Making a swatch in Illustator

I made a library of gradient swatches in illustrator.  I am using them to paint an abstract design which I have converted to Live Paint.  As I paint I notice there are lines coming through with the swatch color. They are straight lines that seem to be a border line from the edge of the swatch I made.  When I complete the painting the lines form a grid in the backgound across the page.  If I switch to default swatches I do not get the line.  I did not include any borders when I made the original swatch.  Any ideas about this mystery??

Do the labels for the Swatches read "Gradient" or "Pattern"?
In other words, are you sure you didn't accidently make a Pattern Swatch when you intended to make a Gradient Swatch. If you drag a grad-filled square from the page and drop it into the Swatches palette, you'll create a Pattern Swatch of squares. If you drag the color chip from the Gradient palette into the Swatches palette, you'll create a Gradient Swatch.

  • Modify tint swatch in Illustrator CS4

If you make a tint swatch in InDesign CS4, you can edit the percentage applied simply by double clicking the swatch and dragging the percentage slider at the bottom of the dialog box. How can I achieve the same results in Illustrator?
P.D.: Now, the only solution I found (very complex for such a simple task) is to use the various select options of the Selection menu to select the objects using the same tint percentage, modify it with the color panel and then saving another tint swatch.

Yes, tedious. I learned this when I first migrated from FreeHand.
The trick is to not bother making tint swatches (!) (I know, I know. A departure from custom. Of course, you can make them if you want, but they turn out to be superfluous.)
Instead, I color select objects with "unnamed" tints, and when I need to modify them, I use the magic wand with a very low tolerance to select the fills (pretty instantly) and strokes (pretty instantly) and adjust the slider accordingly. Because I've gotten so accustomed to this contortion, I've actually forgotten how much of a contortion it is compared to what you're accustomed to.
If someone knows a better way, have at it by all means please.

  • Picking colour for a new swatch from photos

Often i paste some photos in indesign, I pick colour from it and then add colour to a vector graphic say
I pick a shade of blue colour from a photograph and then fill a rectangle with that colour.
How can I make a swatch for it? One way I know is to determine the RGB or CMYk values for that colour and then manually fill those values in new swatch options to create that colour. Is there a faster way, maybe picking a colour using some eyedropper from the rectangle's fill and making a swatch?

How can I make a swatch for it?
If I understand correctly, with the recangle color still selected go to windows>color panel and on flyout menu choose add to swatch.

  • Using Asian languages in Illustrator CS4

    Hello,
First time posting to this forum. I searched existing topics (and Google) extensively, but I either didn't find what I needed or I'm not informed enough to determine if what I'm reading is actually the answer I need
My company has a bunch of marketing flyers that need to be translated into Chinese, Cambodian, Vietnamese and some other languages to satisfy some new clients who speak these languages. Our translators have sent us .doc files with the translated text.
My problem is, I cannot get this translated text into Illustrator. One example font is "mingliu.ttc"...I utilized "Install files for East Asian languages" in my Windows XP settings and installed the mingliu.ttc font like I would any other font. It DOES show up in my Adobe list, but it types English characters.
Assuming I can get my hands on all of the exact fonts our translators are using, does anyone know how to get them to properly display in Adobe?

  • Question About Color's and Gradients

    Hi all,
I have a question about color swatches and gradients.
I am curious to know, if I have 2 color swatches that I make into a gradient color, is it posible to change the tint of each indivdual color in that gradient and have that applied to the gradient without having to adjust the gradients opacity.
The reason that I'm asking this is because in creating a project I found that the colors that I chose for to make my gradient from my swatches were to dark, and while I can adjust each one's tint to my liking (if the object they were applied to was going to be a solid color) but that doesn't seem to apply to the overall gradient.
I hope that makes sense, I know that this was something that was able to be accomplished in quark and was wondering if I can do something similar.

If you double click your gradient swatch (after adding it to the swatches)
Then click a colour stop in the gradient, and then change the drop down menu to CMYK (or rgb)
And you can alter the percentages there. It's not much use for spot colours but it's a start.
But making tint swatches would be a good start anyway.
At least then when you double click the gradient (in the swatches) to edit it you can choose from CMYK, RGB, LAB, or Swatches and adjust each colour stop to your liking.

  • Panels Keep Minimizing Themselves (Ps CS4, Win7)

I'm using Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7 at work and every time I minimize or close Photoshop and then maximize/re-open, my Swatches and Layers panels are minimized.
My workspace is saved, and I've tried resaving it (including panel locations, shortcuts and menus).
If i'm just simply switching programs/windows, it doesn't happen. Its only when the entire program is closed or minimized.
It doesn't make any difference if I have a file open or not.
Screenshots: left is before minimizing, right is after minimizing and maximizing again.
This hasn't always happened. Its jsut been in the last few months, and its driving me nuts. I mean its not like its hard to open them again, but when i'm switching back and forth between other programs and trying to do things quickly, it gets extremely irritating.
It doesn't happen on my colleague's computer, and she has the same version of everything. I've never seen it happen before (before it started doing this).
I have CS5 (and have had CS3 and CS4 in the past) on my Mac at home and its never happened. Although you can't actaully minimize Photoshop on Mac anyway.
Any ideas as to why this is happening or how to fix it?

Oh, I just realized that that option does. Its the panels that I have in the icons that I open and close (down the left side, I have my type and paragraph panels, history, etc.). If you minimize Photoshop when one of those are open it closes it when you bring Ps back up again. I wasn't concerned about those ones so I didn't test it at the time. I was concerned abotu the fact that it didn't make any difference to the swatches and layers.
Only thing its doing now is just making the swatches window taller, making the layers shorter, which I can live with, becuase its all still on my screen. I'm sure there's a way to fix that too though.
I've just got too much work to do and not enough time to figure out how to fix all the tiny issues within my working hours.

  • To find out the "CMYK" FillColor percentage for graph and mesh items

Is it possible to find out the "CMYK" FillColor values(percentage) for "GraphItems" and "MeshItems" in illustrator cs3 files through programmatically. Please help me.
    Thanks in advance..

Yes you are correct he needs to access the file info and perhaps the
recolor art dialog what they are seeking is to get the values of the
cmyk of the fill and stroke for these particular
objects, so they seem to have to selected first then they have to open
and read the value perhaps from the live color dialog as I mentioned
before so I think it has to be two scripts one the goes to the
Select>Same>Fill Color then goes to the live color then reads the
color makes a live color group and returns it to the swatches panel
there he can then open the swathes and see the values.
I think the same for strokes.
    That doesn't work.
But selecting the stroke and making a swatch of the does work and and
    the same with fill.
it may be that simple select the art, select stroke or fill make a
swatch create a color group add the swatch to the color group or name
    it.
I think that is al they need they can then select the swatches and run
a script to get the values.
    Does this make sense?

  • Is there a way to change back to the old color-picker?

Okay so the new version of muse has the optional HSB or RGB sliders. And that's cool BUT WHY?
Maybe its just me but I don't like this new selection method, the old allowed me to lighten OR darken a color in a few clicks. On the new-new, this is quite a task.
In fact, there is no slider for white, only black, meaning darkening a color is easy (via HSB) but lightening a color involves making a swatch and editing a swatch EVERY TIME.
Someone please tell me I'm a fool, and that THERE IS a way to change it back. Id gladly wear a dunce cap to have my old work-flow back.
    Thanks.
    Yours in Muse,
    - Max

    Hi Max,
I am afraid that you will not be able to revert to the old color-picker. I will recommend that you add this to the ideas section over here to get that added along with the new color-picker or an option to switch, Ideas for features in Adobe Muse

  • Making a color pallete/swatch in Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac

    Hello,
I don't know much about the color pallete in PE 8 for Mac except to type in the RGB numbers to get a certain color.  I work with materials from the Stampin' Up Co.making greeting cards for friends.  Stampin' Up have their own colors that they use in their materials, paper, ink stamp pads, etc.  I have the RGB numbers for each of these colors, and would like to make a color pallete/swatch in PE 8 for Mac so I don't have to continually type in the RGB numbers to get a specific color.  How do I go about doing this?
Thank you for any help you can give to me.

  • Making a pattern or swatch?

    Hi,
I just made a pattern tile which works great.. However, when I move the object that uses that swatch, it changes it look to the location in the pattern. I need it to stay consistent, meaning that when I copy past that object I will always have the same look and not different once because of the placement. How can i do that?
    Thanks
    Aileen

Go into Illustrator's General Preferences, and check Transform Pattern Tiles.

  • Making custom set of color swatches permanently available?

I added some new color swatches to a blank, new set. http://screencast.com/t/0KaxCmlxiEmH
I would like this new set to appear as an option in the list of available sets. http://screencast.com/t/HK4quzrmMnz
I've saved it to the presets folder. I've tried every option to save/load. It just won't appear in that list.

Thanks! I think this is why I cannot see it. When I try to save to that folder, I am told I do not have admin persmissions. I am on a work comp, so when I try to change security settings I am locked out. I'll have to consult IT.

  • How to create a Gradientcolor from two existing swatches

    Hello all,
I have 2 colors in the swatches palette.has anyone how to create a new gradient color from this to swatches.
So far I can get my to colors from the palette and extract their color:
    aSwatch1 = sAISwatchList->GetSwatchByName( colList, colorName1 );
    aSwatch2 = sAISwatchList->GetSwatchByName( colList, colorName1 );
    iErr = sAISwatchList->GetAIColor( aSwatch1, &colorP1);
    iErr = sAISwatchList->GetAIColor( aSwatch2, &colorP2);
// now somehow create a new gradient:
    iErr = sAIGradient->NewGradient( &gradientHnd );
but what do now. to get the new color from colorP1 and colorP2. I need a simple linear gradient.
    Any hints?
    regards
    Michael

    Hello,
    > Please, excuse any ignorance below. I'm not well versed in the actual artistic side of Illustrator, just the implementation
excused because you're the one of the few people here who give thoe most usefull answers
    > Isn't that to be expected though? From my admittedly limited understanding, the gradient being saved is really just a sequence of colour stops. I would have thought since the angle of the gradient is more of a property of how its applied to the path (or whatever) that it wouldn't make sense to save it on the gradient colour.
No, not from my view (and needs ).
The color for the gradient has a type of AIGradientStyleMap. this struct contains the angle für the linear gradient etc. This color is added to the swatchpalette so it shoud keep the value.
If you replace the CreateGradientSwatch function in SnpGradien.cpp of the SnippetRunner with the following code a 2nd swatch with an different angle is added to the swatchpalette when creating a new linear gradient is created (name seems not what it should but 2 swatches are created. Applying this 2 swatches to a rectangle also the angle is changed as it should be.
So from my point of view Illustrator doesn't take the angle when a new color/swatch is created in the swatch panel. Why the angle is saved by creating a style is another question and difficult to answer without looking inside the source of Illustrator

  • Pattern swatches are shifting when exported to PDF and viewed in Preview/GoodReader

I've tried for days to find an answer to this question, but haven't succeeded. Please also be aware that I'm a self-taught Adobe Creative Suite user. I'm working on a Mac with CS6.
I work for a small publisher that produces knitting books. The problem is this: our tech editor has created charts in Illustrator using the pattern swatches feature. (These are knitting charts. Each square contains a pattern swatch representing the knitted stitch.)
I am then placing these charts in their native .ai format into an Indesign file and exporting them to PDF. In Acrobat, the charts look fabulous. In the Mac Preview reader and in GoodReader, the charts do this...
... the pattern swatches shift around inside their squares. Each of those dots should be centered inside their squares. In Preview, when I resize the application frame, the pattern swatches move as I re-size the frame. Any ideas about what might be happening here?
I've tried saving the charts as PDFs and placing those into the InDesign file. Doesn't help. Exporting the charts as images (jpg or tif) works, but I have to make the resolution/file size ridiculously large to get the quality of the vector image. I'd rather place the .ai files into the .indd file if possible.

Try using File>Object>Expand on a copy of the original before making the PDF for placing.

  • Custom swatch library isn't updating in CC

I have a big custom swatch library that I'm continually making additions and corrections to. I have it set as persistent, and the library works fine, but it doesn't update when I make changes to it. As far as I can tell, it's still stuck at the point where I upgraded to CC a few months ago. I've tried unchecking persistent, closing the library and Illustrator, then reopening and reinstalling the library, and it's still reverting to the old version.
    Anyone else having this problem?
I've just upgraded to 17.1 on a Windows 7 Pro machine.

    Hi OuraySportswear,
Do you have this library file outside of presets folder? Currently this feature sync these libraries from presets folder only.
