Making External User Library Visible

Hi all,
I just got a new MBP and it came with a User account that I've now put some time into, including copying various things from my old User account. I'm pretty much committed to the new account now, but I realize there are items from my User Library I ought to copy over. I've learned how to make my User Library visible on the new computer, but I can't figure out how to do that on the old one.
I've been accessing the old data from an external backup. Would accessing it from the old computer directly, using Target Disk, work better? Are there any other ways to make the Library visible other than the View Option method?
Thanks for any tips!

Hi all,
I solved my problem so, in case anyone else cares, here's how I did it. I simply booted up from my Carbon Copy Cloner backup of the old computer running on an external drive connected to the new computer.
For whatever reason, the new computer did not recognize the supposedly permanent "Show Library" command I had checked on the cloned old computer, but the old clone did recognize the same "Show Library" command on the new machine. Odd, as they are both running Yosemite. In any case, having booted from the clone, I was able to access my Library data and copy it over to the new machine. Maybe that will help someone some day.
God bless Carbon Copy Cloner!

• Make User Library Visible in Mountain Lion

I would like to make my User Library folder permanently visible since it has much useful information that I consult. Many sources have recommended you insert chflags nohidden ~/Library/ into a Terminal window to make this change. I was able to do this successfull in Lion.
However, in Mountain Lion, Terminal responds with Permission Denied when I do this. Does anyone know what I need to do to make the command work?
Thanks.

As markwmsn pointed out, this may be your case. If you are logged as root, then you are changing root's library flag and not your own. Unless root is the only user you are using on this Mac, I don't see a reason why you should log into the machine as root.
Would this work?
chflags nohidden /Users/username/Library/
where "username" would be the user you are trying to show the library for.
Otherwise, I'm out of ideas. :-(

• Time Machine doesn't see user library backups

Greeting experts,
I updated to Yosemite 10.10.2 yesterday. After restart, the Mac would log me off within a minute of logging on. So I did a clean install (after pram zapping and disk repairing). The iMac (intel) worked normally after the clean install. So I started restoring files (music, photos, etc.).
When I enter Time Machine, I cannot navigate back in time to any previous snapshot (all the date lines are red on the calendar). I've used Finder preferences to make the user library visible on the Macintosh HD but my user library in Time Machine remains hidden. I've read and tried several suggestions in this forum, including using the Terminal to issue commands to make the user library visible, to inherit the backup, etc. but nothing has worked.
I've been able to restore my photographs to iPhoto and music to iTunes simply by dragging the folders from the last Time Machine snapshot prior to upgrading to 10.10.2.
What I REALLY need is to access my user library on Time Machine and grab my Thunderbird files (saved mail, etc.) but I can't find a way to make my user library visible.
Any suggestions are really appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Open Finder and navigate to your User home folder. In the right pane, right click in an open area and click View Options or select View options from the View menu bar. At the bottom of the View Options screen should be a checkbox for Show Library Folder. Check it and your user Library should show up in Finder along with your other Home folders. Then, after opening Library, you should be able to Enter Time Machine and navigate to the point in time you want to browse your user Library

• I desperately need to access my User Library folder in Time Machine (Lion so = not visible).

Hi. I installed Lion a few months ago and got a new external drive to back up Time Machine.
Nobody told me the User Library would be made hidden in the new OS. I have been backing up regularly in the belief that all my work, settings and so on was safe.
Yesterday my iMac (27" 2.8 Ghz Core it with 4 gib memory) suddenly went mad. Message saying finder had quit whilst trying to restore windows. Desktop was flashing, no icons clickable, no external disks readable. Could access some progs and terminal, but nothing else. Could not get into the history folder to trash various plists and so on as the folder is hidden and the alt Go wouldn't work. The Finder just wouldn't do anything.
I have sorted it out BUT I have lost my address book entries, my browser booksmarks, my desktop shortcuts and my iCal entries. I need to access my User Library on my Time Machine. Is there a way?
I cannot believe I have been religiously backing up my stuff but Apple has made it so I can't access my backup of one of the most important folders on my Time Machine???
Is there anyway of getting into this from Terminal or something? I will never be able to get back all the bookmarks and stuff I've been researching for years. I have it backed up on two different hard drives, both of which have 'invisible' library folders. I have make the folder visible now, for future backups, but it's after the horse has bolted. I am furious, and just feel like bursting into tears because of all the time it's going to take me to get all my work back. I can't tell you how stupid this was, Apple.
If someone could help I'd be really grateful. I've got older backups but they are so old they won't get back my recent stuff.
Thanks.

select Finder
hole option key and select Go in the menu
Select Library
Enter Time Machine
You should be seeing all the versions of you Library folder.

• How to make the library visible IN AN EXTERNAL disk?

Hello.
Searched this forum (found about 25 identical questions and answers "how to make the library visible").
I turned mine and it is constantly visible now.
Before installing Lion made a bootable image.
When I connect the external HD, I see it in the Finder side bar, click on users>myname and the library folder doesn't show up.
Tried the 3 ways to make it visible but they all bring back and show the Lion's library on my MBP, not the one in the external HD.
Any ideas?
(BTW, I am just an "amateur user", not too heavy, so just, please take in consideration that if you explain to me slowly I will understand quicly)...
Thanks in advance.
Saul

Thank you Baltwo.
Don't I know you from CCC? (If judging from your answer I do, always hit the nail in the head)...
Yes, I guess I used the wrong terminology. Anyway, I did a bootable disk/image/clone, however it's called, with CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner), which BTW I am using for at least 3 years and saved several times my behind.
So, if I understood you right, you mean booting from my external HD and make the library visible (I don't remember if the clone was made after installing Lion or still while in Snow L, but will check).
I'll try and update here if it worked.
Thanks again and have a good evening.

• Show user library on a Mac OS boot disk running as external drive

I've had an internal Mac OSX Mavericks boot drive start to fail and am in the process of backing up the user data on this drive.
The HDD has been removed from the computer as it wouldn't start up. So far I have been able to mount this drive as an external drive on another mac and I'm in the process of transfering the data to a new drive.
My question is how can I access the User/Library on the failing drive when it's being run as an external drive on another mac?
I tried looking and the view setup for this user folder but there's no option to select 'show library', guess that's because the drive is not running as the normal boot drive!
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Using the Terminal....
Depending on the name of the external drive, select the correct option. Insert your User name for YOU.
Drive name: Mac HD Clone
chflags nohidden /Volumes/Mac\ HD\ Clone/Users/YOU/Library
Drive name 3TB Seagate Clone MTL
chflags nohidden /Volumes/3TB\ Seagate\ Clone\ MTL/Users/YOU/Library
Drive name Mavericks
chflags nohidden /Volumes/Mavericks/Users/YOU/Library

• How external users can upload files in document library hosted in onpremise SharePoint?

Hi all,
We have setup a document library(DL) in SharePoint site hosed on-premise with no direct access from public zone/internet being an intranet solution. We have some external users who need to upload some files that needs to go in this document
library. These files are quite confidential in nature so security is a prime requirement. Following are the couple of options I have in mind:
1. External users upload their file in their designated folder to secure FTP using their own credential set. And also there is a background process (kind of directory watcher) that keep looking at the all the folders
and moves the files to document library
2. We host a single page application which has One time password (OTP) kind of feature. External user comes to the secure site to specify Vendor team name and mobile number. OTP is generated and user is asked to specify the password along with file
they would like to upload. This page also maps the vendor name with respective folder in DL and moves the files to SharePoint there on the fly.
Pls. share your opinion about these approaches. Also welcome your thoughts if there is any other better option.
Thanks.

Hi,
I agree with the Margriet, the first option is simple and safe, the users could not access the document library directly.
For security, it is an importance for users not access the document library directly, it will reduce the risk of the documents in the library.
Thanks,
Jason

• Can't show User/Library in external drive

I can set my Mac to show Library in Users on the main drive (terminal or keystroke) but NOT on an external drive...
How can I access User/Library on external drives?

Check that you’re in the correct folder and entering the exact text posted.
If you’re using the Go to Folder command and providing Library, it’ll open the one in the current folder. If you provide ~/Library/, it’ll always open the one in your home folder.
If you’re using the chflags command, the path will look like /Volumes/volumename/Users/username/Library/ and not /Users/username/Library/.

• How do I get another users Library folder visible?

I'm struggling getting Lion to work properly on one of my Macs. Successful installation on 3 other machines, but this one is driving me nuts. It basically lost my passwords and I've had to create a new account in order to use the machine.
Anyway, at this point I've got one user account setup for myself and I can log in and out with that one. Problem is the other user account on the machine, which is my old one, has all my Library files I'd like to copy to this "new user." This includes, for instance, dozens of Mailboxes I saved "on my Mac" for use in Mail. Rather than have to recreate all those mailboxes, and then find the proper emails to copy to them, I want to simply copy the ones I've already created to my new user Library folder.
I know how to make the Library folder visible, and have done that for my "new" account. But the mailbox folders/files I want are in my old user account and I can't figure out a way to make that Library folder visible since I don't have my old password.
When I try to reset the password for the old account, it refuses to do it.
Is there some way in Terminal to navigate over to the directory where my old, now hidden, Library folder lives and make that one visible?
Thanks,
Howard

Holding the option key is a very crude solution, however...

• Making reports accessible to external users

Hello,
I'm wondering where I can find information of typical BI extranet setups to make webi, xcelsius, crystal reports accessible to external users (vendors). How much effort does this involve? Is the solution to create a website and then using the web services SDK or the BOBJ enterprise SDK - to open/list reports within that website? Where can I find additional info to answer questions such as:
- How is security handled?
- is it recommended to have "vendor" reports reside on a separate server (than the one hosting other BI reports) or should reports reside outside the firewall?
thanks,
Nelly

There are a lot of questions here. I'll try to answer them as best as I can. First, you should look at the [XI R2 Pattern Book for Windows|http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir2/en/Win_pattern_book.pdf].
How much effort does this involve?
Since this is relatively involved, this is a gist what what is needed.
The standard approach is to use a reverse proxy that shields the internal BOE deployment from external users.
Is the solution to create a website and then using the web services SDK or the BOBJ enterprise SDK - to open/list reports within that website?
This is not necessary. You could allow external users to access the same Infoview that your internal users use. The reverse proxy has 2 network cards (and 2 IP addresses, one for external users and one for internal users). This allows it to mask the IP address(es) of internal servers to external clients.
How is security handled?
This really depends on the size of your deployment, budget etc. You could just use security within BO or you could use external software to handle security before the request even reaches BO (TAM for example).
is it recommended to have "vendor" reports reside on a separate server (than the one hosting other BI reports) or should reports reside outside the firewall?
No. A BO deployment can only have one filestore, that must reside within the firewall (as a best practice). Best practices suggest that only the router/gateway is outside the firewall.
A typical (simple) deployment would be:
clients --->internet--->router/gateway--->firewall(outer)----->web server (reverse proxy)-->firewall(inner)--->BOE servers

• How do I open the User Library on a "Firewire" Mac?

I recently replaced my trusty 2008 MacBook Pro with a new one. Not my choice, the video board or some such has tapped out. The new one is working great but I now have to retrieve some old emails. I can use the old Macbook as a "Firewire" drive using a connector I got at the Apple Store. But, as usual, I cannot get into the User Library on the old machine. I have the old boy backed up to Time Machine but I can't get to the User Library there either. I do not need a complete restore as I actually like the clean install of the newbie, but I do need to find these old emails. I have tried to import the email from TM through Mail but it just freezes up.
Amy suggestions? Can the geniuses at the Apple Store retrieve this stuff?
And by the way, why does Apple feel it necessary to hide the User Library when I can go into the System Folder and Library and gum up the works there? What are they protecting me from. Currently I have used a Terminal command that allows me to see my User Library but it won't work on the Mac that is used as an external drive. Unless someone can tell me a Terminal command that would activate that too.
Thank you.

Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN.
B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
~/Library
Press the Go button.

• User Library folder has 112 GB...something must be wrong!

Hello, I have a Macbook Pro with a 250 GB hard drive. It has been running slow so I checked available memory--less than 4 GB. I have 40 GB music, 40 GB photos, and 4 GB movies. Nothing else seems to be taking up much room..then I found that the Users/Library folder was the culprit--112 GB. However, I ordered the folder in the Library by size, and the folder taking up the most memory had less than 7 GB, and most others have less than 1 GB. This is so weird...can't find where the 112 GB is? Has anyone else had this problem?

Do you mean to search for
<~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/.OfflineCache>
via the search box?
No. That's a way of expressing locations (paths) of items in Mac OS X; it comes from its Unix roots. It means, "the hidden folder named '.OfflineCache', located in the folder '[email protected]', which is in the folder 'Mail' in the folder 'Library' in your Home folder". (Of course, wherever I write "[email protected]", you must substitute the actual Gmail account.)
In Finder, empty the Trash, then invoke Go > Go to Folder, or ⌘⇧G. Insert in the 'Go to the folder' field the path
~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/.OfflineCache
(make sure not to make any typos), and click Go. Finder should go there and the previously hidden folder should now be visible and highlighted. Move it to Trash, and restart. Launch Mail again and make sure everything is OK. Mail should re-create the off-line cache and stop making copies of the same message. If everything is fine, you can empty the Trash and continue housekeeping, including removing all those unnecessary copies of the problematic e-mail message.

• Public SharePoint Online Site with External User Portal

Hello Everyone,
My company switched over to Office 365 a few months ago, and now would like to start using our Public SharePoint site to share information (documents
pertaining to their orders/drawings/etc.) with our customers (external users).

I have seen documentation on how to share documents with individual users, but we were looking to do something a little bit different. We would ultimately
like to have a public site with generic company information (like hours, about us,directions etc.) that anyone can see.
We would also like to use SharePoint as almost an "FTP type" service where we could post documents and share them with individual
external
users. HOWEVER, instead of sharing individual documents, we were wondering if there was a way that an external user (that we have granted
access) could sign into the public SharePoint site, and then see information that ONLY pertains to them.
I have been doing some research on this, and I haven't seen that anyone else has tried this. Has anyone had any luck? Or would you have suggestions on how to make
this work? I had originally posted this question on the Office 365 SharePoint forum, and they suggested posting this question here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
did you finally manage to get what you requested here above ? Indeed, I am also struggling to set up the same (public website with individual content sharing with external authentified user).
For external user, I am quite sure that we need to go through MS ID creation (I have created some test users using https://login.live.com).
Our public website is done and (almost) working. I have then created a sub-site for the same, this one to manage permission based on authentified user
But I am stuck when trying to assign a document library with relavant permission.
Would be great to share our feedback and I have searched a lto on the web and did not find any satisfying answer to this design (If there is any... here is my doubt...)
Thanks in advance

• Excel Services Connectivity on Sharepoint 2013 for external user

Currently , external user is able to refresh the data on sharepoint site through browser. the data connection is pointing the one of the external data source. But how can an external user (Internet user which accessing sharepoint through internet) download
a copy of excel in sharepoint library and open the excel workbook with data refresh ability at client machine ?
Do we need client machine to be able to access / ping the external data source?
Thanks.

Thanks for the response.
They want to perform data analysis and design their own report with own template , for example : to remove subtotal from the powerpivot tables which we cannot change the formatting at the excel services at browser level.
So if i understand correctly, we need to get the client machine to be able to access to the database server directly to get the access to the cube for data analysis although we had this odc file connection setup, am i right?
For internal user, network team should open port / access for them to access database server directly.
For external user, either to open public access to the database server directly or setup a VPN connection for the external user to access the database server in their secure network.
Let me know if i understand this correctly.
Thanks.

• SharePoint Online External Users

So I was taking SharePoint online for a test drive a few days ago. While I was looking at how users are given permissions to list and libraries I realize something that might
make or break SP Online for me. The out-of-the-box SharePoint Online implementation gives you one private site collection and one public website. Let just focus on the public website in this example. Now, by default the public website is at least viewable
to everyone. But what if I created a survey on my public website and only wanted members of the site to have access to it. I know that you can "Share Site" with external users. But can you allow visitors to your site the ability to create their own account,
and in turn fill out the survey? And of course without purchasing a license for every person filling the survey.
Jeffrey T McFarland

I'm not sure about making content on your public site private, but you can make content on your private sites public. You basically turn on external users for the entire Office 365 SharePoint Online account. Then you can optionally disable it
for certain site collections. That way, you can control who has access to what. This article might be helpful in explaining how external users works in SharePoint Online:
