Making an iPhone 4S manual backup to a MacBook Pro does not work in iTunes?

Hello.
I am helping a client's iPhone 4S (iOS 5) to back up his data to his 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.8.2 with updates including the latest iTunes v11 without iCloud). We told iTunes not to automatically synchronize when connected. We did tell it to manual back ups from iPhone to MacBook Pro, but we only saw it back up iPhone's apps. Calendar, Contacts, etc. do not get updated on MacBook Pro's software. We don't want to synchronize. We just want to overwrite iPhone's data to the computer. Did we miss something or is there a bug in this manual backup? My client only updates his data on his iPhone and not the computer.
Thank you in advance.

Backing up will not update the calendar, contacts, etc. on his MacBook Pro; only syncing does that (and it's bi-directional).  Backing up only creates a device backup that can later be used to restore from if necessary.  He can confirm that the backup was successfully created by going to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and checking the Backups list.
Or am I misunderstanding your question?
We do see iTunes' device and ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ showing the backups. We thought manual backups did COMPLETE backups including calendar, contacts, etc. That's disappointing. The problem is synchronizing is that it likes to make duplicates which is quite annoying. We would prefer iTunes overwrite iPhone 4S' datas to computer. He nevers updates/add data on the computer.

I was trying to sync and update my phone with ITunes, about 5 minutes into the process everything stopped.  Now the phone does not work, it will not turn on or off, the screen of the phone shows the Apple Logo and a straight line.  ITunes seems to not "see" the phone.  Suggestions??

Yes, if you have been backing up on a regular basis.
If this is your first time backing up, then no.
you can check edit - preference - backup - see what is listed

iCloud is only available in Lion, 10.7. You will have to upgrade to Lion in order to get into iCloud. If you transfered a .mac or .me address to iCloud through mobile me, or you have another device iCloud enabled, then you can log into the iCloud.com website.

  • Why won't my new iPhone 5s synch/backup to my MacBook Pro, after activating it successfully on the same computer?

Hello! Thanks in advance for your help!!
I successfully launched/started my new iPhone 5s about 3 weeks ago on my MacBookPro. Then recently I tried to synch it/back it up for the first time onto my computer since the 5s was activated.
Unfortunately, it only asks me if I would like to back it up again from my old 4s backup (which I don’t want to do, as I now have a lot of new info on the 5s) - or the second option available is to restore it as a new phone.
How do I get this Mac and/or iTunes to register this 5s phone has already been connected and launched via this computer, and to just SYNCH it or back it up?
…OR - if I did restore it as a new phone, wouldn’t I lose everything and have to start again?
    Currently on OS X Mavericks 10.9.2, iTunes 11.1.5, iPhone 5s iOS 7.1
All tips gratefully received - can not find solutions on internet
    xx

I think you are confusing Backup and Restore. An iPhone Backup takes the information on your phone and puts it on your computer as a database that can be later restored to the phone. Only app and operating system data are backed up to the database. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946 for a list of everything included in a backup. Music and apps are NOT included in the backup because that would be duplication. iTunes music and apps are always available to restore to your iPhone from your iTunes library on your computer or from Apple's servers. Music from other sources (CDs and MP3s from other sites) have to be on your computer, because that is the only way to transfer them to your iPhone.
Restore takes the backup that is on your computer and copies it to the iPhone, overwriting everything on the iPhone.
Photos are a special case. The iPhone includes a digital camera. It works the same way as any other digital camera; you connect the phone to your computer and it will appear as a camera device, separately from iTunes. You can use iPhoto or any other photo app to copy the images off the iPhone's Camera Roll to your computer for safekeeping and editing. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 for examples.

I wish to synch my iPhone 5s in it's current state (with all 3 weeks  additional info), from the phone, over into the Mac. (Hope that makes sense). How can I get this option made available to me?
You do not want to "synch" your 5S to your Mac. You want to BACK UP your 5S to your Mac. Connect the iPhone to your computer, click on its name in iTunes, and click the Backup button.
AFTER this completes you can then sync your music and other iTunes content from your computer to your Mac. As you have now have a current backup (rather than a 3 week old backup) your content will be safe.
You should also back up to iCloud. This is an automatic process once set up; the phone will be backed up to iCloud whenever it is connected to power and has a WiFi connection. To enable this go (on the phone) to Settings/iCloud. Click on Storage & Backup and enable iCloud backup. Once set up it will happen automagically without your having to think about it. • My MacBook Pro does not recognize my iPhone 4 when I connect with USB

As the subject line says, when I connect my iPhone 4 to my MacBook Pro via the USB cable, it normaaaally opens iTunes and iPhoto automatically and syncs and imports photos from the phone. But, for some reason, that doesn't happen anymore... Now when I plug in my iPhone with the USB...nothing happens.
The USB still works as a power charger. I even tried a different newer iPhone USB cable from my friend's phone...same problem. I tried both USB ports.
I update my iPhone, my Mac, my itunes, my iphoto...everything. I reset everything at least a couple times. Still no luck!
I did a Disk Utility verify check...it found no problems, the volume 'appears to be ok.'
The iPhone still syncs with iTunes over WiFi, but unfortunately I can't back up my photos from my iPhone wirelessly (I don't have iCloud set up). I want to do it via USB.
Anyone out there with any advice on how to get my computer to recognize my iPhone?
    THANK YOU!!!

Ive been struggling with this problem all day, I was trying to upload my pics and videos from my iPhone 4s (version IOS-7) and my computer didn't seem to recognize my phone. Well I finally gave up.  My iphone was plugged into my computer via USB, and my iPhoto would not open up automatically like it always had before I updated to IOS-7.
As a last ditch effort I happened to open up my software updates in the apple icon. Lo and behold, once I agreed to update my iTunes app on my mac OSX 10.6.8, it opened my iTunes and a window popped open asking me to click on 'trust this computer'. I did that, and suddenly my iPhoto opened up and filled up with all of my iphone 4s (version IOS 7.1.1) pictures and videos!  I could not find an answer anywhere online. I guess the trick is to manually open up iTunes before you attempt to upload pictures/videos from your iPhone into iPhoto.

  • I trying to backup movies that I have purchase from Iturnes onto a cd and my Macbook pro does not recognize any of the CD or DVDs that I tried,  nothing seems to work can I back up to a external hard drive?

I am trying to backup the movies and TV show that I purchase from Itunes onto a cd or DVD, and nothing seems to work.  I tried using CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW and they all failed. Is it possible to back up to an external hard drive instead of a CD?
    Tyler

I know this isn't a complete answer because I am not sure why or if your backups to CD/DVD are not working, but one thing I do know is yes you indeed can backup any of your iTunes Media (music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc.) to an external hard drive. In fact, it's recommended that you do this anyway (in case of a hard drive crash, computer being stolen, etc.)
You can manually back up your movies by finding them in your iTunes Media folder, or since you have a Mac you can just use Time Machine, which will automatically back up either your entire computer (or only certain folders and items if you want). It's pretty handy. I use a 1TB external and Time Machine to keep everything backed up including my iTunes

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
when connected to the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

  • IPhone with new MacBook Pro - phone not recognized by iTunes

So, I got a new MacBook Pro and connected my iPhone to sync it with iTunes. But the iPhone isn't being recognized.
Anyone know what steps to take to get it to recognize the phone to sync? There are no error messages. Just a phone that doesn't seem to want to sync.
I checked the phone by plugging it into another lap top, and it gets recognized right away, so I'm thinking it's related to the latest iTunes or the MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

Went to the Genius Bar, The tech decised it was a bad logic board. I got a new computer to replace a week old one. After going through setting it up again, I have the same issue. System Profiler sees that an iPhone is connected, but not iTunes. I can not sync to the new MBP. At the moment, I am syncing to my old MBP, just so I have the iPhone set up as I had it.
BTW, if you go through the "iTunes does not see iPhone" suggestions and enter DFU (restore mode) your iPhone gets bricked. But it is recoverable by using a different computer. I am currently trying a NEW install of the OS on the i7, but I suspect a hardware/driver interaction problem. I have no hopes until 10.6.4 arrives in a month or so.

  • Address Book on MacBook Pro does not sync with IPad or Iphone

I have a MacBook Pro with OS10.7.4.  When I add a new address it does not sync with my IPad or IPhone.  However, adding an address on the IPad or IPhone it will appear on the IMac Pro.  I have checked to make sure that the Address Book on my IMac is directed to ICloud.  I also tried to uncheck the Address Book on ICloud, recheck and restart the computer with no success.  What am I missing?

It just started to sync.  Forget the question.

  • Is time capsule the only wireless backup for a macbook pro that will work with Time Machine?

I just got a macbook pro (mid 2012) and I was going to back it up, but the time capsule is very expensive so I was wondering if any other backups worked wirelessly with time me

Any external hard drive can be used for a Time Machine backup, but for network backup I doubt you will find much if anything at a lesser price than a Time Capsule. Plus, the Time Capsule is also a network router.

  • Calendar on MacBook Pro does not sync with iPhone 4s

I used Entourage to sync my calendar entries via iTunes for many years and it worked fine. Recently, however, it stopped syncing my information.  I switched over to Mail and Calendar, hoping that staying within the Apple family it would resolve the issue. Still, my calendar information is not syncing with my iPhone. I use IOS 10.9 Maverick on my MacBook Pro.  My iPhone 4S version is 7.0.4. Any idea why this syncing calendar information is not happening?

I have my iPhone attached via USB cable to my MacBook Pro.
I have been able to successfully sync my calendar now by activating iCloud on my iPhone and via System Preferences on my MacBook Pro after I learned that Maverick does not provide iSync.
However, I have a new problem: The calendar does not "upgrade" (it gets stuck) and I receive a "403" error and it gets stuck in a loop that I have to force quit. I have looked that up in the forum, but wasn't able to solve this issue because the solutions are way to technical and out of my league.
Very disappointed development as removing calendar from iCloud now also deletes all my entries on the Mac.
