Making all Drives visible in iMovie10 Library
I wish to transfer an iMovie 10 event onto an external hard drive connected to my Mac. The External drive (Formatted for Mac) and the Macs internal drive are not showing in the left hand column where the libraries are. How do I make them visible.
The drives do not show in iMovie 10. The storage model is completely different (and more flexible).
To move events from a library to a new library, create a new library (File - Open Library - New) and specify its name and location. Then select and copy to it all the events and projects you want to put in it This way you won't break any links to external media.
Alternatively to move a whole library, selct the library in the libraries pane go File - Consolidate Library media (this ensures that any external media are copied to the library package). You can then move this library to its new location using Finder. iMovie won't find it by itself - the first time you want to open it you will ahve to File - Open Library - Other and navigate to its new location.

I have been having difficulty with external drives since upgrading to Leopard. I can see in Disk Utility that the drives are mounted, but they do not appear on the desktop. I recall there's a Terminal command that can change the attribute of the drive from "hidden" to "no hidden". Can anyone tell me what the proper string is to affect that change from the Terminal?

Out of fear, I CCC Cloned internal drive via block copy to second same model internal drive "Beta" and it exhibited same symptoms on restart. Whatever the issue is, it travels with the data on the drive.

I found the following...may or may not be relevant to this.
I booted from a back-up drive (external SATA) ran DiskUtility in the thoughts this was a permissions issue. The output was alarming, but I can't interpret it. Additionally there are a huge number of lines about some HP Folders getting permissions fixed.

I use an external hard drive for my Lightroom library and I notice that all the images shown on there are DNG. On my MAC hard drive I have images shown as NEF. I desperately need to free up space on my hard drive, can I safely delete these NEFs?

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident. -
I have an old iPod Classic with 80 GB (I think) of space. I saved all my songs in an external hard drive, but the iTunes library resided in an old computer (no longer working). Can I get the library from my iPod and use it in my new computer (Windows)?

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library? I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's? I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.
Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss? In the iPhoto Library? Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"? Quality? Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type? Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...

I sorry for your experience, but there is no way to recovery the data encryped by BitLocker untill now.
BitLocker is designed to make the encrypted drive unrecoverable without the required authentication. When in recovery mode, the user needs the recovery password or recovery key to unlock the encrypted drive. Therefore, we highly recommend

1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.

3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window. -
I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library. When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found". But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem. What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ???????? Please help
Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive. If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down. You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes. Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked. You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library. iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.

Using an external drive for my iTunes Library
One post, many questions.
Sometimes I inadvertently open iTunes with my external drive turned off. It holds my library contents.
iTunes however, with no warning or message, just reverts the library location to my internal drive and throws whatever it wants to download there (usually a few podcasts).
My bad, I know. I leave the drive turned off because I often don't need it for up to a week at a time. My iPod charges in the car as I drive around.
I end up with my library split, all but a tiny bit of content over on the external drive hooked to my airport extreme, and that drive removed as the library location in iTunes.
So I change the location, let iTunes reorganize my library, and go on my merry way. I'd like to make it not happen. No, leaving the drive on is not an option. The answer to the question "Do all your little light up boxes REALLY need to be on all the time?" is no. It's easier to turn some off, believe me.
I moved the contents of "user"/music/iTunes/iTunes Music to the external drive. Downloads, Podcasts, and TV Shows folders live in there amongst the content. It works great unless I drop my iPod in the dock or otherwise start iTunes with that drive switched off.
Is it safe to go into the original location and delete enough of the file structure to make iTunes at least say "hey! where's the library" rather than changing my set preferences and filing things where I don't want them?
If I delete user/ Music/iTunes/*iTunes Music* from my internal drive will iTunes a. work? b. not see it, so just make a new iTunes Music folder and keep doing what it has been? or c. ask for a library location? (prompting me to turn the drive on)
Should I recreate that naming structure to/on the external drive? Right now the path to the content is shared/airport extreme/OWC Media Storage, with the content then on the dedicated drive. When I send iTunes down this path what shows up as the library location is just OWC Media Storage: . The default iTunes loves so much does show the whole path Travelstar 200GB/user/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. Is part of the problem my just throwing the content on a drive I gave a non iTunes specific name?I noticed this is getting views so, I'm posting answers to myself if case it's helping someone else.
I turned the external drive off and started iTunes on purpose to see what it's reaction would be.
It does redirect itself to the original location, remake the iTunes Music folder on my internal drive, and start to download Podcasts.
Is it possible to stop this? Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked? I'd actually rather iTunes crashed than reset itself this way. -

I put the flash drive into my laptop, selected " add file to library", selected the songs I wanted from the flash drive, and it looked like they were added as the names show under " recently added". Then I removed the flash drive from my laptop But when I select one of the songs and try to play it a message saying "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Dragging the files to "Automatically Add..." is pretty easy once you know where to look. Just make sure iTunes is running when you do it; otherwise the files will just sit there until the next time you open iTunes.
(Interestingly, the way you originally tried to do would have worked fine except for one little detail: you have to first go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and check the box for "Copy files..." If that is not done, iTunes will reference the files on the flash drive, which of course are not accessible once the drive is removed, as you saw.)

How do you import photos from a library on an external drive to the current library running in iPhoto? I have a few different pictures in each library and would like to have all my pictures in both libraries. The library on the external drive is my backup. I would appreciate any help.
Depends on exactly what you want to do.
Just move some of the Photos? FIle -> Export from one and export the shots to the Finder. Then import them to the other.

Move the photos and all versions and metadata: use iPhoto Library Manager it's the only way to do this while preserving everything. Merge two Libraries into one?
If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager -
LR 2.6 Windows 7 64 bit - not all drives listed in browse
I am using Lightroom 2.6 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, and I have found an annoying issue -
the browse for files or folders dialog that comes up when I need to choose location for my raw files imported as .dng does not list all hard drives of my computer - it only lists contents of my user folder in drive C:/ - thus making it impossible for me to choose any other location than those within my user folder.
I attach two screenshots - 1/ Normal browse for folders dialog as it appears from within Windows explorer.
2/ Same dialog as invoked by Lightroom - with all drives missing.
Is that a bug or am I missing something?Do you have the "Computer" icon on your desktop ?

My music will not play on my iPhone 5. It has the upgrade as well as my iTunes on my macbook. But the music will not sync to my iPhone and all music is in my library. What do I need to do?
An exclamation mark means that it doesn't know where you moved the music to. To fix this, click on the exclamation point and when it asks you to browse to the location where you moved it to, use the normal commands to go up and down folders in your external drive until you find the song. Repeat as necessary.

I'm new to OSB and am having tape drive, volume problems.
File system backups only complete successfully when drive (IBM4_0_0_1_1) is used. When OSB attempts to use other drives in the library it logs the following errors listed in "Transcript".
I'm running OSB (10.4.0.3.0) on a Linux server (Oracle Linux Server release 6.0) with a SL500 library controller by a ACSLS(8.3.0) server.

ACSLS is part of the configuration requirements I need to have in this OBS environment.
I'm going to re install OBS just to see if anything changes.

Update:
When configuring devices in OSB that are ACSLS in nature it is a requirement to restart the obacslibd after mkdev or certain chdev commands are preformed.
After the daemon was restarted I was able to use the attached tape drives.
