Making Big Prints

Hi,
I'm trying to get a getter handle on the principles and options for creating the best large and very large scale prints from digital files.  I'm more than well versed in the basics of Photoshop and color management but there remain some issues I've never dealt with.
It would be very helpful if you could give me some advice about some specific questions  In some cases I've stated principles as I understand them.  Feel free to better inform me.  In other cases I've posed direct questions and I'd really appreciate professional advice about these issues, or references to places where I can learn more.
Thanks alot,
Chris
What is the absolute minimum resolution that is acceptable when printing up to 44”?
When using the Photoshop Image Size box with the appropriate interpolation setting (Bicubic Smoother) to increase the image size up to the maximum size of your ink jet printer.
What about the idea of increasing your print size in 10% increments? Does this make a real difference?
Resizing with vector-based applications like Genuine Fractals?
In your experience do these work as advertized and do you recommend them for preparing files to print larger than the Epson 9900?
What are the options for creating extremely large digital prints?
Are there web sites or other resources you can point me to to learn more about this?
How do you prepare files for very large-scale digital output?

"What is the absolute minimum resolution that is acceptable when printing up to 44”?"
The Epson 9900 has a nominal resolution of 720 dpi when using the finest detail setting in the driver, and depending on your media, you can actually see over 1440 dpi of real detail on paper. The tests I did with a resolution target and glossy transparent media produced a real world 9-10 line pairs per millimeter. That's impressive for any inkjet printer, but doesn't mean a whole lot when referring to a 44 inch wide print. For prints that size, you're going to be better off with a minimum file resolution of 180 dpi at final print size. You may be able to go down to 150 dpi or so, but you will start to see degradation in quality, and of course, viewing distance has to be taken into account as well, but 180 dpi will look very photographic on a large print.
"When using the Photoshop Image Size box with the appropriate interpolation setting (Bicubic Smoother) to increase the image size up to the maximum size of your ink jet printer."
What I've been doing for years and have seen others recommend also is to use Bicubic Smoother and rez up 200 percent exactly, then sharpen to suit and print. As long as your new resolution is over 180 dpi, you'll be doing fine.
"What about the idea of increasing your print size in 10% increments? Does this make a real difference?"
The ten percent incremental interpolation scheme was just that - a scheme. It never worked better than doing it all in one fell swoop and now that Bicubic Smoother is an option, it really makes no sense.
"Resizing with vector-based applications like Genuine Fractals?"
For 9900 prints, just stick with Photoshop. You won't be able to see any difference in your prints.
"In your experience do these work as advertized and do you recommend them for preparing files to print larger than the Epson 9900?"
See above.
"What are the options for creating extremely large digital prints?"
Do you mean larger than the 9900 can print or are you still referring to this printer? Lightjets can print up to 72"x 120". Chromiras and Lambdas can print 50" wide by however long you want. Epson makes a 64" wide 11880 model. There are any number of grand format printers used for billboards and large format display graphics.

  • HP G85 All in one - Making the printer Wireless preferably with Airprint

I am running XP on an HP towerand connecting the Printer using  a USB - USB cable.  I would like to make this excellent printer wireless to print from my HP laptop.
But also to use it to print from my iPad2 without the hassel of emailing  an iPad document to myself to collect it on the Tower and then print. I believe It would be necessary to make the connection Airprint compatible
I wondered if anyone had solved this problem.

I fully agree with this complaint.  Curiously, I have faced similar problems like him.  Frequently, I have seen the messages like "paper jam ", "Cartridge missing" while there wasn't any paper jam and genuine brand new cartridges were already installed.  My experience is worse than his.  I could hardly use it for more than one week!  What is worse the wireless operation could never be achieved. Now this printer is lying discarded.
It really beats all logic that why should one not be able to scan a document (say -- to save the image on the hard disk for possible future use) even if there was so called paper jam or missing cartridge?
Also, it is virtually impossible to delete any job once you have clicked the button print.  The printer would keep on retaining the job, making the printing of other jobs impossible,  unless perhaps you uninstall it and then re-install!  Why can't HP find a solution to this problem?
I join his sentiments that I would refrain from buying any HP product in future.

  • Is anyone making good prints using Photoshop and 10.6.4?

If you are making good photo quality prints, can you reply with your printer model and your Photoshop version? I'm especially interested in info on making good prints with an Epson printer, which I will be replacing if I can't resolve this.
    Thanks!

I get beautiful prints from Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign on my ancient Canon i9900. I wouldn't own another brand of printer. I've never had a paper jam, never had a clogged print head, and never had a bad cartridge.

  • Too big Printer spooler file

    Hi,
I'm using PrintJob Class to print and I have the problem that the files the program build in the spooler printer are too big ( 2MB/page A4), I think the problem could be in the font that I'm using but I don't know why because I'm using "Courier New". I do:
    PrintJob pg = new PrintJob(...);
    Font fon = new Font("courier new", Font.PLAIN, 12);
    Graphics gra = pg.getGraphics();
    gra.setFont(fon);
    gra.drawString("vvvvvvvvvv",10,10);
    Thanks in advance!!
    Salvador Huertas.

You seem focused on the difference between 33 megabytes binary and a 44 megabytes transfer — the messages have to be encoded as SMTP mail was never intended as a binary transfer mechanism — mail servers transfer printable text messages — and the text-encoded attached binary files are inherently going to be larger than the original files.
You're going to have to raise the mail server limits (which requires administrative access to the mail server), or find an alternate means of transferring the file — mail servers aren't very efficient at large transfers, large files tend to blow out mail server storage quotas, and blow out mail files.   Or chunk up the file into smaller files, send the chunks independently, and then concatenate the file remotely.  (There are tools around to do this — at the command line, have a look at the zipsplit tool — but I'd generally discourage this approach as it adds effort and complexity to the process.)
The usual approach is a file transfer service.   Dropbox or SpiderOak or some other file hosting or file transfer service are the most common approaches here, and are also more efficient than the overhead involved with large attachments sent via a mail server.   Many of these file-hosting services offer more than enough storage here, and often as part of a free service tier.
Some folks can and do run their own file-hosting services, but that generally involves configuring and managing a server system and the associated network connections.

  • Making a printed BANNER using cont. feed banner PAPER

does anyone have any idea if I can make a banner (8/12 x 36") using continous feed paper in my printer? I have the trial verison of Pages '08 which came with my new iMac. (I am a mac newbie) For years I easily made printed banners (using up to 5 sheets of cont. feed paper) using MS Publisher.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have tried Google, and the Apple.com downloads section, but to no avail as yet.
The Canon printer seems terrific and is a step up from an older HP all-in-one machine....however...i miss the easy HP banner printing dialog boxes...(HP sells banner paper that is perforated and made for this purpose as you probably know) and it is just so easy on a PC. I hope to be able to say the same thing about my new Mac soon.
I did try changing the paper size in Pages, FOLLOWING YOUR INSTRUCTIONS TO USE INSPECTOR...but must have done something wrong because I was not able to actually SEE on on my screem (and thus create) an ACTUAL banner for printing.
I will keep trying. Thanks for the suggestions. My banner making days may be on hold for now (others will be more disappointed about this than me!)
    MANY thanks.
If anhyone reading is aware of Banner-Creation software for making actual BANNER PRINTS on an inkjet...please share ! Google searches ususally result in software for WEB-banner creation ..something quite different !

  • Making and Printing a Calendar

Good Morning and thanks for taking the time to read this question and hopefully help me out. I am a relatively new Mac user and love it. I decided I was going to make a Calendar to take over to Australia with us on Jan 1st. But due to time, I am printing it myself. I printed all the calendar photos by selecting page 1, page 2, page 4, page 6 etc.. they turned out awesome. Now I want to print the actual Calendar part on a thicker bond paper, so far I have been unsuccessful. I think it could be the printer settings, but I don't know. I go to print page 3 which is January and it says printer paper error. I have tried so many different selections. I was just hoping to do it this way, as I didn't want the calendar part printed on my nice photo paper. Hope you can help?
    Frustrated in Canada

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you able to print a photo from iPhoto? If not, then a workaround would be to do a Print to PDF and the print each page from Preview.
If you can't print a photo from iPhoto then the issue is deeper than just the calendar. In that case start with the basic fix: close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Making a print calendar from iPhoto

I am using iphoto to make a print calendar.  I chose the "picture calendar" option. After inserting my photos, I noticed that the font size of the month on each page (e.g., January 2015) had become tiny (like 6 pt).  How do I adjust that back to the size on the original template?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem with the font persists. Does it?
If it does try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and check again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Making the print driver quit automatically in Mac OS X?

This is a very minor issue, but one that's been irritating me for a while. Why don't the print driver applications close automatically after finishing a job? Is there a way I can configure them to do this?

Sure. Right click on the Print Driver app in the dock and select "auto close" or whatever it is called.

  • Making Waterproof Prints?

I've really gotten into direct printing of labels on printable DVDs.  Only after printing a few dozen I had to clean the readable side and quickly found out what water-soluble ink means!
I googled the problem and found a couple of foreign retailers of a lacquer that can be sprayed on the printed CD/DVD surface but nothing where I could order with American $$.
Anyone know of a product that sells here inthe USA?

  • BIG Printing Problem...

    Okay guys...
I heard on the forums that if I went throught my libraries folder and found my printer folder... I could delete all the printers that I do not use. Well I use an HP printer... so I proceded to delete all of the other printers... It cleared up about 2.5 G of space so that was a plus. My problem is that now I CANNOT print. I think that I messed up all the printing stuff on my macbook pro. Can this be fixed?
    Thanks

I think you can re-install/update the Printer Software and drivers as an Optional Install from DVD1 (no discs handy to check that)

  • Landscape PDF to print as Landscape without making any print command changes?

    Here is my challenge:
1 - In MS Word, I have created a Landscape document.
2 - In MS Word, I save a Landscape document as a PDF.
3 - In Adobe Reader X, I open the PDF.  It appears as Landscape.
4 - When I print it, it prints out a a Portrait document
I am sending the PDF to users who may not know how to change the print commands.
How do I set the PDF to automatcally print in Landscape?  No interaction required.
I am sorry if this has been covered in another area.  I attempted to find the answer, with no luck.
Thanks in advance for your help!!!

    Pat,
Thanks for your help.  It is appreciated.
Is the "Orientation set to Auto portrait/landscape" a function of the:
    1)  Adobe reader
    2)  The settings on the printer you are using?
Also, I am using Reader X.  I do not know if that is any different in this area than in the Reader XI that you are using.
    Thanks again for your help!!!

  • I need to know which product will allow me to take a photo and enlarge it and segment it to be printed out on standard 8x10 sheet to be pieced together into one big print.

Does photoshop have this function? I need to know before I buy since this is a primary feature I am looking for

Only your local Sony Xperia Support can answer this try and contact them.

  • Making non-printing characters visible

    Hello all,
I am trying to find a method that will make spaces, non-breaking spaces, newlines, tabs, etc have a graphic representataion in rendered text, like the "Show Invisibles" or "Show Codes" features of most word processors. I tried several Google searches but to no avail. Does anyone know if this is possible in Java?

    Hi,
There is no such function in Java as far as I know. You have to simulate it yourself. You can compute the advance, etc. using java.awt.font.LineMetrics.

  • Making Blue Prints!

I have the following stock image that I need to alter colorwise.
I'd like to make the background blue and the lines white. I inverted the colors, but that resulted in a black image with whiteish lines. I've been trying to figure out how to make the black turn blue, but all attempts have ended in failure.

I am thinking: select the white then invert the selection and move to a new layer(ctrl-shift-j)If selection was removed, ctrl click the thumbnail of the new layer, fill with white, ctrl-d to remove selection, select the old layer and fill with blue.
How crisp your lines are will depend on the selection of the lines. Refine edges can help with that.
The reason why the first step was to select the white is due to the multiple shades of blue(or looks like it to me) This will help make sure all blue portions get moved to the new layer.
Anyways as you can see there are more than one way to do just about anything with most software programs. Just take your pick, lol.

  • Import RAW files as lossy compressed DNG

In LR4.2, I would like to be able to import my NEF files as lossy compressed DNGs. That option is not available in preferences, so I have to do the import to DNG, then invoke the "Convert to DNG" in the library menu where I can select lossy compression. Why not make that option available on import so I don't have to perform the second step?

    JimHess wrote:
Do you really want to import compressed DNG files? They are not really raw files anymore, and they are reduced to 8 bits. That doesn't seem to be a good choice for master images. But the choice is yours, of course.
To be clear, the default settings used for 'Copy as DNG' *does* compress raw data, but without loss (i.e. lossless, not lossy).
I know you knew this Jim, but maybe another reader is not so clear...
PS - I really like the new lossy compressed DNG technology - files behave like raw in terms of editing (white-balance, camera-profile, h/s recovery...), but are much smaller. As long as one realizes that the data will suffer loss, and be pared down to 8-bits (which isn't as bad as it sounds, since it does NOT use the same linear encoding scheme as raw data), then it can be a great option during import, if you don't plan on making big prints...
