Making an iWeb site for dialup users

I'd like tips on using iWeb 08 to make a site (to be part of my mac.com space) that will be suitable for people with dialup connexions to use. This is for a Friends of the Library organization for a rural branch library, and most of our area has no access to broadband internet connexions, or if they do, cannot afford them. I understand keeping the graphics small in download size, and have used the application Imagewell to prepare the photos prior to placing them in iWeb or my Wordpress blog.
But, for example, is there one template that is significantly less complicated/faster to download? I can use "view source" to look at them, and know a little about html, but would appreciate any suggestions on this.
Can "site optimizers" such as Site Soap 1.3.1 or Web Site Maestro 6.5.1 be used with iWeb? Would there be any significant gain, given that I will already be making the images small & fast to download?
Is iWeb contra-indicated for this situation? Should I use some other very simple html editor instead of iWeb?

Website Maestro will significantly reduce you file sizes for faster download.
For a photo example see....

I tried Site Soap way back before I discovered WSM - no comment!

  • Making an iweb site for .mac on a computer with no internet connection

    Hi.
I am making an iweb site for publishing to a .mac account on a computer that is supposed to have internet access via airport, but it's not working properly at the moment.
I would really like to transfer the site onto my other machine in my office which has a decent broadband connection (I have iweb installed on there too). Is it possible to transfer a site that is yet to be published from one computer to another?
    regards
    David T

    David,
You might want to try burning your Domain file to a CD or DVD by using http://iWebFAQ.com/iWebBackup.zip and opening the file & Publish from the other computer while effectively backing up your Domain file in the process.

  • Merge iweb sites from multiple user accounts on same computer

With the previous iweb version, my children created their own iweb sites on their own users, but all under my own .mac account. It worked great.
But now with the new "upgraded" iweb '08, that isn't allowed anymore.
So, I created a new user on our computer for all of us to use to maintain our multiple iweb accounts on.
How can I move multiple iweb sites from multiple users on the same computer into one user?

Each of the user's work in iWeb will be contained in a single file, Domain.sites2, which can be found in this location on the hard drive for each user account. You will need to copy all of these Domain.sites2 files to an external drive, or, at the very least, burn them to a disk to make them transferable from one user account to another. A flash drive also works great for this.
Once you have made all of these Domain files accessible from the new user account that you created, you will still have a formidable task ahead of you, i.e., publishing separate sites, from separate Domain.sites2 files, to the same .Mac account/directory. In other words, bringing all of these Domain files together for access by a single user account will not solve the problem. You may very well be able to solve the problem with things the way they are, but it will involve some shuffling of Site's files on the iDisk prior to publishing.
The method I'm going to give you has worked well for me. So far, here in the forums, I've read posts from (2) other users who were also successful. Conversely, I know of at least (3) other users who have been unsuccessful with this approach. I sure hope it works for you.
Open System Preferences and go to .Mac. Turn syncing off, if it is on, and leave it off.
Now, in Finder, navigate to the current Site files on your iDisk, following this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/NameOfSiteFolder
Drag the Site folder that is named for your site, (not the directory Site folder), back one level on the iDisk, into the Web folder. This is where some run into difficulties--you may get an error message that the folder is "in use, and cannot be moved". I have never gotten this message, and am able to move my Site's folders around with no problem on the iDisk.
If you are successful moving the folder, choose one of your other accounts on your machine, launch iWeb, and Publish all to .Mac. The existing site on the server will not be deleted. Now, go back to the iDisk and move that site folder, (the one you just published), back one level, again, to the root Web directory. Publish your next site, from your next account.
When you are finished publishing sites, just move the Site folders back to their original location on the iDisk--Web/Sites/SiteFoldersHere. All sites will be accessible from a browser using the web.mac.com/username/nameofsite url.
It is important to use the Publish all to .Mac command in iWeb. A simple Publish to .Mac command will not put the correct index.html file in place on the server.
Post back and inform us of your success.

  • Built iWeb site for friend with my account. How can I transfer site to his?

Hi everybody. I recently finished creating an iWeb site for a friend while using my MobileMe account. What's the best way to transfer this site to his MobileMe account (so his username, etc. shows up in the url; not mine). I'd like to avoid having to rebuild the entire site while using his version of iWeb/MobileMe.
Am I in trouble or is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Will your friend be maintaining the site once it's published to his MobileMe account? If so just copy the domain.sites2 file containing his site to his computer and put it in his User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Once he logs into his MobileMe account via the System/MobileMe preference pane he can make changes and published them to his account.
If you also have a site in that same domain file, duplicate that file, open it with iWeb and delete your site before transferring it to your friend's Mac. Then delete his site from your domain file leaving just your own site. You can delete his site from your MMe account by mounting your iDisk, going to the iDisk/Web/Site folder and deleting the folder that has his site's name.

I am sorry if thie is republished-My first time doing this and I am not sure what goes where and where to hear feedback.
Have published iweb site for five years with no problems and just opened a new site and get -
    404: Page not found
This error is generated when there was no web page with the name you specified at the web site.-
    Troubleshooting suggestions:
Ensure the page you are linking to exists in the correct folder.
Check your file name for case sensitivity . Index.htm is not the same as index.htm!
Temporarily disable any rewrite rules by renaming your .htaccess file if it exists
    is the problem with
    iweb or with hosting?
One Apple tech started to fix Iweb and had to end session and the next said problem with hosting at Network Solutions as it published
to local folder. NWS has checked sttting a few times-
Any help would be extremely appreciated as trying to fix this for about five weeks
    Thanks VG

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. (Even though I've now noticed you mis-spelled it! - anyway, never post your address in a forum.)
You have a site here: http://virginiagordon.com/www.virginiagordon.com/WELCOME.html
If that's not the page you are having trouble with, what is that page's URL?

How can I allow or block the use of local storage by specific sites for all users in my domain.
I tried to do this by MMS.cfg but it is not working, the problem is also described in your blog "http://forums.adobe.com/message/3272907".

Wow, cor-el... Did you -intend- your reply to be inane, inappropriate and completely inapplicable?
How would that possibly do what I asked?
You -might- consider '''''reading''''' the question, -=before=- you reply. And it's really okay to NOT REPLY if you just don't know. Just an idea.

  • How do I enable a site for Contribute users?

I'm sorry if this is a very basic question, but I have been
through the tutorials and much of the help in Contribute 3 and it
all seems to be focused on what to do with an existing, Contribute
enabled site. What I want to do is find out about what comes before
that - how to enable a site for Contribute users. I can't find
anything that explains how to do this. I've also looked through
what I assume are the files used by the Trio Motor Company tutorial
and I can't see anything that marks that out as being a Contribute
enabled site. I'm not even sure whether or not Contribute needs
special programs to be running on the server.
    I'm probably missing something.
    TIA

Site/Manage Sites .. select your site and Edit.
Go to the Advanced Site Definition Window. Next to last in
    the menu column
is Contribute. Select that and check the check box.

  • Utility to show download time (for dialup users)?

I manage a site for the local Friends of the library
    www.forl.org
We live in a rural area where there are still many dial-up users: either high speed is too expensive, or unavailable. As I make additions & changes, I'd like to keep an eye on how long a page takes for a dialup user to download. This sort of thing used to be standard in html editors but now there's the assumption that everyone has broadband and I have not found anything for OS X that will do this task.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Fast connection speed doesn't automatically translate to fast page load times. Ask anyone on a modern "high speed" connection.
Web browsers still use "cached files" to intercept previously load page elements (until the cache is cleared) to assist page load times.
The speed of your server (combined by your connection speed) and "bandwidth usage" is a better guide. Your files are served by Apple and the largest file on your start page is:
http://web.mac.com/akantha/forl/Scripts/iWebSite.js (made by the iWeb software and also cached) at 109KB's.
http://www.mac.com/st/1/sharedassets/1.1/Common/Templates/Watercolor/About%20Me/ navgb_blue-1.jpg is the third largest page element. You can view the individual files use in your Web pages by using the Safari Activity window.
Since you have no control over the server speed or the "bandwidth" limits (both controlled by your MobileMe account) there is little you can do to "speed things up".
    My 2¢?
Don't worry about things out of your control. Your pages and your service is just fine for dial up users.

  • IWeb site for selling my books

I'm an author who is selling my books on an old web site where my Merchant account provided HTML snippits to create a shopping basket where customers can buy my books. When they put in their credit card data it transfers the $ to my bank account, and I get an email and ship my books to them.
I have created a new iWeb site to replace the old one on NetWork solutions at my domaine www.deepwaterspress.com and do not know how to put my merchant account HTML snippits into my iWeb site on Mobile me. Please advise. Thanks,

Harold ~ Welcome to the discussions. The MobileMe Terms of Service states:
"The Service is designed for personal individual use and is not intended to be used for commercial business purposes, including, but not limited to, transacting online sales or software distribution via an e-commerce site."
The addition of an HTML Snippet is briefly shown in this video tutorial:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/web/iweb08.html#livecontent
An alternative to HTML Snippets is to hyperlink from your iWeb site to a free e-commerce page at Weebly — see the video here:
    http://blog.weebly.com/2/post/2009/05/announcing-weebly-e-commerce-features.html
If that's suitable, you may even want to consider building your entire site in Weebly.
By the way, a tip... Instead of posting your site's URL like this:
    www.deepwaterspress.com
    ...include the prefix like this:
    http://www.deepwaterspress.com
...then it will be easily clickable in your post. And before posting, you can switch from Compose mode to Preview mode to verify that the hyperlink actually goes to your site when clicked.

  • Iweb site for use with my own hosting company, not .mac

    Hello,
What I would like to do is setup a photo album site in iweb but export it to ftp to my own hosting company.
I noticed on a link found here that if you do so you lose the ability to have a slideshow......will this effect the ability for a person to click on a picture to advance to the next picture?
I have tried phpalbum and looked at gallery program but I dont know scripting or programming so I am lost there.....iweb photo album page seems the best way to go.
    Any advice would be helpful!!!
    Thanks

    Hi PB,
That's not true. It maybe was using iWeb '06 but not iWeb '08. Just create your photopage, go to file=>publish to a folder, upload the resulting files to your server using your FTP application and you're done.
Everything works: slideshow, pictures overview, single picture.
I'm uploading my site to non .mac, have a look at this photo page:
    http://alyeska.altervista.org/photos/Ontheroad/Pages/Iceland.html
An alternative would be using SimpleViewer which is really easy to use too, have a look at point 3 for examples

  • Making a new website for another user

    Hi all,
How can I make a completely new website for someone else without publishing my own pages to a map? Do I just delete my pages from the published material or does my index page go beserk when I do that?
    Thanks for your input!

By MMe I'm referring to a MobileMe account thru Apple. As I recall that's normal for iWeb 2 when you have multiple sites in one domain file. If you're running the latest iWeb 2, 2.0.4, you can split the sites into two domain files. That way you can open, edit and publish only the site you want.
I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and jthen only republish the one I want.

  • Transfer iWeb site to new user

I designed a site on one .mac account and want to move it to another .mac account I run so that the URL is different. I've set up another user on my computer so iWeb will upload to the appropriate .mac account, but... how do I import the previous iWeb-designed data over to my new user? I've tried dropping the User/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain file into the new username (same location) but when I try to upload it says "You don't have permission to make changes to that file".

    when I
try to upload it says "You don't have permission to
    make changes to that file".
What exactly does the "upload" mean here? When you try to publish?

  • Cannot Load HTTPS Sites For One User Account

I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a problem on his iMac. He's got his family setup using different user accounts and with one of those accounts, he is not able to access any HTTPS sites (gmail, yahoo, bank of america, etc). It works fine with all the other user accounts as do any regular HTTP sites with the account in question. He has done the usual trouble shooting (delete cookies, reset Safari, delete safari plist, repair permissions, etc) but the problem still exists with the one account. The account is for one of his kids so it's always possible some setting got changed by mistake or it could be something else.
    Anyone has any ideas?

    HI Eric,
Go to Safari/Preferences and select the Security tab.

  • How to set the default web site for WGM users

    Hi,
In Tiger server there was a place to input the URL of the default web page for all browsers when users logged into network home folders. This was really helpful and saved a bunch of bandwidth and class time. Is there any way to do this in Leopard server? If so, please point me in the right direction.
    Thanks,

Antonio, Thanks! That seems to have worked for Safari. However, we like Firefox too, and I tried to set that up the same way, but was told "can't find a manifest for that app". I wonder if I can copy the Safari list then alter and rename it?
