Making Music Videos - rearranging clips

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, so I hope you'll be patient if I don't show the proper netiquette!
I'm trying to make a music video with my iMovie (version 4.0.1), so obviously the timing of the clips with the music is very important. The problem is this: I have two clips (Clip 1 and Clip 2), either in the timeline or clip viewer, and I want to place Clip 2 BEFORE Clip 1. But I've already matched Clip 1 up to the music that I want, so I don't want its position to change. But iMovie doesn't seem to want to let me do that - whenever Clip 2 is put before Clip 1, it pushes Clip 1 farther down the timeline and screws up the musical timing.
I've tried everything I can think of: copy-and-paste has the same effect, using the clip viewer instead of the timeline will still "push aside" one of the already-set-clips on either side of the black placeholder, and pinning (locking) the audio only works with one video clip.
I'm probably missing something very obvious - but if someone would help and point that out, I'd be very grateful. Or let me know if iMovie simply doesn't have this capability so I can look into buying some new software.
Thank you,
LilRicki

... I'm afraid, that is a little beyond the skills of iM...
imagine the timeline made of LEGObricks... you can not place a 8pin brick in a 4pin hole, without pushing other bricks aside...
iM is a consumer toyol ... concepted for simplicity..
iM handles clips differently then professional edit tools... FinalCut Express/Pro allows to place clips in any "hole" in the timeline - too much material "vanishes under" the other, fixed clip...
painstaking workaround:
before inserting the clip, "measure" the length (switch to clip view, there's a "black" clip, showing you the precise length), insert clip, then shorten it to desired timing....

  • Making music videos, QuickTime Pro likes to pause for a second.

I'm making music videos, and some times at the start of the video, or where I add other video to the .mov file, the video likes to pause for 1/4th to a second, then the video like jerks forward to where it should be, while the audio is playing the way it should.
Is there any way to keep this from occuring?
    Example (3 megs.)

Your data rate for the video is 4.5 times of what it should be (9240 kbits/s). Try using 2000 kbits/s for the video data rate.
Here are some other factors that can make the video sluggest along with the above:
    1) The dimensions of the video is 849x406. The height and width of the video should be divisible by, 16 for best... or 8 for better... or 4 for good. This can effect the encoding (always does) or playback of the video.
    Here read this article: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/apps/flvbitrate_calculator/videosizes.html
Even tho the above article is for Flash it also applies to h.264.
    2) The audio is mp3, this isn't h.264 complient. AAC audio is... I would change the audio encoding to AAC.
    3) And lastly...what program did you use to encode this video with?
I'm glade you supplied a short video. Most people don't. See if next time you can supply at least ten seconds. Thirty second would be the bomb!
I took your video and copy/pasted it to lengthen it to 13 seconds. Encoded with Apple's Compressor...h.264....2000 kbits/s...audio ACC 128 kbits/s... dimensions 848x400
    http://www.setfreedenver.org/DemoA/pause_demoA.html
There still is some jerkiness. This is inherent from the footage you supplied.

  • Is it usefull to buy Final Cut Pro X for making music video's or not?

Right now I'm using iMovie 11. I can put the audio an the video togheter and stuff but thats kinda it... So if I wan't to use more effects and stuff should I buy this?

I think FCPX is very good for short-form work like music videos, and definitely a big upgrade to iMovie. Additionally, the interface is similar so you'd have less of a learning curve.
There's a ton of hidden power though, and you probably would need to follow some tutorials and/or read instructional material in order to really be able to use the software efficiently, and understand what it has to offer. Many people have given high praise to Ripple Training; there's also some free training available at: http://www.izzyvideo.com/final-cut-pro-x-tutorial/ that can get your feet wet, so to speak. And I know Mr. Wolsky is working on a book that would be great to have, once it comes out.
At the moment, there are still a bunch of bugs that need to be ironed out, which you can read about on this forum. If you are willing to deal with a beta-quality product that has lots of potential, I'd say go for it. The most important thing to remember is to have a way of backing up your projects so that in the event you are hit with the worst of the bugs, you can still recover work.

  • Timeline won't render in Premiere Elements 12 (and music video editing advice)

I have a section of video I'm editing that won't render. I've read some similar threads but still have a question about how I can edit the clips to 'force' a render.
I'm running PE 12 on a Core i3 laptop running Windows 8, so not a huge amount of processing power. I don't have an orange line above the timeline over these clips and I understand PE has decided that it's already giving me the best possible preview quality and doesn't need to render this section. However, it's four quick edits in time to some music and when I preview it back my computer clearly can't process the video and audio fast enough because I get very jerky video so I can't verify that the cuts are perfectly aligned to the drum beats.
I've been exporting the whole four minutes just to review about five seconds of video in the middle to make sure it's synched, and this is getting really frustrating as I'm having to make frame by frame adjustments to improve the sync.
Is there anything I can do to each clip, like adjust an image setting, to force PE to give me an orange line and want to render this section?
Just as an aside to anyone who edits music video type clips - if you're making, say, four quick cuts to four drum beats in a bar, do you find the audio/visual sync works best if the cut is on the frame the drum beat attack starts on, or does it seem more natural if it's one or two frames after the initial attack so it's 'mid drum beat'? I'm tending to find just after the initial attack looks/sounds better for me - but maybe that's something to do with the delay in my PC processing the frame!
    Thanks for any advice,
    Chris.

    Chris
Please excuse the questions, but I did not want to take anything for granted...are you sure that you are looking above the Timeline content for the render indicator line? Assuming that you are OK with that.....
Are the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar placed so that they span the entire content of the Timeline, including this five second content which you say cannot be rendered. Remember rendering does not fix problems, rather it is a preview that helps you to realize that a problem exists sooner than later. Consequently, please confirm if an orange line persists over that five second content even if you press the Render key above the Timeline.
Have you expanded the Timeline content to the maximum with the Zoom Out Zoom In Slider above the Timeline get the best look at the content on the Timeline in contrast to get the best possible preview in the Edit area monitor?
Have you gone to Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and set the Audio Display Format to Milliseconds if you are involved in audio edits?
Have you been nudging audio in sync with video using shortcuts, such as...
As you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once (one tap = 1 frame nudge)
As you hold down the Shift+Alt keys of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once (one tap = 5 frames nudge)
I would suggest that exploration and experimentation are the best tools with which to work to achieve a specific effect for your specific
    situation.
Please review and then let us know if any of the above targets your questions about your workflow.
    Thank you.

  • Iso, Shutter Speed, Aperture, White balance for music videos or film?

Hello everyone. I just started making music videos. I just want some tips or can someone  direct me to a good  guide for music videos. I know the basics of iso, shutter speed, and aperture already. I read some guides and so far I know I gotta put  my shutter at 1/50 or if i'm recording something at high speed, i  increase it. is it so? Also, I always put my aperture at the lowest. I  have a Canon T2i and Canon lenses 50 f/1.8 and kit lens. I always put my  aperture at the lowest 3.5(kit lens) or 1.8. The tricky part is the ISO. I don't  know where to put my ISO. I know the lowest ISO is good but sometimes  the video looks dark. Do I fix this in video editing programs? Like should I always  stay at ISO 100? What about white balance? I use Final Cut 7.
Also, what about during the day and night? Indoors? etc I also have a cheap LED lights.

your questions are about the very basics of photography.
I would consider to buy a book, which explains photography 'from the ground' ("... for dummies.." not meant as an offence!)
    in short:
a scenery offers a defined amount of light.
Your cameras 'film' aka sensor, needs a defined amount of light to deliver a picture.
So, on recoprding, you have to control the amount of light, and the controls are:
    aperture - opened or closed
    shutter - shorter or longer
speed (ISO) - higher or lower.
Imagine the light as a stream of tiny balls, coming from your scenery: a bigger hole = aperture lets more balls into the cam. A shorter shutter speed reduces the amount of balls. And a higher ISO catches more balls than a lower. ..
Understanding that, you realize that those parameters are crosswise-related: an open aperture + a shorter shutter speed results in the same amount of light on the sensor as a closed aperture and a longer shutter speed.
If the amount of light is still too much, lower the sensitivity = ISO.
If the amount of light is too little, open the aperture, or use a longer shutter speed or raise the sensitivity.
When you set one or two parameters in this equation, you have to adjust the other ones: Video-makers start with the shutter speed, usually set to 1/2 of frame-rate = 1/50 - 1/60 - why? Because it allows a nice looking 'smear' aka motion-blur aka 'film look'.
Now, with a given speed, you can conrtol teh amount of light for the sensor only by aparture; and when you reach limits, by setting ISO.
When you understood this BY PRACTICING, you're next step is the concept of 'shallow focus'/depth of field. And when you understood this BY PRACTICING, you'll will understand the need of Neutral Densitity Filters for movie-makers...
But first things first: buy a book; read your cam's amnual; practice the settings and watch carefully the different results, diff. settings result.
... and it's really just about basics - independently of your device and/or your software.
None of the things mentioned above can be done or 'fixed' in post... (basically...)
    happy movie making!

  • Music videos--nooooo!

what is up with making music videos to pay for now? I enjoyed playing music videos on iTunes, as they were the only music videos i could find for my mac..
but now, it seems that only my windows computer is left for playing music videos free, from those websites...
congrats Apple, you really just made me move more away from you...

More options? All of my favorite music videos are gone. They no longer are free, and now I am expected to pay for something that was once offered free? No way.. I am just going to use my Windows XP based HTPC (Home Theater PC) on Launch.com, and get a LOT of free music videos now, but iTunes had higher quality.
Not only that, the new iPod is no longer Firewire, eMacs are gone, Music Videos are now to "buy", which is useless.
Just because the iPod video comes out, doesn't mean all of a sudden I should pay for something that was once free, because not only can I not watch the videos anymore, I can't even pay for it, I can hardly pay for the gas to my car...

  • Want to lock video to audio, NOT audio to video--I'm making a music video

    Hi
I'm making a music video--one long audio clip which I'm cutting video to.
I've got Pogue's book and it explains how to pushpin audio to video, but the reverse doesn't seem to work.
I've got one long audio clip and I want to lock video segments to it to preserve the synch between video clips and the audio track.
Help doing this would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a good breakdown somewhere of how to make a music video in iMovie?
    THANKS!

I know they gutted a bunch of stuff in iMovie08, but perhaps they added the functionality I'm referring to? Do you happen to know?
Steve told us at the keynote, iM08 was done by an engineer who's a Scuba-diver ... so, audio+iM08? forget it ... the audio skills are in vers.0.1. almost zil.
plus: in iMHD≤6, you are allowed in timeline to drag clips 'to the right' to create 'holes' in the video timeline.. (=black clips) .. iM08 doesn't support that. and: in iMHD≤6 you can 'crop' a clip from the clippane easiely BEFORE adding it to the project's timeline.. frame-precision selection is 'tricky' with iM08 .. (see my site, iM08Tricks)
.. iM08 is extremely fast to 'glue' some clips together; for serious video-editing it keeps some most interesting concepts (skimming), I would like to see in any forth-coming vers. of FCE .. but: 'videos' with iM08? .. not for me ...

  • Which Macbook Pro should I buy for recording, making music and editing videos?

I really have a huge interest in music and editing videos and I want to make it as a part of my career so I want to start making some videos/music videos, etc. I have an iMac, but I share with my whole family, so I don't really have the time and I don't have the privacy that I need. I was thinking about buying a PC but that gets viruses easily unlike the Mac OS. I really hope someone could help me. I was thinking about the 13 inch Macbook Pro with Retina display (8GB Memory and 500+ Flash Storage). That's what I could afford right now.
    Thanks.

Based on reports here and elsewhere, I'm not sure buying a Retina MBP is such a great investment of your money as Retina Displays make much higher demands on the systems... and provide a lower overall performance with CPU/Sub Systems intensive and timing reliant/critical applications such as Logic Pro X
While I understand the 'draw' of Laptops.. because of their portability etc... there are drawbacks that should be taken into account too.. and compared to a similar priced iMac/Mac Mini.... you get much better power/cost ration with an iMac/Mac Mini than you will ever get with a MBP....
Simply put you will spend roughly twice as much for a MBP compared to an iMac/Mac Mini to obtain the same performance... and while Retina does provide for a very good clear screen... the overheads that places on the systems of a MBP.. can often outweigh its real benefits when used with an App like LPX where Retina really serves no useful purpose/benefits....... especially for the extra cost.
Example..My nearly 3 year old 3.4Ghz i7 32GB iMac which cost less by some degree as my top of the range 2013 2.5 Ghz i7 16GB MBP with Retina..  'smokes' the MBP so easily..... when using identical versions of LPX/LP9 under Mavericks.. Even my 2010 Mac Mini Server 2.0 Ghz 16GB gives the MBP a good run for it's money in comparision.. and that cost me less than $800 plus Monitor!
Note: This is just a personal opinion and should be viewed as such....

  • Import Music Video Clips from iTunes

Doing some creative intro videos using iTunes 6.0.3 music videos. Want to import to iMovie 4.0.1. do some editing & then use it back in iTunes as a music video. But iMovie won't recognize it. Stuck. How do I do it???

    Nail on the head Sue.
I thought the users profile was out of date. Maybe not and they are using QT 6 which doesn't support the new H.264 video codec.
iMovie wouldn't import the file either without QT 7 being installed.

  • Making a music video

    hello everyone,
i am wondering why some of the lyrics doesnt show when i
press ctrl+enter. there are 19 lines missing in the music video i
made. but when u check on the flash document itself, all the lyrics
are there. can someone help me out here?
    tnx!

    Hello Empress,
Sent you this answer via email, but thought people on the
forum might be interested in it as well. Also, tell me if it didn't
    fix the problem!
The problem you were encountering was due to the special font
you were using. Flash, by default uses device fonts only when it
generates its .swf files. So what you need to do is to force your
font to be embeded into your swf file. I was able to do this,
however since I'm running Flash CS3 it upgraded your fla file and
you wouldn't be able to open it anymore in Flash 8.
So I'll give you the steps to embed it to your project file
(it may be slightly different in Flash 8) and hopfully you'll have
    the same results.
    Click Window > Library
under the library window there should be an additional
options button (usually top right, close to the _ and X buttons)
Open the additional options dropdown menu.
    Choose 'New Font...'
This should give you a font symbol properties window.
Name the font whatever you like, (this will be the label for
your font in the library window)
Choose the font 'Segoe Print' from the list of your local
    machines fonts.
There are three checkboxes to be aware of bold italic etc..
If you are going to use bold or italic at any point, you will need
to do this process over for both of them(for normal bold and
italic, you will have to have 3 embeded fonts of Segoe Print type).
For now just leave them unchecked
    Hit 'ok'
Now look at your library window, you should see your font
    listed there.
Right click on this font, and choose the Linkage option. On
the linkage popup window click Export for ActionScript and give it
a class name (I beleive you only need to do this step if you intend
to use actionscript to manipulate text with this font, if you don't
intend to use actionscript, its not really needed)
Hit ok and publish your movie.
I attached the swf file that I compiled with the embeded font
just to make sure my results were what you were looking for.
Best of luck with your project.
