Making interactive PDFs...Is prototype not fully functional?

I am a business guy (technically savy) who is interested in creating interative PDFs (primarily navigation).
The mantra of fireworks, design once, export to many is very appealing. But I don't understand why it refers to the final product as a prototype.
question 1) The training videos refer to the final interactive PDF created as a prototype. Why? What makes it a prototype? Why isn't it a fully fuctional interactive PDF that can be made more sophisticated by adding forms, etc. ? If it is a prototype, what program do you use to make it fully functional? Is that InDesign? Is Fireworks merly a strating point, to be finished in InDesign? What is disabled to make it only a prototype?
question 2) This is the same question, but about export to CSS & Images (web site). I realize you can add far more functinality with Dreamweaver, but isn't the export a fully functional (if simple), web sight? What is disabled to make it only a prototype?
Prototype implies to me that it does not produce a useable final product. It has to be made useable or finished by another product.

I think the term "prototype" is being bandied about a bit too liberally <grin>. Here's my viewpoint:
Fireworks can produce finished final artwork for screen. I do this all the time as do many other much more talented Fireworks users.
From a web site and application perspective, Fireworks is a prototyping tool. It doesn't build final web sites for applications; it just builds the graphical shell that other applications (such as DW or FC) can use for building out the final product. As a prototyping tool, you can create very realistic representations of the final product, for client feedback and review and to a degree, user testing. One option for gaining feedback from the client is the PDF export. Combined with Acrobat Pro, you can activate the commenting feature and then this PDF gives you and the client the ability to place feedback right in the PDF just by using Acrobat Reader. In this way it can be a useful tool while designing the site or application, and getting specific feedback from the client within the graphical prototype.
The PDF Export could also be a final product, IMO, depending on it's end use. There is no rollover support, video or audio support from within Fireworks or the export process. Likewise for transitional effects. Interactivity though, using the rectangular slice or hotspot tools, is fully functional. Keep in mind though, that default print resolution in FW is 72 ppi. If you plan on printing out this PDF, you'll want to start with a higher resolution for better printing quality.

Web pages are not fully functional on iPad

Until recently I was enjoying my experience with my iPad 2. I went to Netflix to write a review for a film and was unable to do so. For whatever reason, I am unable to select the desired stars for my rating. While obviously this is not a deal breaker, it is frustrating knowing that some web sites are not fully functional with my iPad. I hope this changes in the future. Cheers.

Here we are over 2 years after the original post and I am having this problem too. Having it in both Safari and Chrome. When I first got my Ipad 3 I was able to rate movies (select star from red to yellow) on the netflix.com website. Somewhere along the line that quit working. Everything else on the site works even radio buttons on page where you select types of movies you watch and how much. At first I thought something on the website changed but then I got a new Ipad 3 at work, low and behold, I was able to rate movies by selecting stars. So what's the difference? Tried deleting history, cookies etc. Removing apps and rebooting. Long story short, I reset my Ipad deleteing all user info and settings and setting up as a new Ipad and it still doesn't work. I can't find any settings on the website itself that affect this. Anyone?

DTR component not fully functional

Hi all,
We recently tried to change the DTR repository properties file, according to SAP NOTE: 1001509.
After performing the process mentioned in this note, we noticed this particular repository.properties file has the wrong content (I downloaded the file from online NWDI - DTR and this caused the file to include HTML Tags and replacing the Key/Value pairings with a different keyset).
This caused the DTR to not fully function; for example we cannot checking any activities anymore. Whenever we try to restart the DTR application in the Web AS, we get a NumberformatException on multiple Key/Values in this repository.properties file.
At this moment, we are not capable of changing this repository.properties file since we cannot checkin activities.
We also tried to replace the repository.properties file on UX, but we now believe (since this file is also version controlled) it is only contained in the NWDI Database.
I've included the error trace DTR pushes out;the current repository.properties file (wrong one) and the correct repository.properties we wish to have in place.
This is a very challenging topic for our teams to solve.
Anybody up for an idea?

The great thing about most BlackBerry phones is their removable battery. Anytime something goes wonky with your phone, doing a battery pull should be your first course of action. When you do a proper battery pull, many unnecessary temporary files get deleted and this helps your phone run smoother and ofter quicker. Don't worry, you won't lose any personal data. Many phones from competing manufacturers don't have this feature so be happy that you can correct many issues using this simple technique.
I can answer your question about voicemails right away. Your carrier's voicemail number should be programmed on the SIM card. To access it, simply press and hold the #1 on your phone for a second or two. That should direct you right to your voicemail box where you'll be prompted to enter your password. If you press and hold the #1 on your keypad and you're not directed to your voicemail box, contact your carrier to obtain the number as well as instructions on how to enter it in your phone.
Try the battery pull and report back with your results. Cheers.

Acrobat 9 (Mac) can't edit this particular interactive pdf. Why not?

I sent a Word doc off to someone to get him to make an interactive pdf form, checkboxes etc. My caveat was that I had to be able to edit the pdf on my Mac with my version of Acrobat (9.0). ...And guess what. I can't edit it.
Everything works as it should, except for the fact that Acrobat doesn't offer me the option of adding or editing fields in the form. I suspect he used a PC and that this might be a factor....
And yet I've had other people help me out with forms in the not too distant past, and they used PCs, and I never had any trouble.
Has anyone had experience with something like this? Is there a workaround for it? I absolutely need to be able to edit this using my computer.

Some possibilities, all of which will prevent the document from being edited in Acrobat:
1. The form was created with LiveCycle Designer. Such PDFs cannot be edited with Acrobat. You can check by selecting: File > Properties > Description > PDF producer
2. The file has some security restrictions set. You can check by selecting: File > Properties > Security
3. The file was Reader-enabled. You can check as with #2 above.

In Design crashes while making interactive pdf

I'm having problems exporting an InDesign file as an interactive .pdf. The file crashes about half way through the document on a specific page number (33). The InDesign file is set up with buttons and bookmarks. I have 4 other files which are different sections of the same document which all export fine. Could this be a problem with the buttons and bookmarks or could it be a problem with the placed image on page 33? Any help gratefully received. Thanks@

Just because it crashes on page 33 doesn't mean that's the problem page, nor does it indicate that if you can export in chunks including page 33 that there isn't a problem page.
There could of course be a problem page before or after page 33, perhaps the way certain frames are threaded, or images across spreads etc.
I'd be inclined to setup a new document with identical master pages (set them up from scratch) - same margins etc.
Then in the problem document choose the Pages Panel select all pages, and go to the fly out menu and choose Move Pages.
You are then given the option to move your pages to the New Document.
Try exporting from the new document.
Just to note - I wouldn't bother tidying anything up before trying the pdf - this is a troubleshooting stage - and if it works from the new document, then do your tidy ups.

Flash not fully functioning in Chrome

When going to a flash page, initial video or flash object will play, but no actions (pause/play/follow link) can be selected. After any click in the flash pane, the mouse pointer will be constantly engaged (i.e. moving the mouse back and forth across the pane will move a video scroll bar right/left, but it will have no effect on the video playback; google maps street view- any click on the map image will allow you to pan but nothing can be selected to advance the view down the street, zoom, etc)
Using Chrome default plugin Flash - Version: 10.3.183.5. Same version in use for IE8 is fully functional.

Are you using relative links to the paths of the media, e.g.: assets/videos/movie1.flv ?
What are you using for FLV playback, the FLVPlayback component itself or are you handling NetStream/Video yourself, or StageVideo?
Default publish settings are never to be trusted in Flash, ever. Paths are RARELY ever saved correctly unless they're relative and even then it's not safe to assume it's correct. I've, long ago, made it a habit of going into publish settings, clicking the browse icon next to SWF/HTML/EXE/etc and manually set the location to publish every single time. If you do that the error should go away about publish destination (and yes, it's really irritating).

Interactive PDF Buttons Navigation Not Working As Expected

Hi all
I am a newby so this may be a very quick fix.
I am contructing an interactive PDF in InDesign CS5.5 v7.5. Essentially basic next page and previous page buttons are jumping ahead and back 2 pages at a time when the exported PDF is viewed in Acrobat v9.4.4 and or Acrobat Pro X v10. The PDF does however only jump 1 page at a time forwards and backwards when viewed in Preview v4.2. I am running this on an Intel Xeon Mac using OSX 10.5.8.
Also I have rollover colour and clicked colour applied to these buttons. These colours show up as expected in both versions of Acrobat but only the clicked colour works in Preview.
You assistance with any advice on this asap would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for your time :-)

I'm trying to make some simple text buttons that are gray when not selected, and white when selected. I've attached a picture of what this looks like when I try to do this with a DVD Studio Pro button in a "normal" (non-layered) menu (note: I did not pick this heinous color scheme).

The gray bleeds through for some reason, and I can't seem to fix this with the grayscale overlay color menu.
Any hints?

Is the trial version not fully functional?

I'm testing PE8 trial - also I'm a complete newbie for video editing and PE8. I assume I export my project to end up with a finished video but PE8 doesn't let me export. It's all grayed out. Is it because it's a trial copy?

Sam,
The trial is fully functional. The ONLY limitation is that the Exported/Shared output will have a watermark banner on it.
Now, the old Export functions (well, most of them) are now grouped under Share. That is why I had to change things to "Export/Share," as it depends on one's version number.
You will find many "export" Presets under the Share tab. Why Adobe even chose "Share" is a mystery to me, but then they did not ask...

Trackpad not fully functioning after Yosemite upgrade

I have a mid-2011 iMac 27". I was running Lion and upgraded to Yosemite. I have 12 gb of RAM and plenty of storage.
Since the upgrade, the trackpad no longer fully functions. It will two finger swipe up and down within a window (although even that has crashed in Firefox and the only way to get the swiping back is to close and reopen Firefox).
No three finger swipes or pinching to get to Launchpad. No four finger swipeups to get to Mission Control. No side to side swiping either.
No pinching to zoom in or out. Nothing...just two finger up/down swipes and single/double taps for left/right mouse functionality.
Keyboard works just fine. I can arrow key all over the place when the trackpad crashes, but that is a pain.
I've tried everything I've read so far.
I've turned off WiFi as I read in one of the threads that was a fix for someone else.
I've removed the trackpad from Bluetooth, turned it off, shut down the Mac and after rebooting then reassociated the trackpad when the Bluetooth prompt comes up. Nope, doesn't work either although others have said that works for them.
I'm frustrated as I swipe all the time and would like to retrieve that functionality. Help!

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

URGENT: Interactive PDF some buttons not working

I am having a big problem with interactive PDFs at the moment, evrything has been working perfectly until this morning it decides to go pear shaped - the day before the PDF is needed at a show tomorrow. I have made many interactive PDFs so I know what I am doing but this time I have tried everything and still not getting it to work.
The document is a 61 page, sectioned PDF with a mixture of buttons - go to destination and also next/previous page.
The next/previous page buttons work fine, but the go to bookmark buttons will not work anymore!
I have re-built all the buttons and bookmarks, but still having this problem. This was all running perfect for the last 2 weeks but now it won't work.
Any ideas?

The problem was the document source name, has to match the document you are using. I was saving 3 x different files for 3 different purposes, and the bookmarks were getting confused.

Mighty Mouse (Bluetooth) NOT Fully Functional

After installing Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), the Might Mouse BT used with a MacBook 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo only functions as a pointer but it cannot select with a click .Battery power is okay. The Mighty Mouse was fully functinal with Mac OS 10.6.8 on the same MacBook.

Replaced the batteries with fully charged rechargable batteries. The Might Mouse and now it is fully functional.
My Theory
Rechargable batteries can be a problem with a Mighty Mouse.
Although the battery level was at 40%, the Mighty Mouse started to loose some of its functionality. If you choose to use rechargable batteries, as I encourage you to do, replace them before the battery level drops below 50%.

PDF with javaScript function from Pro, not fully functional in Reader

Hi,
I followed recommendations to set up a button and apply a javaScript so that when end-user clicks on button, they can upload an image and then save the PDF.
However, in Reader, the file extension drop-down is locked and forces end-user to only have the option of selecting a PDF as their image. I was going for JPG or GIF here at the very least.
Is there anything else I could do, or am I stuck? In Pro, the drop down presents a wide array of file types in which to select from...

Adobe Reader can only insert PDF files as images. Adobe Reader can't convert other files.

Automate the process of making interactive PDFs

We have quite a large number static PDF forms and would like to convert them into interactive form (with text box, radio, form fields, etc...) so our users can fill in the forms. However some of our forms are big e.g. 16 pages with repetitive fields. At the moment we're using Lifecycle designer ES 8.2 to manually put the form fields in, a simple form could take us 1 hour to do.
I was just wondering if there's a way to somehow automate this process so it's less manual, otherwise our wish to become interactive will nearly be impossible.
If not possible with lifecyle, is there another product that could help?

Hi,
Because it sounds like you are placing fields over an existing form layout, it is unlikely that you need 'dynamic' behaviour like fields becoming hidden/visible or creating more instances of objects.
If this is the case then you could use Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro to add fields to the layout.
When you open your existing form layout in Acrobat, go to the Forms menu and click "Start forms wizard". This will examine the layout and make a first stab at placing fields on the layout. So for example, if it comes across a square shape it will place a checkbox. If it sees a series of circles it will places a radio button exclusion group.
You may need to work on the objects, but it would be a good start.
This would be an AcroForm (eg developed solely in Acrobat) and would not involve LC Designer at all. You can script objects for calculations and other behaviour.
LC Designer does not have the same ability to automatically place objects over a layout.

Help With Trial Program Not Fully Functional

I am using a trial of InDesign. I have been watching several of the tutorials and try to mimic them, and the prompts (or at least some of them) just won't work. I go to make changes as the tutorial does...and I can't open many of the functions, can't show two pages side-by side in spite of clicking the prompt to end shuffling. The "clicks" just don't work on some functions. I can add a rectangle with the rec tool, which works, but when I try to add color the scroll of the color bar won't work and if I click on one I can get to, nothing happens...no response. I try to pull one of the pages down so that they are side by side (2 page spread) and no page gets picked up to move??? I have closed and reopened, rebooted...the thing is that the very first time I tried, it did let me do these features. But since I closed it the first time, it just quit working fully? I have chosen the select tool...I have tried everything. I am noticing that my scroll bar works to move things (on my mouse) but the onboard scroll won't, and in many cases I am not able to use my mouse to click an item???
Any ideas? Does Adobe offer any help on a trial?

It's important to tell us what version of ID and your OS, but I'm going to take a shot in the dark and Guess maybe you run Windows 7 or Vista. If that's the case, see InDesign tools and panels don't respond to mouse clicks (Windows 7/Vista)

App Store, Pages 5.0, Evernote, and other Apps will not fully function after installing Mavericks. What is the issue and how can this be solved?

Hello all, I could use some serious help on some major issues I have been having after installing Mavericks on my system (specs stated below). Never has a mac felt ever so rebelious and broken before in my lifelong period of using these systems. Anyway, after installing system 10.9, I had opened the mac App Store upon seeing that applications such as my iWork suite all had free updates. However, when I would attempt to navigate to the updates window, it would not respond to my various attempts. I then tried to get there by the system's menu bar and to my dismay, nothing would work when I clicked on it, not even the apple logo menu. I later quit the application using Command-Q and opened up the App Store by the apple menu option 'Software Update...' instead. Though it looked promising since the updates window did open, all update buttons or even '...more' info buttons were unresponsive. These same problems persisted even after restarting my computer. I had also attempted to see if repairing definitions would help by booting from the recovery start-disk and using disk utility but the repairs it carried out apparently had nothing to do with my issue. Finally, I was able to update to the new iWorks suite (which interestingly did not replace the iWorks '09 suite) by following the notification that asked about allowing automatic updates which I did.
Once trying to use Pages 5.0, I soon noticed that all I could do was merely type in a new document and change various options via key commands. Neither the inspector or top bar menus would respond to any place I click. Similarly, Evernote only starts up on the last used note and merely allows me to scroll through it. The top bar menus, the note select pane, and even clicking inside the note to input text are all not functioning and uninfluenced by any mouse clicks.
I have noticed other apps that will not respond to any sort of input, but I still have not explored all applications to know what the issues of each may be. However there are some applications that work such as Safari, Google Chrome, dolphin, iWork '09 including Pages '09, and others.
I do hope that I can avoid rolling back my system, but in the meantime, it has been quite the obticle course to use my computer for all of my school purposes.

I also forgot to note that this problem also persists with the new iBooks application. I cannot get past the 'Get Started' screen or access the iBooks Store. Again, all top bar menus are unresponsive.
