Making copies of RAWs and XMP files of select images into a new folder

I have a group of 120 or so select images from a group of 3000, the selects
three starred and red labeled. Now I would like to make a copy of those
select RAW files and their XMP files and place in a new folder in order to
burn a DVD of just those selects. How do I do this with LR? Export doesn't
seem to offer this option, I can't seem to copy and paste like a typcial
folder operation. I can drag the selects to another existing folder but
then it moves them from their original location.
Any help appreciated.
Windows XP.

Not currently from Within LR. Among other things Drag and Drop out of LR, which give you a copy w/o XMP sidecar on a Mac, is broken for Windows.
You have to do it in Explorer.

  • RAW and XMP files

I searched and found questions regarding exporting files with the attached XMP files. I'm wondering how to import RAW files that have XMP files attached to them. I found a bunch of old image files that are pre-Aperture and iPhoto when I stored everything in my folder system. Can I import the RW files along with my adjustments? Thanks.

Simple answer is I don't believe so, but it'll only take a moment to try one, right?

  • Segregate 3+ star raw and xmp files for cloud backup

    Hi,
I don't think there is a way to do this, but I thought I would ask.  I have  few terabytes of photo's that are cataloged in lightroom.  Only a few hundred gig are photo's that I rated 3-5 stars and are the only ones that I would want to be 100% certain I don't loose in a perfect storm data loss scenario.
I currently use windows 7 import everything into one master folder for my catalog, then sort and rate them all. Is there any way to direct lightroom to separate all photo's with a 3-5 star rating on my actual hard drive into a separate folder or duplicate them into another folder for cloud back-up?  I've tried showing the rating column in window, but it doesn't seem to bring my lightroom star ratings into windows.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thank you for the replies, sorry for the delayed repsonse, I've been in an "Edge Network" area for 2 days.  I am going to check ou the Publish services and see if this will meet my needs.
You are correct that this is simply my "hell in a handbasket" back-up solution.  I have a very robust local backup, that includes raid along with on and offsite versioned back-ups, so this is simply there just in case.  If I lost everything but these photo's I'd still be okay, it's only 20% of so of my catalog so it's more practical to back up 400 or 500 gb though uploads.  Backing up the whole catalog might be an option, but it's a lot of extra time and bandwidth.  Perhaps it will become more practical in the coming months and years.
Having said all of that, I would prefer to simply back-up the 3-5 star photo's in their original folders rather than duplicate them though an export.  I get the impression that the Publish services acts like a real-time dynamic filter that throws the 3-5 star photo's in a separate location that I will tag as a cloud back-up.  If I have to do it that way I will, but it's just more storage and complication.  Still it does provide a solution that I don't currently have.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Bridge CS5 is Corrupting Raw and JPG Files Right Before My Eyes

I am using Bridge CS5 on a Mac to work on Raw files from a Canon camera.  The files all looked good in the cameras review, and looked good when downloaded to the computer then the files started to corrupt and become unusable one at a time as I watched.  They became all white or lines of color.  Not all of them corrupted yhough (about 225 of 1100 did though).  I eventually worked the uncorrupted files and even turned them into JPGs and sent them out.  The next day I pull up the pics in bridge to see if they are still bad.  All of a sudden files I opened and worked on yesterday started to corrupt one after another.  Both the JPG and Raw files are corrupt and unusable even though they worked yesterday.  It only happens when in Bridge.  What is going on?  This is riduculous.
    Terry

Thanks for responding.  What happens is I highlight a large group of files then click on open with Bridge or in Bridge I go to the subdirectory with the files.  All the files are in a filmstrip on the left side of the screen.  All of a sudden the file that I am viewing becomes corrupt (that is it turns into multiple horizontal lines of colors.  Then I can watch as it happens to one file after another.  I would compare it to when you quickly view film strips that were just uploaded and the initial thumbnail is blurry and then slowly all the thumbnails get clear as they process.  But here they appear to already be fine thumbnails but then turn into the files with horizontal lines or sometimes just 30% or so so of the pic is visible and the rest is white or gray.  When I try to open it the file cannot be opened because it is corrupt.  It happens to both the RAW and the JPG file (I shoot in Raw+JPG).  The first day it happened to about 200 of the 1200 files.  So I was able to process the 1000 good ones in Raw convertor and create JPGs with no trouble.  The next day I open all the files in Bridge again to see if the bad ones are good now and files I had already opened and were perfectly fine in RAW converter start to corrupt one after another like the ones did the day before.  So I doubt it is the card or hardware it only happens in Bridge.  Bridge must have the capability to do something to the files.  It isnt making XMF files so thats not it, it is actually corrupting the RAW and JPG files.  Have you ever heard of that.  I found another forum with what sounded like the same issue to someone who had a Canon:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/645620
But this happened to Windows and I use MAC.....but I do use a 7D like them.  I still wonder if Bridge just doesnt work well with Canon 7Ds or something like that.  The above thread never found a solution.  Maybe someone from Adobe has heard of this from others and discovered a reason or solution.  Until then I cant trust Adobe products at all....which really sucks after how much it cost me, but whole shoots lost is worse, I guess.

  • Viewing both RAW and JPEG files in iPhoto

If I use the new Apple SD card reader to download image files from my camera, it is my understanding that by default it brings over both the RAW and JPEG versions of the same images to the iPad Mini (since my camera is taking both types with each image).
Will these then show up as two separate images in iPhoto? The reason I'm asking is because if I have to bring over the RAW files, I want some way of then deleting them off my iPad because they take up to much HD space.
No one I've talked to at Apple seems to know if there's a way to bring over just the JPEG files I want when using the SD card reader, which seems like a huge oversight in functionality to me.
    Thanks, David.

    LarryHN:
    1) your suggestion will not work for the issue I'm describing: if I have both Raw and Jpeg files of the same image on my SD card, the iPad sort of lumps these together, so when I view the contents of my SD card it shows as one image/file, and if I select it and download it, it brings over both the Raw and Jpeg versions of the image, which is what I am trying to avoid and why I started the tread in the first place.
    2) I spoke with sales people at two Apple stores and one person with their online sale, and none of them could addrss my issue. The online sales person said she might have to put me through to their tech people to resolve this or at least get the full, correct info. None of them were janitors.
I did find a workaround which I think will work:
Download the files over to my iPad, then use an app like Photo Manager Pro to be able to view the files by type, then select the Raw files and delete them from my iPad. This will work I hope, but seems like a lot of extra work for a device that's supposed to be user friendly--I think Apple missed the boat on this one, opting for making things 'simple' instead of functional for photographers.

  • Does converting RAW CR2 + XMP convert both of those into the DNG file, or does it just convert the CR2?

This is a stupid question that somehow, after hours of searching, I can't find a definitive answer for:
I have an existing catalog of photos that are stored in .CR2 (Canon RAW) format, plus accompanying XMP sidecar files on the photos I've edited.  If I decide to convert those to DNG, does the conversion process automatically pick up the edits I've done from the XMP files and write those edits into the resulting DNG?  Or does the conversion process just convert the CR2 --> DNG only, ignoring the XMP sidecar file?
Stupid question, but a really important one!
    Bonus question:
Does the conversion process leave the CR2 and XMP files in the folder as they are, and just add the DNG in addition to those?  Or does it delete the source CR2 and XMP files, REPLACING those with the DNG?

    PenaltyShot wrote:
Have you run into any really important / crucial ones to your workflow that don't support DNG?
really important / crucial?, to me? - never.
Don't get me wrong: some people *love* the feeling they get when deleting the original proprietary raws - like they're standing up for a cause or something. If you are such a person, then by all means: knock yourself out, and enjoy - nothing terrible is likely to happen (unless Adobe goes under and/or DNG format falls flat..).
I have discovered a surprisingly large number of cases where some (Adobe-converted) DNGs were not readable, e.g.
    * Bibble
    * CaptureOne
    * DxO
(note: original proprietary raws were fine).
All of which purport support for DNG (and likely read out-of-camera DNGs from supported models just fine).
And if you search the forums you can discover more..
(in case Adobe responds (rare): "it's not our fault - programmers must not have read the spec closely enough..". On the other hand, Adobe is sometimes a year or so tardy when it comes to releasing the new spec - hmm.. - I guess turn-about is fair play (Nikon is sometimes tardy with NEF documentation which supports new cameras, forcing Adobe to work without (reverse-engineer) for the mean time..).
Two other software's that don't support DNG:
    * Canon's DPP (and other Canon software).
    * Nikon's NX2 (and other Nikon software).
If you want to display focus points, proprietary raw is required, period.
Me? If I were to bother to convert raw files to DNG, I would do the opposite of what most people do - instead of archiving the originals and using the DNGs, I'd archive the DNGs and use the originals. That way, I can open my photos in any software I choose, and/or see focus points if I feel like it, but if I get cryogenically frozen for a few decades whilst DNG wins the format war, I'll have the DNGs to use.
To each their own, just realize: DNG is not a standard, yet, and may never be, so you are playing the odds (burning bridges) if you discard originals. Adobe really wants it to be a standard, because it gives them an edge over their competitors (since Adobe controls the spec, and when it's released..), so if you want to help ensure Adobe success in the format war, then by all means: delete your originals.
To be clear: I personally support the DNG format, completely. I just don't convert my existing raws to DNG yet, and generally recommend to others who convert: keep your originals.

  • I have uploaded raw and jpeg files directly from my camera to my iPad (latest version) I have processed them in snapseed and want now to transfer back to my pc for further processing. How can I do this will a flash drive work?

I have processed my raw and jpeg files on my iPad using Snapseed . What format are they saved in on the iPad and how do I transfer them back to my pc where I use photoshop elements. Can I use just an ordinary flaws drive with the USB adaptor? Thanks any help would be appreciated.

The camera connection kit can only be used to import photo/video files form a camera, SD card or USB flash drive. You can't import other types of files. You can't export any type of files using the camera connection kit.

  • Camera raw and DNG files appear as generic icons

Camera raw and DNG files appear as generic icons instead of image previews (Bridge CS5)
    What can I do ?

    Hi Yammer.
First thanks a lot for taking your time to help me. I am really happy about it!
    I will try to answer:
    1)
I meant by having the Camera Raw.8bi placed in BOTH "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5\Plug-Ins" and in C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" the ACR will be found in two versions - or rather in two places (I know the former shouldn't be, but it solved my preview problem).
    2)
YES - I do have tried twice starting the Adobe Bridge holding down the Ctrl-key and ticking the two (the third was greyed out but ticked anyway) and with no help.
    3)
I have tried to do the *.8bi search you suggested, and this gives me the following dump - absolutely with a few more entries than yours. Some are like doubled.
Do you think I can just delete these?
    Kind regards, Jan

  • Moving 20 or more Files in Icon Form to a New Folder

Hey everyone, I've finally gotten around to hitting the forums to inquire about this.
I like to organize many of my folder, file, and desktop files in Icon view and put them together according to their grouping. Once my desktop would get too cluttered I would go through and clean it up by placing it into sub-folders.
This use to be dandy until the time of one of the OS upgrades, I think from Snow Leopard, but it could have been Leopard. Now, whenever I move 21 or more files into a new folder, the first 20 are fine, but everything after the 20th start to be placed into a grid type of mode. [The pictures below will kind of help demonstrate, I've talked to AppleCare where they repeated the conundrum, and suggested these forums]
Anyways, is there some cap or limit I could change either via Terminal or something? Its really annoying having to move and make icons in 20 file increments, so any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

First, I have a question: your profile says you're on Tiger (10.4.x), but you mention Leopard and Snow Leopard - what is the current OS version you are using?
And, before I try to understand and help, I wonder why you appear to be using the desktop as your filing cabinet so to speak? Or do you file your folders elsewhere after the content has been organized? Having that many files on your desktop will slow down your startup - Finder has to open each and every one of those. I created a folder within the Documents folder which has thousands of files and many sub folders in it - it is not on the desktop though; I dragged its' alias to the dock for one click access.
Now, to your issue - did you make sure that you have your view preferences set correctly for all the folders? Even if that is so, I can see that dragging 20 or more folders containing more than 30 GB all at once could result in some glitches. I never use icon view myself (preferring column view) because it would sometimes just not wind up in the order I wanted. So, unless someone can come up with a more definitive idea, I'd say you need to drag fewer folders or try list or column view to see if it works better.

Lines and lines of the stuff. This only happened yesterday. The iPad was working perfectly up to then. I am having no other problems. Google images work fine on my iPhone and my Mac Book. I would be very grateful if somebody could help.

The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu.

    Hello dancetoday07,
Let's see if we can square this away for you. With backing up your iPhone, it will back everything you have using iTunes and if you use iCloud, by default, backs up everything. After you have made a backup you can restore that to put the contents of the backup on your replacement iPhone. If you want to put certain things back on, you will at least need to export the content to your computer, like your photos and videos. If you only want to put certain things back on, then you will need to sync that over with iTunes. All the information you will need are in the articles below.

  • Turning on 'write xmp files' in LR 5.4 changed the modified date on my old raw and jpg files. Can i stop this?

On the advice of an article saying XMP sidecar files are a safer alternative to relying only on the catalog, I recently (June 16, 2014) turned on write XMP files. Now all my JPG and raw files have the same modified date of June 16, 2014, making it impossible to know which are the most recent files, etc.
Is it possible to change this behavior to only create these files for new images - or to stop this behavior?
I'm reverting to a backup of all my files and turning this option o ff for now.
    Thx

I assume your raws are in DNG format? If xmp is in sidecar, it won't change raw file date.
Anyway, saving xmp does not change any dates in Lightroom, so you should still be able to sort by edit time or capture time...
But if you want control, you have to save manually instead of automatically.
    Two things that might help:
    1. Filter based on metadata status.

  • How does LR3 handle virtual copies and xmp files?

    Hi,
I see only 1 xmp file and yet I have several virtual copies of that same photograph... where are the corresponding xmp files? I am using exiftool to place some info in the CR2 files and then need to update the corresponding xmp file...
    Thanks,
    Juan

    Hi Juan,
Virtual copies are only stored in the LR catalog, never in the XMP sidecars. If you update the XMP using exiftool and update the metadata in LR, both the original and the virtual copy will be updated with the XMP data.
