harden up the outline!

  • Change the blending mode on the gradient fill within a shape layer?

I can't seem to figure out how to do this, if it is possible.  I have a shape layer with a gradient fill,  that gradient fill layer needs to be set to multiply, by default its normal.  can the be done with scripting?

Indeed it is not that easy to modify the blending mode.
The blending mode is property(1), or property("ADBE Vector Blend Mode"), of the gradient fill.
Normally the blending modes are listed in the BlendingMode object, and mutliply corresponds to BlendingMode.MULTIPLY
But it doesnt work for shape graphics: if you try myGradientFill.property(1).setValue(blendingMode.MULTIPLY); you are out of range.
The value to enter is actually the occurrence of the mode in the dropdownmenu, counting separators...
    so
    myGradientFill.property(1).setValue(4);

  • Something different than radial gradient

Is it possible to create a gradient similar to radial gradient, except that the shape is other than circular?
This image would be the starting point, but I would like the white part fading to black to be another shape (say, a rectangle, a banana, etc.).
    Help is most appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Ori
    Photoshop CS6

Thank you for your quick reply.
I tried your second suggestion and it sort of works.  it is a very good start.  I found that as the white turns gray and darker, it does not blend enough into the black.  If I apply levels and move the black marker inwards, I get a better blend, but I lose the shape.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,

  • Applying multiple fills with radial gradient to one shape - Illustrator CC

Hi, I am following this tutorial (http://vectips.com/tutorials/how-to-create-realistic-vector-leaves-in-illustrator/comment- page-1/#comment-744800) and I am around step 6/7 where I need to add 3 new fills each with a different radial gradient, and then apply them to different areas of the leaf to create a variety of gradial tones.
However, once I have made the new fill I press 'G' to bring up the gradient tool, but when I click inside the leaf area my new fill disappears and the previous radial gradient fill I made is highlighted instead. Hope this makes sense, I just want to apply a slight light green gradient to the corner of the leaf as the tutorial describes in 'Step 7'.
    Please help!

I have this layer selected and the Gradient tool ready
I go to click on the right side of the green area to apply the gradient tool...
The fill I want to use disappears, and the previous fill is selected instead.
I will point out (if it isn't obvious already) that I AM NOT experienced with Illustrator, but I want to understand why this isn't working.

  • Resetting the default shape fill to follow the selected forgeround colour - Bug?

    Hi guys,
Clean install CS6 - When i choose a shape layer and draw a shape it fills to the colour of my selected foreground colour. This is the way i mostly work.
However i have found if you set the colour fill for the shape layer in the top horizontal context menu, it then will not allow me to revert to my original method of working. I simply cant find a way to use the current foreground colour as a default fill for shapes anymore.
    can anyone help me?
    cheers
    chris

    nope.
Basically, the default functionality is FG for shape fill. So say, if i toggle using x it will alteratively create black and white shapes.
If, however i set the colour here (at any time).......
......... it loses that initial functionality and i simply cannot get back to the original behaviour.
I have tried this on 3 colleages machines.

  • Photoshop shape layer gradient fill bug

I use shapes filled with linear gradient turned 90° from its default position. And every now and then, when I select the given shape layer (with the move tool or directly in the layer dialog) the gradient jumps into the default rotation position. The thing is, if this happens, there´s no way I can turn it back.. if I type a value or try to rotate the gradient, it always jumps back.. even if I create a new shape, the rotation function is set to default and won´t move a degree.. Normally a PS restart helped to solve this.. but today, the problem remained even after that.. I will reboot the system and hopefully it will work but.. if anyone has experienced the same problem or has any suggestions, please help.
PS CC 2014 (latest update - though this problem I´ve had since the first CC), OS 10.8.5 (Maybe updating to Mavericks?)
    thanks in advance!

I do not use a mac however on windows if I have a gradient filled shape layer I rotated the the gradient fill.  If I accidentally click the solid fill or pattern fill icon when I click back on the gradient fill icon the angle is the default 90 degrees it does not remember that the fill was set to 0 or 180.
I have not observed any problem with the move tool but I seldom have a shape with a gradient fill.  I normally use a layer style gradient fill on a solid 50% gray filled shape,

  • Help please: gradient to follow shape 'swirl' then fade out to transparent

    Hi
I was wondering if anyone could possible help me on the best way to go about what i would love to achieve...
Above is my shape that I have created (its a swirl to go above some text for a logo) I would like the gradient to follow the swirl around rather than being at a fixed angle that it is currently now.  I am trying to create a light moving type effect really with the CYMK colours... I would like each edge at the LHS end to be either in colour then the centre bit to be fading to transparent (or vice versa - not decided yet) so the end looks like something similar to below.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am relatively new to illustrator and only really know the basics of basics that have seemed to have got my by so far but would love to know & learn more...
    Many thanks,
    T

That's how I got to Carnegie Hall…Practice…Practice…Practice:and of course the subway I took and the ticket I bought.
It was a really good show and worth the effort.
You'll get there once you're familar with the tool.
A hint in CS 5 and beyond you can give an point in the gradient mesh transparency. Select the point and go to the Transparency Panel and lower the opacity and there you are.

  • CS6 Gradient fills on shapes different after reloading?

Is anyone else getting an issue whereby gradient fills have changed when you reopen a PSD.
It's happening too often to me to be something i'm doing accidentally.
Sometimes i save my file and the gradient fill on a shape is be grey, reopen and it's then white.
Fixing it and saving it again seems to then save it properly.
I haven't been able to establish a pattern to reproducing it yet.
Hence why i'm wondering if others have seen this too?
    Rob.

If you define the gradient with Foreground and/or Background in a colour stop(s) of the gradient, then whenever the file is opened, these stop(s) will take on Photoshop's current fore/background colours.
For example, the first preset gradient is called "Foreground to Background" and the grey/black checker in the stops indicate fore/background colour and not a fixed colour.
However, when you reopen a file that has such a gradient-filled Shape and inspect the gradient, the stops will misleadingly look like normal fixed colour stops despite really being fore/background stops.
To make a fore/background stop a fixed colour stop, simply click the stop before saving the file.

  • InDesign radial gradients non-circular

Hi there, I'm having a long-term issue with radial gradients in InDesign (I'm currently using CS6). For the last 3 versions I've not been able to create radial gradients and apply them to an object, and keep them perfectly circular – unless they're applied to a perfectly circular object.
If I try to apply a radial gradient to a rectangle, for instance, it automatically fills the object with the gradient stretched to the shape of the object. So, it behaves more like a gradient mesh than a true radial gradient. I cannot find a setting, keyboard shortcut or menu option ANYWHERE that sounds like it might affect this functionality. The gradient tool in the tool pallet simply readjusts the scaling of the gradient, but retains the same incorrect proportions of the blend. In my gradient dialog box, I have neither "location" nor "Angle" available for me to adjust.
It is seriously driving me INSANE. I've wasted hours on the internet trying to find something but to be honest I don't even know what terms to search for, everything I've thought of turns up the same entry-level useless grandient "tips" from Adobe.
It IS possible to have a cicular radial gradient inside a non-circular object, but my computer seems to have found a "default setting" which uses gradient swatches incorrectly.

@Georgina – It seems that it depends on the aspect ratio of the object:
    1. If the object is in vertical format ("portrait"), the applied circular gradient is squeezed.
    2. If the object is in horizontal format ("landscape"), the applied circular gradient stays circular (but is cut at top and bottom)
I think this behaviour is implemented by design (a.k. a feature; not a bug).
Was it different in any other version of InDesign before?
I don't think so. Just tested in InDesign CS3. Same behaviour than in CS5.5.
What can we do about it?
    1. Work with nested objects.
Construct a circle or a square, apply the radial gradient to it, cut/paste inside that object to a "portrait" rectangle.
    2. Start with a horizontal format, apply the radiant gradient, rotate the object by 90°.

  • Custom gradients that follow an object from start to finish?

    Hello,
I want to create special shapes, with custom gradients that follow the object from start to finish.
I manage to do this for a single line using an artwok pencil (see "Custom gradient" in image below), but not for a more complicated shape (see "The shape I want" in image below as an example)

  • Radial Gradients within individual editable characters?

Is it possible to have an "editable" line of text in InDesign where each character has a radial gradient fill of its own, instead of the radial gradient consuming the entire line of text?
    Thanks!

I think it depens on what you mean. I can apply a differnt gradient to each character in a line of text, but the gradient always seems to be applied as if it is coverint the entire frame, so that if I apply the same gradient in differnt lines the text takes on different values depending on how close or far it is from the center of the frame.
Frankly I think this is a bug, and I'm pretty sure I reported it a couple of years ago, but if you agree it won't hurt to report it again, though perhaps requsting a feature would be more likely to get a change. Same form: Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form

  • Problem using Radial Gradient tool in Creative Suite CS4.

I have pasted on a separate layer a circular photo of a couple's head and shoulders onto a woodland photo, and want to make the sides of it gradiently transparent using the Radial Gradient tool. The problem I have is that it makes all of the photo gradiently transparent.
If I use the Linear Gradient tool it works fine, but only on one part and I can't add it to other parts of the photo.
Am I using the right tool for the job, and if I am, where am I going wrong?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

here I send 2 versions, one is the hand done one as I mentioned, before, re mask then use black brush, the second is the circle feather edge again as mentioned but I left in the layers to give you an idea too
the first allows you more freedom to kill background as I notice the top is flat, I assume that's the edge if the original photo

  • Transforming a radial gradient

There seems to be something wrong with the Scale and Free Transform tools when they are used to transform radial gradients.
I made a circular radial gradient, grey in the middle and white at the edge.
When I try to stretch it horizontally, only the container distorts but the gradient remains circular, producing nasty hard edges at the top and bottom.
But if I try to stretch it vertically I get normal results. So I have to scale vertically and then rotate 90°to get what I want.
Nothing about this in the Help files and the results are the same whether I use the Scale or the Free Transform tool.
Has anyone else had this problem?
    CS3 by the way.

The problem exists in CS4 as well. Here is a screen shot of what Steve reports.

  • Banding in radial gradient

    hi
I'm going to have to print this on a business card. Any idea why there's that rather odd radial gradient banding in the background? it doesnt look like it's smooth, you can see the blending steps there from the dark to light as little circles.
Will this be visible during print? when i export the file as PNG i still see it. I've googled and people talk about adding noise and blurs to it. I donthave photoshop here and Illustrator's effects> artistic> film grain + gaussian blur = poor results. The banding was still visible.
    THanks.

Your computer monitor is a single fixed array of red, green, and blue pixels that light up. In no way do they correspond to the four separate grids of much smaller halftone dots that will be created in print and rotated to different angles to form rosettes. So the banding you see on screen (in any program) is not representative of and does not correspond to the banding you will see in print.
If you don't yet have experience sufficient to judge the likelihood of banding being a problem by the numbers, the only way you can reasonably anticipate what will occur on press is to have the printing house generate a contract proof before committing to press.
It is usually a non-issue, assuming the normal commerical resolution imagesetting of offset printing.
