Making Filenames Windows Compatible

Does anyone know of a program that will run in OS 10.3.9 that can go through my hard drive and change all windows-invalid characters in the filenames to something else?
The best solution I've found so far is to use a file renamer program that allows find and replace and run it once for every invalid character.

Hi Kris, I use a script that I found on the web a while ago here http://hayne.net/MacDev/Perl/renameforwindows
give it a try. All credit to Cameron for this.

If the site has been optimised for IE (which is non-standards compliant), the best you can try is to spoof IE from Safari.
I'm using an earlier version of Safari than you, so I hope Allan or someone will correct me if the procedure is different.
    First, go to Safari Preferences and enable the developer menu;
Then go to the menu and select User Agent - choose a flavour of IE.
Works about 50% of the time.
It won't work if the site is using Activex controls.

  • If i use a usb flash drive which is both os and windows compatible can i transfer files from my mac to a windows pc using the same usb flash drive?

if i use a usb flash drive which is mac os and windows compatible can i use it to copy files from the mac to a windows machine. i have to do some training abroad and wnat to take the files on a usb from the mac but they will only have a windows operating system available to me.

Generally, it's not the flash drive that makes it compatible, but the formatting used on it.  In Disk Utility on a Mac, the format is called MS-DOS (FAT).  In Windows, I believe it is called FAT32.
A USB flash drive formatted that way should be readable and writable on both Mac OS X and Windows.  But you may want to try a "trial run" before relying on it for the trip.

  • Multiple sheets in one window - Windows compatible application?

Is there a Windows compatible application that can view a spreadsheet saved from Numbers '09 so the sheets all show up in one window? When I export using the various options in Numbers, then try to open in Excel, I get separate sheets.
I need to work on a project with some Windows techs, would love to be able to do in Windows what we do on Mac...gang up multiple sheets in a single window.
    Thanks,
    Don

In Excel you can open multiple windows of the same spreadsheet and thereby have more than one sheet viewable at the same time. For Mac it is the menu item Window/New Window. Then you can arrange them on the screen with Window/Arrange. I do not know the equivalent way to do this in the PC version but I'm sure the feature is there. It is useful for viewing 2-4 sheets at the same time but not much more.

  • What export options in Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Pro should I select to export  HDV video in .MOV files to highest quality Windows-compatible files?

I have some HDV video files imported through iMovie to .MOV files with Apple Intermediate Codec.
I need to convert these to Windows compatible video files of the highest possible ( least loss) quality.  What export options in Final Cut Pro or in Quicktime Pro should I select?  The codex in the converted files must not be Apple Intermediate Codec, for which there is no Windows version.

Okay, I read the whole Flip4Mac website.
Flip4Mac is an application for Apple computers.
Perhaps my question was unclear.  When I posed it I was thinking of asking somebody with an Apple shop to do the conversion for me, and wanted advice on settings for his QUicktime Pro /Final Cut Pro that would produce the highest quality Windows -compatible files.
The Windows version of Quicktime will not play Quicktime files with Apple Intermediate Codec.  You get black screen video, although the audio does come through.
So here's what I need:  I need a Windows application that will transcode Quicktime files in Apple Intermediate Codec, with no loss or very little loss, to WIndows-compatible files.   All Windows, all the time.  Thank you.

  • I need to be windows compatible and I downloaded windows templates but people still don't seem to be able to open my documents, what have you done?

I am new to the mac, and I am trying to get compatible with Windows.  I need to be able to receive and send window items, that i and others can read and work on.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks

I assume most of the documents you need to transfer and edit are MS Office derived.
Well there are several options for you to consider
Use the Apple productivity suite iWork although this will open .doc and .xls allow you to edit and export them again in the same formats some formatting and font issues are common place when transferred between native MS OFFICE programmes and Pages applications.
You can try the fee open office suite or neo office ( a version of the same)
These are more familiar in work flow to MS Office and allow saving to .doc .xls and .rtf  plus .docx and xlsx.
Or you can buy and install MS OFFICE for MAC2011 which includes  a version of Outlook in the full (expensive) package that can be set up with an Exchange server for e-mail and contacts and calendars, and also POWER POINT.
Oh and you can also use the built in Mac text editor to view edit and save as .doc as well.(Its not feature rich ) but it works for simple documents.
If you are using the Mac Mail application to send/receive e-mail with attachments from/to Windows , make sure you have set it to send windows friendly attachment.
To do this open Mail, click on Edit in the Menu bar (Strip at top of screen), scroll down to Attachments and click on the small triangle to the right. In the pop out window click on the Always send windows friendly attachments (A tick should be added to confirm done)
If sending documents to anyone that are to be read only best to print as a .PDF to fix font issues and formatting (these can also be secured with a password).
If you need more complex print editing or image manipulation tools they are also available (at a price) from the likes of Adobe, and design tools such as CAD Vector works/Turbo CAD are also available.
You can also setup complex and secure Windows compatible Networks.
Finally if you absolutely have to view/access some windows specific software for instance a MS Access data base well you could install something like Parallels/Fusion/Virtualbox with a copy of Windows right on your Mac.
Or even use Bootcamp with a copy of Windows (full) on a separate partition.
These days your Mac is very windows compatible.

  • Bootcamp partition not windows compatible!?

Ok.. so i use bootcamp to partition my hard drive and then when i go in to install to the partition, it says its not a windows compatible format! Yes.. i can format the partition to be windows compatible, but then that names the drive "untitled" which shows up on my mac os desktop!
Whats up with this and what should i do?
    Thanks!

In Windows change the property on the disk drive to rename it to something you like.
Vista uses NTFS. And BootCamp Assistant doesn't create an NTFS partition, just FAT for use only with XP.

  • Mail setting for attachments default on 'windows compatible'

I have difficulties sending pictures of iPhoto directly via email button to windows clients. The comment I get is that the files arrive with extension .bin and pictures cannot be opened. I do succeed by exporting as jpg to a folter and then to send via mail as attachment using the button 'make windows compatible'. I find this a long way to proceed.
    Who can help me by:
    A) adjucting my mac so that attachments in mail are default windows compatibel instead using 'that' button which I forget so often.
    B) giving me another/better shortcut so that I can send 'windows compatible' photos via iPhoto's email button.
Your help is much appreciated. Regards from a mac user in Holland.
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

When you send these messages with attachments that fail, are you sending through, or via the Exchange Server?
Many problems associated with Exchange Server originate with improper Rich Text somewhere along the way. In one situation the exchange server alters the file format information, and attachment arrives unreadable.
If you could conduct a test, using Plain Text (plus attachment) only, and without a Signature, it would help us to home in. Even more useful, would be sending a test to me, so I could investigate further. My address can be found by clicking on my name to left of this post, and looking in the bio line of my Profile.

  • Using VisualHub to be Windows Compatible

    Hi guys,
When I am exporting my videos I am exporting as current settings using Quicktime. I also need to make a copy that is windows compatible. At the moment to do this, I am using VisualHub to create an .AVI format. However this is pretty low res, for example a 1.5GB video is being reduced right down to 30MB.
I am using Final Cut 6, and I also have Compressor but have not used it before.
Any help would be great, cheers

    gogiangigo wrote:
Oh yes that works for sure, the OP was asking about a codec to choose as compressor type for AVI.
Not to argue but that's not how I interpret the OP; AVI was just what he thought he maybe needed. The key phrase is "windows compatible."

    Glor,
To add to my earlier post, it is possible to create a data disk readable in Windows using Toast. I'm not sure whether you have the program, but if so, this article contains more information on same.

  • Export thats high res and windows compatible

    Hi Guys,
How do I export from FCP 6 for a windows compatible version of my movie? The settings are currently 1440 x 1080. In the sequence settings window under quicktime video settings, if I change this to H.264 instead of HDV 1080i50, will this work? I don't have a windows to check it on before it goes to client.

Do not alter your sequence settings. Leave the as they are.
On File>Export>Quicktime Movie or File>Export>Using Quicktime Conversion you'll have lots of options.
One of them is indeed h264. Of which in the other post is said that it s supported with windows.
You could export as h264, then rename the clip from Clipname.mov to Clipname.flv
Then flashplayer (installed on most computers) can play it.
If you really want to go to .wmv you'll need [Flip4Mac WMV Studio|http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/wmv-studio.htm] (or Studio Pro or Studio Pro HD)

Hmmm, mine stack up over the pinned icon as you would expect (Win7Pro x64). Is there anything special about the way you're starting up Firefox? Security sandbox? Using any command-line switches?

  • H E L P mac math foonths to windows-compatible fonts

im a novice when it comes to font development. i want to convert mac math fonts to pc-compatible fonts. ive been trying to follow the guidelines on how to do it but i cant seem to have an output. dont know how python works and i dont know if my files are correct. i have "PalatBol, PalatBolIta, Palatino, PalatIta and PalatRom" and some other mac math fonts. so how do i put it in features file, etc. and what is "an outline font" mentioned in the overview? i dont see also the window wen i double-click on the makeotf.py (regarding makeotf.py, mentioned and shown on page 2 of the documentation).
pls help me as i have a deadline to meet.
im pc-based by the way. thank you very much.

If you simply want to convert existing fonts to an equivalent pc version, then the FDK is the wrong tool. OpenType fonts have a lot of new meta-data that older formats do not have, and you will have to spend quite a bit time researching and making choices about how to build the new data. These areas are:
    - extended set of menu names and other text info
    - Unicode encoding tables
    - OpenType layout features: these are very complex for math
    - Panose number and other data for the OS/2 table
You best choice for the specific task of converting is the TypeTool products from FontLab ( see http://www.fontlab.com/html/typetool.html).
You may alo be able to make do with the free conversion tools at:
    http://fondu.sourceforge.net/
These do not cover all the flavors of font data you might want, but if you can figure out how to use them and they cover the cases of interest to you, they will be sufficient.
I recommend the TypeTool , as it comes with a manual and requires relatively little computer and font expertise.
The specific problem you have with the FDK shows that the Python interpreter does not know where to find the FDK add-on modules. This means in turn that you need to run the FinishInstall.py. NOTE! You have to run this as described in the installation instructions: you must run it by dragging it onto the icon for the Python interpreter. If you run it by double-clicking on it, it will make incorrect file-paths.

  • Windows Compatible codec

Other than avi, what codecs can I export from QT (without Flip4Mac or any otherr plugins) to be compatible with Windows Media Player?
File size is not an issue.

Which F4M version is it - the one with presets or the one with custom settings? You might want to check M$ forums as to recommendations as to the mix of bitrate, size, framerate etc. For WMV.
For cheap and simple everyone with windows can use it - use Toast, the make VCD setting makes good MPEG-1's which are ubiquitous in the Windows online video world. And are not too big.
It also outputs DivX with the licenced V6 codec without making a VCD at all or even an image - that may work too. Good encoder and fast.
The DAT files it makes are VCD MPEG-1 files.
