Making iMovies from unencrypted DVDs to post to YouTube

My dad gave me a DVD of some live performances I have done and I want to post them on YouTube. I figured this would be easy with a Mac, but the process has proved to be extremely time consuming and so I am looking for a better way.
First I followed this Yahoo answer:
Ok, rip the DVD onto your Mac with MacTheRipper(Free)
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/morein...
MTR will convert the DVD into a folder onto your computer. Next, download HandBrake (free) http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/morein...
Open handbrake, locate the "Video TS" folder inside the folder that MTR created. Then, convert it into a quicktime file. From there, open iMovie and drag the QT file into the clips pane. From there, click "Share" up at top and click "Web" so you can upload it into youtube.
I successfully ripped the file using MTR. I then used Handbrake to convert the file, and this may be where I got a little lost. I converted it using the "Normal" presets, and it is an mp4. (Seems to me to be a normal quicktime file.) I then tried to drag it into iMovie, and this seemed like it was going to work - except that a six minute clip was going to take about 400 minutes to import (not even counting the time I'd already spent), so I gave up for the time being.
Basically, I'm asking - surely there is an easier, more time efficient way to make this happen. Am I creating the wrong kind of file? Any answers would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi
DVD to iMovie: Only for legally Yours material (No bought DVDs)
I use one of two methods:
• miniDV tape Camera connected to DVD-player. Copy to tape. Use
• Roxio Toast™ - Can back engineer home made DVDs
Non of these methods violate copy-protected DVDs to my knowledge.

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in

You can do this with a free app called MPEG Streamclip and a $20 quicktime component from Apple.

  • I'm trying to import an imovie back into imovie from a dvd

I'm trying to import a moive into imoves froma advd. The dvd contains an imovie I created. I need it back into the computer

It can't really be done. DVD is a compressed format that doesn't lend itself to further editing. You can possibly use Handbrake or similar tools to convert the DVD to a format that can be re-imported into iMovie. But you will lose picture quality, and there's no way to get back the transitions, subtitles, etc in any editiable form.

  • Can I upload to iMovie from a dvd?

I have numerous home movies in VHS-C format, spanning 1989 to 2000.
Using a Panasonic DVD Recorder (model # DMR-ES30V), I plan to transfer from VHS-C cassette to DVD. Can I then upload from the newly burned DVD to iMovie for editing and storage?
I have previously converted videos from VHS-C to mini-DV using my camcorder as a converter, then uploaded to iMovie from the newly created mini-DV. I would like to save a step, if possible.

Using a DVD will cost you quality, since the footage is highly compressed. It also requires hands-on and a lot of time to "unpack".
Going via miniDV is your best option.

How do I get video from my Canon DVD  camcorder to Imovie?

The second half of this file discusses moving files from an iPod to a computer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Videos are presumably in the "Video" rather than "iTunes" directory; you should be able to just navigate around in that directory for the file you want rather than replacing the entire directory as that article suggests (in which case you'd want to omit the "moving the directory to the desktop" steps, and so forth).

how do you import video to Aperture or imovie from a dvd with a unix executable file?

Allan's suggestion of using the iDisk will work but will fill up the iDisk unless you do housecleaning occasionally. Another, non Apple way would be to upload them to an account on Twango.com. It sort of like MyTube but for photos and videos and is more personal in nature. It's free (monthly uploads are limited to 250MB/mo) and others can easily pop into your public channel (individual sections of a person's account are called channels) and download whatever size you want. You can select the size of your uploads from full sized to 1600, 1024 or 640 pixels max. What I like about the site is that you can email photos to your account. Makes it rather easy. You can also add slideshows and a ticker tape type of display from Twango to web pages (they create the code to use for the channel you select) like this. It's not an Apple thing but I've found it's quick. May or may not be what you're looking for.
    Do you Twango?

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

  • Making Duplicates from DVD not files saved

I have been reading a lot of the discussions and I think I am understanding that after making a DVD from iMovie I can delete all files. I am making movies from stills in iPhoto so I keep the original photos. Can I just duplicate at a later time the DVD for more copies? I do not anticipate making any changes.
I have not deleted anything yet.

Can I just duplicate at a later time the DVD for more copies? I do not anticipate making any changes.
If you are simply wanting to be able to make clones in the future then you can copy one of your finished DVDs using Disc Utility, which has full instructions on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
Therefore keep at least one master backup copy or use Disc Utility to create the disc image and keep it on a hard disc if you have the space.

I use imovie to create videos. When I burn the video to DVD and play it back there is digital breakup in the playback from the DVD. The digital breakup does not show in playback on the computer. I understand there is a file I need to delete and reboot the computer and imovie will rebuild the file in the program. Help!

My method is to use the DAW in standard recording mode, and set up the camcorder entirely separately.  After recording, I automate the audio mix with fader moves and effects, then export ("bounce to disk") a full-fidelity AIFF, 16-bit 48 kHz stereo file (most videos use 48, not 44.1).  I use iMovie '11 to import the video from the camera, then import the stereo audio file and match it up to the camera audio by dragging it into the iMovie Project.  Make the waveforms visible, it's not too hard to align.
Then, use iMovie's "Export as Quicktime" feature.  Here, by going through the menus and options, you can control the audio compression (for example, 256k instead of 128, although 128 seems to be enough for YouTube).
AppleMan1958 posted a YouTube video about controlling iMovie's export options that may help:

Export the slideshow out of iMovie via the File  ➙  Share ➙ File menu option as a 480p Quicktime movie.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.
To disable the feature, install this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

    MPR

When you watch on your Mac, it is at or near HD 1920x1080 pixels (about 2 megapixels), depending on the resolution of your screen. Most photos today are 5 megapixels or greater, depending on your camera, but anything over 2 megapixels must be reduced when put in a video.
When you create a DVD, you must further reduce it to 640x480, standard definition. This is about 0.3 megapixels. iDVD will do this for you.
You can fix by creating an HD movie in iMovie. You can Share this using Share/Export Using QuickTime to an MP4 container using the h.264 codec. You can then put this movie on your PS3 using a USB thumb drive.
That should give you good resolution.
(NEVER MIND, YOU SAID PS2 not PS3, my apologies)

  • How do I make a clip from a finished DVD to post online?

I would like to make a clip (30 seconds??) from a DVD I made. I would like to show the menus and how they navigate to the DVDs content (main movie). I need to post the clip on my website.
Can someone get me going in the right direction?
I know how to make clips of the content but I want to show the menus in the clip also...
    I have iLife 6

I also have this question. Avid lets you change the frame up/down -  to/from a dissolve point. In other words, I could have a dissolve go "up" at, for example, 5 frames, and then "down" at, say, 15 frames. As it stands now, FCPX only allows you the same amount of frames on either side of the cross-dissolve. (A 30-frame dissolve is split 15 frames on either side of the transition.)
Other NLE's give you the option for a dissolve to occur at the BEGINNING, in the MIDDLE (STANDARD CROSS-DISSOLVE) or at the END of a transition. (Depending, of course, on if you have the "handles" to execute the transition,)
Can we achieve this in FCPX? Is this where we launch the "precision editor?"
