Making a Section of a Photo Opaque

I have a background b&w photo for a book cover. I want to put red text over the middle third in a rectangle. Is there a way to make just this part of the photo opaque without doing it in Photoshop (which I don't really use). The text will be more readable if I do.

More description. The photo to the left found here;

will be the back cover of a book. In the middle third I want to overlay red text (the back cover blurb). To make it readable I want to make the middle section of the building more opaque (maybe 25%) so the overlying red text is legible, but you can still make out it is the building underneath. Does that help?

If you're asking about Pages for iOS (this forum is for iWork for iOS), I don't see an option to make part of an image transparent.
If you're asking about Pages for your Mac, you can use the instant alpha tool to make the background transparent. There is a separate forum for Pages on the Mac here.

Making a photo opaque

I would like to make a photo opaque iPhoto. I know how to do it iWeb.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What degree of opacity do you want for the photo? Default opacity is 100%. There's no tool in iPhoto that does the same thing as the opacity slider in iWeb.

In iphoto, when I click on Print, the preview image it shows me is an enlarged section of my photo. I cropped the photo and checked with no restraints. Once the photo goes to Print, I can't fix it back to the way it is in iphoto.

How can I use Photoshop to take a section of a photo and make it a Photo?

I am sorry to sound so stupid and have typed this question about 5 times now trying to get it to the right forum. I have Photoshop Elements 10 which I work with sparingly. I would like to outline a section of the photo (a face) and somehow select it to be the whole photo - in other words to get rid of all background elements. I can outline the area with lasso, but do not know how to just save that area. When I save, the whole original photo is saved. I also tried the magic extractor, which really worked to make just the face and crop everthing else out, but it has a white background the same size as the original photo, which means it is essentially a reactangle with a face in it. I am trying to just get the face so I can paste it into a document, sort of like when people put heads on fake bodies. This is for a church newsletter. I have done this with my old Picture It software, but that was on my old computer. I think I should be able to do this with all the gadgets Photo Shop has, but I must be missing something.

When you have completed your lasso selection, you should see the "marching ants", the animated outline around the area you selected. Don't click in the photo again or you will lose your selection. When the selection is active (ants are marching), just press Ctrl+C (command+C on a mac) to copy the selection. Then you can paste it into another photo by using Ctrl+V (command+V), or go to File>New>From Clipboard to save the face into a separate file so you can use it later.

I want to cut out a section of a photo

I have a picture of my 1950 Studebaker Commander and I want to cut it out form the background and save to a file. I have tired using the crop tool, but it only lets me cut out in a square or rectangle shape. I know there has to be a way to do this!

As mike suggested, Photoshop Elements if very capable of doing what you want. Here's an example of that very thing.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Trouble with making a link to Web photo Album in Dreamweaver cs4

I am pretty new to this. I have created my website, made all my links, which are working fine, but when I made a Web Photo Album in Adobe Bridge, saved in Dreamweaver under my other web pages on my site.
Here comes the problem, I made a link from i.e. (parents.html) to go into my Web Photo Album but it won't work when I preview it in browser, but other pages will work when I test it with the same link on my (parents.html) page.
I am pulling my hair out, I can't understand why the link to Web Photo Album won't work, it is the last thing I have to do before I have to upload website. Can someone please, please, please tell me what is wrong.

You may need to upload the pages anyway, so that people can help you find the problem. Seeing the code and the associated files is the only way to try and help you ;-)
You can always upload the files to a test folder on the server instead of directly into the root of the site if that is going to be an issue for you,
PS: If it's working from being linked to from other pages, then there must a pathing issue when it comes to that one page.

Making a web gallery type photo viewer in encore

Ay guys,
so I'm relatively new with the whole encore thing. I know enough that I can make menu's, buttons, put in animations etc. the basics really.
I'm wondering if theres a way to make one of my menu's a photo gallery kind of like this one

Where the small ones at the bottoms are thumbnails and when clicked show up in the bigger one up top.
i know photoshop has the ability to make web galleries but i wasn't sure if or how they could transfer over.

For a Photo Gallery, I think that you will want to look a Adobe Bridge, Adobe Lightroom, and finally for publishing, Adobe Dreamweaver.
Encore is a DVD/BD authoring program, and other than creating a DVD Flash, it will be pretty limited, doing what you want to do. You would end up with a very Menu-heavy Project (only get 1GB of Menus and navigation), and then is more suited for Flash Video on a Web page. You could possibly construct something, but it would be rather of a kludge, and also fairly limited. With those other Adobe programs, you will have much more latitude and far greater flexibility.

Making a slideshow - top of photos being cut off

I've been trying to make a slideshow with some of my photos being in Portait mode as against Panorama and when reviewing
my slide show the top of the photo is being cut off. This appears to be for only those that are in Portrai mode.
Does anyone know how I can overcome this annoying aspect?

Make sure the slideshow setting isn't set to scale photos to fill screen.
That will create black areas on each side of the portrait photos but will not cut off the top and bottom.

Making 1000 pages with 1000 photos???

OK, it probably isn't 1000, but a whole bunch.
The Setup: See, I'm making a website for a friend who is a painter. He has many paintings, which are divided into different galleries on the site. In each gallery (landscape, figure, non-objective, etc...) there are thumbnails for each painting arranged in a grid. Each thumbnail will open a new window with the painting and a bit of info.
The Questions: What is the fastest and best way to create all these pages? I will need to Ps all of them to optimize and get some relative sizing, but almost none of them will have the same exact measurements. Perhaps Ps can do it instead of Dw?
I realize I can just create a basic template, and then will have to change the info for each, but I'm just wanting some speed tips if anyone has ever done something so ridiculously manotonous.

I realize that... but the customer is always right.
I showed him several other things, but this is the way he wanted it. He wants people to be able to view and compare different painting at the same time.
I wonder if there is an easy way to make one page, but somehow pull the image and info dynamically? And then if they click another image it will open another window? Anyone do anything like that?

Making a DVD (transferring digital photos)

hi there, new to this, her goes, I downloaded my digital camera to imac and the photos went into image browser! I can see them by dates?? and need to know how/where to transfer them so I can make a slideshow and burn to a DVD. need easy step/step instructions, thanks a lot!!

Use either iPhoto or iMovie to create the slideshow (simpler in iPhoto, more options in iMovie), then send to iDVD (share menu) to burn to DVD.
If you don't have iDVD, you'll need some other DVD authoring tool. Apple doesn't bundle iDVD anymore, but you can still find it on iLife '11 DVDs.

Making 3D animated effects for photos

Are you able to create 3D photo effects, a la Riding Giants, The Kid Stays in the Picture, etc...by just using PhotoShop and FCE? (not just a simple ken burns effect) or is this something that has to be done in AfterEffects? Does Motion allow you to do this as well? I was thinking I could just take a photo, cut it into layers and then stack the layers in a FCE timeline with different zoom times...or am I being naive?

Well, that would require PS to support animated textures in the first place, would it not? And it simply doesn't. That asisde it's a pretty nonsensical workflow - whatever you are trying to do by hopping between 3 programs could probably be done easily in Blender's comp/ shading tree with direct access to texture data, render passes and all that. Realyl. For everything else you might wanan check this old article of mine to get an idea about a workflow that actually makes sense and plays out the benefits of working with render passes...

Is there a way to make and order a Photo Book or Calendar from within Aperture or do I have to send my images over to iPhoto and do it there?

You can not make Calendars using templates in Aperture. If you use Aperture, and have iPhoto, it should be easy to use Aperture images in iPhoto to make an iPhoto calendar.

Making a Mask over a photo IN PSE11

I have just started using Elem. 11
I want to mask a photo.    In PSE7, I thought, I used to just have both layers, black mask on top, and push ctrl G.
Bam, I had it masked.   Now, I am dumb again and it won't work.
I seem to be allergic to manuals, they don't make sense to me.   I appreciate your time and help if you are able to.

By far the easiest method for what I was trying to do if anyone ever runs across this!!!
Clipping Masks
Open image you want to use - shape in my case (premade photo mask)
drag the photo on top of it - picture of my kid, adjust size so it all fits
With the photo layer still active, select Layer>Create Clipping Mask.

Making Email Valentine Card with Photo Booth

I don't know if it's possible or not, but I'd like to make a Valentine Card using Photo Booth that I could send by Email. Can this be done? If so, how? Incidentally, I'm sure that I could probably use iPhoto to do this, if I knew how, but I'm more familiar with Photo Booth. I think I can handle that.

In PhotoBooth on the right-hand side below the picture area, you will see a little button that says "Effects". If you click on that (before you take the picture) you will see that there are several pages of different effects you can select that will superimpose on your photo. Then follow mns's instructions for getting it to an email page. Once in email, you can select the Edit button at the top of the mail page, and then select "Special Characters". There you will find all kinds of emoticon-type things that you can click to insert into your mail message (including hearts, heart-shaped candy boxes, flowers, etc. Once you have selected what you want, you can make them bigger by selecting them and changing the font size.
