Making Mac OSX (10.8.5) Web Server available to public

I have successfully set up apache on my laptop ( Macbook Pro with Mac OSX (10.8.5)) and am able to access the html page via http://localhost
I have disabled firewall on my local router (tried port forwarding and DMZ before this) .
I have disable Mac OSX firewall (from System Preferences)
After all this my url is still not publicly accessible.
What am I missing here?
Any help is appreciated.

The web server would need to have a static address on the LAN. This wasn't your question, but exposing a web server to the Internet is dangerous and not something you should do without the skills of a system administrator.

  • Mac OSX 10.6.8 web browsing hijacked

I seem to have contracted some sort of trojan or malware, or have some sort of DNS changer that I inadvertently installed... or somehow got on my system.
When browsing in any browser (i have used Safari, Chrome, and Firefox), i am often redirected to a chinese advertisement site (should be too suprising, as Ilive in China).  At first, i thought it was the ISP that was redirecting, but after having experienced this issue over the past week at numerous locations, i'm pretty sure my machine has a problem that need to be figured out.
I have tried MacScan and DNSchanger removal tool.  I have tried dumping the cash in the terminal.  I have deleated my flash cookies and all browsing histlry/cache files.  I've tried a few other things that I thought might work as I found them on older posts for similar issues. None of these have resolved the issue.
The only thing i can think that may have caused it is i was recently staying at a hotel and having issue with their internet.  They sent an "IT" guy to fix it and he made some changes to the network settings (i wasn't paying close enough atention to what he was doing).... in the end, the internet never worked at that hotel and from that point forward, i've had this problem. I can't say there is cause and effect with that, but corrolation for sure.
The site i'm being directed to is:  nfdnserror5.wo.com.cn:8080/issueunziped/baidunf120718/index1.jsp?sf=&UserUrl=ww w.facebook.com
    I'm runing a MacBook pro 13"
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
All my browsers are up to date.
Any ideas?  Am I forgetting any important details?

    Hi all,
I am living in China and getting the same thing. Its very recent but it seems ChinaUnicom are trying to takover Google, BBC, NYT and other URL's and point you to their own web services (of course fully supported by the Chinese Government). Behaviour is very sporadic, sometimes Chrome, but mostly Firefox. I have checked host files, dns, everything and the only way to stop it is to delete all cookies and history from the browser after infection and restart. Its a total pain as I have the Google double sign in system turned on and I have to re-authenticate twice to get into my Gmail.
I also have the greyed out DNS entries but they are legit servers - Google 8.8.8.8 and our company one. Maybe they are taking over the google 8.8.8.8 in the Great firewall of China? However once infected and I am in my office (has a tunnel throught the Chinese Firewall) I still get the re-direct and from reading this thread users returning to the USA still are infected so it can not be the GFC!
The thing that makes me think its not DNS is, on the same system I can have it happen in Firefox but not Chrome at the same time, unless the cookies can somehow override DNS.
I can also see that a site actually begins to load and then sometime through the page load (before it completes) the redirect happens.
I would love to know how they are doing this but I dont want to share my cookies with the world! I am 90% convinced this is where its happening.
Any ideas from any of the big brains out there.

    Hi John,
thanks for your advice, I have actually been using the two links you provided,
yet they both lack support for the home user, and all suggest that the users have a static ip address, but this is sadly not the case.
    has anyone used . http://www.dyndns.com/about/home_solutions.html
Does anyone use this service at home for their server and which settings did they use ?
This would at least let me think Im working along the right lines.
Im getting stuck with the Primary DNS questions along the setup route from apple setup. : (

I have removed all of the QTSS files (I think) and I can not enable personal web sharing in the System Preferences. Nor can I go to Terminal and enable Apache. I really need a way to get the Apache server to work. At this point I dont care if QTSS is still on my mac or not!

I have resolved this issue by deleting a few files!

  • Mac OSX 10.5.3 Leopard STANDARD Server CHANGEIP questions

I am confused on how to check and change TCP/IP addresses via Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.3 server in STANDARD mode.
I watched the great Sean Colins Lynda.com tutorial on OSX 10.5 Server, but i still have a few questions with how to deal with DNSs and CHANGE IP
Here is the hardware & scenario:
-- G5 Silver Doors Tower with 1.7GB Ram and Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard 10 user server
-- Cablevision ISP with there BOOST service [that allows you to set-up a server and does not block ports 25 or 80]
-- NO Static IP from Cablevison [they change it once in a blue moon when they want so I rely on DYNDNS below]
-- Apple Airport TimeCapsule [with all latest firmware updates etc]
-- DynDNS account and client software installed on server to update the DYNDNS severs with the current Cablevisions TCP/IP address
    Problem and Question
    ===
Three times a year I will need to move this server. 1/3rd of year and at setup it is on residential Cablevision Account and Apple TimeCapsule Router, Then 2/3 of year server will be behind two funky large networks where I will have to set-up manual IP, DNS, and proxy info
I need to know what the proper process is when I want to move the Mac. When the 10.5.3 STANDARD Server is in STANDARD mode can I just change the TCP/IP address in SYSTEM PREFERENCES...NETWORK ? Do I have to run the CHANGEIP command Afterwards [or Before]
Also, for DNS config on server does it always need to have the loop back self reference [127.0.0.1] or can it just be configed from the Airport and/or network?
And, big problem for now... dumbly when I set-up the OSX Server on the TimeCapsule Network I forgot to write down the TCP/IP address used. Now I am on the second funky corporate network and can't use the command:
    sudo changeip - idon't_knowip 10.0.96.48 server.cmtenyoffice.com server.cmtenyoffice.com
Also, another question for the HOSTNAME... should it be HOSTNAME or FullyQuallifiedDomainName?
My HOSTNAME seems to be "CMTE-Server.local" but I specified the FullyQualifiedDomainName to "sever.cmtenyoffice.com"
NOTE: I do NOT have this domain registered and am not yet hosting a website or email server on this machine, but I may soon register the domain and then point MX records etc to the DYNDNS record that would point to server
    Anyhow, to wrap up,
1- What is the proper process for changing the TCP IP address with a Leopard 10.5.3 STANDARD SERVER?
2- What do I do with CHANGEIP command if I don't know what the STARTING TCP/IP address is?
3- For HOSTNAME should I be entering the unregistered FQDN or the "CMTE-Server.local"
Thanks for any an all info.

    Hi Eric
You use the one its using now.
If the Server is Standalone issue:
sudo changeip - oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
Even if nothing changes you can still issue the command, supply the system admin name and password and let it do its stuff. Prior to doing this you must change the address in the Network Preferences Pane. Although not necessary it does not hurt if you restart afterwards.
If the Server is an OD Master issue:
sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 oldIP newIP oldhostname newhostname
You will not only be prompted for the system admin name and password but also for the Directory Administrator name and password. With both command you will get feedback as to what is going on. Obviously you will see more changes made if its an LDAP Server. Hostname will be the fully qualifed domain name (FQDN) defined in the DNS Service eg: myserver.mydomain.com.
    man changeip
For usage. Actually prior to doing any of this and incidentally a good way of finding out not only the hostname but also the IP address associated with that name issue:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You should run this before/after making the change. If everything checks out OK it should report 'the names match, there is nothing to change'. This is a good a test that lets you know its worked. However its not the only test. I would run host, nslookup and dig also. Next set a client to use the Server for its DNS and then test connectivity with firstly the Server's fqdn and lastly its IP Address.
Ultimately the truest test is: "what impact has the change made on clients accessing the Server and its Services successfully?"
If the Server is a mature OD Master (possibly PDC as well) with DNS, Mail, AFP, SMB, iCal and any other 2-3 additional services configured and running then issuing changeip may appear - superficially - to have worked. Occsasionally - in my experience - serious problems begin to develop with the LDAP database to the extent where the only 'cure' is to demote to Standalone, sorting out DNS and re-promoting. This can have serious repercussions if you have not made preparations to limit the re-build time prior to changing the IP address and issuing the command. Equally it can be successful. However can you take the risk?

  • How do I save sent emails on my web server using Mail with IMAP?

I have email through a web hosting company setup as IMAP through Apple Mail. In preferences, I have the box checked to save sent emails on the server, however, when I send emails they are stored in Sent Messages folder on my Mac and not on my web server. Also, when I send emails on my iPhone they are stored in the regular Sent folder for my email under Mailboxes.
How can I get all my sent emails stored on my web server?

In Mail, select the mailbox you want to use for sent emails, then go the 'Mailbox' menu and choose 'use this mailbox for' and click 'sent'.  The same goes for your iPhone.  In settings, go to the advanced settings of the outgoing email server.  There you can choose which mailbox you want to use for storing your drafts, sent items, ...

  • Troubles using Flash on Mac OSX

    Operating System:  Mac OSx 10.5.8
    Web Browser:  Firefox 16.0.2
    Flash Player Version:  10.3.183.90
It seems to me I have the latest available flash player version for my operating system but I am still unable to view certain videos or strems.

I have uninstalled my flash player using the uninstall program for the version I have, then reinstalled the flash player. The installation goes fine but I still receive this message when trying to watch a video.
On this site here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html   It tells me I do not have the latest version of flash player but none of the later versions are supported for my operating system.
    Am I missing something here?

My mac uses an Intel core.
Does this mean that I am unable to use flash player in my browser untill I upgrade my operating system?
    Yes and no...
    If it's a Core™Duo, you're stuck with 10.5.8, because it's a 32 bit processor.
If it's a Core2™Duo, then you can upgrade to Snow Leopard for just $19.99 through Apple.
Either way, 10.3.183.90 is the end of the line for Leopard.
10.5.8, being a "universal binary" OS, has to have compatiblity for PowerPC Macs, and that limits how far it can go with anything. Office 2004 is the newest version that will run on Leopard, and it CAN'T create .doxc, .xlsx. or .pptx documents that 2008 and 2011 use.
Safari can't go higher than 5, Firefox is limited to 16. There's just a lot that 10.5 can't and won't handle.

  • External Web Server links to internal web server on LAN - how to configure?

I'm hoping someone can give me a bit of assistance with some routing configurations:
Currently, I have a Cisco PIX 515E that's handling my VPN and routing/DNS, etc. I'm dumping the PIX (it's overkill for my organization and it's costing too much money for Cisco-certified techs to come in and still not configure it correctly for my needs - long story).
Furthermore, an external website hosted with our ISP links to a public IP (let's say 192.x.x.1) that points through the current PIX firewall, through a DMZ, and then to a webserver hosted locally behind our firewall.
I'd like our Xserve to take over for the PIX, providing VPN access, DNS, etc. and to properly route calls from the web to 198.x.x.1 to the correct server behind out network.
The Xserve has two NIC cards, one on a public IP 192.x.x.2 (for the sake of this discussion) and one with it's internal address of 10.1.0.2 for file sharing, etc.
The internal web server also has 2 NIC cards, one that listens for the links to 192.x.x.1, and one that listens locally on 10.1.0.80 for LAN application services.
How do I configure DNS/etc. on the Xserve to properly channel the incoming calls to 192.x.x.1 to properly reach the server they're supposed to reach?
Any help is appreciated. If more info is needed, I'm happy to provide.
    Thanks in advance!

I've read your post several times and I'm pretty sure I understand what you're saying, until the line:
    >How do I configure DNS/etc. on the Xserve to properly channel the incoming calls to 192.x.x.1 to properly reach the server they're supposed to reach?
Assuming that the 192.x.x.1 address is a real-world, public IP address that the web server is using, you want all requests from the outside world to go to this address, correct? but requests from the inside world want to go to the 10.1.0.80 address on that server?
That part I get - you want split DNS, which is not trivial to setup, but is manageable. The part I don't get is where the firewall comes in - you're removing the pix and replacing it with an XServe, but the web server has a public IP address in the same range as the XServe's public IP address and on that basis no traffic is going to flow through the firewall.
So I'm not sure if this is a firewall or a DNS question.
Split DNS will handle the internal vs. external traffic going to the different IP addresses of your server. You can't use Server Admin to do this (it can't handle multiple views of the DNS), but it is possible to do by hand.
The firewall element stumps me, though - but if the XServe is going to run as the firewall you might just find it easier to put the web server behind the firewall and forget the whole DMZ concept.
Then again, you could get the PIX operating correctly - it's a viable firewall appliance and I'd be surprised if it couldn't do what you want here.

  • Error Message: Your mac osx startup disk has no more space available for application memory.

    Hi everyone:
    I have a 2010 27" imac.  Dual Core i3, 3.2 GHz and 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM, and a 90% empty 500 GB Hard Drive.  Running Snow Leopard 10.6.6
I have received a message intermittently since I got the iMac.  The Force Quit menu comes up and says "Your mac osx startupdisk has no more space available for application memory".  Sometimes there are a few applications open.  Sometimes none.  Whenever I look in the Activity Monitor Utility I see 2 or 3 gigs of RAM still available for use, and lots of hard drive space.
Im not sure why I'm getting the message, nor what to do to rectify it.  Quitting applications, like it suggests doesn't seem to help.
I am grateful for any advice.

    Hey Lauren.
First of all you do have some software updates you should be doing. 10.6.7 came out a few weeks ago. Sometimes doing all of your software updates resolve issues such as this.
To check for software updates click the Apple and then Software updates.
As this issue is someone broad, I would test one of the articles below to narrow down your issue.

  • Mac osx 10.5.8 to 10.6.8v

I have a mac osx 10.5.8, is it available for a free update to 10.6v?
any solotions for me to connect my new iphone5 to my current mac osx 10.5.8?

You'll have to buy OS X 10.6, as it's not available as a free update. You can order it from the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE. Costs $19.99.
You'll need 1GB of memory, and 2GB may be better for performance, and some free disk space for the installation. Install it, run Software Update until there are no more updates (you'll be at 10.6.8), then you can install iTunes 7.
