Making my computer faster?

I know this seems like a vague question, but I was wondering if there was anything like a defragmentation command (like the ones on PCs) on a Mac? Mine's starting to slow down a little bit and it seems like it might need to go through a little bit of a cleaning. Or maybe it's just getting old. Either way, any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. MimMac (Commercial)
11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Kernel task appears to be making my computer slow

Lately Kernel_task has been appearing a lot in the group of first 5 applications using memory, and immediately making my computer slower, and even getting the internal ventilator make a lot of noise because of the extra work. I am working on the Startup disk space, getting rid of things to make space (what would be the ideal minimum space I should keep unused?), but I don't know if this is related with the kernel_task
Hope I can get any hint on how can I fix this, hopefuly by myself.

  • Making LR3 go faster

I have been so frustrated with the speed of LR3 and have been trying to find ways of making it go faster. After a lot of playing around there are two recommendations that I have:
    1)     If working with raw files (particularly large ones) switch back to the 2003 profile for general editing and only use the 2010 version when you specifically need it. This makes an enormous difference - more like version 2.7
    2)     I noticed that my graphics card uses the Microsoft’s WDDM driver. I have just updated this to the latest NVIDIA driver and find about a 20% increase in performance +  the user interface is not as jerky.
I have tried Window 7 64 bit but have not noticed any significant improvements in performance.
Also I have noticed that ram usage does not go above 1.7GB  under any circumstances with LR3 (no other programs running) also the hard disk light only flashes intermittently so I guess resources are not an issue and that its purely processor grunt that is required.

Thanks for the information... will try with the 2003 profile.

  • Is their any other Processor better then a 2.9ghz intel core i7 that i could look into. I'm looking to make the computer faster & already upgraded the memory from 8GB to 16GB not realy noticing a difference

Is their any other Processor better then a 2.9GHZ Intel Core i7 that i could look into. I'm looking to make the computer faster & already upgraded the Ram from 8GB to 16GB and i'm really not noticing any difference actually it seems to be the same as it was before. Any help with this?

You will only notice a performance improvement if you haven't got enough RAM to use the applications you need. If you had a lot of free RAM before, you won't notice any difference now.
If you already have your computer, you can only replace the processor if you replace the logic board. Your computer requires a specific logic board, so you shouldn't replace it and you have to stay with the same processor. Apart from RAM, the only part you can upgrade is the hard drive. What will make an improvement is a SSD drive, if you haven't got one

  • Making After effect faster on my computer?

    Hi ,
This is my first ever post in this forum and i hope to find some good people with great answers and hopefully help more users with problem like mine.
so heres the thing, this is my computer spec:
iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory:16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
    OS X 10.9.5
working on After effect CC 2014 (latest release).
so my question is how can i make my computer work faster (especially while working and rendering in AE)? cause in the past few months i feel it takes it more time to render a frame or a movie and in general the system feels more sloby.
i know this topic been covered in other sites and discussions but i wanted to hear other users who had that problem in the past and managed to solve it or ease the pain a bit.
    many thanks

As you are using over 4gb Ram you should be using the 64 bit version.
Next make sure you are rendering using all 8 cores (this can be set in preferences).
AE has been 64-bit since CS5; CC 2014 is certainly 64-bit.
Using all 8 cores is unwise:  what will the operating system and any other open applications use?  They need processors, too.  Not to mention memory: a pretty fair starting point is to reserve 25% of the processors & memory to the rest of the system.
And multiprocessing isn't everything it's cracked up to be, because there are effects in AE that only use ONE processor.  If such an effect is stacked with other effects, AE will only use one processor, no matter if the other effects can use multiprocessing.
I'd be interested in knowing what the OP considers to be slow.  Render speed depends on a lot of factors: lights, shadows, the specific effects applied, the dimensions of layers... to name a few.  The render times may be perfectly normal.

  • My battery seems to be making the computer hotter than before and it actually is too hot to keep on my lap.  Does anyone know what this means?.

My computer seems to be much hotter lately when it is on my lap.  Does this ean I need a new battery or is there a problem with the computer?  Thanks.

If your machine is noticeably hotter than you're accustomed to even when running on a hard, flat surface, have a look at this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
You may have something running in the background that's using a lot of processor cycles and heating things up unnecessarily (and running your battery down faster and making your fan(s) louder than usual).

  • Will Yosemite Make My Computer Faster or Slower?

I have been holding off for quite a while when Yosemite came out.  I tried the beta, but quickly reverted back to Mavericks because of that pesky expand button.  That's not why I'm here though.  I need to know if and when I download Yosemite again, will it make my 2011 MBP 13 inch faster or slower?  I heard Yosemite is a RAM hog, but I have 16 GB of RAM, so I don't think that should be an issue.  What do you all think?  I can give more information on the system if you need.
Edit: I should also mention I plan on using the computer mainly for gaming.  It responds well to most games already, but can have (very small) issues if running skyrim or other higher quality 3D games.

I heard Yosemite is a RAM hog,
That is a misconception propagated by people who do not understand that Apple memory management changed with OS 10.9 Mavericks. For more efficient use of RAM, Mavericks and Yosemite now claim a lot of the free RAM for faster access. This Apple article may help you understand it:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
The new metrics for evaluating RAM usage are Swaps and Memory Pressure as shown in the little chart at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window when you have the "Memory" tab selected.
Within the last six weeks, I upgraded two of our Macs to Yosemite and see no difference in performance from the prior OS versions installed: 10.9 on a 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pro and 10.8 on a 2011 iMac. Both have the entry-level processors for their respective models, the 2.5Ghz i5.
Neither computer has third-party anti-virus maintenance software, not do that have the questionable software that comes bundled with "name-brand" external hard drives.

  • Why can't I run Safari and Skype at the same time without making my computer freeze up?

I can't believe I can't run Safari and Skype at the same time without my computer freezing up, it's a MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.6.8 and it has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU with 2.2 Ghz and 2 Gb of RAM. Is this a hardware problem or a software problem?

I haven't gone to the trouble of actually testing to see which uses more CPU power, but Firefox has been faster than Safari on every Mac I've ever owned.
To see CPU usage by process, open the terminal (in Utilities) and enter 'top' at the command line. You might have to expand the window as processes don't appear in any logical order.
It could also be hardware-related: I have late 2009 mini with similar specs and it pinwheels easily.

  • Looking for help in making my computer good enough to play games

I bought a computer from Best Buy right after Christmas. It's a HPE-410y. I'm pretty happy with it in terms of speed and ease of use. I'm glad to be finally done with freaking Vista and blue screens of death.
Anyho, a buddy of mine wants me to play Bad Company 2 with him. I don't know much about the game other than its a shooter. However, I did read in the editoral review that the ATI 5570 my computer came with is weak. Also, 300Watt power supply needs to be upgraded as well? Do you think a graphics card/power supply upgrade is all I need? hmmm
I have glanced at the graphics cards at Best Buy when I've been up there, but not exactly sure what will work, what is good. Looking for any advice and help on what I should possible buy to get this computer good enough to play games.  I wanna do this maybe the end of next month. My budget is 450 bucks. I don't need to pay to have any upgrades I decide to get installed, my brother can help me do that. I just need help in what to buy.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Agreed that it's an above average computer. If you still want to do the upgrade:

Coming right at your budgeted $450.

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Problem with Itunes making my computer freeze

Hi there i've got a frustrating problem. Whenever I open Itunes, my mouse freezes and my computer takes a very long time to load itunes. If I leave the mouse alone, Itunes will seem to work fine, srcolling through the top banners without problems, but everything freezes whenever I move my mouse. this happens only when iTunes is open. What's the deal?
    Thanks, Zach

Nevermind! i manually installed the update and the problem is gone.

  • Making video chat faster

I have SL and my mom has Leopard. I am using a fast Cable connection, and she has ordinary DSL. Sometimes video and audio gets choppy. Both of us are on Wi-Fi using Intel Macs. Anyway you can suggest we try to make video faster?
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,
iChat 2 came out when many "Broadband" services gave about 128k upload.
With iChat 3 came 4 way Video chats and the need for having a faster service both up and down.
iChat 3 and 4 used the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming as the Internet speed.
In iChat 2 and 3 this got read as 0kbps when using the Automatic setting.
In iChat 4 the Automatic setting was changed to be read by iChat as 384k.
(the top Intranet/LAN setting was also suspect in Tiger for iChat 3)
Hence we used to recommend setting the Quicktime Streaming to 1.5Mbps to "Get the most" out of any network Connection you had.
What any of this did was effectively cap everyone to a max of 1.5Mbps upload if their internet connection gave them a faster service.
This would mean that the fastest Buddy was only about 4 times as fast as the slowest Buddy (with some people possibly 1/8th of the fastest) based on common speeds at that time.
With iChat 5 there is no cap by System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming as the setting does not exist. iChat "Sees" the whole Internet speed you have that could be many 10s of Mbps and in turn vary greatly from your Buddy
This is turn means that you can be many times faster in upload than your Buddy has in Download (Let alone Upload)
In reality Upload is the limiting factor.
What we have now is speed differences that can exceed the iChat Buffering which at the minor end leads to Audio Drop outs and at the top end Video pixelation.
On top of that if a Buddy is struggling, processor wise, to deal with a data intensive download (tends to be a bigger pic per frame and sent more frames per second) then their end may not have Processor cycles to get good pic out.
What we are suggesting will, in fact, cap both ends to a figure that we know iChat works at and is probably inside the upload speed of either end and hopefully this will smooth out the pic/video.
A real case of Less is More.
