Making digital looking smoke

I love this effect and am trying to recreate it just using Photoshop but I'm not really getting the effect right.
I saw this; http://psd.tutsplus.com/tutorials-effects/creating-a-stunning-digital-smoke-effect/ and was wondering if anyone could help to make this without using illustrator at the beginning?
Many thanks, P

When I have had to create "smoke," I have always gone to Painter (now Corel Painter), and done it on a Layer to bring into PS, where Blending and Opacity are changed.
Alien Skin has a "smoke" plug-in, IIRC, but I have not used it.
Now that PS has added much more control on the Brushes, I'd look into finding a Brush that has some striations in the tip, kind of like a Speedball Steel Brush, or a Japanese Dry Brush. Then, work with grays. That tutorial gives you some shapes to think about and work into the stroke - a pressure sensitive tablet/stylus would be very useful. Set the Opacity to Pressure, and also experiment with Color to Pressure, and change you Color to near white and then darker gray.
Once you have something on your Layer, look at the Blending Modes and also Opacity.
Good luck,
Hunt

    'Best' is a subjective judgement depending on your needs. For brochures you have, for example, InDesign and Apple's Pages.

  • Digital looking clock

    Can anyone tell me how I could have a digital looking clock (hh:mm:ss) in the corner of my applet. I can't find a good java class to do this. I can get the date ok but the time never works right.
    Cheers

    Do you mean the display, or actually getting the current time?
    If you have a problem getting the time, take a look at the java.util.GregorianCalendar class.

  • Auto correct is making me look like an idiot. I have to go back and psychically spell check my documents now. Is there any way to disable it?

    Auto correct on my desktop Mac is making me look like an idiot. After I type it's changing words into other words I never typed and it even pushes words together that I'd typed a space in between in order to create new words that I never typed which make absolutley no sense.
    Now after I type a document I have to go back and psychically spell check my entire document the old fashioned way to make sure auto-correct isn't making me look like a clown who can't spell.
    Is there any way to disable "auto correct" on the desktop MAC and still keep spell check running?
    The amount of messages I've sent out with horribly misspselled words or errrors as a result  is maddening.
    HELP!!!
    Running OSX 10.9.1

    I had turned off auto-correct in the keyboard preferences, but in Mail all my spelling and grammer choices were grayed out.  The key for me — as Kingoftypos points out — was "For Mail, open a new message/reply/forward. Then go to the Edit menu and scroll down to the Spelling/Grammar."
    It would never have occurred to me to open a new message to be able to change the settings.

  • Making Digital Or DV Look LIke Film

    Hi All,
    I was wondering if it is possible in FCS2 to make digital or dv look like film (a movie).
    Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

    Yes.
    But "film" is a completely subjective term.
    If you could be a bit more specific about what you think of when you say "film" we might be able to help you directly. For instance, film can mean grain, contrast, glow, frame rate, motion blur, or screen aspect ratio or any and all of those combined together.
    If you will search the FCP forum for FILM LOOK you will find hundreds of threads that can help you decide which of the many pathways to a particular look'n'feel you want to chase. None of these recipes are simple as they require a stack of filters and each filter has many tweakable settings.
    There are many third party filter packages available to make your video look EXACTLY like it was shot on film. Expensive and very cool. You can google "film look filters for FCP"

  • [Solved] Making mpv look pretty on the terminal again?

    Hey guys, bit of a visual question about making MPVs console output look nice.
    You used to be able to have the console output look like this (botttom left).
    Bummer is the nice looking (aligned) --msgmodule formatting was removed back in december and (I can't find the specific commit) but the msgmodules are no longer colored.
    Is there anyway to make mpv show pretty colored console output again like in the screenshot?

    Ahh, bummer.
    I'm thinking about posting up a issue on the GitHub tracker to find out why it was removed and if there's any chance we can get it back to it's previous form.
    I'd recommend doing so. At the very least, it will become more obvious why it was removed; and, perhaps, something to replace it may come to fruition. I would happily support such an effort if it would not clutter or slow down the project over-all.

  • Duet & firelite drive duet making digital noise

    Hi any know of the solution to this problem? I'm working in logic with project files on Smartdisk external firewire drive. I have a 15" Intel Macbook Pro which has one firewire port. I have the duet and external drive daisy chained. I have tracks frozen in Logic as I adjust paning, or send bus all of a sudden I get distorted audio. any advice would be appreciated. I thought at first it might be because I was using firewire hub, but I've taken that out of the chain and still get the distorted audio after making a few adjustments.

    Hi widnikprod welcome!
    I seem to remember reading about this problem on this forum a while back, don't remember if there were and solutions though.
    I guess do the typical first:
    Make sure you have the latest software/driver updates from apple and apogee, etc.
    But since the hub didn't work, I would look into getting an Express Card 34. This would add a second firewire bus, it would also be handy to have around anyway.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apiotek/EC0002C/
    It's so cheap it's worth a try. Connect each to a separate bus and see if it helps. Not sure which macbook pro model you have, but I think even the earliest models had the express card 34 slot.
    Good luck!

  • How do I add simple text to a photo? For example, if I took a photo of a chalk board and wanted to add a date via Lightroom making it look like it was written on the chalk board, how would I do that?

    I simply need to know how to do this. Everything online talks about doing this as a watermark feature or during Export only. I need to know how to do this during the Develop stage, if it's possible.
    I took a photo of a couple for a pregnancy announcement shoot. We added a chalk board that had the date the birth is to take place written on it, but it didn't show as well when I reviewed the first couple pics. So I erased the chalk board thinking that I could just add the date via Lightroom, but I have been unable to figure it out. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    To create a graphic watermark or identity plate for this purpose with a hand written chalk look you would need Photoshop or Elements to create a transparent PNG file so you might as well do the whole thing in one of those programs to start with.  You can't do this in the develop stage anyway like you requested.

  • A way of making window look transparent

    I'm using the following method to make a window look transparent: whenever a frame is moved, it makes a screenshot of the underliying area and displays it as its background
    but, unfortunately, this doen't work in this example ????
    public class MyFrame extends JFrame implements ComponentListener{
    private Image image;
    public MyFrame(){
    super();
    this.addComponentListener(this);
    public void componentHidden(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentShown(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentResized(ComponentEvent e){}
    public void componentMoved(ComponentEvent e){
    try{
    image = (new Robot()).createScreenCapture(new Rectangle(getX(), getY(), 200, 200));
    repaint();
    }catch(Exception ex){ ex.printStackTrace(); };
    public void paint(Graphics g){
    if(image != null){
    g.drawImage(image, 0, 0, this);

    May it will not help too much, but I know that a transparent window, isn't transparent, in truth.
    What this windows really is doing is a screenshot of desktop background, and printing it at window background. So, I think prefectly normal that problems as your happen somtimes.
    best wishes

  • Need help making this look professional/readable

    What can I do to make this look more professional and obviously more readable.
    I'm new to photoshop and am really trying to make this look so much better so I can put it on my companies website Any help?.

    For readability, select text layer and use layer->layer style->drop shadow
    and put a white border around the letters. Try different size and spread
    e.g.
    distance = 0
    size = 7 px
    spread 100%

  • Making it look pretty - touchup before I create a template....

    Hi,
    I am fairly close on my layout for my website template.   http://test.taffyproductions.com/
    A few things I want to touch up....
    1)  I am having trouble with my <hr/> tag.... I want it to look like the "image gallery" banner which is below it, without the text.  That banner is a .jpg which is the exact width of the website...  am I doing this wrong?
    2)  I want to create some space (4px?) between my list items (restaurants) and the bottom of my maincontent.
    3)  I want my image gallery thumbnails (see photo) to line up against the "image gallery" .jpg above it.... not sure how come this table has a gap at the top.
    Thanks!
    Gary

    1) Perhaps you did not get from my previous message that you need to remove the div tag from around that <br> tag.
    2) #maincontent li {margin-bottom:4px;}
    3) Edit the td that table is in - add vertical-align thusly:
    <td width="180" style="vertical-align: top;">
    And take a look at that old message about how to center the whole thing on the page.

  • Making Page look same in All Pixels & Writing code for Submit Button.

    Hello All,
    How to make the page look the same in all computers even though the pixels are different?
    Please help me in this regard.
    More Over if I want write the code for Submit button where the code should be written.
    Whether the code is different from normal ABAP coding?
    Warm Regards,
    SampathKumar G.

    Hi Sampath,
    You can trigger mandatory field checks in WDA as in R/3. For this you need to make the "state" property of your input field to "required".
    In addition to this you need to call the static method check_mandatory_attr_on_view of class cl_wd_dynamic_tool. This would then automatically verify if all the mandatory fields have been filled or not. It would then populate the error messages into an internal table and display them in the view. Also the mandatory fields which haven't been filled would be highlighted with a red border. You need to put the below coding into the action up on which you want to trigger the data chesks.
    data: lt_msg TYPE cl_wd_dynamic_tool=>t_check_result_message_tab,
              lo_view_controller TYPE REF TO if_wd_view_controller,
              lo_message_manager type ref to if_wd_message_manager.
      lo_view_controller ?= wd_this->wd_get_api( ).
      lo_message_manager = lo_view_controller->get_message_manager( ).
      cl_wd_dynamic_tool=>check_mandatory_attr_on_view(
        EXPORTING
          view_controller = lo_view_controller
          display_messages = abap_true
        IMPORTING
          messages = lt_msg ).

  • Making controlls look the same in all vi's

    I have some VI's written in LabVIEW 5.1 or earlier, and would like to make all of the controlls look like the ones in LV6.1 when I migrate to that version. Is there some tool that would let me do that without recreating all of the front pannels?

    AS I understand your question, after you migrate to V6 you want all the controls in your 5.1 application to have the new 3D look and be consistent....
    There is no tool that automatically goes through all your code and converts one control to another. However, depending on how you developed your code, the process might not be too bad. The key issue is the extent to which you utilized typedefs.
    If you change the look of all you typedefs, the strict ones will change right away to the new look. For the regular typedefs, you'll need to have all the VIs in you application in memory at once.
    Now, open the non-strict typedef and change it to the new 3D controls, and save it as a strict typedef. At this point all the instances will update. Finally reopen the typ
    edef and change it back to a non-strict and save it again.
    Having said all this, the process I outlined above will can take a bunch of memory (and time) depending upon how big your application is... but it will work.
    As far as the nontypedef controls in your application--you're on your own...

  • Making text look beautiful

    Hi. I have created in FCP and Livetype, a great opening animated sequence for a DVD SP project I'm working on.
    At its native dimensions and codec (1024 x 576 PAL Animation) it looks great. But run it through compressor on the MPEG2 for DVD 90min best quality setting and it looks scaggy. Considering it will be the background movie to my main menu screen, it doesn't look good.
    Any advice would be much appreciated.

    I'm not at my FCS machine today, sorry, can't look it up for you at the moment, but I'm sure there's a table of valid frame dimensions in the DVDSP manual or in the online help system.
    Any scaling you do in the MPEG2 encode is going to impact your final image tremendously unless you know how to maximize all of the settings and variables.
    (I pretend none of the adjustments exist.)
