Making "bootable" disk

Norton's Disk Utility (V8.x) has OS9 and OsX boot images on the disk to boot into either system for their respective disk utilities.
I would like make a "backup" copy of the OS9 version to a separate disk to keep with my OS9 software collection.
I have tried Disk Utility (V10.4.4 on my Dual G4) and a couple of different "cloners" with make bootable option ticked and burnt thru Disk Copy, Toast 6 Titanium and Dragon Burn) to no avail.
I have made "bootable" disks before but can't remember the procedure (getting "old timers", I think :))
Maybe this version of Disk Utility (10.4.4) won't let you do bootable copies?
(Note to above - when formatting HD's with this version of Disk Utility, I did notice that there are no options in formatting/partitioning a disk to load OS9 drivers even though I am running OsX 10.3.9 - all updates)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, I hope you don't use Norton Utilities with OS X. It's incompatible and not supported. NUM can damage your OS X disk.
If you need a duplicate of the OS 9 disc try the following:
Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

No Bootable Disk Error

I have had this computer since August 2012. I have recently been getting a "No bootable disk" error when starting/restarting. I hold down the option key, select the SSD, and it boots normally. The first time it happened I kinda freaked, now it just ****** me off. It is NOT something that should happen on a machine as new and pricey as this thing is.
Anybody else heving this issue?

Try to restart the system while holding down the OPTIONS key. This should allow access to the recovery partition. Select recovery and boot from that partition and use the disk utilities app to see if it can fix any disk error. after that try to reboot normally. If there is still a problem you might try to reinstall the OS fresh - I hope you have been making regular backups of your data with Time Capsule, a back up drive or cloud. These are the first steps I'd take, but then it might be a hardware failure of your drive. Use the Apple Hardware on your install DVD to check the drive. If the drive has failed, you can repace it yorself or take it in for Apple Service. I recently replaced my drive with a Seagate Blue 1TB 5400 RPM drive in my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (5,5) and it works great!

How to make a USB bootable disk to boot up my macbook pro.

Macbook Pro has just fallen and HDD will not boot up.
Start up screen keep bringing up a folder with a question mark in it, and the hard drive keeps making a noise that doesnt sound good.
Need to know how to make a USB bootable disk in order to boot up my macbook and install my new SSD.
Or any other information that could help me.
I was running OS X Yosemite, so would prefer to have this reinstalled onto the boot up disk.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.

Software to create a bootable disk image????

Hi,
I need to create a bootable image. I have a ISO file, and need to create a bootable image to install software onto one of my servers. Is there software out there for a Mac that will allow me to create a bootable image?

Disk Utility doesn't make for bootable images. However, the command-line utility 'hdiutil' does (use it via Terminal.app. I've made bootable Linux DVD images before that way, but never a bootable Mac image.
I'm guessing that a bootable Mac image would involve making a disk image file, copying the necessary system files, blessing the image (in Terminal.app, type 'man bless' for more info), and then converting it to a regular ISO image.
Similarly, I think that all you need to make a bootable USB key/drive is to partition it GPT, copy the system files, and bless it. That said, you can probably use the OS X install media to install the OS on the USB key (it certainly works for USB hard drives) directly. You could even do that, then take an image of the drive (using dd) and convert it to an ISO with hdiutil.

I have been trying to install Win 7 on my MacBook (not sure what year, but it's a Snow Leopard (10.6.8), 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (64-bit), 2 GB memory) and every time I try to install Windows I get the same message. I tried Win XP and Win 7, same thing in the end.
I have successfully created a partition for Windows and when I click "Start Installation", with the DVD with the software inside, the computer reboots and it gives me "No bootable disk - insert boot disk and press any key" every time, with both versions of Windows.
I have searched a lot and I even called Apple Support and Microsof Support, but I don't need to tell you how helpful and time-consuming that was.......
I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
Please, don't be rude, keep it to yourself. I'm not a Mac or MS guru, but I have my way with things.

I figured it out, apparently I haven't burned the .iso file correctly - I have just burned it on a DVD without making the DVD bootable. To not repeat my mistake just open "Disk Utility", drag the .iso (software) file in "Disk Utility", insert a blank DVD, Click Images in the upper left and then click Burn. This way the files are burned on the DVD correctly and are bootable.

I am trying to create a bootable Solaris 7-8 CD that will have the basic file system. What I am would like to have on the disk is the following:
Fsck
Snoop
Mount
Ifconfig
/usr/bin
/etc/
and some others.
Does any one have suggestions on how to do this?
Currently I use makecd.i386 command. I am not sure where this came form. I found it on one of my servers and it was set up to make a 2.5 bootable CD. I would like to know how to upgrade to 7+. Also if anyone knows of any information on this command. I would be willing to use a Linux boot disk if I could find a driver that supports ufs file system.

I am having the same issue. My disk drive will not accept any CDs, music or blank. It doesn't recognize them and ejects them. I have a Power Mac G4 with a combo DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. I have never had problems with this before. Could it be from updating versions to 10.3.9? I'm weary of restoring my computer because if that doesn't solve the problem, I won't be able to reinstall all my extra software (like Adobe photoshop, etc) b/c the disk drive doesn't work and you use it for the installation CDs. Any help would also be appreciated!!!

Ok, so i feel like this is a really stupid question, but can someone tell me how to make a bootable disk in disk utility and the button combination when you start up. I just had to repair my disk and had to go to apple because I couldn't find my disks.

Disk Utility can clone (restore) a bootable disk or an image of one to another disk, making that disk bootable, but it can't build a bootable disk on its own without one of those sources. (Think of it kinda like an office copier: it can make copies of what you feed to it but it can't make originals.)
If instead you mean how can you repair the normal startup disk in your Mac without any of the installer DVD discs or any other already created boot disk of some sort, the answer is you can't. A disk must be unmounted (taken offline) to repair it, & the startup disk (or the disk containing the copy of Disk Utility you are using) can't be taken offline.
For this reason (among others) you should always have your system discs available. If you have lost yours, you can order a replacement set from Apple for a nominal cost.

I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Leopard 10.5.8 using Boot Camp Assistant but when it restarts it says I should insert a bootable disk even though I didn't remove the installer from the drive. What should I do?

More info: I'm using an external CD drive because the built-in one doesn't work for some reason.
Also I went back and deleted the partition (also using Boot Camp Assistant) and just gave up on installing XP, but now every time I turn on my macbook I have to press the Option key to mount the Mac HD. If I don't, it returns to the black screen that says I have to insert the bootable disk and press any key. How do I stop this problem? I've already verified the disk and permissions, plus repaired it. It's still the same.

Go into your system preferences and click the startup disk icon then select your Mac HD.

I'm not crying. Is there a way to install Mountain Lion on a bootable disk on latest iMac cuz mine shipped without an OS?

I could cry right now. After decades of being an Apple fan, something is happening for the worse and issues with every Apple product I own 2 iphones, 2 iMacs, 15" Macbook Pro, and iPad Mini (no issues here, just slow connecting to App Store and can never seem to download updates) has left me disenchanted. I do have a question about Mountain Lion but just airing out grievances.
Ok, to the point. I have the new 27" iMac that was just released. Was delivered and opened the box, turned it on, and there was a flashing folder icon. No OS, wonderful. I live in Brooklyn and not trying to lug a 27" computer onto the train nor should I have to pay for a cab to resolve this. Anyway, I tried to go into Recovery but it started doing an Internet Recovery with a download time of 9 hours. Um, no thanks. So I downloaded the latest version of Mountain Lion from the App store on my old iMac and made a boot disk onto an external via Apples instructions. Plugged it into new iMac lemon, go into recovery mode, see the bootable drive, click on it to reinstall and it gives me a crossed out circle icon and shuts down.
What am I doing wrong? I have pretty decent broadband and did start the internet recovery process now until I find a better solution online. After 5 hours, Internet recovery finished and clicked on Reinstall Mountain Lion to which it's asking me to download the OS again and with a 13 hour download time!!!! What's going on here? What was the purpose of internet recovery taking 5 hours only to download it again at another 13 hours???
Question is, is there something I should be doing differently? Is there a way to install Mountain Lion from a bootable disk? This is mind blowingly the dumbest thing I've encountered with Apple. Got a problem with your OS? No problem, just download a 4.4GB file every incident.

You can't grab a installer from another Mac and expect it to run. The newer Macs have newer hardware which requires special drivers. If the version that boots the iMac is a special build, it won't work any other way than Internet Recovery.
If it was me, I'd take it right back. You have no idea if the OS is just corrupted, the hard drive is dead, or what. I wouldn't take my chances with it.

Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

Time Machine gets stuck on 'Making Backup Disk Available'

This has been happening a few days now. Time machine kicks off a backup but it never gets anywhere. It just keeps spinning and saying 'Making Backup Disk Available'
The log says only:
Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
I tried to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle and although it says it needs to be repaired, when I click repair it quickly says it 'Volume Repair Complete' but then gets stuck on ''Updating Boot Support Partitions for the volume as required'. I left it on all night to see if it would ever finish and it never did.
Where do I go from here?

if disk utility can not repair the sparse bundle you can try repairing it with disk warrior or a similar tool. if that does not work either you need to trash the sparse bundle and start backups from scratch. there isn't anything else you can do.

Any recommendations on external hard drive for making bootable backup?

I wish to make a bootable backup of my MBP before upgrading to Mavericks.
Are there any external hard drives that are better suited for making bootable backups? I use a WD for making Time Machine backups but I have read that WD is not ideal for making a bootable back up - is this correct...?

Question about creating a bootable disk image in Leopard.

I have a Powerbook G4 that originally came with OS9, I upgraded to Tiger and recently upgraded to Leopard. The computer is running great but if it should go down what are my bootable options?
1) Boot from the install disk set then load tiger upgrade then load Leopard upgrade? then reload all my programs back on the G4?
2) Can I create a bootable disk image and save it on an external hard drive and then boot and reload everything at once? ( I guess by asking this question I really don't understand what the full scope of a bootable disk image is?) can someone explain...
Which option is better? I am also running __time machine__... what is the safest and easiest way to use time machine to get my software back together after I get the operating system up and running.

Your best alternative is to create a bootable clone on an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
