Making colors less vibrant

I am using the rgb color mode and want to make some colors less vibrant. In Photoshop I might desaturate with the sponge tool. What are some of the ways I can do this in cs5?'
Thank you.

Desaturating a color means "dirtying" it with its opposite color. In subtractive process (CMYK mode) adding the opposite color grays and darkens the result. In additive process (RGB mode) adding the opposite color grays and lightens the result.
So for example: Suppose the color you want to desaturate in RGB is yellow. If it's fully yellow, that means R and G are maxed out at 255. Adding B will desaturate it, but will also move it toward white, so as it becomes desatuarted, it also becomes tinted. To compensate, reduce R and G together. The result will be a "grayer yellow" or a "yellowish gray." If the "yellowish gray" tends toward greenish, reduce G slightly relative to the R.
Whether you do this in the Color palette sliders, the Edit>Edit Colors>Adjust Color Balance dialog, the Hue, Saturation, and Brightness sliders in Edit>Edit Colors>Recolor Artwork dialog, the Intensity slider of the Edit>Edit Colors>Saturate dialog, or by dragging the marker in the Color Picker leftward, you are doing the same thing.

  • Colors less vibrant in Aperture 3 - Why?

I am using Lion 10.7.2 on an iMac 27" 2.7 Core i5 with the latest version of Aperture 3 as well as Photoshop CS5 -- both programs, as well as my monitor, are set to Adobe RGB (1998). My camera, Sony NEX-3 ARW is also set to shoot in the Adobe RGB (1998) color space. Here's my question:
When exporting a photo from Aperture 3 as a TIFF (8-bit) in Adobe RGB (1998) space and working on the photo in Photoshop, upon importing back into Aperture (saved the file as TIFF, not compressed in PS), the resulting reds are less vibrant. I am seeing this with all colors approaching neon; this is simply one example.
In another scenario, I imported the raw file directly into photoshop first, did my corrections, and then imported the exported TIFF directly into Aperture. The resulting file is again slightly less vibrant, with the most immediate observation noticed in the neon sign. This problem does not exist for Lightroom 3.
    Adobe Photoshop CS5 exported file:
File as appears (and as appears if exported) within Aperture 3, noting the neon is less vibrant:
Why are colors overall less vibrant in Aperture? Is there a configuration issue on my system, or is there a known issue with Aperture? This is not my first time running into color problems with Aperture -- and for my work I need colors to always be spot on.

Technically, you should only need to verify that you have at least the RAW Compatibility Update 3.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1357
Current version is 3.7 which can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1386
Note - I assume that the 3.7 would include 3.6, but am not sure.
If you already have the correct RAW support for OS X and are importing new images into a new or trial library, you might try running the 'Repair Database' option found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Good luck.

Separations, not "seperations".   Just remarkabkle how many pros working with separations all the time can't spell the term right.

  • After making color adjustments, the reference monitors lag behind by about 10 to 15 seconds.

I've tried a new sequence, clearing cache, reinstalling, new project, nothing seems to help. Any advice? This only seems to be happening in one project - the one project I NEED to work on. This is making applying color correction/grading impossible as the colors are not updating in real time, so I have no idea how far to push my grading. This also happens when changing scale, position etc. Running Premiere CC 2014 update.

    Hi,
    Same for me...
I try on a Mpeg2 and h.264 project, even a RED project, on everyone I can play without rendering, but when I ad color grading, curves or sometimes scale adjustement, it makes 10 sec to display the result.
    Somebody has an idea ?

  • Colors Less Saturated when Movie burned to DVD

Colors are quite a bit less saturated on burned DVD in comparison to the way video looked in IDVD. I am burning to Fuji DVD-R at Best Quality. This was my first movie, a test movie of about 5 minutes duration.
    Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Yes, NTSC, and to a lesser degree, PAL, is really, really bad at color fidelity especially when it comes to saturated colors. I'm not sure if iDVD is applying any auto-dimming or not, but it's not surprising that the colors as they appear on your computer monitor pre-conversion are not exactly replicated.
This is one of the reasons that most pros and advanced ameteurs use a video monitor while editing their footage. It gives you a better feel for how the final product will look as opposed to relying upon the computer screen.

  • Help, I just bought my iPod Color less than 2 weeeks ago...

I may not be in the right group, but I just bought a new color iPod less than 2 weeks ago and I see that the new Color iPod with Video is out. Will Apple take back the iPod that I just bought and give me the new one? This is really a major bummer that they would not even hold my order or anything.

This is really a major bummer that they would not even hold my order or anything.
    Sure is.
As long as you didn't open the packet, I don't see any problem. But still, you'd better check this first -> http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespolicies.html#Return%20Policy

  • Colors more vibrant in Editor

I took some shots with my Father's Nikon D90 and noticed they appeaed dull.  I opened them in the editor, and they looked better without any changes.  Why would this be?  Could it be the color profile he had his camera set to?  I know my camera is set to sRGB and his is AdobeRGB.

    Jason,
This is a known bug in the PSE 6/7 Organizer.  It considers photos produced by cameras set to Adobe RGB to be untagged with a color profile.  This causes it to show their colors incorrectly.

  • Making color photos print as grayscale

I am working on a large book with lots of photos. The final book will print 4 spot colors and the photos will be converted to grayscale. I would like to place the original source color photos into InDesign and make them print grayscale, while allowing the other color elements in the document (type, charts, and rules) to print in color.
This would save lots of time doing grayscale conversions, and organizing two sets of photos.
-- My plan is to have the printer do the final grayscale conversions.
Does anyone know anyway to do this?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Dave

When printing from ID, go to Output and change color to Composite Gray.
Edit> didn't see that you wanted other elements to print color. Quite simply you would have to bring the images into ID as grayscale already to achieve this.

  • Does anyone know what to do about the printer (MP280 and Microsoft) making colors weird and fuzzy??

Does anyone else have yellow and blue only in the whole pic? Or pink and purple only? Why?

    Hi ladyswan58,
Please let us know what prints out when you print a Nozzle Check:
    1. Make sure that the power is turned on.
    2. Load a sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in the Rear Tray.
    3. Open the Paper Output Tray gently, and open the Output Tray Extension.
    4. Print the nozzle check pattern.
    (1) Press the  (Maintenance) button repeatedly until A appears.
    (2) Press the Black or Color button.
The nozzle check pattern will be printed.
The nozzle check should look like this:
Also, is the color cartridge a new cartridge?  If not, roughly how many pages have you printed on the current cartridge?

  • Making Cursor less Sensitive

Is there a way to make the cursor less sensitive? For example, if the cursor rest on the application task bar for a few minutes, then one moves the cursor, the entire window moves. Or sometimes one is viewing a web page in tab and the cursor rest on the tab bar for a few minutes, then one moves the cursor, the page opens in a new window.
    It can be annoying.

Thank you Dave and the Ghost for responding. I am using a laptop and based on you guys suggestion I think I have seen the problem. I have drag lock and tap selected.
However, these are features that I deemed to be necessary. I have been using laptops for quite a while, especially the tap feature, from my first laptop the 3400. In fact, that's all I can do on my 3400 since the selector is broken. (I still have it, the screen is great, even got it using wireless to surf the web. It's such a great design icon.)
So I will mark this as resolved and just have to watch how much pressure I apply to the trackpad when I go to move the cursor. I would never have though of this...smile. Now the annoyance is gone. I am sure Apple will add tailoring in the future.

  • Making colors transparent on another path..

Okay, I'm pretty sure there's a name for this, but I don't know it, so I can't look up a tutorial on how to do this.
If I have, for example, this image:
    http://wiki.scribus.net/images/8/8b/Circled2.png
and the bigger blue circle is a SOLID circle, and the white circle is a SOLID white circle, and the white circle is on top of the blue circle, how do I make it so that all of the colors that are "in the way" of the white circle's path get erased? It's kind of hard for me to explain, but after they are "out of the way", the blue circle has a no color section where the white circle was.
It's kind of like taking the path of the white circle, and putting it onto the blue circle, and then erasing everything in the path on the blue circle.
If someone can give any input on this, it'd be great! Thanks in advance.

  • Crop 16x9 into 3x2 (not letterbox) without losing quality

I created a beautiful HVDVD_TS video that does not play on most VCR's.
I want to crop the width off each edge (not letterbox). I was successful in cropping off the edges in QT, but I lost quality (colors less vibrant). What is the best work flow?
In the FC forum, I tried two suggestions but both created an elongated video (16x9 squashed into a 3x2 despite using frame controls):
    1. For the best quality encode, put it through Compressor, select DVD Best Quality 90 mins and turn on Frame Controls in the Inspector. Then import it into DVD Studio Pro.
    2. Encode in Compressor using the SD DVD 16:9 preset.

One could convert the Text to a Smart Object and then apply the Distortion or Warp.
If the result appears pixelated one could open the SO and increase the resolution, which should alleviate the problem somewhat.
Edit: In CS3 the perspectival transformation for SOs is not directly available, but can be simulated with Warp.
A further option would be creating a Layer with a Vector Mask from the Text (Layers – Type – Convert to Shape; best done on a duplicate of the original text layer) and transform that; this would maintain sharp edges at the price of losing text-editability.

  • [SOLVED]How to get colorful output when pipe yaourt's STDIO to less?

    Hello, second post to NC.
My question is how to get a piped(e.g. pipe yaourt's STDOUT to less) program's colorful output on screen without such option like '--color=always'.
Before post this, I've configured less's default behaviour in "~/.zshrc" with following
    less() {
    env LESS=R less "$@"
    And When I run:
    $ dmesg --color=always | less
Everything works fine(I get good, colorful output), but when I run this:
$ yaourt -Qe --date | less
Seems that I can only get grey output on terminal emulator (without 'less' I get colorful output).
Does anyone has idea about getting yaourt's colorful output with 'less' ?

Thanks for reply and after serveral mintues googling & getting some help from IRC:
It seems that there're some utilities that do not provide such a option like 'color=always', what we need to do is trick these utilities into thinking their's STDIO is to a tty, not a pipe.
    1. stdoutisatty way (aur/stdoutisatty-git is needed) from [0]:
$ stdoutisatty yaourt -Qe --date | less
    2. socat way (extra/socat is needed, sometimes doesn't work fine) from [1]:
    $ socat EXEC:"yaourt -Qe --date",pty STDIO | less
    3. script way (sometimes doesn't work fine) from [2]:
$ script -fqc 'yaourt -Qe --date' | less
    4. unbuffer way (extra/expect is needed) from [3]:
$ unbuffer yaourt -Qe --date | less
    5. zpty way (extra/zsh is needed) slightly modified from [4]:
    zmodload zsh/zpty
    autoload colors && colors
    pty() {
    local VERSION=0.2
    if [[ -t 0 && $# -ne 0 && ${1} != '--help' ]];then

    ## when piping function pty to a pager, it may be a good idea to disable ^C *in this function*. assume that you're going to run this command: pty ls -alRi --color | less
    ## and now you enter a pager, and you press the End key by accident, and the pager seems stuck, and to get unstuck you pressed ^C, then the entire function interrupted. so to avoid the interrupt:

  • Photo color shift on import into iPhoto 5.0.3

I imported photos taken in color space Adobe RGB (1998). They were vibrant in the finder and in Photoshop Elements 3.0, but they're faded and lacking in color in iPhoto. When I open them from iPhoto in an external editor (Elements 3.0), they look great. This didn't happen before I upgraded, but the photos I already imported in Adobe RGB (1998) now look dull in iPhoto (but great in Elements). What's going on?

    Mal, I'm using a Nikon D70 as well. Here's what I've found:
-- Take a photo in sRGB and the photo imported to iPhoto looks the same as it does in both Preview and PhotoShop Elements 3.0
-- Take a photo in Adobe RGB and the photo imported to iPhoto looks less vibrant than it does in either Preview or PhotoShop Elements 3.0 (Note: Adobe RGB photos look slightly less vibrant than sRGB photos on screen in any case regardless of the viewer, but the output is supposed to be better)
You're correct: by opening a photo in iPhoto in my external editor (Elements), making a "change" in Elements (e.g., add a layer, delete the layer) and saving the photo, results in an increase in the vibrancy to what it looks like in Preview. So it is a fix...except for 2 things: doing this to every photo will be time consuming and resaving jpgs results in a degradation of the image (okay, probably not so much that I'd notice).
Can you send me the scipt you wrote ([email protected])? I'd really appreciate it!

  • Images shifting colors after initially viewed

I'm new to Lightroom.  After importing RAW files, I double click a thumbnail to open the image up.  Once the image appears, about a second or two later the image changes as if it's automatically toning itself.  I do not have 'Apply auto tone adjustments' selected in my preferences (and have never had it selected from day one).  I shoot in sRGB.
What's the initial color shift that is happening?  The reason I ask is I'll import an image, I think it looks great, but then the color shift occurs usually making the images have less contrast and become less vibrant (specifically in the greens).  I shoot using a Canon 40D.
    Thanks for anyones help.
