Making my music available to another user

Hi, a quick question...
I have two users using my MacBook Pro, and I want all the music that is available to me to be playable by the other user too. I have managed to set up persmissions so that the other user can access the Music directory on my home drive, and I have changed the other users itunes preferences to point to this folder, however none of the music appears in itunes.
Is there any way of adding all my music without double clicking on each mp3 seperately?
I'm using iTunes 7.3.2 and OSX 10.4.10
Thanks!

Quit iTunes.
Drag the iTunes folder to the Shared directory.
Start iTunes holding the Option key and select the *iTunes library* file in the iTunes folder in the Shared directory.
Quit iTunes.
Have each user start iTunes holding the Option key and select the *iTunes library* file in the iTunes folder in the Shared directory.
That's it.
Any and all changes by any user are seen by every user. This is because everyone is using the same iTunes library file.
In order to access iTunes, it cannot be in use by any other user at the same time.

  • Making a new website for another user

    Hi all,
How can I make a completely new website for someone else without publishing my own pages to a map? Do I just delete my pages from the published material or does my index page go beserk when I do that?
    Thanks for your input!

By MMe I'm referring to a MobileMe account thru Apple. As I recall that's normal for iWeb 2 when you have multiple sites in one domain file. If you're running the latest iWeb 2, 2.0.4, you can split the sites into two domain files. That way you can open, edit and publish only the site you want.
I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and jthen only republish the one I want.

  • Update available for another user's apps

I just purchased a brand new iMac & set up two users with separate usernames/passwords.  Now the app store says I have updates for apps that I don't have, nor want. These are apps that my wife downloaded under her username/profile.

You are seeing her app updates and she will see your app updates because App Store searches all the hard disk to find App Store apps.
Also, applications are installed by default on a common folder for both users (/Applications), so you can try to move the App Store applications to ~/Applications (being ~ your user folder). Doing this, the other user shouldn't be able to see app updates for your Apple ID as you can't access to one user folder from a different one

    No... do not move programs.
    About the iTunes library files
Your iTunes library files track the media you add to iTunes, how you've organized it, and other information such as playlists. By default, these two files are in your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

  • How do I make iTunes music available in more than one user account?

I have 2 user accounts on my computer. One for me and one for my wife. What I'm wondering is how I can make it so that the music in iTunes in my user account can also be available in her user account. When I'm on her user account iTunes is empty and there are no songs in it. I want for her to be able to have my same library in her iTunes. How can I do this?

    Hi Bob,
you could try coping all your music onto an external drive & choose that drive as both of yours music folders. It should work... I think.
Or just burn a data disc of your tracks & import them to the second account.
I've not got two accounts on my machine but the above should work, in theory. Give them a try. Though I'm unsure about purchased tracks.

  • Just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. transferred data from my old macbook over n it created another user name. that's actually good--xcept for music, which i want on my new acct. How do i move files from my "old comp" acct to my new one?

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? I've googled extensively but can only find instructions for OSX 10.6 and previous, which talks about the "Shared folder," which I can't seem to find.

That's actually bad. Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and seriously consider starting over.

I wish to share some of my music with another user on my MAC.  I created a playlist of the music I wish to share.  I enabled home sharing and selected share selected playlists.  I went to the users account and could not find the shared playlist.  Within iTunes, I went to music, add to library.

  • Making IWork available to multiple users on the same Mac

I've downloaded IWork. it's available under my user name but not the other users on the same computer. how do i make it available to them as well?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did the iWork '09 folder get installed in HD > Applications or in HD > Users > (your account) > Applications? For the iWork applications to be available to all users they must be installed in the main Applications folder. I think if you were not logged in as an administrator for the installation they would only be installed in your Applications folder. You will need to reinstall while logged in as an administrator to have the applications installed where they will be available for all users.

  • How to fast-switch to another user while keeping iTune playing music

it's really bugging me as my wife is getting addict to iTune. I've to find a way to switch back to my logon to work on my own stuff. Please help.

You could just restart. It should warn you that another user is logged in, but still allow you to override.
While not technically "logging them out" you can kill their windowserver process in Activity Monitor. I don't know, but I would think the Restart option would be more elegant for that user wrt open documents.

  • Sharing music at home; sharing User IDs

My wife and I are faced with a problem of playing music from the iTunes library we have built over the past few years either from CDs or from the Apple iTunes Store.
I recently imported all our Cds into iTunes to save space and allow equal access. Our music now exists on ONE external hard drive. Most music tracks were imported from CDs, and therefore we don't have any restrictions who can play them. But then there is the music that either of us bought before and since married with our different User IDs. This means that music can only be accessed if originally bought by that person and on that authorized Mac.
    So what can we do?
Is homesharing a good option? is it a viable option? Doesn't this require both Macs to be open at the same time to enjoy the music? What happens if I go to work with the music hard drive, and my wife needs to listen to tracks? I'd like to clone our music drive so she can access music in this situation, but it wouldn't allow her to listen to music I bought.
Placing all the music on one hard drive makes it easier to consolidate your library, but only if you can access all the music.
What have couples done in the past? Once married, do they create a 'couples' ID and buy music together for the home? Do you authorize your computers to that new account? And if so, what about the older music bought with older User IDs?
How do people work around the authorization problem as well?
Maybe the solution is to create non DRM versions of all our music and then we might be ok? Is that the only solution?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this matter.

ps: EULA has destroyed the idea of sharing. Piracy is so much easier with digital files, but knowing that parents can't hand down their music or films etc to their kids is very sad.

You seem to be making quite a few incorrect assumptions in your post.

Why do you think it means that? (it doesn't)
    So what can we do?
Keep the music on a hard drive at home.

    Yes.
What happens if I go to work with the music hard drive, and my wife needs to listen to tracks?
"The hard drive"? As in a single hard drive? Don't you each have hard drives on own computers? She can listen to all the tracks in her library.
I'd like to clone our music drive so she can access music in this situation, but it wouldn't allow her to listen to music I bought.
Why do you think this? iTunes purchases have been DRM free for almost 5 years.
And even with DRM, just authorize the computer for each others account (which is automatically done when you enable Home Sharing).
What have couples done in the past? Once married, do they create a 'couples' ID and buy music together for the home?
Personally, I would not recommend it. Keep the accounts you have. No sense in tossing another into the mix.
And if so, what about the older music bought with older User IDs?
    Just play it.
but knowing that parents can't hand down their music or films etc to their kids is very sad.
    Why can't they?

  • ITunes message 'the phone " " is in use by another user on this computer'

I am receiving the following message when I try to sync my iPhone with iTunes:
'the phone "phone name " is in use by another user on this computer'
I believe that this happened as a result of the following:
I forced a restore of this phone. When the phone was restarting itself I closed and reopened iTunes on my iMac. When I reopened iTunes I rec'd a message that the iTunes Library file was locked. Per discussion advice I solved this locked file problem by overwriting with a slightly older iTunes Library file from Time Machine. This solved the locked file problem, but now I can't sync my phone to my iMac any attempt to do so results in the message noted above .
The phone will sync (restore) with iTunes on another computer.
I have tried the following to correct the problem, but no success at syncing my iPhone to my iMac:
    1. Forced another restore of the phone to factory settings (on another computer, Mac Air)
    2. Restarted iTunes
    3. Restarted the iMac.
    3. Opened iTunes with a newly created Library
Any suggestions as to how I might convince my computer that my iPhone is not in use by another user much appreciated.

    2. There have been countless articles in the last few years explaining why some countries have iTunes music stores and others not. The main reason is something called copyright.
    3. There is an Apple app store in the Philippines.

Kandequan. It may be that something has become corrupted, but I also see a problem in that the iPhone is only supposed to sync with one computer. Trying to sync with a second one will not work.
There are a number of things you may need to do now, but first decide which computer is to be the one that you sync with: the master, if you will.
Whichever one you decide on, you need to make sure that all files point to that and there is a process written up by a user "wjosten".

  • IOS4 Update on 3GS New Restore- "iPhone (Name) is in use by another user"

The initial problem I encountered on my 3GS to iOS4 update was I couldn't do ANYTHING that required the network, e.g. Facebook, Safari, certain apps, youtube and more. I was told by an Apple in-store rep to restore AS NEW IPHONE instead of using my backup info, so I did.
It works almost perfectly now. However, I just attempted to make a new playlist and sync it to my iPhone and I am getting the message "iphone (Name of my iPhone) is in use by another user on this computer"
The problem with this is that I am the ONLY user on this computer and have been since I have had it.
My photos will sync through iPhoto but iTunes is no longer recognizing my iPhone's name or the device. I am not sure what caused this, but any help would be awesome.
Since the new update I changed the name of my iphone but I do not see why that would be an issue.

    Hi,
Itunes hung and had to be "force quit". When I started it again, I got the following message.

I rebuild he iTunes libaray, but the message won't go away. Any ideas? I'm guessing there is a lock file somewhere.
