Making a slideshow in iMovie

I have iMovie 09.
Can someone please tell me how I can import stills (jpegs) so that I can make a slideshow which I can then burn to play on a DVD? I'll need to add a commentary soundtrack but I think I know how to do this if I can just get the photos imported. The individual slides / stills will probably need to run for different lengths of time between about 10 - 20 seconds.
Thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • I am making a slideshow in iMovie and I added beat marks to my background music.  But before the music starts I want a silent 5 second title slide.

I first added a song to my project and added beat marks using the "tap M" feature where I want a beat mark.  Then I dragged in a number of still photos.  The photos look great.  Changing to the beat of the song.  But now I want to add a Title Text window at the very beginning, have it on the screen for about 4-5 seconds, and then start my slideshow to the music.  The problem is when I add that text window to the begining, the song wants to start there.  I want it to start on the first photo.  Can anyone help?

...  I don't think you can use this method if you drag a song to just one clip..
    sure you can:
but, your project's almost done - so, just 'push the audio aside':
#1: applied audio first, added M's, applied photos to markers..
#2 dragged some black in front = pushed photos aside
#3 dragged audio to match markers with edits back again ... ..

  • Having trouble with Aperture images in a slideshow in iMovie

I've searched for answers to this but can't seem to find out what I'm doing wrong....
I'm trying to put together a slideshow in iMovie with my images from Aperture. They look horrible, color is way off and they're grainy. It was my understanding that iMovie uses the preview images from Aperture for making the movie so I have my settings in Aperture set to the best quality for previews. Is that right? Is there something else I should be doing?
    Thanks for any help.

No, thats the right way I do it with my images. I use iMovie 09 and the preview size of my iLife previews are set to 1680 pixel. I do mostly some slideshows in iMovie for displaying on the web and for iPhone, so the output from iMovie will be most times at 480 pixel wide. The colors are fine and images look best as in Aperture.
What I found sometimes is, some outwashed colors - unsaturated - after I export my movie from iMovie. This comes when I use other settings for exporting the movie than the presets for iPhone or Apple TV. The same behavoir did I recognize when exporting a movie from Final Cut Express or Keynote. This behavoir may be outdated in Snow Leopard, because Quicktime X should use Colormanagement the first time.

  • Slideshow in imovie. Concerned about size

I am making my first slideshow in Imovie. I am concerned about the size of the project and getting it burned to a DVD. There are about 650 photos which are about 4.2GB. There is also music. I know that the standard DVD is about 4.4 GB. I just read that the number and size of the photos do not matter as long as you keep the movie under two hours. Is this true?
    Thanks for the help,
    Charlie

    Hi Charlie,
Yes, you will be fine providing the project is under 2 hours if you are using single layer DVDs. This time includes provision for iDVD menus, which generally use less than a few minutes, depending on the complexity of the menu structure (such as the inclusion of scene selections/chapters). iDVD cares only about the duration (as in running time), not the size (as in GBs).
For iDVD projects over 1 hour you need to choose the encoding settings High Quality or Professional Quality. For projects under 1 hour choose Best Performance. Note that Professional takes about twice as long to encode (compared to High Quality), as it does a two pass operation - but gives the best quality overall. However, I use High Quality and get excellent results for projects over 1 hour.
About a year ago, I produced a slideshow for a family friend. It contained a similar number of photos as in your project and, together with transitions, contained 1280 items plus many titles, chapter markers and music tracks. Total running time was 56 minutes. It covered a trip from Adelaide to Darwin and right around the west coast of Australia, then back to Adelaide along the southern coast. It looked great in iMovie (think it was iMovie '09) and looked just as impressive on DVD via iDVD when played back on 2 separate LCD high definition widescreen TVs (better than I expected).

  • How do I keep the volume consistent on iPhoto when making a slideshow with video?

I am making a slideshow for my church. I first made it in iMovie but the picture quality was lost considerably when I uploaded them into iMovie. I read that there was no way around that, so to use iPhoto instead. I have video's that I am including, but when ever I apply it all with the song I want to play, when ever the videos come up the sound gets quiet as if it were allowing the videos to be heard. I DONT want that. I do not have any sound for the video's and dont want any. Is there any way to make the volume consistant throughout the entire slideshow?
If not, is there a way to keep the picture quality on iMovie????

PhotoPresenter will not mute selected music over a movie file that does not have a sound track component.  I use Quicktime Player with QT Pro and can strip out any audio track in a movie.  PP then plays it without dipping the sound during the movie portion.  This demo page has a few of the over 20 animated themes in PP:  PhotoPresenter Animated Slideshow Themes
There  may be others with the same capability but with PP there have to be no sound track component in the file like the one shown in this screenshot in QT Player 7:

  • Importing slideshow from iMovie 09

I don't know if it is a brain cramp or what, but I am having difficulty importing my slideshow from iMovie 09 into iDVD. I carry out all of the steps when in iMovie and then when I go to the media tab, my movie is not there. Can someone please help???

This is actually quite simple. I'm assuming you want it on a DVD? To do this go into iMovie and got to your slideshow. Click the Share tab and then iDVD. This brings up iDVD and you go on and create your main menu and burn a disc.

I've been making a number of imovies, which generates junk files and material that I should toss in the trash, but it is not clear to me  what items I can toss and which items I can't toss. Can you help? Using the imovie "help" support the system showed me under the menu item "go" where the "start up disc" should be - but that wasn't actually available on my menu!  Thanks for your help!

  • How do I create a scrolling slideshow in iMovie?

So I know how to make a basic slideshow in iMovie, but I'd like to create a "scrolling/sliding" slideshow (see link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXit8kxCCTg). That video uses videos, however, I'm using still pictures. The pictures can all just be side by side too, they don't have to stack like one on top of the other (I'll edit all my photos before hand to make them the same height). I'm using iMovie '11. I'll probably have 150-300 pictures all together. I'd also love to add a timeline to the bottom of the pictures to scroll with the pictures...should I just add that in to each individual picture before hand, and then put it all into iMovie, or can I do it all in iMovie? Also, towards the end of that youtube video, it all starts scrolling backwards....is there a way to do this???
Basically, I'd like to create a scrolling picture timeline with continuous text scrolling across the bottom that I can also play in reverse. Is this even possible in iMovie? Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated. This is time sensitive. I really need to know how to do this by Friday. THANKS!!!!!

I agree with John that you could do this in Final Cut Pro X and Motion, but there is probably a plugin that you can purchase that would do the hard work in Motion for you.
I think it might be technically possible to do this in Motion and export out in a file that iMovie can import, but in the video example, there is a lot more going on such as multicam syncing that would require Final Cut Pro X. Motion's strength is not to use it as a video editor. It is best used as a way to create a special effect that you can then use in a FCPX project.  (just my opinion)
Here are some example of FCPX plugins. There are hundreds more.

I'm trying to make a slideshow in iMovie, but when I upload photos from my Aperture Library into the iMovie Photo Browser, some photos (305 out of 427) are missing. How do I get iMovie to upload all of them?

I have same problem. I could only see a fraction of my project photos if I browse the Aperture lbrary. It is the same problem when I sync the aperture photos to my iPhone or iPad. I still cannot solve it but I know a way to go around it for your iMovie to see the pictures so that you can work on your iMovie.
    Here is the work around:
Export the photos from your album to your hard disk and re-import into your iPhoto. Now you should be able to see those photos that you want to work on in iMovie when you browse your iPhot library.

  • Photo-Slideshow in iMovie

Ok, so I wanted to create a movie of just stills (photographs) and do a "slideshow" in iMovie and use the cross-dissolve transition. When I dragged+dropped the photos into the project however I noticed that the photo quality is reduced greatly on all of my photos. I can open them up in iPhoto and the quality is excellent, however iMovie renders them as blurry messes. I thought that this just may be the program so I ignored it and finished the slideshow. After I exported it into a MP4, I played it in QuickTime and found that the quality was simply awful.
    Any suggestions?

Here's a long thread discussing a number of image quality factors in iMovie HD. It may have more than you want to wade through, however...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=194962&tstart=0
Be careful judging the quality by the export to QuickTime. The export codec you choose and your export settings all affect quality. Quality can range from great to terrible, depending on those settings. Exporting is always a compromise between size and quality.
Experiment with the H.264 codec. To begin, choose the Expert Settings export option, then set the top popUp menu to Movie to MPEG-4 and the bottom popUp menu to "LAN/Intranet". Press the Options button and set the Video Format to "H.264".
The quality should be good, but the movie may be larger than you want. Experiment with lower quality in the lower popUp menu where you picked "LAN/Intranet".
Experiment with exporting a short project clip, not the entire iMovie project. When you get a good compromise, export the entire project.

  • Slideshows in iMovie '08

I am working on my first slideshow in iMovie '08. I have done numerous shows in '06. I am trying to rearrange some of the photos, but can not figure out how. I have tried to drag and drop...no luck. I have not added transitions yet. I was also looking for a tutorial about doing slideshows in iMovie, but have not been able to find one...any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help.

I am trying to rearrange some of the photos, but can not figure out how. I have tried to drag and drop...no luck.
Dragging and dropping within the "Project" window is the normal manner in which you re-arrange clips and/or photos. If this is not working, then you may have a problem.

  • Creating photo slideshow in iMovie 09

    Hi guys,
I have been given the advice to create a photo slideshow in iMovie.
So far I have manage to sort out my photos and import them using iPhone and the Finder but am now up to the stage of putting the photos in the slide show.
There are quite a number of photos and I think by using the Ken Burns effect on every slide is a little overwhelming.
Is there any way I can use any of the other effects like just a simple fade-in?

AppleMan1958 gives you some good information. I have reviewed an earlier version of the slideshow feature of iPhoto on my website and have a short sample slideshow created using iPhoto.
Here is the link to my free photo slideshow software review of iPhoto.
    http://www.great-family-photo-slideshows.com/free-photo-slideshow-software.html
I also provide information on creating a slideshow, choosing the music, etc.
    Good luck.

    Hi
YOU need to - in iMovie - Turn on Advanced Tools !
top row menu - with an Apple top left ---> iMovie ---> down to preferences ---> Here select to turn on Advanced tools .
Now it will work when You drop a clip onto another IN a MOVIE PROJECT ! (can not be done in Event's)
Next problem I had - was to get right clip onto the other - what was the Background and What was the Green screen - BUT just test - You only got two ways to try out.
