Making mac book pro original have more horsepower?

hello,
i have a mac book pro original. i have it linked to my hdtv and i have been trying to play 1080p movies with it.
at first i got through half the movie with no lag at all, and then there started to be some lagging problems where i'd have to close the video and reopen etc.
i am pretty sure my laptop is a little too slow for the playback i am assuming, and am wondering what are the best requirements for the specs, and what i can do to upgrade it.
here are my mbp specs currently:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.12f5
as you can see, i have 2.33 GHz...i heard for 1080p playback its recomended to have 3.0 GHz
so would i need to upgrade this? or just the ram or just the memory or everything!?...is there a 3GHz chip i can install?
thanks
-Mikw

hello, thanks for the reply.
thats nice to know that i may not need to upgrade hardware.
i am currently using VLC player for my movies.
i thought using this player may have something to do with the lags, but hey, its a free program.
the video i was playing back in 1080p is a blu-ray file. (m2ts)
i know their is another blu-ray format (mkv...i think..) although the files i have are m2ts, and i dont know if this kind is more complex or harder for a smoother playback. also, the file sizes are usually around 4gig
i notice i can play back 1080p trailers from the apple site with quicktime, although i see how it cant playback blu-ray files in quicktime, which is why im using vlc.
i currently have quicktime pro version 7.5.5 (249.24) by the way.
i have heard of perian for quicktime, but never looked too much into it. i see its free though!
i see that it can play mkv, but has many problems doing it in leopard, also i dont see anything about it playing back m2ts?
yesterday i played a m2ts 1080p movie, and half way through it lagged and i had to restart several times....today, i played the same movie and -didnt skip once!
i feel like skipping or lagging gets invoked when i pause it alot, or rewind to an earlier section in the movie and play from there...if i just play it straight through, without touching it once, i feel theres a better chance it will avoid lag. this is where my idea of upping the memory came it...maybe 4gig of ram will help with this?
if its true i don't need to update hardware, im assuming VLC may be what the lag problem is.
i like quicktime alot more and would download perain if it indeed can play m2ts.
hopefully its the video players and not the hardware thats the problem!! whats your input?
thanks so much
-Mike

I have a mac book pro and have already downloaded adobe flash player. However when i go to watch a video it says "Blocked Plug In". But my adobe is already up to date. Can someone help me to fix this so i can watch videos?

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 7. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
You might have to log out or reboot before a Flash update takes effect.
    Step 2
In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.
    Step 3
If you're only having trouble with YouTube videos, log in to YouTube and load this page. You may see a link with the text "Leave the HTML5 Trial." If so, click that link.
    Step 4
If you get a warning of a "blocked" or "outdated" plug-in, then from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch the browser.
If the warning persists, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside it, there should be a file named "XProtect.meta.plist". If that file is missing and you know why it's missing, restore it from a backup or copy it from another Mac running the same version of OS X. Otherwise, reinstall OS X.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
Open this folder as in Step 4:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
    Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
    Step 6
Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from the domain "get.adobe.com". Don't click a link from any other website, including this one, because you can't trust links. They may be an attempt to trick you into installing malware masquerading as Flash. Type the address into the browser window. Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    Step 7
If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked
    Allow (or Enable) plug-ins
    Then click the button marked
    Manage Website Settings...
if present and make sure that the website is not blocked for Flash.
    Step 8
    Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.

  • Word 2011 for Mac Book pro - I have found that my cursor disappears sometimes when I click on a toolbar function. I found out it is a bug, that the Mac loses 'focus'. I can correct it temporarily by clicking on Format - Font - Cancel. Any info?

I have Word 2011 on a Mac Book Pro and have had problems with a dissapearing cursor - it makes editing tricky
After googling it I found out that there is a bug where the Mac loses focus if you click away from the document - it also does this with italics according to other users.
I had a play with it and found out that when I click on the toolbar in a document where this happens, the cursor disappears, e.g. changing font colour etc. And then, when I click on Format - Font - Cancel it returns
I'd be interested if anyone else has a comment to add, please do
    thanks

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

After updating to Mavericks on my Mac Book Pro I have 3 user accounts, all me and all admins. I have gone to system preferences>users & groups and tried to select the users I want to delete and press - to get rid of them, but it wont even let me click on them or select them in any way.

Are you trying to install a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 8?
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp.
You can get more info on BootCamp here:

  • On my Mac Book Pro I have 18 groups of contact. When I synchronize, on my iPod touch I have 7 groups?

On my Mac Book Pro I have 18 groups of contact. When I synchronize, on my iPod touch I have 7 groups?
    Why? How to correct?

As I hinted.. dropouts of wireless are not unusual at all on the AC model.. and AFAIK there is not much in the way of a fix.
The ipad might be using 2.4ghz which will work better than 5ghz.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.
Give it all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Including a different name for the 5ghz band. I want to try and force bands to see if it is only 5ghz giving trouble.
Then set channels for the 2.4ghz.. try in turn, 11, 6, 1 in that order.
Setting bands for 5ghz does nothing apparently..
Join the MBP to the 2.4ghz and see if it suffers the same problems.. if so that is not it..
Then I think you might need to check the MBP as it might have issues.. did you upgrade install Mavericks? Did the issue exist before mavericks if you did upgrade?

  • HT1338 anyone know what causes the mac book pro to have slow startup ?

takes a longtime for my mac book pro to start up any ideas ? already tried clearing cookies and basics

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. It can be replaced if necessary, but a backup strategy is recommended whether or not you are experiencing problems.
Read: OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly. The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the link there is broken, so use this one: Disk Utility. To do this you must start your Mac from the Recovery System or Internet Recovery.
Rather than ask a dozen questions for more details about your system consider the following:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply. Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • I bought 2 mac book pros and have time capsule connected to router. Both computers can see time capsule but i can not see other computers.

I bought 2 mac book pros. At home i already had a network with a timecapsule connected to a router and a windows xp lap top connected to it. When i turned both macs on i was able to see the time capsule and the windows xp computer HOWEVER neither mac could see each other......any help would be appreciated.
    Nick

Thanks Linc ......you were right on the money. Your help has been awsome. I spent 3 hours last night doing stuff with out any solutions. May I ask you another question if you have the time and patience please. My orriginal setup was 2 windows laptops with XP on them connected with a timecapsule attached to a router. Hence the time capsule made a wireless signal aswell as being an external hard drive. On one of the laptops i have a printer attached to it which was shared so that the other computer could print documents through the network however the computer attached to the printer has to be on. Do you know what i have to do so these new 2 mac book pros can print to that printer? Thanks again for all your previous help. Nick

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you reach the third set of steps, insert a Mac OS X install disk.

  • Mac book Pro might have a virus please read and help

Hi guys Ive had my mac book pro for 3 years. Recently i keep getting pop ups from strange sites but primarily mac keeper. i haven't downloaded anything but my sister was watching a movie online a couple of days ago and I think thats were it came from. So firstly every time i go to my Safari Preferences and change my homepage, i close everything, and when i open it I'm brought to the same page which is something called only-search.com. Its ALWAYS my home page no matter how i try to change it. Another thing is that when i type in a search, the little text on the right says google search but when i actually search for it, it always goes to a yahoo search. The popups seem to come randomly when I click on websites. They open new tabs and promote their crap. Please help!

    Download Adwaremedic:

  • I have an almost 3 yr old Mac Book Pro and have noticed the colorwheel pop up more and more to process anything applications I use or websites I browse.  Do I need to add more RAM? Is it possible to add more RAM?

I have an almost 3 yr olf MacBook Pro and have noticed that my color wheel pops up more and more. I can't open a simple document sometimes w/o it popping up and spinning before it opens.  Same goes for when I'm on the web browsing different sites.  Can I do something to rectify this?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • My mac book pro colors have turned brown instead of blue how do I get it back to its original state?, My mac book pro colors have turned brown instead of blue how do I get it back to its original state?

How do I turn the colors back to the original colors that came on the MacBook. Somehow all of my colors look to be disorganized for instance blue is gold etc. I am not sure how this happened but I really would like it fixed any suggestions?

Your first choice is to go to System Preferences>Displays>Color.  Make sure that your profile set is the appropriate one for the MacBook Pro, which should be "Color LCD".
I'm going to skip all of the normal suggestions of resetting this and that, because from what I've researched this in the past, and it appears you have an issue with either the graphics chip (low probability) or a worn cable causing one of the color channels to be bad or your LED screen has a problem.
In other words, it's probably hardware related.
