Making a separate clip from a master clip...

Hi, If I want to separate and rename clips from an original master clip and place them in separate folders, how do I do this without affecting the original master clip?
Do I need to take the cllps into the timeline, or is there a more time effective way of doing this in the viewer?
When I have tried renaming before it seems to rename all the clips including the master by the same name...
What am i doing wrong?
Thanks.

Thanks Caleb.
What I am wondering is do I need to make copy the master each time I want to make an independant clip?
Say I want to use the master to further log clips from that master clip. Do I need to duplicate the master each time?
Will the in and out points always refer to the entire clip in the viewer, or can I make the clip independent to the point that it no longer refers to the master in terms of duration?
I mean, the master clip was 3minutes, and I want 5 seconds from the clip, is there a way to open the new clip in the viewer and have the time line only represent 5 seconds total, rather than 5 seconds selected from 3 minutes?
If not, how do I zoom in on clips I am trimming in the viewer? If the clip is really long, I find it hard to cut precislely within a very short clip...
Thanks for your patience.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.

  • Can you import video from Mini DV in separate clips?

I've finally got around to rescuing all the hours of video I've got stored on Mini DV tapes. When I imported one into iMovie though, it came in as one long clip. This is not ideal. I'd hoped/expected that the many clips would come in separately, based upon breaks in the timecode.
I guess I can work my way through the one long clip, cutting it into bits, but that's very time consuming and I may as well have imported the footage manually.
Does anyone know how I can get footage onto my Mac from Mini DV in separate clips? Or if there's an easy way to break this hour long clip I've already imported into pieces?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi
    As AppleMan1958 writes
Normal DV footage will be split into clips.
But I figur. If Your miniDV tape has a functioning TimeCode (not copy from VHS)
then iMovie 1 to HD6 - had it as an option to make a full import or as "Individual Clips"
This choise I can not find in iMovie'11.
May be it's still as a flag and by some chance - this got wrongly set.
To correct this (IF) - I would delete iMovie pref file/s and re-start iMovie and try to
    make a new Import/Capture.
    To do this -
    • Close iMovie
    • Find the pref file - iMovie pref file resides in.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences (folder)
and is named. (one or more of these) - and put it/them on desktop
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
and find too - and put it on desktop
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    • Now re-start iMovie and try to do a new Import.
    Did it work ?

  • AVCHD - how can I extract and save separate clips?

My first go around with AVCHD which I know nothing about except that after buying a nice new Sony video camera I have as a result on my first try-out, a single file called AVCHD even though I took several separate clips. When I click on that file on my computer, it opens up and shows thumbnails of each of the separate clips. When I click on one of the clips it opens in QuickTime and from there I can export the file to save it as a separate clip on my computer.
Is there an easier way to batch save the separate clips or do I need to go through this process of opening each one separately in QuickTime and exporting it in order to save it?
Any information on how I should approach working with this AVCHD format would also be greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    Ken

Okay, I'm now going to do an about face and revise my workflow routine to start in Premiere.
"Copy entire AVCHD file from your card  to your local hard drive ( not C;)
    Open Premiere Pro.
Go to the Media Browser Panel
Locate your Source footage on the local hard drive directory.
Click down to the individual source clips.  Where varies a little depending on camera  but eg. VideoStream
Import into Premiere.  ( one way..Drag them to a Folder in the Project Window eg "Holiday Clips""....
... Keep all your source files exactly how they came of the card ( camera card) on your local hard drive.
THey will be individual files in side Premiere.
Dont mess around trawling through them, viewing them  in an external player and sorting them..  You will bust something!
The place to sort your files is in the Bins in a Premiere Project.
Basically...Edit in the editing Application.   (Premiere)

Ken...video is FAR more complex than still photography. And it makes it worse when we have to deal with camera manufacturers that make dozens of different recording formats.  Ready for this?
    Tape (HD):
    HDCAM
    HDCAM SR
    DVCPRO HD
    HDV
    XDCAM (disks)
    D5
    Tape (SD):
    Digibeta, Betacam SP, Betacam SX
    M-II
    DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO 50
    Umatic (3/4")
    Now...onto tapeless.
P2 MXF (DVCPRO HD and AVCIntra)
    XDCAM EX
AVCHD (about 8 different types of this)
H.264 (a few types from different DSLRs)
    RED RAW
    Alexa (DNxHD or ProRes)
    Canon XF
HDV (there is a tapeless format of this)
    MPEG-2
    MPEG-4
    Op1A
    HDCAM Native
And those are the professional formats. Then there are phone video formats and small point and shoot formats.  And there are all sorts of different file structures and separate files that tie together to make the media and metadata work together. There is no simple drag and drop of files.  Each format has a different file structure, and different support files. Different recording formats...be it .MTS, Quicktime, RED RAW, MP4, MXF...the list goes on.
    There is no standard.
I have a tutorial on the process for tapeless in FCP...

  • Import video and be broke into separate clips by scene breaks.

Is there no way anymore to have iMovie create separate clips for imported movies by scene breaks on the camcorder? I know previous versions would recognize when the filming stopped then started again and separate these into separate clips.
(I'm talking about in the Even Library not Projects)
I know I can select one frame and delete it to create separate clips then but its one more step and will lots of scene breaks makes it a pain in the @$$

I am importing from a Sony Digital 8 camcorder through firewire just like I always did. When I imported the footage in imovie o9 instead of detecting when the recording stopped and started again and breaking it into separate event clips it put it as on big clip.
It imports the clips as .dv files

  • Exporting separate clips?

hi, i just read every discussion on exporting and can't understand how to export the whole movie in separate clips like it was captured, instead of one large file.
is it really impossible? i don't have a camera and i need to send the footage to a windows based editor via an ipod, what can i do? manually exporting each clip is not an option, because there are 80+ of them.
    thanks

thank you, Karl. i really wish apple would add such
an option. splitting from a large file would lose the
individual scenes, which all have different length.
    fat32 compatibility is another woe...
If I wasn't clear, my suggestion was to split the long video into scenes on the PC. Not great fun, but probably easier than any other method.
If you keep the (chunks of exported) video smaller than 2GB, my guess is compatibility shouldn't be a problem. No experience, though. Keep each export shorter than 19 minutes to avoid the Fat32 limit. (Use the "Share selected clips" checkbox to break the export into smaller chunks.)

  • Capture a tape and separate clips

I am new to Final Cut Express 4 but I have had extensive experience with various Premier Elements, including PE7 as well as with WideStudio 10 & 11. Notwithstanding all that I cannot find out how to capture the DV tape from my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40E) so that each 'clip' is separated. In the other products above, once you have clicked to separate clips, (by time-codes) they were all captured and recorded as separate clips. In FCE I tried capturing with Batch Capture but that did not work. Can someone please help me as to what i need to do?
    Thanks in advance
    Belatamas

    Hi Meg The Dog
thanks for your suggestion. I did read Page 192 but was not very clear to me. Do I take it that first I have to capture the entire tape in one 'hit' and then segregate the tape into clips? With other programs I used, the 'capture' itself segregated and recorded each clip as it was recording/capturing the tape. The 'segregation' was based on each clip's time code. Is that not the case with FCE 4? Does that mean that I cannot 'capture' all my clips on a tape in one hit as i used to? Or have I misunderstood you response?
    Thanks again

  • Separate Clips

I have an entire camera of clips i need to split up into 15 sec clips. I have done that manually into the project library, and then publish the project into my media browser so I can make DVD's on iDVD. Once i get to the file in iDVD, all 100 of the clips are now one clip and not separate! please help me figure out how I can drag an drop these 15 sec clips into a iDVD template DVD.

    Anyone else have a solution>
There are only three possible solutions -- 2 if you demand the clips be autonomous.
    1) As indicated above, you can create them in iMovie '08 as independent projects,
    2) You can manually segment the DVD level project output into separate clips externally with QT Pro or MPEG Streamclip, or
    3) You can chapter the segments in GarageBand and allow iDVD to automatically create sub-menu entry points for the individual chapters when "Sent" to iDVD from GarageBand but this approach does not return the viewer back to the menu when a chapter finishes and, instead, allows playback to continue on through the succeeding chapters. (Believe you could get around this with DVDSP if you have it.)

  • How can I split a movie in separate clips?

I'm an iMovie newbie, and although I consider myself very computer savvy, I'm stumped by a few issues I have in my first major project with iMovie. Here's what I'd like to do, but I just don't seem to figure it out.
For the record, I'm on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and I'm running iMovie 10.0.3, which I believe is the latest version. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.3.
I have a one hour movie of a friend of mine in concert. She wants to have each song performance broken out as a separate clip. I've imported the entire concert video successfully but just don't seem to be able to create the clips other than scrubbing each song separately, dragging it to the timeline, adding effects at the beginning and end of the clip, then saving it as a file. It just seems very cumbersome and I'm sure there is a better way to do this.
Ideally I'd like to split the entire clip into separate songs and then work on each one individually. I'm sure this is doable, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.
In advance, many thanks for the help!

The easiest way to do this in iMovie is to go to the Project Library view and select your project. Then FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Create a duplicate for each song you need.
Now, open one of these duplicate projects for editing. Delete everything except the song you want to keep. Repeat until you have all your songe.

  • How can I export a small iMovie 9 project for someone else using iMovie 9 in a way that they will be able to edit all the separate clips and audio?

I've tried simply copying the project - but of course, that no longer contains the separate clips and audio used to create the project.  Is there some export function I'm missing - or do I need to just gather up the clips and audio used in the project myself and send those?
    Thanks.

You need to export your project via the Share command.
Share > Export Movie.... (or Share > Export using QuickTime).
That will render your project (combine and set all the events, stills, audio etc).
When completed you can then take that exported file and import it into iMovie on another computer (or back into your own) as a new Event.
You can then start a new project, load that event file and continue editing.

  • How do I cut a long clip to appear as separate clips in Browser?

    Hi,
I have a question, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding the answer.
I'm dutch so I dont really know how to search for it.
I am capturing Hi8 and Video8 clips into Final Cut Pro 6. The thing is that it is creating clips of one and a half hour, and I would like to know if I can cut the clips after capturing, so I get separate clips. But also to show them separately in the browser.
So cut a long clip into smaller ones, and let them behave as single clips to be edited. I know about the Log and Capture Workflow, but I would like to capture first, and then cut, instead of watching the whole tape beforehand and then capture it. Reason is there are a lot of tapes, and to play them 2 times a tape is time-consuming. Also the one who owns the tapes is going to edit them, and will be viewing the material after capturing is complete.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to the "software" solution I was looking for a way to create parts of the long clip as "real" short clips. I found this way:
    - First capture the whole tape.
    - Then place markers where you want to cut.
    - In the browser drag the markers to a new bin.
    - Select the newly created Subclips. Dragging markers (in the browser) to a bin creates Subclips.
    - Go to File > Batch Export and export the clips.
    - Then bring them in Final Cut Server.
When exporting to the same format as the tape was captured I didnt notice quality loss.
Although I realize most people here probably already figured this out,
I thought it would be a good idea to post this solution anyway.

  • Import not splitting scenes into separate clips

I am having a problem that I never encountered before upgrading to iMovie 6.
When I import my Mini DV footage, iMovie no longer splits it into separate clips with each scene break. And, yes, I have selected the "Start a new clip at each scene break" option in Preferences (I have even tried deselecting it, and then re-selecting it). The separate clips option always worked with iMovie 5.
I end up with one long clip, and have to spend extra time manually splitting it up. Very annoying.
My camcorder is a Samsung SC-D351.
    Any thoughts?

Thanks, David and Robert. Robert got me thinking in the correct direction, and David came to the same (correct) conclusion that I did.
Because the problem first happened after I upgraded to iMovie 6, I wrongly assumed it must be a software issue. However, the problem was indeed the camcorder's internal clock. When I checked the info on the last (uber-long) clip I had imported, it told me the create date was 2017.
Once I replaced the camcorder's internal battery and reset the clock, all was well. So, I feel a bit like a dummy. But thanks for letting me bounce my question off you, and for steering me in the right direction. Hopefully this thread will help somebody else with the same problem in the future.
Oh, and thanks to Smtr for trying to help.

  • "these clips were left offline and not divided into separate clips"

After a Maxtor brand hard drive crash, I am trying to recapture footage that was lost. I am using the exact same tapes and source deck as I did originally. In the process of recapture, repeatedly, I get "Batch capture encountered timecode breaks in sequence items. To protect your edits, these clips were left offline and not divided into separate clips." The result is, after spending whatever the time for each clip to capture I get nothing.
How do I turn off whatever unnecessary protection mechanism is in place? How do I recapture my clips?

I've already tried both "create new clip" which created NO clip. The I tried "Warn After Capture" and it can't find the last second of video on the tape, so results in nothing.
I'm now into a new subject. I have created an EDL of the finished project and have tried to re-import that EDL into FCP for recapture. But every attempt to bring the EDL back in results in "Error Importing EDL" and I'm still screwed. Yes I have stripped the recapture information down to the most basic, cuts only, no effects, no filters EDL and it still won't work--I've made dozens of attempts. That may become another query on here: How do you make an EDL that will re-import into FCP? Stay tuned.

  • Combining separate clips

I've got my project divided into about 22 separate clips. They cover probably five different events -- birthday party, school play, etc. Can I recombine the clips (with transitions) that comprise each event, so that I end up with just five clips rather than 22? So many clips is a little unwieldy.

Yes, you can do that. Select several adjoining clips. Then export them to your desk top (File/Export/with Selected Clips Only box checked, as a Full Quality Quicktime movie. Then drag that movie back into your iMovie project as a single large clip.
