Making a wireless VoWLAN only

Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to make WLAN available only for Voice; i.e. excluding all data traffic from the WLAN. Can i make an access list based on Jabber NBAR? Does any version of the WLC have this functionality?
My thought is since i will be designing the new wireless solution + BYOD (ISE), it would be good to put one SSID for VoWLAN. Is it feasible?
TIA,
Nicos Nicolaides

Hi Snyder,
I agree with you. If I look into detail this is how I see it
A. Upstream traffic (from wireless client)
1. Client -> AP (if client support WMM & correct classification then only any sort of QoS or prioratization)
2. AP -> WLC (In the current model, CAPWAP DSCP depend on WMM-UP value)
3. WLC -> Wired (AVC could change QoS & imposed beyond this point)
B. Downstream (to wireless client)
1. wired -> WLC ( wired QoS determine what value goes to WLC)
2. WLC -> AP ( if needed AVC could change QoS based on recongnised application )
3. AP -> Client (WLC can control - Convert to WMM-UP values as per 802.1p -802.11e mapping table)
When Implementing QoS end to end, few points to remember
A-1 : cannot control at all (from WLC or network perspective)
A-2 : In current unified deployment model cannot do much, but with Converged Access (3850) you can implment your normal wired QoS for the wireless packets as well. No CAPWAP beyond access switch.
A-3 : Trusting CoS is the only option if you have to enforce WLC QoS
For downstream direction , you can better control it as outlined & wireless QoS is primaraly focusing that.
So in my view there is no 100% correct solution here, you have to configure QoS to improve the services as much as you can within the capability of these deployment methods & technologies.

  • Setting up a Wireless-N only network (WRT160N) problem.

    Hi.
Now that I bought the wireless N adapter for xbox 360, all my wifi enabled devices are "N" capable. So, I've been trying to set my network to "n only" but everytime I do that, I can't connect any of my devices to my network.
Can someone please help me to properly configure my router/devices?
Here is a list of my network devices:
    WRT160N router
    MacBook Pro
    Toshiba Satellite A505 Laptop
    Xbox 360
iPhone (I do use wifi most of the time while at home)
    iPad (same as iPhone)
So, as I said before, all my devices are N capable, but once I switch the router to wireless-N only, all my devices get disconnected. They all can see my SSID, but can't connect to it.
Any advice/suggestion/tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

Well... seems like the WPA security was the problem. I switched to WPA2 and is running like a charm. The only thing I have issues with is Media Center (usingo xbox as an extender). Everytime I run the network test, graphic or bar test shows a very unstable conection. The weird thing is that, if I run an HD video without media center (thru windows media playet sharing), the video file runs flawlessly.... so... should I blame the lame media center for this?

  • How to setup Time Capsule for wireless backup only

I have a new Time Capsule that I want to set up for wireless backups of both my Macbook Air (with Time Machine) and a Windows Vista laptop. I have an existing home wireless network with my Att/Uverse tv and internet service. I do not want to disturb that network/internet setup.
How do I set up the time capsule to use it for wireless backup only? When I start the Airport utility setup, the first thing it asks is do I want to 1) set up new network, 2) replace existing router, or 3) join existing network.

Thanks. That got me the green light and a message that everything was set up properly. It started it's first Time Machine backup and everything looked good for a while. But now I have a new problem.
The backup failed twice. The first time it had a message that it could no longer find the time capsule, so I had to reset it and go thru the setup procedures again. Started backup again overnight, and this morning it tells me that it failed again. But this time I still have my green light, and the message is "a network problem may have interfered with the backup.
I don't know what else to do with the setup to get it to work. Right now it has started backing up again on its own, so I'll leave it going one more time. (I should tell you that all of this is occurring on my Mac. I have not even started setting it up on the Vista machine. I want to make sure it works on the Mac first). Any advice from anyone who had the same problems with setup would be appreciated.

Assuming you have iPhoto 9 (11) give this a try: make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Since only one option can be run at a time start with #3 followed by #4 and #1 as needed.
3 - try adding a page after each fix.

  • Log on screen not working with wireless keyboard only usb KB

Since upgrading to mountain lion from the latest version of Lion, I am not  able  to log  on  with my wireless keybord only with usb kb but  the  wireless kb  is  working  well, it  react  but no stars ** appear in the  log on password field
So i  enter  with  the  usb kb and  then the  wireless kb  is working  well
I put  all  keybord settings  to  default
I reset  smc  and pram  but  same behaviour
Any  hint  to  fix  this  ?

I fought for it for long time. I used command-r, option key, command-option-r, option-r, everything you can imagine but it did not work. I even  shut down the imac and then tried all these combinations but it still did not work. I EVEN TRIED APPLE's OFFICIAL ANSWER TO THIS ISSUE BUT BELIEVE ME IT DID NOT WORK AS WELL. Then I deeply thought for a while and shutdown the iMac. Then I took off the batteries from the wireless keyboard. Then Waited for 5 seconds or so. Then I just started the wireless keyboard with the button on the side. It started blinking. I immediately understood that my trick is going to work. I understood the problem. While the keyboard was blinking I started the imac. Now after startup chime from apple i just pressed the option key. And guess what- THE RECOVERY OPTION POPPED UP! See, the point is after you restart or shutdown the keyboard is still kind of paired with the imac so when you start it those keys are kind of overlooked. When you reaaly take out the batteries from the keyboard the pairing is lost. When you restart the imac the pairing is established during the startup chime tone. This is precisely the moment to press those keys like option or command-r. The command-r key works only if you have imac that was preinstalled with 10.8
I hope this saves your hours of work! I really wished that APPLE knew it. I have so much believed in this company so far.

  • Adding Wireless-N-ONLY Time Capsule to Dual-Band Airport Extreme Network?

I have a dual-band airport extreme which I have configured to create both a wireless-a/b/g/n SSID on my network, as well as a second SSID which is Wireless-N-ONLY (meant to be used with my Time Capsule so that all backups to the Time Capsule via Time Machine are only ever done via Wireless-N).
My Airport Extreme is already configured, and now I just have to configure my Time Capsule on my network...
Can someone briefly run through the "assist me" steps in the Airport Utility that I'd want to follow to configure my Time Capsule so that it's available on my dual-band base station's wireless-N-ONLY network and so that it's not transmitting or receiving any other wireless protocol other than wireless-N?
    Thanks!

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your earlier feedback. I now have a dual band TC and the previous dual band EABS and I'm tearing my hair out trying to get these things to play nice! Maybe you can provide some assistance:
    1) The TC upstairs is connected to the comcast modem and is the main 'router' in my network. In addition, I'm using the "create wireless network" option on this router to set up both a 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz wireless environment.
    2) The AEBS downstairs on the opposite end of the house is connected by ethernet - whole house is wired so I'm feeding from the TC upstairs through a switch in the disti box down to an outlet where I have the AEBS. The cat-5 cable is connected to a LAN port on the back of the AEBS.
    3) I have the AEBS set up to extend the wireless network. When I do this it only gives me the ability to select one wireless network (I have the TC configured to call the 5 GHz network something different) - In essence doesn't appear to want to let me extend both bands of the wireless network.
The problem seems to be that once I get all the configurations set I have no connectivity and if I try to open the configuration via Airport Utility, its just a spinning gear and will never open to show the settings. This happens to with both the TC and the AEBS. It's like it's in a loop or something.
I immediately disconnect the AEBS from the network and suddenly all is well again.
I know this seems like a rant, but this has been kicking my a** for two days!! I've just about had it with the constant 'hard reset' of the routers and starting over with configuration. If you have any specific things I should do, or settings that are key to set up both devices to extend my wireless network throughout the house I would be so thankful!!
    Thanks,
    Don

  • Wireless sync only works when I unlock phone. Is there a way to tell itunes my phones unlock code?

Wireless sync only works when I unlock phone. Is there a way to tell itunes my phones unlock code? Itunes tries to sync all night and posts 50 unknown errors. I unlock the phone and it syncs. I dont want my phone sitting around without a lock code but with wireless sync I cant find a place to tell itunes my code so it can sync? Any help is appreciated... Ray O

I have the same problem. I am forced to have a PIN set on my devices because I use my corporate exchange email and sync over wi-fi initially fails until I manually unlock the phone/ipad.  #ckuan needs to read the words wiritten.  We know how it's supposed to work but it won't start until you enter the PIN. Until then I get error messages saying either it cannot find the phone or explicitly telling me I need to unlock it.

  • Is a wireless network only as fast as its slowest link?

Is a wireless network only as fast as its slowest link? Or is it as slow as its slowest device connected to the network? I have a wireless 802.11n network and have one G4 running a 802.11b Airport card. Does that computer slow down the rest of the network?

I believe the "jury is still out" on how much impact vs. the number of non-"n" devices added to a "n" network will degrade it, but it still shouldn't reduce it to "g."
"n" upgrades are available, albeit they are fairly costly. One vendor is QuickerTek
A somewhat less costly path would be to utilize a second wireless router with 802.11g capability, and then, set up a "Dual Mode" network with your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). In this configuration, you can run the AEBSn in pure 802.11n, either at 2.4 or 5 GHz, and use the other router for your "g" devices with all devices still being on the same network.

  • Making Sprint Wireless PC Card (Merlin S620) Work

I just purchased a Merlin S620 wireless PC card from Sprint and would like to make it work on my G4 Powerbook. I heard that the Verizon card is better, but I have a good deal with Sprint and would like to stick with it if at all possible. i went to the EVDOinfo website and there are some directions there for making the card compatable with my Mac. I was just wondering if anyone has had any success with following these directions.
They say that these directions are only for "advanced" computer users and that you have to perform the commands in the "Terminal Application". I'm trying to avoid having to return the card I bought from Sprint and buying it again from EVDOinfo, just so that I can have the technical support and "easy version" of directions for novices, which would be possible if I bought the card from EVDOinfo. I'd like to know if anyone has had success in being able to get the card to work properly on their Macs just by following the "free" version of directions and downloading the drivers from their website.
I'm a little skeptical about the directions that are posted because there are many discrepancies that I noticed when looking over them. They jump around talking about different types of cards and networks in the directions for the Merlin S620. It just doesn't make sense. Any feedback whether I should continue to try to make this thing work using the free directions from EVDOinfo (or any other way) would be appreciated.

If the issue persists, you might consider calling us. We can check the price and availability of replacement printheads, and/or discuss the option of a newer printer model. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.

  • Manual duplex times out on wireless connectivity only - D5560 printer

The printer is set for manual duplex. I use a Dell Insiron laptop (OSW7) with a wireless connection to Netgear Wireless-N 3000 Router. IP address is 192.168.1.5:3910 for the wireless printer.
The pages print on the one side and then simply stop printing on the last page just before the printer should be releasing it.
If I leave everything alone, approx 15 seconds later the page gets released and the print cancels.
If I manually tug the final page out of the printer and manually insert for the second side the page has a small area at the end unfinished. The first page of the second side may have this data printed on it.
I've reinstalled the software and all hardware has driver updates etc.
My PC is cable connected to the router and I've never had this happen. It is only on the wireless connection for the laptop.
    Is there a solution?

Does the printer recover by power-cycling your switch or unplugging the LAN cable to the printer?

  • Wireless G only on Vista but N works on Mac OS X side...

Uhh... Yeah. What's the deal!? I have an excellent connection and speed on my OS X side with Wireless N enabled but on Vista it is connected at 6MB/s and says it's only on Wireless G. What gives? I have a new 500GB Time Capsule router that works with all my other computers, just not Vista on my 20" iMac!

Got Boot Camp v.2.1 and it updated the driver and fixed alot of problems.
