Making a repeating/seamless pattern

I need to generate a repeating/seamless background from a logo. But I am having trouble doing it due to the complexity of the placement of the pattern. Wonder if anyone could shed some light on how to make this into a repeating pattern.
Example (I manually put this together)

Any input, links to resources or advice greatly appreciated.

There are helpful explanations in a blog post at http://blog.lynda.com/2011/04/26/dekes-techniques-17-creating-a-seamlessly-repeating-patte rn/ and even a movie from Deke McClelland:

  • HOW TO CREATE A REPEATING LOGO PATTERN-BACKGROUND

In Aperture, how can I create a repeating logo pattern/background?  I will then use this pattern/background with other editing software (ps6 CC).

What kind of repeating pattern do you want? If you just need to tile an image you could print it to pdf and save the pdf as jpeg to a folder, for example:
Or arrange multiple copies of your image on a Light Table and print the Light Table to pdf as jpg.

  • Pattern fills with seamless patterns

    Hi,
I'm doing some shapes that have a seamless pattern fill & then I want to use the shapes with the sealess pattern fill in another seamless pattern.  The only way i see I can do this is by expanding the artwork before dragging it into the swatch palatte.  The files are so big illustrator is crashing or the file is near impossible to work with.  I love the look of what i'm doing..but the files are too big.  Any ideas on a better way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Jessica

You mean you are trying to make a pattern of objects that already have pattern fills?
I don´t think you can do that.
On the other hand you can easily select one tile of a pattern from an expanded pattern (double click on it with the direct selection tool), copy that and recolour artwork as you wish. Drag to palette for a new pattern.

  • Seamless Pattern Issue

I created a really intricate seamless pattern filled with brush strokes.
    I have 2 issues:
    1) I have to print the patterns on a large format printer and the printer will not print them correctly unlesss I expand them.  When I expand the pattern the details get lost, lines appear thicker and it changes the design.  Any ideas on how to avoid this?
    2) When I am trying to pull the swatch onto the artboard to change and edit it, I can't.  Not sure why....
    Thanks!!

    1. Without seeing the patterns, it's hard to guess, but perhaps there is a way to simplify them. You say the pattern detail gets lost when expanding… could this be a screen issue? Have you tried rasterizing it?
    2. When you attempt to edit the pattern, are you pulling the swatch out, over a raster image? Try dropping it in a blank area of the artboard.

Not in Illustrator. You will need a CAD program or similar where you can dial in such manufacturing criteria.

  • My Offset filter not working in Cs6: Seamless pattern problems

    Hi all.
Im trying to create a seamless pattern. using lots of layers.
Im going to filter/other/offset/, adding the vertical or horizontal dimensions for as 2953px (image size is 2953px x 2953px). and checking the ‘wrap around’ box.
But it’s not working & is cropping off loads of the layer, so not seamless at all.
I've tried with another layer and the same thing is happening.
I've 'revealed all' and shows nothing. I’ve tried to delete any transparent stray pixels around the layer I'm trying to wrap.
& I have also selected all & then cropped the image but it’s still happening.
I've googled till my hearts content but found no other idea on how to solve. Any ideas?
All my layers are from brushes I have created and used so lots of transparent textures. But that would be a problem if I have tried all of the above would it?
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks. I have attached screen shot.
If you see on the top left and bottom left this is the "white flower copy" layer that I am trying to offset. This is a copy of the white flow with blue centre just to the left of the offset window.
You will see that the offset layer I want to wrap is missing the blue centre.

  • Seamless pattern without borders

    Hey guys!
I'd like to have a infinite seamless pattern without borders.
    Explaining better:
this is a manually filled stone pattern:
then I've made it a pattern and fill, for example, a circle like this:
but I'd like to have the pattern inside the circle with the stones without borders.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks!!
    Ben.

Pattern brush would need some work. I also tried a scatter brush, which could also be worth  trying: Left: scatter brush; right: pattern brush

do you mean Anchor Point to Anchor Point should be less than 7mm? A Script could check segment lengths, on demand, not automatically as you draw.

  • Making a seamless pattern?

I'm working on a builder wrap design that includes an architectural rendering of a home plan, which is an EPS. The size will be 29" high x 60" wide and the design will repeat every 60". This may not even be possible, but is there anyway to create an illusion that the background is seamless or would that be too difficult to pull off without a major reworking of the artwork?

    kcrossley,
See the excellent illustration & explanation by Steve in posts # 2 & 6 in this recent thread:

  • Creating a Seamless Pattern

OK, I figured out my problems with creating a patter from a JPEG!
    Woo Hoo!
However, I'm wanting to create a pattern that will not have seams in it. For instance, I'm filling a path that is about 12 inches by 12 inches with the pattern I created, but there is a seam running right through the center of the filled area. Anyway to create a pattern without seeing seams?
    Thanks

Only by making your original image that you used for the pattern larger than the area to be filled or by having repeating elements on all edges. Generally rasters don't have the elements to make a repeating pattern. If you have a regular, repeating pattern in the raster, then you just have to make the the background bounding box (nofill/nostroke) cut the pattern at an easy repeat.

  • In need of a Seamless Pattern expert

When I'm creating patterns I can see thin lines showing the bounding box...is this going to print?  If so how do I get rid of those lines to make the art seamless??

To ensure it's just the screen redraw issue, zoom in.. if the lines vanish or never increase in size, it is indeed all on-screen and not really present in the art -- so they won't print.

  • Repeating a pattern on a 3D object?

I have some 3D sand in a bottle and I'm trying to map a sand symbol to it, but it's coming up way to large. Illustrator will not let me duplicate the image when I try apply it through 3D extrude & bevel - map art option. It doesn't seem like this should be a difficult task and I'm sure anyone who's used AI for a while can help me in ten secconds. Basically, my sand picture is 1000px x 1000px. I saved it as a jpeg, then imported it into my swatch gallery in illustrator (pretty sure that's the correct way). When I try to apply it to my sand using "map art" I have the option to "scale to fit" which distorts the image horribly. I want it to be a 1:1 ratio, if that makes sense, only smaller and duplicated 10x or whatever to cover the whole object. It's not a seamless picture that I'm mapping, so if there's a filter that I can apply that would make it less noticable, please let me know about that also. I'll attach a screenshot of the sand to show you what I'm talking about. The top layer of sand looks almost perfect, but the bottom one looks terrible because I had to stretch symbol to cover the whole object. If you can tell from the image, each grain of sand is stretched horizontally by like 10 so it doesn't even look like sand. Thanks in advance for the help!

No, you cannot automatically tile artwork in 3D Effect's surface mapping. Pattern Swatches cannot be mapped to 3D Effect surfaces, only Symbols can. So to create a tiled effect, you would have to manually assemble repetitions of the flat artwork, store the whole set of them as a single Symbol, and then map that Symbol.
But in your sand-in-the-bottle attempt, that is just going to "paint" the artwork onto the surfaces of the bottle; you will then have to manually draw the volume (the horizontal surfaces) of the sand, water, etc. on top of the rendered 3D Effect result. You are trying to use 3D Effect for things it can't really do.

  • Making a repeater for my network

Hi all, I have two Wireless G routers. One's a Netgear and the other's a Linksys. I have the Netgear as my main router and I wanted to make the Linksys act as a repeater. The model is WRT54G version 6. I can't figure out how to make it a repeater. Do I need new firmware? Is it not possible to make it one? Are there any other ways I can use these two router together to make my network better? I really would like to put both of these to good use rather than just using one. Thanks in advance for any feedback, Mark

That's correct. The Linksys router that you have is only an access point. You may purchase a range expander. I do have one, though it does not extend 100% wireless connection, it gives extended wireless connectivity.

  • How do I create a repeating curved pattern? I'm trying to make the grooves in tires.

I'm working on a logo and I'm trying to create the tread marks on a tire. I'm having difficulties because of the tire is round and I don't know how to create a repeating shape with the right spacing and alignment on a circle.
I hope this makes sense, I'm still quite new to everything. Let me know if I can help clarify anything!

    Mallory,
An easy way to do it would be to (View>Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) With the Ellipse Tool (ClickHold the Rectangle Tool and see the options fly out) Alt/Option click the centre of the tire path (Smart Guides say center), then set the Width and Height high enough to make it outside the outer rim of the tire path, then remove Fill and Stroke;
    2) With the Selection Tool ShiftClick the circle from 1) and then the tread mark, and Ctrl/Cmd+G to Group them;
    3) Effect>Distort & Transform>Transform, setting Rotation to 360/N where N is the total number of tread marks, and setting Copies to one less (N - 1);
To get rid of the circles, and to have actual tread marks:
    4) Select the Group and Object>Expand Appearance;
    5) With the Direct Selection Tool ClickDrag over the circles and press Delete twice.
That will leave you with all the tread marks in a Group.
