Making Anamorphic Sequence in FCP Standalone QT Movie 16:9

Seems like whatever I try I can't get an anamorphic sequence to turn out 16:9 when I make a QT Standalone in FCP. They always come out 4:3.
Any ideas?

Coupla ways. Open the file in QT and hit Apple-J... then with the top name (file name) selected... hit the Presentation TAB and check Conform Aperture to: CLEAN.
Or - IF you are using QT Conversion... use the OTHER tab after you set your quality to change SIZE to something that reflects 16:9 -- like 480x270.
Good luck,

  • 16:9 sequence becomes 4:3 QT movie

I'm using FCPHD 4.5 with 16:9 DV footage (720x480 anamorphic)
I edit my sequence in FCP in 16:9 (Pixel aspect is NTSC CCIR 601 and Anamorphic is checked) and do an Export/Quicktime Movie (DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic)
I open the resulting file in QT Pro and it is displayed as 4:3.
Same if I open the file in FCP.
I have in the past opened this kind of file and have had it display correctly.
It seems like if I add a filter or text generator, this is when the problem begins. (and won't go away)
    Any ideas?

sad to say but it seems to be a bug in the way FCP writes the file header info, metadata or whatever it is.
In particular, this issue has actually gotten worse from 4.x to 5.x. At least with FCP 4.x, if you exported a QT Movie, then (re)imported it into your project, the clip would be recognized as anamorphic. No such luck in FCP 5.x.
Just so I don't confuse anyone, QT Player never has recognized the anamorphic flag in a QT Movie. That is, File > Export > QuickTime Movie or Final Cut Pro Movie (for those who remember FCP 3). But at least FCP used to. Now even that doesn't happen...
try using MPEG Streamclip ... works a treat. take any 4:3 clip and "Export to Quicktime..." press the Options button and change it to 16:9. let the exporter write the file, and then open it in QT (ta da!) go ahead and open it in FCP too, check the clip properties ... still 4:3 frame size but note that the anamorphic flag is checked
As you're no doubt aware, this mimics the File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion workflow so long as the machine in question has QuickTime 7.1 (down to the ability to select Aspect Ratio and Scan Mode) and results (like QT Conversion) in both QT & FCP recognizing the anamorphic nature of the clip.
Now, I bring all this up (that I know you're aware of) because you state in a few posts that exporting via QT Conversion causes all frames to be recompressed and that's a big no-no. Can you share the basis of that claim?
My understanding is that with QT conversion - so long as the key details (codec, frame rate/size, scan mode, etc) are identical to the settings of your sequence) - no (re)compression takes place. What I've read is that it's essentially the same thing as exporting a self-contained QT movie, except with better metadata information (true display size, associated applications, etc).

  • Problem importing Sequence from FCP 7 to Color 1.5!!!!!

I am trying to export a Sequence from FCP 7 into Color and am experiencing problems. When I send the Sequence to Color from FCP 7 Color receives the incorrect in and out points for many of the clips in my original FCP sequence. All of the footage being used was captured with the same settings from the same camera (Canon xha1). I have made all of the clips in my sequence that had basic motion effects into self-contained QT movies, so the basic motion ramping I've done shouldnt be a problem, right? There are no filters on the clips either. After hours and hours of searching, reading, and trial and error I cant figure out why Color will not recognize and play the clips as they appear in FCP. This is killing me and the project I am working on is due ASAP.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

In the Logging Info tab in Item Properties, the self contained QT movies I made have a TC Rate of 24 whereas the normal clips from the sequence have a TC rate of 30. Could this be the reason Color wont read the sequence correctly?
I have tried to remake the self contained QT movies with the Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 30p 48khz setting, yet still the TC Rate shows 24. What am I doing wrong?
You probably have "24" fps media on a 29.97 fps timeline, which would explain a few other things, especially why the in/out points are wrong on the COLOR timeline. COLOR does not look at express timecodes -- it functions like a good old fashioned EDL and works on durations -- so if the frame rate disagrees, the trims will also be incorrect.
I have no idea how you are making the self-contained QTs. Are you using Export QT, or Conversion? Are you manipulating the export settings in any way? Are you exporting from the timeline?
I myself am very disappointed with Apple's inability to cope with 23.98/29.97, because you are also dealing with three flavours of cadence/pull-down, not all of which are handled correctly, especially with ProRes.

  • Anamorphic sequence not producing anamorphic export

when I am doing some quick and dirty editing and correction, I use the method of cutting in FCP, then exporting that to a quicktime movie...I make the movie self-contained and select "Current Settings" in the Save box you get right after selecting Export>Quicktime movie.
I can then toss the original, large clip and work with the smaller one. I've done this loads of times and it's worked great, except for this evening. The exported clip doesn't come back in as anamorphic, even tho I captured as anamorphic, my editing sequence is anamorphic, so I'd hope that "Current Settings" would include the anamorphic setting.
when I pull that exported movie back into a Duplicated of the sequence from which I exported (clips deleted, of course) I get that squashed picture with black at right and left.
I've retraced my steps a few times and other movies I've done this with turn out OK...I don't get why this one is not able to be re-imported with the proper aspect ratio.
    Any hints?
    Thank you!

What version of FCP are we talking here?
This might not relate to your situation but there are situations where I've found when using FCP 6 (up to and including 6.0.2, at least) where if a DV-NTSC Anamorphic sequence doesn't contain renderable material - ie, you've just made cuts and that's it, no render files to reference or export with - exporting that sequence (as Current Settings) results in a 4:3 ratio QT movie. That is, I opened up the QT movie and it showed 640x480 as the display size.
Sorry if that's no help, but I was banging my head against a wall until I 'discovered' this issue a month or two ago...

  • Copy and paste clips to anamorphic sequence...having trouble

I captured all my broll DV/DVCPRO NTSC Anamorphic. I started editing on a sequence that was not checked for anamorphic under Sequence Settings.
In order to fix this, I created a new sequence with the anamorphic box checked and copied all of my edits from the previous sequence. Now it seems like the anamorphic has been applied twice, like it seems widescreen twice over.
I was wondering if it were possible to copy my edits from the wrong sequence and paste them into the sequence with right settings, while keeping the correct anamorphic view. If not, then it seems I would have to redo all my edits on the correct sequence.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Jeff, when you copied and pasted your edits then those clips retained all previously applied settings, filters etc, including those distortions automatically applied by FCP that made your anamorphic clips display properly in the older non-anamorphic sequence .. what you need to do is to remove those distortions:
Select all the clips in the new timeline (Cmd-A) then invoke the Remove Attributes dialog (Cmd-Opt-V) and put a tick in the Distort checkbox, then click OK.
That should do it ... although if you did any intentional distortions then those will have to be redone as they will be removed along with the automatic anamorphic distortion.
    Cheers

  • Anamorphic Sequence to Widescreen DVD

I having been working on a quick three minute project in FCE 3.0. It was captured in hdv, then after it was edited, I placed it into a DV Anamorphic sequence and rendered it. However when I export the anamorphic sequence as a quicktime movie to burn in idvd 6, it shows up as 4:3 and it has not been letterboxed. I have searched the forum and I'm still not able to figure out what to do to get my anamorphic sequence to be a letterboxed 4:3 video when it goes onto a dvd. I've read about the anamorphicizer but I do not have quicktime pro. Is there another way to do this?
Edit: I have tried just exporting the AIC HDV sequence as a quicktime movie and it works fine, but I'm not sure if thats the right way to do it since I've read alot about putting it into a dv sequence and then exporting that.

Great solution available for free called Anamorphicizer. Sorry, don't have an address, but google can find it.
You simply drop your movie file onto the anamorphicizer icon and it creates a letterbox version that iDVD will respect and display properly.

  • Exporting sequence metadata embedded in a movie?

We have a project with many different sequences, each representing a different DVD's worth of information. Each sequence has unique metadata, involving year, subject, etc. (we were using the comments fields for this) We were testing sequence exports using Quicktime conversion, but when we brought the generated movie files back into a different project file in FCP, the metadata was not preserved in the newly generated media.
Is there any way to accomplish this? Can we "embed" sequence metadata into an exported movie file?

That isn't SEQUENCE metadata, that is CLIP metadata. Anything in the MASTER COMMENTS or LOG NOTES fields, those are tied to the Browser and project. They will not be included in any data that you export as a Quicktime movie. Even if you made a lot of comments and filled in all the fields on the clip, if you export ONLY THAT CLIP as a QT movie...those comments will not follow. They are tied to the project.
You can put MARKERS on the timeline, make them chapter markers and make comments there. That information will be retained in the exported file.

  • Audio drift on FCP self-contained movie output

I just output a 25 minute show as a self-contained FCP QT file, which I was was then going to throw into Compressor. The exported QT file started experiencing audio drift at about 7 minutes, and it looks like it's about a second off by the end of the show.
In FCP, the sequence is in sync, al the way through the end. The sequence is 1920x1080 XDCAM 24p.
I've never had this happen in a self-contained movie, and ideas what could be happening here?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

UPDATE: It looks like the audio may be off by the same amount starting at one point in the QT file through the rest of the show.

Is the total duration of your sequence and your exported QuickTime movie exactly the same?
I have seen FCP actually skipping frames on export of XDCAM HD422 sequences.
Try importing your self-contained QuickTime movie and put it on a video layer above your original sequence. Zoom in at the end of your sequence and see if the total duration matches up. If not, you know you have issues with frames getting skipped on export to QuickTime Movie. If you look closely in the QuickTime Movie file you might even notice by looking at the timecode in QuickTime Player that certain frames are skipped. It is possible to spot these areas by looking for places with motion where you easily can see any jarring jumps caused by frame skipping.
Here is a possible workaround. Copy the clips from your XDCAM HD sequence, paste them in a ProRes HQ sequence and export a QuickTime movie of that. It might also help just deleting all render files before exporting. Seems like FCP (or rather the XDCAM HD codec) gets confused by the render files on export when calculating the new GOP structure.

  • Exporting anamorphic sequence to Quicktime

I'm trying to export an anamorphic sequence to Quicktime to post online. As I understand it, Quicktime doesn't acknowledge the anamorphic flag on a video file, but I came across a workaround in this article ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75079 ) which suggests altering the video size upon exporting.
Problem is, when I follow the recommended procedure, the QT player window actually IS widescreen, but the video inside is not, making it pillarboxed (black columns on left and right). So it's back to the drawing board. Anybody have any suggestions or success at doing what I'm trying to do?

Try a custom size of 360 x 202, 180 x 101 etc. Works well, so it all the time without pillarboxing occurring. This is what I have been doing for HDV 1080/60 items.
(FWIW when 16:9 video is encoded for 4:3 playback [ with letterbox settings from the player without adding anything to the video itself] the resulting MPEG is 720 x 404, so these numbers are based on the same ratio. )
If this way does not work, try doing this by opening the item in QT then following the same steps.

  • Sequence Settings FCP to Color and back again

Sorry in advance if i missed the answer to this when previously searching the forum.
Ok, I have a sequence in FCP. I duplicate it removing any problematic effects and place it all on one time line. I send the sequence to Color. In the settings I notice that the quick time settings are a different ratio to my fcp settings. I change them to 1440 x 1080 (same as FCP). When I send the rendered graded sequence back to FCP the sequence changes to a different frame size?
I can go into sequence settings in FCP and change them but is there a way of keeping the same aspect ratio / pixel ratio and dimensions between the 2 applications.
It feels like I have missed a step when setting the applications up but I can't find where.
Any help will be much appreciated

    morphretouch,
Since you are working w/an interlaced format you should be aware of a couple of bugs in Color that will cause the program to mess up your field order. The first bug is using certain nodes in the Color FX room and the second bug is caused by resizing/reframing in the Geometry room (this includes resizes that are done in FCP as that information is carried over into Color). Even if you resize something in Color and then hit the "reset" button the bug will still happen because Color still thinks you resized the image (the border of the frame in the Geometry room will be red instead of white).
More details about the Color FX bug can be found here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/using_color_fxnode.html
A work around for the Geometry room bug can be found here:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/223/7110
The work around is in a post by Saul Budd, about half down the page, and starts with the line "I've just had a "D'oh!" moment ..."

  • How to setup Compressor to create video from multiple sequences within FCP?

I am wondering how I can set compressor up to create videos from multiple sequences within FCP. When I click file -> export - > compressor for a sequence and go into the program, it doesn't allow me to go back into FCP. I just get a spinning beach ball. Is there no way to set it up so I can prep a bunch of fcp sequences within compressor and then click submit and walk away? I have over 100 sequences that need to be exported so it would be a little difficult to do this one at a time. Thanks.

    Batch processing
*Step one. Make sure everything in every sequence is rendered.*
*Step two. Make a folder somewhere and name it something relevant.*
*Step three. In FCP select all you sequences that you want to compress and right click (option), choose Batch Export from the contextual menu.*
*Step three point one. In the batch export window click on settings and choose the folder you made in step two for the destination. Make sure Make Self-Contained is not check and include Audio and Video.*
*Step four. Click export in the batch window.*
Once that is done you can close FCP.
    Now in Compressor
*Step five. Make a setting that will give you the output that you want (mpeg2, AC3, h.264, whatever). Make a destination for where you want to save the output.*
*Step six. Make a droplet from the settings you made in step five.*
    You can quit Compressor now.
*Step seven. Take the files that you batch exported from FCP in step three and four and drop them on the droplet you made in step six.*

  • How do I sequence pictures in slideshow or movie

how do I sequence pictures in slideshow or movie
    1. I tried to drag in thumbnail pictures but can't get the page to move where I want to place the pic
    2. Tried to move pictures in movie project, but they are so small on the bottom and seem to come up in threes when I just want to move one picture at a time.

If delivering your content from an LMS, there should be an option to play the content in a separate browser window...without toolbars.  This makes it a lot easier to predict what size you need to build your course.
After factoring in all the variables and using trial and error on a number of systems, with and without LMSs, I've found a size of 995x627 to be almost ideal.  It's big enough to display most software apps and websites, but small enough to be viewable by users on 1024x768 systems.
You have to remember that if you have a significant number of end-users on 1024x768 and that's the lowest common resolution you need to build for, then you CANNOT make your screen size 1024x768.  You have to build smaller to allow for toolbars, browser chrome, etc.
One of the first things any wise elearning developer does when they begin a project, before they start creating content, is to survey their user base and find out what constraints are imposed within which they need to work.  Things like monitor resolution, Flash-player version, LMS, bandwidth all play a part in the success or failure of your project.  Find out early rather than later.

  • Exporting Sequence from FCP

    Forum,
I sent part of a sequence from FCP to STP, but it's not in sequence anymore. It's broken back down into the original clips.
How can I edit in STP without losing the structure of the sequence that I spent so much time on?
    Thanks,
    Trey

I remember having to do a mixdown in each of my nests when dealing with this issue in 4.5.
You can also do an end-run around FCP's mis-management of the audio renders by manually throwing away the audio render files for the project in the finder and re-opening the project.
You might also try using the Advanced Format Conversion in Compressor, as that should ignore any pre-rendered material from your sequence.
Also, I have seen this problem when combining 44.1k audio (from a music CD) and 48k audio (from digital video) in the same 48k sequence. You might find it helps in the long run to re-export the CD audio as 48k and replace the music in your sequences.
    Hope this helps -

  • Anamorphic sequence question

Hi, I'm working with anamorphic footage in a project. If a sequence has been edited in a non-anamorphic sequence in the same project, is there a way to copy the edited footage to an anamorphic sequence without it coming in with added black bars?
    thanks very much.

When you copy the anamorphic material to the anamorphic sequence, the material should be fine. If there is any distortion, load the clip into the VIEWER and select the MOTION tab>DISTORTION and change the RATIO to 0 (zero)
    good luck.
