Making hair look a bit more like hair?

I have an illustration of a person and want to make goatee appear a bit more texturized instead of appearing look a simple shape filled with a color. My illustration is not anywhere near photo real, I just want the goatee to seem to have strands of hair, etc.
What are some ways I can do this?
thanks.

Try creating a symbol of a few squirrels of hair, then use the "Scatter" brush to spray a bunch of them in the area of the hair.  You may have to "Expand" the artwork to modify the individual elements.  Check out some of the Illustrator tutorial sites online, use keywords: Illustrator tutorials.

  • Wish Safari was a bit more like Firefox...

I mean when I need to work on bookmarks, can't it open the 'show all bookmarks' window in a page I'm not looking at on the web? Ok, I can do that by holding command down but honest, would it be so hard to have it open up into a new page or tab automatically?
And what about the possibility of breaking the bookmarks flyout into sections like I can do with Firefox...I'm talking about just the ability to put in some dotted lines between bookmark folders that appear in the book marks menu and bar...is there a way to do that that I'm not aware of? This way I can say divide folders with bookmarks for music related links into a section, art related links into another...just a visual divider so the bookmarks menu isn't one long gigantic list of folders...
okokok, maybe i'm asking for too much...forgive this wild charade, i'll try not to let it happen again...
    M

Oh, one other thing...I also wish Safari was more like Firefox in how it handles color...I rarely use Safari these days cause I'm using a wide gamut monitor and having these neon greens and reds all over is quite hard on the eyes...
I've read about how Safari is color managed, I just don't think it works as well as the Firefox has color managed its browser...
I'd love to go back to using Safari a bit more...maybe Mr. Jobs can put a word in for me?...

  • Advice on making a flesh wound look a bit more believable

I want to create a flesh wound on a person's face. I copy the layer, place an image of meat under the duplicate layer and simply erase part of the head to reveal the meat. I then darken the meat layer with the Burn tool. What else can I do to make this look more believable? How can I add a bit of detail around the wound?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    I'd go with C. Pfaffenbichler's sound advice:

  • Make LR a bit more like Bridge!

    I use both apps constantly.
    I love them both.
LR does a few things that Bridge doesnt, (Excellent contact sheet creation with save out to PDFs, Makes blanket adjustments to multiple RAW files without having to open them)
Bridge does lots of thing that LR cant do (Works with CMYK files, makes changes on the finder level over an ethernet network)
I just wish LR's interface was as slick as Bridges.
The variable sized preview is excellent in Bridge. When in the Library mode in LR, the preview is postage stamp sized.
Bridges metadata display is much more elegant than LR's.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to help others, and point out ways to achieve similar results as those found in Bridge, or to point out that observed behavior is NOT what should be occuring, and thus represents an area for LR development to investigate.
What seems to be missing in large part from the discussion is an exploration of the advantages of combining the many benefits of both Bridge and LR into a killer workflow application that is simultaneously powerful, intuitive, and elegant.
One participant correctly observed that Bridge has gone through MANY iterations, and it shows. LR is relatively 'youthful' - and it also shows.
I can see many benefits from a concerted effort on the part of Adobe to truly integrate the new kid on the block fully into the PS family. I can't help believing the result of the effort would exceed the sum of the parts, and address many of the concerns and issues identified within the forum.
My personal take is that until such time as a concerted integration and optiimization effort is undertaken, many of us who depend on these tools will find ourselves having to choose between one or the other for a specific task - manageable, but not the ideal.

  • If only Mail would work a bit more like Outlook...

As a convert this year from Windows to Mac, I am generally very pleased the way Mac's work. However, 99% of my email contacts use PC's 10% of those use AOL. There are well documented problems with sending attachments from Mail to Windows/AOL users - the only way is to zip them. And the only way to get consistency of email message appearance when sending to a PC Outlook/Outlook Express user, is to set Mail to Plain Text. Setting to RTF delivers unreliable results. I just discovered today that adding an attachment to a RTF message converts at least part of the message to plain text. And here's another issue... I have a 20in iMac, if I attempt to set Mail to RTF and the font to say Arial 10pt (I know this is boring PC stuff but bear with me), then the size is too small to use on this screen - but appears at a perfect size on the majority of PC screens in Outlook where the default setting is HTML/Arial/12pt. Conversely - the vast majority of PC users write their emails in 12pt Arial, so they show up as minute messages on my screen.
Is there perhaps a simple solution that I have missed?

Thanks, thought about that, but then two address books - and I'm trying hard to adopt Pages/Numbers. Also Entourage is so bloated with stuff I never use.

  • I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down

I spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard ( more like big drops) and my computer won't turn on but it will still charge.  After i spilled it it kept trying to turn on and off by itself until i finally just shut it down.  Today i tried to turn it back on ( i spilled it last night) and now it won't turn on but when i plug it in the orange light comes on so it still charges.

TBF: You may have been lucky enough not to cripple your MBP immediately with your spill, but a spill such as you describe will have left obvious traces if you ever need to take your machine in for a repair of any kind. And as soon as evidence of the spill is found, any chance of the necessary repairs being performed under warranty will be gone.
Taking the machine in now to be cleaned and have the greasy parts replaced will be expensive, but doing so may save whatever remains of your warranty. For a price, Apple will restore the machine to like-new condition, and at the very least, you will then have a 90-day repair warranty on it. If you have significantly more time than that remaining on your original one-year warranty, and especially if you've bought the extended AppleCare Protection Plan, it would probably be worth taking the machine in to a Genius Bar for a look-over. Ask whether, if you have Apple clean and repair the machine now, your new-computer warranty and AppleCare plan will be reinstated afterward or whether all you'll have is the short repair warranty from now on. If the spill will negate your warranty and AppleCare even if you have Apple clean it, then the cleaning probably isn't worth paying for. But if paying for the cleaning will get your warranty and AppleCare reinstated, it may be worth doing.

  • Making InDesign more like Illustrator

I'm not the only designer that wished InDesign worked more like Illustrator. (I am sure the opposite is true too.)
Are there any Plug-ins for ID that can make it function more like Ill?? (shortcut keys, Tools... etc.)
There are many differences between both applications, yet they do the same thing most of the time. The programmers not want to work together??
Imagine if undo, cut, copy paste were changed to different letters?  wouldn't that drive you NUTS?!
    Plug in 1.
A shortcut tool, A lists of all the shortcut keys, and you can choose, Work like Illustrator/Photoshop/Indesign
    Plug in 2.
Masking (Please this is the worst user experience on a computer going)
I can begin to explain how annoying working with images in ID is, it's nothing like illustrator. a plugin to change this experience would be the best thing to happen to ID since it's inception.
Adobe had a choice when they started ID, make it like Quark, or make it like an Adobe product. They leaned heavily on Quarks usability as that was the industry standard. Why Adobe hasn't made it their own yet, I still don't know.
Can we please move forward and make this Suite work together better please?
    thanks

With regard to masking, I am referring to the interface. The image must always be in a separate bounding box in indesign. This makes resizing or moving much more annoying. changing the size of the image.. the bounding box, is always 100% even if you change that. Meaning you need to go in and select the image, and then go back and select the bounding box. It's just too many steps.
But yes, your point about why isn't ID -> PS -> Ill - ID
which is what I am asking for.
does anyone have a way of making these 3 apps more like the other?
    Copy shortcuts?
    Tools?
I don't care if they are all like ID or PS or ILL... i just want the option to have them all more similar...
Like I say, imagine of Undo Cut Copy Paste were not the same, what would you think?

  • Auto correct is making me look like an idiot. I have to go back and psychically spell check my documents now. Is there any way to disable it?

Auto correct on my desktop Mac is making me look like an idiot. After I type it's changing words into other words I never typed and it even pushes words together that I'd typed a space in between in order to create new words that I never typed which make absolutley no sense.
Now after I type a document I have to go back and psychically spell check my entire document the old fashioned way to make sure auto-correct isn't making me look like a clown who can't spell.
Is there any way to disable "auto correct" on the desktop MAC and still keep spell check running?
The amount of messages I've sent out with horribly misspselled words or errrors as a result  is maddening.
    HELP!!!
    Running OSX 10.9.1

I had turned off auto-correct in the keyboard preferences, but in Mail all my spelling and grammer choices were grayed out.  The key for me — as Kingoftypos points out — was "For Mail, open a new message/reply/forward. Then go to the Edit menu and scroll down to the Spelling/Grammar."
It would never have occurred to me to open a new message to be able to change the settings.
    Thanks, King

There is one, it's called "System Preferences".  And for items like the "Dock", you can use google to find the defaults code (i.e. 2D flat Dock for Mac OS X)
Most (not all) appearance issues can be adjusted to your liking.
With a little work, you'll have your iMac looking like 2005 in no time!

  • Looking for newer Mobo, like the MS-7345 Platinum P-35.

    Hello,
I'm thinking about upgrading my P-35 MS-7345. I really like the MSI brand. I'm going on 5 years, but because of possible GPU issues (like screen ghosting, Non-responding, and timer continues to spin, even when I make a very simple video action, like adding a transition, everything freezes and hangs, to the point of rebooting.
Some people have asked if i updraded Win7 drivers for the MSI boardw hich i'm sure i did. Some asked me to check the board for bad or damaged caps, so I checked both the GPU, and Mobo, but could not see anything.  Then someone told me it could be the Power supply...really?
In looking at Video cards, Like the PNY Quadro 600 ($150.00) requires a PCi-E 2.0x16, which I have now, but the higher end cards like the PNY Quadro 2000, ($400.00) and others, reqiuire a PCI-E 3.0x16.
WISHY WASHY~  Don't know if i should wait to get a new mobo, before I buy a new card, becuz it's going to be a while. I don't want to buy the Q600 DDR3 now, to be obsolete and a non-performer compared to the Q2000 DDR5, which would be more faster, then I wonder, i7, more DDR3 memory, and a new Mobo, then use a slower DDR3?  Ummmmmm.
To be honest, I like MSI, I bought my new MSI Platinum five years ago, and love it!  I'd like to keep it if i could, but technology supercedes practicallity, with the newer atx case with front USB 3.0 (mine is only 2.0....if it's backward compatible, then fine.) I'd like to ahead of the game, but not if i'm going to go BROKE!
With my old build, with the mobo, Intel Quad Q6600,700W Toughpower PSU, memory, hard drives, That set me back about $1200.00.
So..... for someone like me who is not a gamer, does not overclock, wants a minimum of 32GB DDR3, 700W PSU, three SATAII hard drives, does anyone have some Mainboard choices of newer LGA 1155 or 2011 that would either of these work?
This time, I'll need the i7 (or i5) new mobo, new DDR3 memory...up to minimum 16GB, maybe 32GB, and that's that. I'll use what I can,. or give or sell this tower and everything inside to my sister.
I was only looking at these two for specs:
    Z77A-G43 DDR3 1600  LGA 1155 ($ 97.00)  OR
    X79A-GD65 (8D) ATX DDR3 2400 ($ 291.00)
    I know the MS-7345 Platinum is off the production, but is there a board out there that's similar to the MS-7345 P-35?  {it's just easy to set up.}

If you already looked at X79A-GD65 (8D) and you are going for 16GB ram minimum or 32GB a Socket 2011 Core i7 would be a good choice. If you are just looking for an easy to setup system a X79A-GD45-8D would be of the same socket without any flaws but still somewhat less expensive.

  • Are there any intensions by apple to upgrade photos to be more like iPhoto?

I would like to know if Apple has any intensions on updating the Photos app on the iPad or ipad 2, to have a little bit more control for exporting and printing photos that have either been taken by the iPad 2 or that have been imported. A little more specifically, I am looking for a way to have some printing options. Similar to iPhoto on the mac, be able to print to PDF rather than a printer only, or even the ability to print to other formats, like a "contact sheet". These features would be incredibly useful to the corporate world, I believe, so that we are not limited to importing only on the iPad, but the ability to make it work for reporting or documenting purposes.
If this is not in Apples scope of future work, perhaps someone could recommend a third party app or developer that could incorporate these features.
    Thank you

Apple doesn't announce their future intentions here.  These forums are primarily user to user and Apple participation is nil.  It is a violation of the Terms of Use of the forums to discuss future Apple actions.

  • Fonts don't look good in Illustrator like they do in Flash

I have a pretty general question that I've been wondering about for some time now:  for some reason, my text does not look great in Illustrator.  It does not appear smooth and beautifully rendered like it does in flash; instead it looks a bit dull and somewhat pixelated at 100%.  Theoretically, they should both look the same, considering they are both vector-based programs, correct?  Or am I doing something wrong in Illustrator (a viewing setting perhaps) that is preventing my text from looking as smooth as it does in Flash?

Theoretically, they should both look the same, considering they are both vector-based programs, correct?
No. What for? You are confusing preview in AI with the final render for on-screen display in Flash. Think: When you work in a 300dpi doc, is there even a point in trying to get smooth display on a 96dpi computer monitor, when all it means is that in print it wil lagain look different? AI's preview is an approximation transposed to screen space, nothing more. Arguably, it would be possible to antialias it a bit better, but then performance also becomes an issue, and you wouldn't wanna trade interactive feedback for soem smooshed pixels, would you? I certainly wouldn't when even pretty standard illustrations have usually more lines, points and edges than a comparable Flash file. Screen update times could grow exponentially. Likewise, you would not want the AI team to even implement Flash's 7 different antialiasing methods, when 90% of users never would use them and just the opposite, even web designers long for creating better pixel-perfect content without any antialiasing. In addition, this highly optimised code may work on a  web interface at 72dpi, but would go to its knees with 300 dpi and beyond.... It's really two completely different things we are talking about here.
