Making Application Windows Individually Selectable

Hello all,
Is there any way to set up Lion so that application windows are individually selectable, and do not trigger the display of all windows for a given applicaiton? As a default, when I am working with two word documents open and I select a Firefox window, then return to my primary Word document, the secondary word document appears and covers the Firefox window that I'm working with. I'd like to have the secondary word document stay behind the Firefox window until I need it. I know I could minimize the secondary word doc, but I have a tendancy to forget that minimized windows are open.
I'm working on combining a lot of information from different sources to make a class outline, and I'd love to be able to individually select an applicaiton window without triggering the other windows that are open for that application. Is there a way to make this happen in Lion or with a third-party program?
Thanks for any help!

Office has had a history of doing that, at least from what I've seen on my Mac. The whole Spaces/Expose/Mission Control seems too much for the Microsoft SE's to handle. Even if I invoke MC, pick the document I want frontmost, Word still finds another to bring forward.
I haven't noticed that type of behavior in anything else.

I can’t set shortcut for „Application windows” — first column with Fn key is OK, but the second column with mouse button doesn’t work. If I set „secondary mouse button” for „application windows”, it doesn’t work. But if I set „secondary mouse button” to „All windows”, it works! All mouse shortcuts for „All windows” or „Show desktop” work, but no mouse shortcut for „Application windows” work . The same with „Mouse button 3” and other buttons.
    Can you help me, please?

Do you see the iTunes Library icon in the window? Click on it and the use the scroll bar to get to the tracks you want.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Application window not working, must go to dock

I am having a strange thing happen both on my mac at home and my one at work. Sometimes when I click on the application window, it will not come forward. I have to go to the dock and click on it to select it. This happens quite a bit in the print dialog.. but happens in a lot of other applications.

I would like to add that Comcast is my internet provider. Perhaps that is part of the issue although the Connection Doctor confirms the mail box is connecting to the internet. No other function processes when Connection Doctor program is used to find the source of the issue. I have read forum posts but am unable to find a way to get my Apple mail to be delivered to my computer. It worked fine up until I chose to transfer mail to the Cloud. My mail account is a .mac account.
Still hoping someone out there can help me.
    thanks,

  • Viewing application windows in full size on a macbook pro

I connect my macbook pro to a 23 inch screen in my office. When not connected to this external screen, I find that one of my windows in Interface Builder is longer than the vertical length of my 17" macbook screen. How do I scan down to see the bottom portion of my IB screen? I suspect this is a problem with any application window this is maximized on a large external screen and then viewed on the laptop's much smaller screen. Thanks for any help!!

Most applications have a menu item labeled Window and if you drop down Window, usually there will be a Zoom selection. If Interface Builder has that, try clicking on Zoom and see if the trouble window snaps back to being within the smaller screen of the MBP.
Another method that might work, if there are other open windows in Interface Builder for which you can see the green resize button at the top left of the window, try Option-clicking on that green button and that should cause the resize action to take place for all of IB's open windows.
If that doesn't work, one thing you can try is lowering the MBPs resolution through Displays preferences and then restoring the original resolution. That should have the effect of resizing all the open windows to a screen fitting size.
If none of those work, write back. I still have two other methods that might work but I'm getting tired of typing these out

Firefox no longer opens PDF files. Explorer works OK. I have checked the Applications window in the Tools/Options and it says I am using PDF-xChange viewer....It just does not do anything. I get the message in the Download Error window which says...."could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder. Is the same error which I get when I attempt to open a PDF file on a webpage using the Firefox browser....Explorer works OK so I am now forced to Explorer to read PDF files via a browser.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After removing a old copy of PDF-xChange Viewer and updating to the last version

The error message suggests that the file (pdf) that you're trying to download cannot be saved in the folder Firefox tries to save it in.
This can be due to several things - it could be a non-existing folder (could be a problem with the updated application), the hard drive could be too full to store the file (less likely if you can generally surf the net without error messages) or it could contain an error.
To complicate things a little further, it seems to me that you have (at least) 3 different PDF-handling plugins in Firefox from different programs:
    PDF-XChange Viewer Netscape Gecko Plugin
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.3.2"
    Zeon PDF Plugin For Mozilla
This shouldn't matter too much, thou, as it will most likely simply use either the latest installed or the first one it finds when looking up associations for files of type 'pdf'.
First, in Tools > Options... > tab General > section File download, select "Save files in" and Browse your way to a (non-writeprotected!) folder on a drive where you're certain there is enough free space - like the Desktop folder to make the files end up on your Windows desktop.
Second, under Applications as you mention yourself, find all document types related to PDF files, and set these to one of the programs. Check the entire list to be sure there isn't one hiding under one of the other programs' document types (Adobe Acrobat document, PDF X-Change and Zeon).
Restart Firefox, and try opening a PDF again.
If it fails once more, try changing the documents again to one of the other programs, like "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)".
If it STILL fails, change it to simply "Save file". Then you can simply browse your way to the download folder with Windows Explorer, and doubleclick the PDF file to see which program actually handles PDF files as default on the machine, and if it works properly.
If Firefox flatly refuses to save the PDF files in a folder which you're certain both exist and has space for the file, some (probably security related) program is most likely interfering with Firefox, preventing it in storing PDF files on the system.

  • Is there a way to view just one open Finder window (without any other Finder or other application windows coming into view) from a Desktop hot corner in Yosemite?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Previously, I could view just one open Finder window by viewing the Desktop via a hot corner and then selecting Finder from the Dock. This would pull only the top Finder winder into view, without showing any other open Finder windows, and most importantly, any other open application windows. I could then easily drag files/folder from my Desktop into the Finder window (which I do A LOT). Since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever I use the Desktop hot corner and select Finder from the Dock, it pulls every open application and Finder window back into view, putting Finder in front.
Is there any way to view just one already open Finder window (or all Finder windows for that matter) without seeing all other open applications, without having to Hide the other applications or using Spaces?

Yes I've created an Automator Application that does the job, but the "watch me do" function that does the Mail Merge is a rather Clunkey work around, as the mouse moves all over the place, thats the part i want to remove and replace with a script, or work out a different way around it that avoids the "watch me do" function.
Is this Possible? or where/who is there i can ask to write me a script, im not a novice to scripting, but i am a novice to Applescript.

  • I've lost two application windows -- how do I get them back?

I can't access two application windows -- Mail and Spotlight. I sometimes use a external monitor so this may be related to that.
When I switch to Mail, the Mail menu appears on top, but I do not see the window with my mailboxes in it. When I use Expose to see all the open windows, there's my Mail window, in light purple. I click on it, to select it, and the window zoooms away to the left, never to be seen again. The top menu indicates that I'm in Mail.
The same thing happens to me with Spotlight. I can search in Spotlight, but the results are in an inaccessible window that zooms away when I try to select it in Expose.
Plugging in an external monitor again does not retrieve the window, regardless of whether I mirror the displays or not. After searching these forums, I tried changing the screen resolution to 640x480 instead of 1024x768 but that didn't help. I looked in Library/Preferences to see if I could trash some preferences, but neither application seems to have any, that I know how to identify.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just in case this comes up for anyone else... I got the windows BACK by hooking my computer up to the external monitor, and REVERSING the arrangement of the monitors (so the one that was on the left was on the right, and vice versa). This placed the window in my field of view and I was able to retrieve it.

    Hello Everyone,
We have a problem in opening .swf files in our application.
We had quick time movies(.mov) which we used to open and

Can you please suggest me as how should I proceed, i.e which
framework should I use in the code to open and play .swf files in
    the application window?
It will be better, if you can send me a small sample code to
use in my application for MacOSX.
    Awaiting for your kind reply,
    Thanking you,

  • Disappearing Application Windows?

    Hi,
    I am running mac os x 10.5.5 on a 3.06 24inch imac with 4gb ram.
recently I have a worsening issue with application windows disappearing. It seems to happen with all applications intermittently & i cant pin down why it is happening.
I do use spaces & have some applications set to run in certain spaces but this really doesnt seem to effect the problem.
For example i will be working away in space 2 with mail & that will be fine. If I go to space 4 where itunes should be, spaces moves to the space but there is nothing visible from itunes window wise. I get the menus accross the top as itunes but no wimdows for the app.
If i go back to space 2 with mail & click i tunes in the dock, it takes me to space 4 & I have the itunes menus again but no windows.
If I check all of my spaces individually, none of the itunes windows are in any of the other spaces.
The only work around that i have found for this is if i go to the dock, click the app icon & choose hide when something has already disappeared.
If I then click the app icon in the dock again & choose show, spaces kicks in, takes me to the correct space & the application appears with the windows.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem any better than that>? Surely mac os shouldnt be doing this?

I don't use Leopard (yet), but I've heard of a bug with Spaces that causes applications to start on virtual desktops that don't exist any more, which sounds similar to what you're seeing.
If you've disabled Spaces, re-enable it, and make sure all your applications are set to start up on the first virtual desktop. (Again, I don't use Leopard yet, so I don't know if you actually can enable/disable Spaces, but I do know you can tell apps which virtual desktop to open on.)

Thanks for the response, that sounds like an easier way to get everything back at once rather than one app at a time.
I was beginning to think that I was the only person with this problem, in a way its nice to hear someone else has it too.
It would be even better if it can get fully resolved in an update though!
    Thanks again

  • How do I select all clips in a large project with out individually select each clip?

I have a large project with ~1000 clips (still jpgs).  My question is how do I select all of the clips without individually selecting each clip?

Thanks for the reply with additional information.
The suggestion given would be applicable to your Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7.
As an aside, have you updated 12 to 12.1 yet? If not, please do so using an opened project's Help Menu/Update. The major perk of the update
is that it corrects an Expert workspace Text/Style issue. There are other less defined advantages included.
Please let us know if the suggestion for Select All worked for you.
    Thanks.

  • How does "New Window Containing Selection" under "Services" work in Snow Leopard?

    Hello all,
In OSX 10.5.8 creating simple clickable server paths was a cinch via Services > TextEdit > New Window Containing Selection [please see reference images]. However, in Snow Leopard this option is a grand mystery. Our online searches have been surprisingly unsuccessful.
I realize Services is now customizable in Snow Leopard, which is great. However, when creating paths from the Snow Leopard system the only choice is to launch Mac Mail with an attachment (when highlighting a file to create a path). Since we don't use Mac Mail, is there an option to switch the default Mac Mail to Entourage? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Same for me, this is a very annoying bug! I often open Audio MIDI setup to remind myself of my various MIDI connections, and untangling the mess that is displayed is a big waste of time! C'mon Apple - just get the application to honor the X and Y coordinates that are stored in the config (.mcfg) file!!

  • Maximizing an application window

Mac newbie here; former windows user.
How do I mazimize an application window. I.e. the equivalent of right clicking on the title bar in Windows and selecting Windows?

    Eric:
I've always considered the ability to maximize a working window a great feature of Windows. Moreover, it's much better than Apple's unpredictable "change size" button. It finally got to me and I decided to kvetch. Posting in an old thread seemed better than starting a new one.
And of course there is a "full screen" mode, it's just that you have to grab the window, move it up and left, then grab the right-hand corner and drag down and right.
Having owned a Macintosh continuously since 1988, and an OSX fan since Puma, I'm not about to abandon it over a silly UI choice. Indeed the flexibility of OSX gives me hope that Apple can and will create a preference file for certain UI decisions.
