Making my external not able to spin-down

Hey all,
I've got a portable hard drive that's kinda screwed up, and won't spin up correctly 95% of times I try to start it (I've sat there for hours trying to get it to start powering on and off). I need to get it replaced, but until then...
Anyways, I use it to run live media to a projector for events, and if I leave it alone, it spins down and I can't get it back online when I need it. Is there something I can do that will specify that disk not to spin down? (even if I have to redo it if it changes the mounting drive spec.) It's currently usually set as /dev/disk1s2, so use that to reference the command (I'll probably have to change it as it changes with my setup).
Sorry if this is all horribly confusing. I saw some other forums, but nothing specified which disk shouldn't spin down.

Nah, the energy saver options only specify to internal drives. Does anyone know any UNIX commands that would help? I've seen tons of message boards of UNIX commands to keep a drive spinning, but never one for an external drive.

  • External FW Drives keep spinning down

I've researched this issue on and off for a couple of months now and am not yet satisfied with what I've found so far. I have a couple of external hard drives One G-RAID 500GB and another modified G-Drive (I recently replaced the original drive an put in a new Western Digital 500GB IDE drive inside).
THE PROBLEM: Both external drives keep spinning down after about 8 to 10 mins of inactivity. Is there a way to prevent this?
Other forums say that OS X will ignore the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting for external drives while other suggest that this spin-down is a function handled by the firmware of actual hard disk drive. If the latter is true then I guess the question would then be which drive manufacturer makes a drive that doesn't spin down?
It's very annoying to have to to wait for the spin-up (beach ball) every time you want to save your work. Yes it's only a few seconds but when you have lots of work to do this is an annoyance you can do without.
APPLE: If you are reading, please chime in. Is it true that OS X's "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting doesn't work for external drives?
I've also wondered OS X is the one issuing the command that orders the external drives to spin-down. And if so, how do you turn it off?
    Maybe a command in Terminal?
    Thanks,
    Xavier

THis is certainly a common problem with WD drives, especially, but it may apply to others as well. Do you know what brand of drive is installed in the G-Raid?
Apart from the drive itself it could also be precipitated by firmware in the bridge enclosure.
One solution to this sort of issue is to simply create an automated process that briefly accesses the drive before the 'spin down" process occurs.
You will find a page on how to do this HERE (you will obviously have to substitute the name of your own volume for the one in the article).
An easier way if you don't want to mess around at that level is to simply use a script or app to do the job.
Take a look at Keep Drive Spinning which is free, or "No Spin" which is shareware, for example.
    Cheers

  • External firewire drive constant spin-down/up

I often connect an external Lacie firewire drive to my MacBook Pro for regular time machine backups. When the drive is connected and I'm using my Mac, the drive is constantly spinning and in an 'awake' state.
The drive remains in this state for as long as the display is on. As soon as the display enters sleep mode the external drive spins down, remains in sleep mode for 30 seconds, then spins-up for 20 seconds, only to enter sleep mode again. This cycle continues endlessly causing excessive noise and needless wear and tear.
I've unchecked put hard disk to sleep when possible in the energy saver preferences although this hasn't helped.
    Any ideas?

Try un-checking the drive sleep box.
What model is the drive? Is it bus-powered or does it have its own AC power supply brick? What does LaCie have to say?

  • Equium A110-276 not able to shut down or put into hibernate mode

With the ac mains adaptor connected to laptop, I am unable to shutdown or put into hibernate mode. When shutting down or going into hibernate, the computer appears to do everything correctly until the power is shut off. When power is shut down there is a two second delay after which the computer re-boots again. This problem does not occur with the ac mains adaptor removed from computer (battery only).
Problem started after my husband inadvertantly connected mains adaptor whilst computer was booting up. Have looked at BIOS settings and all ok; have looked at power settings in Control Panel and all looks ok.
    Can anyone please help???

    Hi
As far as I know the Toshiba Power saver controls the going into standby and the hibernation mode.
You should firstly remove your power saver and then after clean removing and after new rebooting you should install the version from the Toshiba driver page.
If this will not solve the problem you should try to update the BIOS. But be careful. Be sure that you use the right BIOS and the right BIOS update procedure!

  • Spin down / spin up External HD

    Morning all,
I'm hoping someone can help me out on a request.
I currently run four external HD's at home, each with there own tasks and storage needs. I have set (using pmset in Terminal) my discs spin down times to 5 mins rather than 10, so these sleep quicker than normal when not used. I'd like to be able to spin down / spin up these disc's on instruction, rather than waiting the 5 mins.
I have put together Applescripts which I then build into Automator which I can run from Finder, and would like to have a simular script to spin down / up the drives on instruction.
I'm very new to writing scripts so this maybe something simple, but I just can't find a solution. Anyone got any ideas ?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Neil Holmes.

Sorry, I misunderstood you to already have the commands you needed for pmset, so I didn't look too closely at that command.
What I have determined is that you don't have the ability to force the disk to spin down immediately - but rather, as you have already discovered, to set the idle duration before it will spin down; the minimum being one minute. (I also noticed that to make a setting stick you need administrator permissions, so I have included that syntax here.)
I am not sure if this gets you any further forward, but the AppleScript syntax to spin down after one minute idle would be*:
do shell script "pmset -a disksleep 1" user name "<adminuser>" password "<adminpass>" with administrator privileges
and setting to never spin down would be*:
do shell script "pmset -a disksleep 0" user name "<adminuser>" password "<adminpass>" with administrator privileges
I am probably being stupid here, but wouldn't it be dangerous if you were able to spin down the disk on command?
*In each case, open Script Editor, cut-n-paste the text between the lines and amend for your username and password - retaining the double quotation marks, but not the braces - and click run.

  • Time Capsule will not spin down

I have read some similar posts regarding this issue, but none could I find that is similar to my issue. I have an older Time Capsule (model #1254) which I recently upgraded from 500 GB to a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 rpm 64 MB cache SATA 6.0 GB/s drive. Old drive was full. Since doing so the Time Capsule will not stop spinning, even when both of my computers are asleep or even shut down. The outside of the TC case is warm to the touch and I can feel and hear the drive spinning. The previous 500 GB Seagate drive did not have any of these issues.
Last night, while at home, I tried downgrading the firmware several times, but no luck. I have since read on the discussions to try renaming the TC and also, resetting the TC. I was hoping that someone else has had similar issues with a similar setup and has stumpled upon a solution. Obviously, I'm worried about the heat eventually killing my TC!
I decided on the 2 TB Seagate drive after reading other forums and discussions, but maybe I choose poorly?
    Thanks all!

Hi, after some tests i went to a new situation, which allows me to spin down the disk, in certain circumstances. It took me a week, so I want to share this experience in case it would be of any help.
I executed the following operations using a MacBook Pro with a new installation of OS X 10.6 from an external disk. This is not necessary, but I wanted to exclude the possibility of some app or hidden process in my system, or even some unknown (to me) new feature of OS X 10.9 using the TC disk without my awareness. During all the test, no other device was connected to the TC network.
First, I copied the Time Machine spare disk volume from the TC to an external USB drive, via the USB port at the back of the TC.
Then I formatted the TC disk to all zeros and reset the TC configuration to factory default.
At this point, restarting the TC, the disk was spinning for hours like before, no change. But now I can exclude it was the OS X Spotlight indexing the files: with the disk formatted to zero, there was nothing to index. So, Spotlight is not guilty to for this buggy behavior of the TC.
Now what happened is that I mounted the TC with Finder, and, 5 minutes later, the disk stopped from spinning. I can't say if this would happen even if I wouldn't format the disk, as I don't remember the last time I mounted the TC as a remote disk. If someone has this problem, I believe this is the first thing to try, keep the TC mounted and see if the disk spins down.
Then I went back to my Mavericks installation, copied the Time Machine spare disk volume, perviously backed up to the external disk, back into the TC. And finally reconfigured Time Machine to keep on using the old backup volume.
Now Time Machine regularly backs up every hour, and 5 minutes later the disk spins down. But this only works when the TC is mounted as remote disk. Whenever I unmount it, and then backup, the disk keeps his old behavior and doesn't spin down.
I think it is out of discussion that the spin down command always comes from the TC and not from the Mac, because the default spin down time of OS X Mavericks is set to 10 minutes (and so is mine), while my TC now spins down after 5 minutes, according to his settings. So, the TC is able to spin down my non-original disk, but only when he likes. This means that if I disconnect my Mac from the TC network, and someone else connects his Mac to the same network, without mounting the TC drive, it will start spinning endlessly. This is definitively crazy.

  • WRT160NL: Automatic spin-down of external USB hard disks?

    Hello,
do external hard disks automatically spin down after a period with no access/use when connected with the USB port of the WRT160NL?

In reference to your post could you please let me know that when you say "spin down" do you mean that does the hard drive goes into sleep mode when it is not in use?
Did you try to connect another hard drive and check whether it is the same case or not?

  • Preventing external HDs from spinning down

Anyone know of a better way of preventing my OWC external FireWire HardDrive from spinning down (and hence slowing some/most? Finder operations down) than 'Spindown fix 1.1' (http://www.index-site.com/software.html)?
    TIA!

    Mark,
I don't think this works on external drives, but you may want to check to see if your Mac's Disk Sleep Timer setting may have been changed. Disk Sleep Timer is one of your Mac's Power Management settings and can be found under the Power item in System Profiler. The default setting for Leopard is 180 minutes, but for Tiger it was only 10 minutes, which was quite annoying.
You can change this setting by typing the following command in Terminal:
    sudo pmset disksleep ?
Replace the ? with the number of minutes you want to set and press <Return>, then when prompted, type in your password. If you use a setting of 0 (zero), the hard disks will never sleep, unless you checked "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver Control Pane.
Again, I don't know if this works with external drives, but it's worth a shot.

  • Hard Drive Spin Down....Good or Bad??

'Two questions, really, but first some background.  I have an earlier Mac Pro running 10.7.3 (as I recall).  I also have a Sonos music system.  All the hard drive bays in the Mac Pro are occupied.  The first has a 2 TB Western Digital RE that has my OS and all my files on it.  Bay's 2 and 3 have two 3TB drives from Hitachi which are mirrored and serve as my internal daily backup which is run and cloned by CCC.  The fourth drive is another RE that has copies of all my music.  I simply copy my two iTunes folders and any other music I want the Sonos system to access to this fourth drive.  My reason for doing this is that I wanted to minimize the run time of my main hard drive as not so long ago, I had two Seagate drives go belly up on me.  All the music on the fourth drive (that serves the Sonos system) comes from my main hard drive which is backed up to the two mirrored internal drives as well as a G-Technolgy mirrored external drive, so I'm not concerned with backing up the drive serving the Sonos system.  So......
Question one is:  Which is better for drives in general, to keep them spinning all the time, or to allow or force them to spin down if they aren't being accessed?
Question two is:  If it is better to spin down a drive, how can I selectively spin down some drives and not others?
For instance, I'm thinking that it is better to spin drives down, then I'd like to be able to spin down drive #1 with my OS but not the Sonos drive because the Sonos system prefers that the drive not spin down or there are connection errors.
Thanks for all your answers and suggestions!

I understand the limitions of mirrored drives, but my main drive is not mirrored.  What is mirrored are my backup drives.  One daily backup onto mirrored drives in bay's 3 and 4 in the Mac Pro.  And a less frequent backup on mirrored drives that are stored in a fireproof safe in the garage.  Should my main, non-mirrored drive fail (hopefully it'll be a long time as it's an enterprise class drive), I've then got any one of four cloned drives to choose from.  Of course, I would choose the most recent ones that are internal, but should something catastrophic like a fire occur, I'd then have two identical cloned and bootable drives in the garage.
I recognize that in the case of a real catastrophy, the drives in the garage won't be as current as the drives in the Mac Pro, but in both cases, the backups themselves are pretty robust because they are mirrored.  If one backup drive fails, the other will likely be fine and I can then easily proceed from there.
It set up properly, mirrored drives offer some great redundency in case of hard drive failure.  What prompted me to go this route was three drive failures in one year, all of which were Seagate Barracuda drives and relatively new.  And two of them were backup drives.  My backup drives are now Hitachi and mirrored in case one dies.  And CCC makes it so I can just plug the backup drive into my #1 bay and I'm back up in business.  Except for MS Office which somehow limits the number of times it can be cloned and you have to call MS and get a new product code.  Easy to do, but a pain.  I learned this as a result of swapping cloned drives in and out of my wife's MacBook.  It all worked perfectly until I did it once too many times and MS wouldn't load.  Hence the call to MS.
    Thanks for all your feedback!
Oh, and any info on controling which drives spin down and which don't?

  • Thunderbolt Drives won't spin down and sleep in Mountain Lion

In Lion when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt Drives would spin down and sleep as well. In Mountain Lion, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt drives do NOT spin down and sleep. Can anyone confirm or duplicate this issue?

I have the same behavior, however I'm using the TB to FW800 adapter. I have 6 FW800 drives in a chain. All would sleep when MBP was put to sleep under 10.8.5 (ironically fixed after 10.8.4, now broken in 10.9).
Seeing the same issue with native TB drives makes me think it's a problem with TB software in general.
