Making iPad pop up when plugged in

I recently restored my iPad and want to be able to access my pics whenever I plug it into my computer (or just use it as a quick USB drive). I know I can just sync pics with a folder, but I kinda preferred my other method. So how would I go about making it open in Windows Explorer again?

Anybody? Anything?
More history on the ipad. It is an iPad 1 3G/Wifi 64gb. It was given to my Fiancé by her father who bought it new for his practice (he's a dr.) and used it maybe twice. Otherwise it sat in his office drawer.
When plugging it into my MacBook iTunes shows nothing. I've tried getting the lock button to make noise as well as try and unlock it by swiping where the swipe should be on the screen. Nothing.
Any suggestions?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Are there any messages on-screen? If it's not charging that's a pretty good indicator that something's wrong with your cable. Are you using the original cable & bricklet in a wall outlet?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

The "What can I help you with" Box pops up when plugging in a line in cord

I have the retina ipad 4 and when I plug in headphones no problems, but if I plug in a cord that you would use for external speaker sound into the headphone jack the What can I help you box pops up like I pushed the Home button to give it a command. Not sure why it would do that , the ipad funtions fine, just thought I would this out there.

I am a tech for a school district. We have iPads in carts and when they are plugged in they automatically turn on. This keeps them on the wireless when not in use which uses up our wireless ports. Is there a way to keep them from turning on when plugged in?

Yes it is normal. If the iPad battery is below a certain level of charge it is perfectly normal for it to turn on when charging.

No. If the iPad does not turn on, you cannot see the battery indicator.

Album art is not appearing on my iPad but appears when plugged into iTunes.

Having a major issue: I have about 8000 songs accumulated on my iPad Mini 3 with Retina display [running iOS 8.2] from my main computer in a different country. All my album art used to appear and everything was all well and good until I plugged my iPad into my MacBook Pro this morning to charge. While charging, I made one small spelling correction to an album error, at which point my iPad started to sync and then all the album art disappeared from my iPad. When I play the music in iTunes with my iPad connected, the album art appears in the small square at the top but whenever I play it on my iPad, there is no album art.
Is there a fix to this inconvenient issue? I'd appreciate your help!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router.
Restart your mobile device.

IPad 2 discharging when plugged (10W)?

Since using my brand new iPad 2 over the last two weeks or so I have noticed on more than one occasion that using it while plugged into that 10W adapter (220V) will actually result in the battery percent going down.
For example today while using it (Safari, Maps, YouTube) it went from 99% down to 96% while being plugged all the time and, as I write this post on a laptop with the iPad LCD turned off it went back up to 97%.
The only times I have actually "seen" it recharging were when the display was turned off. As a comparison, the iPad 1 that we also use on a daily basis never discharged with plugged in.
This iPad 2 is running 4.3.2 with only WiFi turned on with a three bars reception quality. It does not have 3G. This discharging problem occurs without using any special power hungry applications such as Skype, FaceTime or 3D games.
I have fully turned off and back on the device a couple of times in hopes to "reset" the percent value or to kill potential uneeded backgoung processes but this did not bring any significant progress.
I thought I could use this iPad as a digital photo frame but this continuous discharging makes that use case impossible.
Anyone noticed the same problem?

No, can't say I've experienced the battery discharging while connected to a wall outlet.
Same behavior while connect via USB to your computer, then you may want to take to an Apple store or Apple certified repair provider and have them check it out.

i am looking to have an iOS device automatically be restore from a back when it is plugged into the computer. i have have scripts that update and eject but not restore from a back. automator is too clunky to have it do what i want. any idea?

Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

When plugging in my headset, the sound continues to play on the ipad and not on the heeadset. Why?

If you have used earphones in the past then I assume that you realize it takes a very firm push to insert the headphones into the opening - correct?

It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? Most common culprits include the cable. Try swapping it out for a different one.. or not having the most recent version of itunes. I once even solved this problem by shutting down the computer for 2 minutes. (the longer the better), with the ipad plugged in. starting it up... then itunes recognizes it, launches, and syncs.
Apple has a troubleshooting assistant on this topic:

It will advise you to reboot. I recommend shutting down instead.

P.S The ipad should charge when asleep and plugged into your Mac. The charging behavior is normal. There isn't enough power out the USB ports to charge the ipad while it is on on some older Macs and nearly all PCs.

I had this problem. I held down the power switch to power down completely. Takes a few seconds. Then use the power switch to turn on. Might take a couple goes.
