Making an idiot proof presentation DVD with no visible menu

I was asked by a client to deliver final video content on a DVD. It was for a presentation, and I asked if they wanted a menu or if they wanted the content to just play when the disc was inserted in the DVD player. They wanted the ability to have the DVD cued up and then initiate playback when desired. They asked for a "menu" where the screen was simply black, and then they wanted the video content to simply start from black when they hit "play" or "enter."
I wanted to make sure this thing was "idiot proof." I didn't want them to be pressing "enter" and have nothing happen, so I made a button that was the size of the full screen. There was no text and no graphics. Just a giant button zone that was the full width and height of the menu area. This may not have been necessary, but if they were playing this back on a computer and using a mouse to navigate, I wanted the entire screen to be "active." Feel free to let me know if this is silly. With the button selected, I went into the "Colors" tab in the Inspector. I set the "Normal," "Selected," and "Activated" colors all to black and all to 15% opacity. My goal was to have the menu screen completely black with no evidence of anything, and then no indication of anything (color, text, or otherwise) when hitting "play" or "enter" so that the video would just start playing.
"Simulate" gave me the impression that I had achieved the desired result, but unfortunately, when watching the final, burned DVD on a player, there was a grey flash when pressing the "play" (or "enter") button on the remote.
Any thoughts as to why this would be? But really... my main question is "how do I achieve the result I want?" I'm open to setting this up in a completely different way, so you're welcome to tell me that my attempt was flawed from the get-go. My specialty is After Effects, so I'm a relative newbie when it comes to DVD Studio Pro. I may need to be schooled in a serious way.
Thanks.

I'm a little late, but thank you for answering my question. "The first button on a menu is always in the selected state no matter what," is exactly the kind of basic, fundamental type of information that I was lacking. I ended up making one button which I tagged as "invisible," and that's exactly what I needed.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. Much appreciated.

I would suggest that you post this to the Adobe Encore>Menus & Buttons forum. What you want to do, if I read correctly, is pretty simple. There will probalby be links available to step you though it. I'll look for this there, and start gathering some links.

  • How can I combine two separate video projects onto one DVD with a common menu?

In PE 3 I have a finished video project and a separate slideshow that I want to include together on the same DVD with a common menu. I would like the slide show to be accessible from the main menu of the DVD, something like: "Play Movie" and "Play Slideshow". How do I do it?

  • Need to idiot-proof an iMac with 2 different size printers

Have an iMac with a Kodak 500 photo printer (ONLY prints on a 4.17in x 7.25in "postcard" size) and laser printer (8.5x11 only) connected (Kodak via USB, Laser via network) ... need to get it to automate the page setup (size) based on the printer selected in the print dialog ... can this be done automatically? Tried through page setup, but it didn't seem to like to keep the page size linked to the printer.
In this case the Kodak will NEVER print on anything else, and the laser will be on letter 99.99% of the time.

You can special-order a matte screen iMac. My 3GB slightly outdated iMac deals reasonably well with 300GB files (there are some pauses, but not for more than a second or so). If this level of performance would drive you crazy, get the Mac Pro (and plenty of RAM).

  • Create a DVD with no top menu page

How would I go about making a DVD that would just start in black with no menu page? Either in iDVD or Studio Pro. Can it "auto start" or am I stuck with having to enable a start button? Thanks! Denny

    Hello Alex,
if the autoplay item in iDVD is set to loop, the menu will not come up, but without the looping it will show at the end of the movie.
If you don't want to set the movie to loop, there's the possibility to create a "black" theme, in which simply everything (background, drop zones, titles) is black, so your TV will show a black screen after the movie (note that the disk keeps spinning: there IS something that plays)
The only way to completely remove the menu from a DVD (disk image) is to do post production with myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
Toast lets you burn a DVD without menu - simply uncheck the appropriate check-box
    hope this helps

  • Is iDVD completely gone in version 10.8.2? I would like to be able to make a DVD with an interactive menu to burn and play on a DVD play as you could with iDVD.

I would like to make and burn a DVD as you could with iDVD that was available with OS 10.4 -- is this no longer a possibility with 10.8.2?

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
Apple has clearly indicated in the newest Mac mini and Retina Display MacBook Pro that it plans to get rid of optical disc drives as soon as possible across the board, providing an external USB drive as an option for users who need one.
Users increasingly have fewer opportunities to use optical drives, as the bulk of third party software is now available as a digital download either directly from the vendor or through Apple's App Store. Apple also sees digital distribution as the future of music and movies, as exemplified in Apple TV, which has never included an optical drive.
The company has never supported any new HD optical disc formats on its products, including Microsoft's ill fated HD-DVD or Sony's Blu-ray format, despite initially being involved in the Blu-ray standardization process. Instead, Apple has put its resources behind developing increasingly higher definition audio and video formats that it can distribute electronically through its own iTunes Store.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

Sorry, but your CSS is has been mangled beyound recognition.
The solution is to start with an untouched style sheet. Then add or modify the CSS testing in your browsers as you make the changes.
Have a look at the following where I have positioned the menu. All that is now required is the styling for font and the hover event.

  • Making a DVD with 3 iMovie projects

I am fairly new at making a DVD. I have iMovie 9.0.4 and am on a Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
My question is: I would like to make a DVD with 3 chapters.
Chapter #1 would be an iMovie project (13 minutes)
Chapter #2 would be an iMovie project ( 8 minutes)
Chapter #3 would be an iMovie project (14 minutes)
I have all three of the movie projects completed.
At this time they are all seperate projects in iMovie.
They are the only projects that I have in imovie.
I hope to combine all three projects on one DVD and provide the DVD to classmates for a 50 year reunion.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Good or bad info. To be honest - I never use the SlideShow way - but it's well described in this forum and I tested it to be sure that it works. Problem I came up on was
    • Black framing - One must select to not scale photos in SlideShow
    • Bad sound - as I had to high level it resulted in severe distortion - Lowering it helped
So the problems can be handled - but in reality I rather do
    • One movie containing all parts and Chapter Marks set to match. This too has a built in problem as one can not set Chapter Marks in transitions or within 2 sec from them (OR IN VERY BEGINNING OF MOVIE). But there is a way around this too.
    • Export the combined movie as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
    • Import this QT.mov and now You can set the Chapter Marks (except at very beginning = no need to do this - iDVD does this by it self)
And then I add each Chapter as a free movie too
This works greatly - BUT the Con in this case is that it takes x2 space on DVD. For material less than 60 min this is no problem - but for longer movies one has to be even more elaborate to fix it.
    Good Luck !

  • Making a DVD with HD and SD assets

How can I make a SD DVD with HD and SD assets and retain the highest quality on the HD material? I have tried mixing the short vidoes on an SD timeline in Final Cut Pro, then rendering out the HD and export using Best Quality 90 min DVD settings in Compressor. I then import that file into a DVDSP project, and then chapter out that track and make stories to create separate play buttons for each video and a Play All button as well. The quality of the HD material seems worse than that of the SD material. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. Robin.

Do you know how to best compress HD for optimal play on standard DVD players?
If I am just dealing with HD material, I will send out the timeline as a self-contained .mov in ProRes (I like self-contained, saves some time on re-encoding) then use Compressor to make a SD m2v. You can start with the preset but then go in and change the frame controls to “Better” and also change the encoding rate if there is room to increase the rate.
    Calculating rates [information here|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php]
Can get very good results from HD material delivered as SD format.
When mixing things, it becomes more challenging. Depending on the material (is most of the material HD or SD in original format, can they be edited separately or do they need to go from one to the other to make the movie, etc.) I may try various approaches. If the majority of the footage is HD, I may just go with an HD timeline (though the SD material will not look as good.)
When you say the quality of the HD material is worse, what is worse? Given all things being equal, camera quality (in other words you are not using an extremely high end SD camera and a $300 consumer HD cam, one is really good lighting with little movement, while the other is high speed race cars in streelights at night) the HD footage shouldn't look worse than the SD material...

The DVD has to have some place to go when it completes playing your movie. If you don't want to see a menu, loop your movie. You will then need to use your remote to quit the DVD.
Here is slightly different approach that I use: http://homepage.mac.com/profpixel/AutostartDVD/autostart.htm

  • Making dvd with NO MENUS

is there a simple way to make a movie in imovie with no themes and burn it to a dvd with no themes ? I do have Toast.

sorry for bad linking.. I edited the post and then kazoooomm kaputt...
    as Fred allready told you:
iM has no themes (iM6 HAS themes, but you decide to use or not to use them....), you confuse the usage of iM and iDVD...
I'm just owning ol' Toast6, a version which does NOT allow no-themes on DVDs.. but, I'm pretty sure, using Toast's Help, looking for 'autostart' ('copying' Fred's advice for iDVD...) will guide you ....
