Making confidential document restriction

Hi,
We need to create a property for KM document: confidential. Whenever a document is created with this property, it has to be non-editable and cannot be copied for a certain layout set.
We have a admin layout set and a enduser layout set.
For enduser layout set these documents will be only for view. No operation can be made.
How can we achieve this? Do we need any custom Repository service?

Write a custom repository service for this folder and which reads the property "confidential". If the property is set the programatically change all the property of this folder.

Portfolio Document Restriction Trouble

I am using Adobe 9 Pro to create a large PDF portfolio that contains other PDF portfolios. This will be used by many different people using only Adobe reader.
I chose to use PDF portfolios because a video forum put on by Adobe specifically said Adobe reader users would be able to Add Files to portfolios.
But now when i send out the final product to users, they are unable to make any changes to the file.
The Security Method i have is "No Security" and under the Document Restriction Summary, all actions are "Allowed". But the users are telling me, on their screens, it shows many of the actions as "Not Allowed".
Other forums have said one could either "Enable for commenting and analysis in Adobe Reader" under the Comment tab or "Extend Features in Adobe Reader" under the Advanced tab. But, both of these options are greyed out.
I have put a lot of time and work into this, and am trying to meet a deadline, so any advice on how to salvage the situation would be very appreciated!

Different document restrictions in Acrobat and Reader for the same document

When I create a PDF in Acrobat Professional 9 with no security, the document restrictions summary shows comments as allowed and I can add comments in Acrobat Professional, but when the same document is opened in Adobe Reader 7, 8 or 9, the document restrictions summary show comments are not allowed and comments cannot be added.
When I add password security to a document allowing comments, the document properties in Acrobat Prof 9 shows comments are allowed and I can add comments. When the same document is opened in Adobe Reader 7,8 or 9, the document restrictions summary show comments are not allowed and commenting is disabled.
Has anyone come across this issue?

How about "Document Assembly", "Creation of Page Templates", etc?
I am submitting a grant application and they require the document setting is done in the way the reviewers can assemble, change the template, edit, comment on the document.
When I open the document in Acrobat all these are allowed, and when I open the document in Reader they are not allowed. Should I assume that whatever is opened in Reader is always in the setting that these are not allowed? Or is there anything I have to do to change the setting in the "Reader"?

I am mystified why the two lists differ and the document when in use seems to be controlled by the list on the right, which takes away some of the user rights.

This is a document to which I have the source. I have been able to create the pdf with the required set of permissions based on standards. But I am being hassled because I didn't generate it with Adobe Pro! Well, I suppose this must have been a business decision, but its one thats standards contrary and morally low!
Adobe just lost an avid Reader user. I shall circulate my findings within my work and social circles. Thanks to competition and open source, I am sure to find a standards compliant reader without much delay.

Document restriction error.

When trying to send a document to a second person for electronic signature, I get this message - "this document restricts some adobe features to allow for extended features in adobe reader?" what does this mean? I using Adobe Professional 7 and windows 7.

It means that a special "magic" was done to the file. This magic allows Adobe Reader to do certain things that it couldn't otherwise do (e.g. save a PDF). But it automatically locks out many other things.
Not sure why you get this when you send it. If you just attach it to an email, Acrobat isn't involved.

"Document Security" and "Document Restrictions Summary" different

Why is there a mismatch of permissions between 'Document Security' and Document Restrictions Summary'?
I have a pdf file generated with the following security options enabled -- Printing, Commenting (Annotations), fill-in, Content Modification, Assembly. Even though these options show up as enabled in 'Document Security' section of Security tab in Properties (File->Properties->Security->Document Security), they are different to the ones in 'Document Restriction Summary'.
This results in the inability to use highlighting/commenting tools of Adobe Acrobat Reader (ver. 7 and 8).
The pdf file is generated using Open Office 3.0 Writer from a file in a .doc (word) format. I have also tried using tools like 'pdftk' with same results.
According to my interpretation, the 'Document Restrictions Summary' should be in tandem with the 'Document Security'. Am I missing something obvious here? Could anyone kindly clarify how to enable the commenting feature and use it within Acrobat Reader (the free tool)?
Needless to say this will be environment friendly option, which Adobe has been a strong advocate of.

Document Restrictions of Security Policies

I've been hunting around but can't find it. Is there a concise reference for how to use Adobe Acrobat8 Security features with the Adobe Document Center? Is it so new that there's no book (Quick Start, etc.) on it?
I send PDFs to people. But I only want them to be able to print the PDF, not copy any of its content. I also want the PDF to deny access after a 3 month period. I was going to use Pinion Software's AutoShred product, but then I stumbled upon Adobe8 and the Document Center, which seemed like a perfect fit. So I immediately upgraded to Adobe8 and signed up for the trial at the Document Center.
I have created security policies and everything seems to work as its supposed to. However, when I look at any security policy, there is nothing allowing me to make the kind of detailed modifications permitted in Acrobat8 - Secure / Show Security Properties / SecurityTab / and the list for Document Restrictions Summary.
For some reason, when I set up a security policy - most restrictive to only permit printing and eliminate file access after 3 months - the "page extraction: allowed" phrase shows up when I examine Show Security Properties / Security Tab / Document Restrictions Summary, even though for everything else it is "Not allowed" which is what I want.
I thought maybe its a bug, because when I close the file and then reopen it, the page extraction is grayed out. But I don't know if people I send the file to will be able to extract the pages, thus getting around my objective of not allowing them to copy/paste any of my proprietary content onto some other file format.
Anybody else have this same problem. Is there a way for me to prevent page extraction and have it show up in the Document Restrictions Summary as "Page Extraction: Not Allowed"?

Question - is that all you want to do? Or do the documents have value to you such that you want to maintain control over how long they are used, by whom, and for how long?
1. If the former, you can use password protection to protect the documents, and format them so that they cannot be altered.
From within Adobe Acrobat 8 with the document visible.
Select Secure / Password Encrypt / Permissions
Click on Restrict Editing and Printing
Key in a protection password (I use the same for all documents)
Select Printing permissions "High Resolution" from drop down menu
Select Changes Allowed "None" from Drop Down Menu
Make sure "Enable copying of text, images.... box is unchecked
Don't worry about creating Security Envelopes or anything else. Just click cancel if those windows pop up.
Your security changes will not take effect until you save the document. Once saved, you can go to Secure / Show Security Properties / Show Details to confirm that all settings are as you want.
2. If you want to do the latter, you can sign up for Adobe Live Cycle Policy Server protection of the document. Adobe just came out with a new service. Right now its free. Later to be subscription based.

I use this, since I want to maintain control over the documents. I let people print only. No other changes, no copying, no emailing. And the document "self destructs" on the date I set for its expiration.

How do I change Document Restrictions?

I want to protect a PDF file from being copied, altered, and extracted; but I can't figure out how to alter the Document Restrictions. I DO NOT want a password. I'm uploading this document to a public website for public access, but I don't want the content being tampered with.

Sabian, when I save as Certified, I still have to lock it down with a password. I'm sure I've picked up PDFs before that were "open" but prohibited printing or copying... maybe I'm imagining things, though. I'll fiddle around further... thanks for the advice!

We prepare documents that are of critical importance to the organisation. These are stored as pdf files and for now, I set password access to restrict unauthorized persons from opening the documents. However, I also want to set more document restrictions such as disabling copy/paste from document and document printing. How do I do that using Acrobat Pro 9.0?

You can use the 'Password Security' in the security tab of the document properties of Adobe Acrobat.

Thanks for coming to my aid again.
Some of the things I'm scanning are records that need to be good as photocopies because I will have to email them or copy-or-print and snail mail them.
That's interesting about how the PDF file is made. I thought PDF would be a native format and chose it for "compatibility". I'm not sure if everyone have apps that can handle TIFFs (especially on the PC side). My recollection from scanning in the 90s with my Paperport is that TIFFs can print "huge" or "teeny" depending on the settings it was scanned at.
Using your advice scanning with Preview set to B&W as TIFF and PDF and both times the files were smaller. Thank you so much.
I also tried converting the TIFF to PDF in Graphic converter because I can batch convert documents that way. However, I noticed that the printouts of the B&W scans are rather poor quality. On the other hand the B&W scans print out as the whole page and not with a white border like the color scans do.
The B&W pdfs scan slightly smaller than the TIFFs. So that's probably what I will do for these documents.
I will have to search out /experiment with the OCR for things that I can save as text when I get a chance.
I have so much to learn about scanning.

Document restrictions are controlled by the security policy applied to the PDF file (password, certificate or DRM encryption). You can use Adobe Acrobat to apply security, using the Tools Pane > Protection panel > Encrypt button. It's not possible to apply or change security in Adobe Reader.

Adobe Reader XI Document Restrictions Summary

I am attempting to configure Adobe Reader XI for Enterprise Deployment. Our current version of Reader (9.5.1) has the following Document Restriction settings for every document that is opened with Reader:
In version XI, those three options are all set to Allowed. In our environment, it is unacceptable to have these marked as Allowed per requirements.
Can someone please assist me with a method by which we can configure Adobe Reader to mark these settings as Not Allowed for all documents opened with Adobe Reader?

With Adobe Acrobat you can set the security of documents.
