Making Full HD Movies from ACVHD

Ok... just got my iMac so I can do something with the HD movies still in my Sony SR7. I've been reading heaps of threads to learn as much as possible (thanks AppMan and Karsten whose threads are always helpful)... but a couple of questions;
After recording in Full HD and watching the brilliantly sharp and colour full movies directly from the camera, I wish do some editing or at least get them of camera (which is HDD) so I don't lose them. So I have downloaded them into iMovie08 successfully, then;
1. I export to quicktime movie then have read advice to either set the compression type as AIC, H.264 or MPEG-4. I understand H.264 is what the movie will end up as when burning in HD (with Toast) and that AIC is what the movie was imported as (in effect letting toast do the encoding)... but why would you use MPEG-4?...and what is the difference between AIC and MPEG-4
2. If I follow the above exporting procedure, making sure I choose 1920x1080HD, the .mov file saved to my desktop when watched (pre burning) is all fuzzy (or for want of a better describing word, lots of horizontal lines)... although in 1280x720HD there is no lines but much less sharp. So is this because my apple monitor isn't HD and will, upon burning onto a DVD or Blueray disc and playing through a HD TV, the movie be back to full HD? I don't (yet) have a HD TV to test this on, but want to make movies in HD so later I won't have to.
Thanks:)

Have you checked for a firmware update for the camera?
You might have better luck in the iMovie community.

Phil0124:  Sorry, I guess that I may not have communicated clearly initially.  The reason that I asked about the DVD reading capability in the first place is that I would like to be able to watch a movie "stand-alone" (like on an airplane) on my iPad without having an internet connection.  If VUDU is strickly a streaming service that wouldn't satisfy my needs after all.  After looking into the iTunes store offerings, I can see that I can either purchase a movie or rent one from them.  Either way, as I understand it, the content would then reside in a file in the iTunes folder in my computer (if rented, this would just be temporarily) and could be viewed on my computer and/or transferred to my iPad for viewing.  Considering the legal question, isn't there a copy being made and transferred into my possession.  So,what's up with that?
Yes Vudu streams. iTunes does not. If you buy or rent a movie on your computer through the iTunes store, then you are legally entitled to transfer that movie to your digital device as long as that device is under the Same Apple ID used to download it to the computer, and is authorized to view the content. Usually this is the case if your device is synced with iTunes on the computer  This is legal and covered by the terms of use of the iTunes store.
If your rent a movie on your computer you can also transfer it to your iPad but it will be removed from the computer as rentals can only exist in one place at a time. When the rental period expires the movie will be automatically removed from your computer or device, wherever it is when the rental period expires.
If you buy a movie on your iPad these can be transferred to your computer using the Transfer Purchases button on iTunes on your computer while the iPad is connected to it.   Rentals on iPads or other mobile device cannot be transferred and must be watched in the iPad or device that download them.
All of these methods through the iTunes store download the complete movie to the device or computer, so no internet connection is required for watching at a later date.
Rentals have a 30 day life as long as they haven't begun to be watched.  Once the movie has been started then it has a 48 hour expiry period. That is you must finish watching the rented movei within 48 hours of rental as after that it is removed from the device.  You can watch it as many times as you want in that period of time though.

Purchased movies are yours, and never expire. If you delete the movie from your device or computer it can be re-downloaded at no extra cost provided the Movie is still available in the store.

Photoshop/Premiere Elements 13...are either capable of making time lapse movies from still images? I heard this feature was removed from Premiere 13, after I purchased it  =(

It am not understanding clearly what program is not closing
    Photoshop Elements
    or
    Premiere Elements
There is the AdobePremiereElements.exe for Premiere Elements (video editing) and the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe for Photoshop Elements (photo editing).
Right now you keep mentioning Premiere Elements, but I am seeing your description more like Photoshop Elements.
Please clarify so that we can focus on the correct program and try to resolve its problems.

  • Trying to export a full rez movie from Premeire Pro CS4

I've looked aroud the forums and it seems a lot of people are having the same issue, but I haven't seen a fix for this.
Below is a screen shot of the export settings I'm using to try and export a full rez movie (I'm not picky, H264, Qtime TIFF sequence, anything). Notice the image in the preview window. That's what it's supposed to look like, and the preview within Premiere is fine.
Below is the pixelated image I get when rendering with any combination of maxed out settings.
The content of the video is predominantly motion graphics, rendered at D1/DV widescreen settings, prorgessive.
I've tried all the Quicktime settings even with "None" selected in the Codec dropdown as well as the H264 settings you see above.
I'm on a Mac as well.
Can anyone help please? I need to know how to just get an export from Premiere CS4 with all the footage intact and not pixelated.

yeah, youre dealing with a standard ntsc video size export which is 720x480, so its handling your 720x486 source and export the only way it knows how ( sorta scaling internally etc on export )..hence crop..
looks like your original graphics images ( source files -- source graphics images ) are not matching the project size....
in other words it looks like your source graphics were "scaled" to some extent when imported to the project.  that should actually "match" for really good results... the source graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )... the reason is that in the scaling process the editor doesn't do a good job of anti aliasing and so on ( photoshop is better at scaling for example and there are other 3rd party programs that are better for up scaling ( interpolated ) than photoshop..some can be had as plug ins for psd )..
anway, the problem looks to be the scaling....cause ideally your graphics should match the project dimensions ( without scaling )
ps...scaling DOWN is better than scaling UP...with regard the aliasing you see

  • How Can watch full screen movie from my Ipad to my tv ?

Hi...When I am conecting my ipad to tv for watching movie ,which is downloaded from itunes ,I am not able to have full screen in my tv .Can I watch moviw from my ipad to tv in full screen ?

    Sync it to your computer:

You'll need to do that to burn it to a DVD, and a sync via iTunes is probably the most direct method.

  • Making a seamless move from my old mac to my new one

After a stoic last stand with my old laptop against the assailing forces of pauses, freezes, and crashes with iTunes 7.........something. (Well they coulda been bugs but who can tell at this point.) In any case I decided to purchase a shiny new MacBook Pro after 4 yrs of blissful enjoyment and in the intrest of charity donate my old (but still very functioning) PowerBook G4 titanium to my ex-wife. Still i would like to keep my extensive collection of music to myself. Can anyone describe the process of deauthorization and transfer of accounts to my new baby?

On the old Powerbook, start up iTunes and select "deauthorize computer" from the "Store" menu.
Network the two computers together, or transfer your iTunes folder to an external drive and copy it over to the new computer. Place it in your Music folder.
You should be good to go. Enjoy the Macbook - it's a great computer.

  • Full length movies

Okay I am new at this iPod thing. I have held out til now so that I can watch movies on it. So I am thinking about buying this new iPod, but I am not sure it will be worth it unless I know if eventually I will be able to purchase full length movies from iTunes. It seems that they only have movie trailers on iTunes right now. Or is it easy to convert DVD's that I already own to get them to play on the iPod? Since iTunes isn't very clear on this subject... can someone help me out here? It would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer - it is absolutely fantastic. I've bought every ipod since they came out, and almost every bit of mac kit available - and this is, I think, the most impressive yet.
Ripping dvds is very very simple using free software (Handbrake for the mac, though there are PC programs too), though time-wise can be a labour of love if you have a big collection. It is eminently watchable on the ipod screen, or else is perfectly good plugged into a TV.
Lots of excellent posts in this forum tell you how to convert your DVDs.
I love it - it's huge on the WOW factor. Buy one immediately!

  • What is the best way to burn full hd movie to dvd

Hi i need to find the best way to burn full hd movie from panasonic camcorder to dvd thanks

    Hi
    There is NON !
as DVD is as Standard (Whatever program used) - only Interlaced SD-Video Quality
So if You need better then
    • Use Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ + BD-Burner and Disks)
    • or Save out to an USB-Memory stick and play this
What's worse is that iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Can not deliver even DVD-Standard but degrades the quality by discarding every second line in the picture. This happens when going from Eventy's to Project's - Ther is no way around this but to use another program that can deliver as
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
If iMovie 08-11 are only option then do not
    • Share to iDVD - as this also degrades the final DVD - but -
    • Share to Media Browser - and as MEDIUM (or ev. as Large) - NOT HD or other resolution as this too degrades the final DVD due to BAD downscaling in iDVD program.
    My notes on DVD quality:
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)

TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

She must have signed into her own Apple ID on your iPad in order to sync her content from iTunes so try this and see if it works.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. See if your ID is showing in there and if it isn't - tap on her ID, sign out and then sign in with yours.
You should not be syncing to to different iTunes libraries. The iPad can only sync with one iTunes library without erasing the the content on it if you decide to sync to another iTunes library.

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.
