Making mov-file in 16:9

I want to export my FCP-movie to QuickTime Movie 16:9. When I try to I get 4:3 when playing it in QT everytime. Which settings should I choose to make my movie look 16:9 in QuickTime? Film edited in Final Cut Pro PAL 16:9 (Anamorphic?). Thanks for helping. PR.

open the exported 4:3 looking QT movie then hit command j
this brings up properties for your movie. select the 'Video Track' and then 'Visual Settings' below.
uncheck "preserve aspect ratio" and then type a 16x9 ratio into the 'Scaled Size' pixles windows. 640 x 360 is an example of a 16:9 ratio, but you could do whatever suits what you are doing.
save the qt before closing and it will remain this way.
cheers

  • IDVD making movie files low res

I made a slide show in iMovie, exported it as an HD file with no issues. I brought the file into iDVD to burn and now the file is showing up very low resolution. I've used this method many times before and this is the first time I've ran into problems. The original images are 9x14 w 300DPI. So I think it's a setting in iDVD. The movie file looks fine when I play it in iTunes or Quick Time. GRRRR

    Hi
The original images are 9x14 w 300DPI. So I think it's a setting in iDVD.
    NO
DVD is as Standard SD-Video - Any encoding program used. iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro or Roxio Toast™
    BUT
The resulting DVD can be better or worse.
    Using
    • iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Sends over every second line to iDVD - result is loss in quality
(I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut - as they deliver 100%)
    • Share to iDVD - I NEVER use this as it degrades movies especially if photos are used and NO Ken-Burns Effect.
I Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution - in iDVD I import from Media
(If I have to use iM'08 to 11 - else I Close iMovie and import movie project directly from within iDVD)
    My notes on DVD Quality
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-layer.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround eg Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • FCP to DVD and making movie file smaller

    Hi Guys
I have a project I made in FCP, it is HDV 1440x1080 and it is one hour long. I have exported it as a 'make movie self contained' quicktime movie and the end result is 12gb and it says the dimensions are 1920x1080
I have dropped it into compressor and submitted it to make a 90 minute DVD, it's doing it's think now but will take about 2-3 hours it seems, is this right or is there a quicker way?
Also I dropped the movie onto an external HD and copied it over to my laptop but when I try to play it it says it is unable to play because it doesn't recognise it. Now it is a quicktime movie I converted from FCP and I have quicktime 7 on my laptop so why will it not recognise it?
I have dropped the self contained movie into Mpeg Streamclip as I want to make it smaller and into something that I can put on my HD and then play on my laptop, what should I convert it to? or is there another way I can export the project out of FCP that will make it a smaller file and one I can put on my Harddrive to then play on my laptop?
    Thanks for any responses
    Mich

    > will take about 2-3 hours it seems, is this right or is there a quicker way?
An hour of footage as HDV?  Yeah, this is normal.  Even if it was ProRes, it would still take a couple hours.
    >Now it is a quicktime movie I converted from FCP and I have quicktime 7 on my laptop so why will it not recognise it?
Don't have FCP installed on that laptop do you?  The HDV codec (and XDCAM and DVCPRO HD) that FCP uses, captures too and exports, ONLY comes with FCP.  DOn't have it, and the computer cannot see the file.
    >I want to make it smaller and into something that I can put on my HD and then play on my laptop, what should I convert it to?
H.264.  Use the QT 7 STREAMING options in Compressor

    Hi -
I'm trying to run a .mov file on a mac mini using 2 monitors - the monitors are set up to make it one large screen.  When I try this it doesn't go to fullscreen, are there any workarounds?
    Thanks!

I tried the drop and drag but it won't cover the entire screen. It leaves a border around it and is really annoying.  I'm told the next OS will fix this, I'm just trying to find a workaround for this if possible.

  • Nikon D7000 .MOV files in Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5

I recently upgraded from Production Premium CS5 to CS5.5. Initially Nikon D7000 .MOV files used in previous CS5 Premiere Pro project would not play well in CS5.5. Now .MOV files do work in both PP and AE CS5.5. Here are the steps I followed. Not recommending you follow my steps exactly, just providing info for those that are interested.
    1.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5 and open previous PP CS5 project, convert project to CS5.5 and rename project file as not to replace previous CS5 project file.
    a.       At this point .MOV files do not play in new project or in AE CS5.5
    b.      Close Premiere Pro and After Effect if still running.
    2.       Using Adobe Bridge CS5.5, batch rename;
    a.       Make copies of original files to new folder location while renaming file extension from .MOV to .mpg
    b.      Let Adobe Bridge finish creating all new thumbnail previews.
    c.       Leave Bridge running in background.
    3.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5, let Premiere finish recreating thumbnail previews if needed.
    a.       Attempt to preview existing .MOV file in project. It worked for me.
    b.      Attempt to play sequence containing .MOV files. It worked for me.
    c.       Attempt to play or modify sequence .MOV files in AE CS5.5 via Dynamic Link within Premiere. It worked for me.
    d.      Close Premiere Pro project and AE projects if open.
    4.       Create new Premiere Pro project and sequence
    a.       Import a different Nikon D7000 .MOV file not previously used or renamed.
    b.      Attempt to play this newly imported .MOV file. This worked for me as well.
    c.       The new, previously un-renamed .MOV file also worked in AE CS5.5 for me.
I will perform additional tests but at the moment Nikon D7000 .MOV files are working for me in CS5.5 after initially performing a batch rename in Bridge CS5.5 from .MOV to .mpg and letting Bridge create preview files. Even .MOV files not renamed now work.
An example of Nikon D7000 footage edited with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5, After Effects CS5.5, and Sound Booth CS5 can be seen on my blog, http://stevelandonsmyth.typepad.com/steve-landon-smyths-blog/2011/07/my-first-hd -video-shoot-with-nikon-d7000.html

    Hello,
I see 2 post in this thread from Todd that say they are working on a fix and it should be out soon.  One is from July, the other from August.  It is now Sept 7th and I still see no patches or fixes for any bugs.  I spent 400 dollars on an upgrade, but is this upgrade going to be supported?
This is making me rethink upgrading to the .5's in the future.
It is a minor bug to most, but in that sense it should be an easy quick fix. Am I wrong? Is this really a complicated issue?
I apologize if this comes off like a rant, but thats kinda what it is.  It is not hard to batch rename files, but its a pain to have to relink all those files in PP.

  • Links to MOV files from PDFs don't open in Safari

I have a website that loads PDFs to the user's browser. In the PDF are links to Quicktime MOV files which open floating windows in which users can see videos. These work fine in both Firefox and Windows Internet Explorer on both of my Win 7 64-bit PCs. And they work in Safari on my son-in-law's Mac laptop, which runs OS 10.5.8, although not in Firefox on his laptop. The symptom is that the PDF (or browser) does not seem to even know that the cursor is positioned on a link; that is, the cursor does not change to a pointing finger as it should, and of course clicking on it has no effect.
On my desktop G4 (867 MHz), booted to OS 10.5.8) the links are also not recognized as such (no pointing finger) in both Firefox AND Safari (version 4.0.2, although the download package claimed it was installing 4.0.5). Or rather the icon I downloaded claims to be Firefox, but appears merely to point to a Mozilla web page. So I suppose we don't know about Firefox. What we can say is that Safari 4.0.2 on my Mac G4 PowerPC tower with 10.5.8 booted functions like Firefox on my son-in-law's Mac 10.5.8 laptop - unawareness that the links even exist.
Booting in OS 10.4.11 (which I can do from another hard drive on this G4 Mac), I have different problems. Firefox does load there (version 3.6.8), and goes to the main html page on the website. When links to the PDF files in that html page are clicked on, a choice between Acrobat Reader 7.0 and Acrobat Reader 9 is offered, but only Reader 7 will open - or claim to open: actually, although the title of the page is correct, all I see is a blank page.
The PDFs do open in Safari (version 4.1.3) on this G4 booted to OS 11.4.11, and the links in the PDFs are recognized as such, but when I click on them the little Multimedia Player Finder window comes up, telling me I need to download the correct media player, even though Quicktime 7.6.4 is sitting just below on the dock, and opens the identical MOV files with no problem directly from the hard drive itself (actually a different hard drive, but wait...yes, it also opens fine when the MOV is copied to the hard drive on which the currently booted OS10.4.11 resides).
Okay, so when I click on Get Media Player in that little Multimedia Player Finder window that opens when I try to go to a MOV link, I'm taken to Apple's website, which offers to download Quicktime Player 7.6.9 for Leopard. Drilling down to the appropriate version for Tiger 10.4.11 and downloading that, I find it knows it should install that to the same hard disk on which 10.4.11 resides, forsaking all others. Good. But when I install that and Restart, it's the same story as before: the PDFs load from the website into Safari, but when I click on one of the links in those PDFs to a MOV file I get the same Multimedia Player Finder window saying the media requires an additional player.
Can anyone shed any light on these problems?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    >With Perian you just goto System Preferences>Other Row, right click or Control+click on Perian, choose Remove Perian Pref Pane.
That sounds like Perian is NOT one of those you can just delete. How does one know which is which?
    >But Perian would only help if you want to display the movie in the Browsers.
In fact, due to issues of publisher's permission regarding about half the video clips, for the present I would prefer the user  NOT to be able to download them, but only to be able to open them in the browser, or even better, in a floating window that's a child of the browser, as I specified to Acrobat, and as in fact happens on my Win 7 PCs.
    >Do you need PDFs to be downloaded, or could you do this in HTML and have the Movie links right on the site?
I'd rather they NOT be downloaded, at least in the sense of winding up in the Mac's Download folder and opening in a separate window. I want them to open directly in the browser window, as the do in my Win 7. (MOre on this below.)
As to HTML instead of a PDF, what I need is to be able to provide commentary about each video clip, which HTML could do just fine, and I could get free of the VERY troublesome problem that any time I make more than a trivial change to the text, I must re-link every stinking one of the MOVs in a time-consuming process. So far, however, all of my attempts to show video via the <OBJECT> or <EMBED> tags have either failed, or opened the clip directly in the page, not in a floating window as I prefer. I believe there's a new <VIDEO> (or is it <MEDIA>?)  tag in HTML 5 I may look into.
    > Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
    Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...  /private/var/run/StartupItems; /Library/StartupItems;
    /System/Library/StartupItems; /System/Library/LaunchDaemons; /Library/LaunchDaemons
Thanks much for this tip. Indeed Protools itself is in the System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items folder, and I'll be removing it from there, but I'll still have the 'In use by another application' problem when I load Protools as a conscious choice. There's a bunch of Digidesign (a.k.a. Protools) stuff in /Library/StartupItems, but ... (I was about to say I would investigate further because Protools is notorious for placing files all over the place and not have a clean uninstall, but I just realized these are StartupItems  - meaning, I suppose, *boot-up* items, as opposed to any time one starts up Protools? If only boot-up, there should be no harm in deleting them.
    >I don't think that is any part of the problem.
Thank goodness! Just guessing: can I assume that (in principle, at least) any app from a prior OS Applications folder should run in a later OS, but generally not vice versa? That's the default assumption in Windows. However, I know of at least one app I have that was written for OS 9 and they announce does not run in higher OS's, though to be honest I've never tried it.
    >The problem seems to be that the ones that do not display the links, or display the links but won't play it, are looking for the Movie file in the Download folder. No expert, but I kind of think it's some MS "stanrd" involved, which Apple trys to keep pace with, but...
I'm convinced you have the right answer here  - except perhaps for the Microsoft part, because the 'Cannot play media because file not found' problem also occurs in Foxfire on my two XP PCs (although not in Internet Explorer where everything works properly on those two XP PCs). The evidence that you're right? I noticed an instance - TenFourFox when booted in 10.4, I believe  - where not only the links to the MOV clips have that problem, but also links from within one PDF to another PDF, which generally *were* working in most scenarios tested so far when the MOV clips were not. For what it's worth, the links to the other PDFs specify another folder on the server, while those to the MOV files specify no folder at all since they're all in the same folder as the PDF that links to them. Which is why the Mac assumes they must be in the Download folder. Depending on the situation, apparently, in some circumstances if you do specify a folder Mac figures it must be on the server if not found locally.
In general, the problem seems to have a lot to do with browser configuration issues, including security, but I don't know what. Perhaps related, perhaps not: Every time I try to load a PDF in TenFourFox it asks me what app to open it with and I have to specify Acrobat Reader. I have found no way to load that as a plug-in (and even if I did, how to tell TenFourFox it should use it). The Get Add-on dialog lets you hunt for plug-ins but neither Acrobat Reader nor Quicktime show up when you ask for them in the Search box.
    But now... guess what?
Today, suddenly, when I access the site with Safari while booted in 10.5.8, EVERYTHING IS WORKING! All the clips open, and they open in floating windows just like I want. This, remember, is the situation in which the links were not even recognized earlier. I have no idea which if any of the changes we've discussed could have brought this about. I've not even been able to find out how to tell Safari it should be using Acrobat Reader and Quicktime. But somehow, it is! (I'm not making this up, nor, despite my admission of memory lapses on occasion, is this a case of a memory lapse. I described this situation early in my initial post, when I had just verified it.)

  • How do I use m2ts movie file format from my old pc with FCP on my mac?

I have recently moved from a PC to a iMac. I have a large number of Sony AVCHD movie files, which were imported to my PC and are in the m2ts file format on my PC. The original files on my Sony camera were deleted so these files are now all I have. Also, for each movie clip on my PC there are 3 files....a very large m2ts file along..... with two very small file....one is a .modd file and the other a .moff file.
I now want to use these m2ts files (and if needed possibly these other two smaller files) on my Mac make movies with either iMovie or Final Cut Pro. and don't know how to import them or convert them for use on my Mac. Can anyone help?
One final question. Can FCP author DVD's or is separate software required. Apple has discontinued iDVD for iMovie (which I find rediculous) and so I'm worried they don't support making DVD's with FCP.
    Thanks

Although I don't use Toast I know lots of people who do and like it for a variety of purposes; for example, many people author in DVDSP and burn disks using Toast. But there are a lot of versions and they have differing features and capability. Do a search in these (or iDVD) forums you'll find plenty of info. Don't know about the other app. Again, if you ask Apple, they may come through with iDVD…they have for others.
Clipwrap quality limitations? Try the trial and test the results for yourself. As far as I know the trial is fully freatured but there is a one minute clip limitation (which doesn't apply to the paid version).
    Good luck.

  • With movies recorded on iPhone 6, how do I convert it to an avi file from a mov file to make it easier to share?

I might be going about things all wrong here, but I have heaps of recorded material of my students performing at a recent convention and they all want copies. The difficult thing is iPhoto tells me that they are over 1gb each so sharing them via social media is hard and I need to find a way of making them smaller so they are easier to share. I recorded the footage on my iPhone 6  which saves it as a .mov file.
Can anyone out there help me? is there a feature in iPhoto or equivalent app that will help?

    Hello nibsy1980,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
In order to get the movie files to be converted to a smaller file size, you will need to copy them to a place on your computer outside of iPhoto, where you can then open them in QuickTime Player to convert the file.

  • How can I send a large .MOV file to a USB?

We had an event a few days ago, and made a movie with iMovie, when I finally finished making it and adding what i wanted and edited to my like I exported it. The file is currently 9.86GB. I have a 32GB USB thumbdrive but everytime I try to "drag and drop" it tells me the file is too large for the volumes format. Now, I'm confused. I also tried exporting it directly to my USB but that didn't work also. I've tried sending the movie through an ethernet cable I had, and I succeeded but the quality downgraded and the movie was converted to a 8.42GB movie. I want the full HD video I took and edited, and thats on my mac. By the way I'm trying to send this movie to my VAIO PC. So does anyone know how to copy .MOV files to a USB? It's a PNY 32GB USB thumbdrive.

    Here's how I did it:
    1.  Open disc utility
    2.  Select the USB drive on the left
    3.  Click the "erase" button
    4.  It will give you a "Format" pull down bar, select "Mac extended journaled." That will give you the complete USB to use. I don't suggest case sensitive journaled.
    5.  Click "Erase and Reformat"
    Success!

  • How can I make my AVCHD mov. files work in premier pro?

I used Panasonic HDC-SD60 for a short film for work.  This has over about 40 clips with around 3 hours of footage However when I import the .mov files from the media browser the audio seems fine but the footage is in a sort of slow mo, and out of sync. I want to edit and do post-production using adobe premier pro, and after effects. However the footage seems to be working in final cut X. There is no lag with playback on quicktime either. What's making this happen? I've read about variable frame rates, it's seems most common in iPhones and tablets? Is that something that the panasonic do as well? Is there a fix? Or should I jump ship and make do with a slightly more limited features of Final Cut?

That does not specifically say Variable FRAME Rate, so I don't know a cure... but, see below

    I'm using Photoshop CS5 extended.
I've been using that to make gifs. It was fine when I import video frams into layers with the video formats of .mov or .avi. But After I installed OSX 10.6.8, this message comes up everytime I want to import videos: "Could not complete the Video Frames to Layers command because the movie file could not be opened."
So I installed my old OS back which is 10.6.3 but the problem is still there.

  • Quicktime Mov File size reduce after Data Recovery

Following a Data Recovery from Apple Care, most of my video files have been reduced to 120x90 pixels making them unwatchable. The Format is Apple Photo-JPEG, 120x90, Millions 16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48000 kHz with a Data Size of 15.16 MB. Other QT mov files bring up the following message "The movie could not be opened" "A necessary data reference could not be resolved"
Is there any way I can get the Dimensions back to 640x480 and can the necessary data reference be resolved.
My Quicktime Player is Version 7.6.4 (518.35)

Is there any way I can get the Dimensions back to 640x480 and can the necessary data reference be resolved.
Assuming the original data is in tact, the normal work flow would be to either reset/resize the movie's "Current Size" setting and re-save the file store the new setting using QT Pro or use QT Pro, an alternative QT application, or a third-part application to re-compress the file to the proper dimensions but this approach, depending on settings, can degrade the video. As to the missing "references," depending on the required "references," it might be possible to re-link/restore things if you know enough about the file structure (which I don't).

  • Missing movie files in iPhoto 08

I have just noticed that in some of my events the movie is missing (the last six). In checking the finder I see that the actual file is missing too. The only changes I have made is to upgrade to snow leopard and I got a magic mouse. There are .mov files in other folder and the movie shows in the iPhoto. I noticed this because the magic mouse wont open the movie files in iPhoto.
So I have two problems: One: where have my recent movies gone that were once iPhoto. (They are not in iMovie and I have checked Time Machine) and two: why wont my mouse open a movie in iPhoto.
    Any help will be great!

When you Control-click on one of the missing movie's thumbnails and select Show File from the contextual menu what do you see?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Can't open MOV files in FCP: "Searching for movie data in file..."

I know this has been posted before, but none of them seem to match up to what I'm all of a sudden dealing with. I have 4 MOV files that I'm converting to WMV. Movie 1 & 2 exported fine. Now, however, any time I try to open another MOV file, I get an error that it's "Searching for movie data in file..." and the file name is ALWAYS the same. The weird thing is, the file it's looking for is none of the 4 movies I'm working with. So how did the first two work and this pop out of nowhere??
I have cleared out the render cache. Dumped all the cache and prefs files I can find, etc. Restarted the machine. Started FCP with the Option key held down.
I've searched everywhere, but people usually seem to come across this error while opening FCP (I'm running 6.0.6). This only happens when I open a MOV file (oddly, I can open WMV files in FCP without issue).
    HELP!

So, I open the movies in QT and the EXACT same thing is happening. So it appears the guy who created the videos did something when he was making them (probably made a reference files along the way). I'm having him re-export the MOV files.
So, it's not a FCP issue.....

  • Whats the best way to move files from a hard drive that wont boot?

I made a bootable USB disk and it appears to work fine. I can still read and open files on the old disk (admin account only) from the new USB drive the old one doesn't boot. I don't have a backup but would like to move files to the USB and then reformat the old drive.
Whats the best way to capture the data?
There are four user accounts on the old drive. Only one on the new drive so far. Do I need to set up four accounts on the new drive in order to copy data from each?

Time Machine is for making backups and restoring ones it previously created. It doesn't restore data backed up or copied in other ways. In your case, it's better to use a cloning utility or manually drag the files than it is to use Time Machine.
