Making Network home folder into a local one

I am trying to take someone's home folder that's currently on our OSX server and move it to their local machine. Reason being is that this person is always at the same computer and it's a little slower when they're using the server based folder (plus it has annoying quirks).
I thought the easiest way was to just copy the home folder from the server onto the local machine. It all seemed to work fine, however I can't seem to get it to "forget" the network home folder location. For instance, Safari still saves all downloaded files to the old network home folder instead of the local desktop.
How can I get it to forget about the old networked home folder? I tried changing the password of the server account but it still seems to be able to mount the share hosting the networked home folders.
Otherwise, can anyone suggest a better way to move a network home folder to a local machine? I'm going to do it for a couple of others soon and any suggestions would be great! I saw a great post about how to move local to network and that's what I'm going to do in that case, but the other way around seems to be elusive.
Thanks.

Hmm, I don't quite understand. I guess my main question is, how do I erase all memory of the home folder that was based on the server for this account? Is it a matter of deleting preferences, or caches, or something else?
As I copied everything straight over it obviously remembers where the server home folder is and keeps defaulting to that desktop instead of the local one. I guess I could just delete the server home folder and that would force it to the new spot but it could cause other problems. Hmm.

  • Audio CD not readable with network home folder, but is readable locally

When users log into a client machine with a network home folder and put in an audio CD, they get an error "Disk Insertion The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
The problem doesn't exist with data CDs, and when logging into the machine locally, the audio CD works fine.
I've tried creating new users on 2 different servers (one has 10.3.9 and the other has 10.4.6), but the problem still exists.
I've tried multiple client machines and the problem exists on all but one of them. All the clients are running 10.4.5. I tried updating one of the affected clients to 10.4.6, but no luck.
I can't figure out what the setting is on the one client machine that works so I can duplicate it for the others. I'm also confused, though, that if a disk can be read when logged in locally why it wouldn't also work over the network.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Troy,
    Welcome to the forums.
Just a guess... are your network users, groups or computers managed with WorkGroup Manager?
If so take a look at the settings for user (or group or computer) under WorkGroup Manager > Preferences pane > Media Access.

  • Network user, network home folder, and the login keychain

I've got everything set up in WGM. I can log the user onto a workstation, and the home folder maps to the appropriate network location.
What I can't seem to do, is get a login keychain working. The keychain exists, in the proper folder on the network home folder. Keychain Assistant First Aid says everything is hunky dory. The problem is that the login keychain won't show up on the keychain list, nor can I add it. If I delete the file from the networked location and run first aid again, it says the login keychain doesn't exist and proceeds to create it, just like I'd expect. Only problem is, the keychain still doesn't show and I can't use it!
So any time I try to save email passwords, Safari passwords, etc. it errors out. Going through the prompted reset dialogs doesn't seem to do anything. I'm not seeing any console messages pointing to errors, either.
    Anybody gon any ideas?

Ok then, I got one for you. Similar sort of thing. Just created a 10.6 server, created all the relevant users within WGM, then imported the home folders from the previous 10.5 server. Ensured all new UIDs matched the UIDs from the 10.5 WGM because it then simplifies permissions - i.e. all the permissions are recognised by the new server automatically for the right users.
Now for one of my users, her login keychain is never open by default. When you start Keychain Access (she's on 10.5.8 btw) you get the System keychain and the System Roots list of certificate authorities, but no login keychain.
Have checked the permissions of her ~/Library/Keychains/ folder and they're correct, as are the permissions for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain.
Double-clicking on the login.keychain file opens it up just fine in Keychain Access, however as soon as you close KA and re-open it, the login keychain's gone again.
I've tried importing a keychain, adding an existing keychain (obviously the login one) and creating a new keychain called login, none of which work - there's no error, it just ignores me.
I'd rather not create a temporary user account, transfer all the docsuments/mail etc, delete the original and recreate a new one using the old name and copy everything back, but unless someone can help me out, that's what I'm going to have to do.
There has to be some guru's out there somewhere that can help???
    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

  • IWorks 09 Crash under OD Network Home Folder

    Hi,
We have a Mac Pro running Lion Server and a few iMacs running Lion. We are trying to setup network home folders for our users. The server is the OD master, and each user is configured with the correct network home folder path. User can login with no problem, but the interesting thing is that when the users try to open any iWorks file (doesn't matter if it's Numbers, Pages, or Keynote), the application would hang and give out a spinning wheel of death. Same symptoms for Text Edit. I've tried my best to verify the permission, and everythign seems correct. If I login to a local user and connect to the server using that same user's credentials, I can open the exact same file with no problem. Does anyone have an idea what might've caused this?
    Thanks.

    Hi
You can't stop the creation of those files. As already mentioned this is the way it's supposed to work. You can redirect Home Folders to aid performance - assuming you're having network performance issues? If the perceived problem is more to do with storage or quotas then some obvious options are to increase quotas and/or storage space. Usually both.
    For redirecting home folders:
    http://images.apple.com/education/docs/Apple-ClientManagementWhitePaper.pdf
Honestly the creation of these files is not really a problem. Your biggest concern is going to be when users start using applications like iMovie and/or Final Cut (for Video) and/or Logic and/or GarageBand for Audio and/or the Adobe CS Suite for Graphics. Video files can get quite large depending on what is trying to be achieved. If you're trying to do this over the network it can become punishing. You may find a similar issue when it comes to Graphics. As ever YMMV.

I copied my PS CS5 Plug Ins folder into my CS6  one & it started having problems opening & errors... would someone be able to tell me what the basic/original ones should be in PS CS^6 Plug In folder please?

That would be any other plug-ins you've installed after Photoshop.  Out of the box that folder is completely empty with Photoshop CS6.
To be completely accurate, what you did wrong was that you copied plug-ins that were supplied by Adobe with the earlier version of Photoshop.  Those plug-ins logically conflict with the current ones Adobe supplies with Photoshop, which are now provided in another place.
They've changed the folder structure, so no longer are any plug-ins supplied by Adobe put in that folder.  Hopefully for a future version update you can copy those you have in Photoshop CS6 without getting yourself into the same trouble.

  • Networked home folder

    Dear readers and admin's
A friend of mine which does support a Mac Mini Server 10.6.8 in a school does have the problem, that he is able to access the networked home folder of users as long as the client system is 10.5.x or newer, but if he tries to access the very same home folders from systems with 10.3.x or 10.4.x, he is not able to login.
Unfortunately, I didn't find a clear declaration or statement that this is possible or not.
Does anyone have such a setup or can anyone give me some notes, help or tips?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards
    Thomas Thaler

    The problem is solved.
It was a dying switch. After exchange, the users where able again to access their networked home folder from 10.3/10.4 clients
    Thank you again.

  • Change Network Home Folder to Local Home Folders

Hello and Thanks in advance for your help.
I created a mac network in our school this year. This is used for a video editing lab of 14 iMac's. I used a Mac Xserver with Server 10.5.7 on it and my clients are also 10.5.7. I upgraded my server hard drives to three 1TB hard drives in RAID 0 array. I created my users and decided to use true network homes so the students could use any mac in the lab at any given time. The Server has two Gigabit connections to it. This setup works great until you get more than 5 users at one time importing and editing videos. I believe the servers Hard Drives could not keep up with the data streams for multiple users and video editing.
What is the easiest way to switch the students network home folders to local home folders on the iMacs? I tried it with a dummy account that I've been using from the beginning but when I try to change the mobility preferences in WGM to create a mobile account at login and use default syncing I get 2 different error messages.
Either error while saving 14006 Or Error while saving 14084
Sometimes an error about DSutil.cp line 712 comes up as well.
Is it possible to have the students current Network Home folders sync to a local iMac and then switch them to use local home folders only? I'm trying to keep the students from losing the last few weeks of work.
Should I try to use the create mobile account on the actual iMac instead of in WGM on the server?
    Thanks again,
    Mitch

    Thanks for the info Tony.
Just for other people who are looking for answers to this problem I'll give my specifics.
    14 iMac workstations
1 XServe server upgraded w/ 3 1TB WD Caviar Black drives RAID 0
All networked using 1 Cisco Gigabit switch
    1 GB to each iMac
    (2) 1 GB connections to the Server
The original true network home folders worked out okay for Final Cut Pro users. About 6 could work at the same time, capturing and editing their work. For iMovie HD only about 3 could use it at the same time.
I could not get iMovie '09 v 8.0.5 to import to the network homes. Something about video library errors if I remember correctly. So I went back and they have been using iMovie HD with no problems.
There was a lot of dropped frames and time wasted on importing with time code brakes.
This is where I decided to create mobile accounts for each student on a specific computer set by the teacher. As stated about it will take about 3 minutes per GB of data to copy from the server to the local computer. Near the end of the student list (about 70) it would copy the data fairly quickly and then would sit at 100% for about 7+ minutes before It would finally complete and log off.
The login sync still only takes about 1 full minute and the logout usually takes 1 minute but can sometimes take up to 3 depending on how much capturing they have done.
After about 2 full weeks of use, this solution still seems very viable. There have been no complaints about dropped frames or lag while capturing. There is also no lag while using iMovie HD (which was very problematic before) during editing and playback. This is still great because at the end of the day they still have a mobile account and can access their data from any mac, besides the one they have a mobile account setup on. Also, if something happens to the server they can still login to the computer with their mobile account and still accomplish work and when the server is back up it will automatically sync on the next login.
I'm not sure if it was the network or hard drive speed causing the lag. My server will only hold 3 SATA drives and they had to be configured for 1.5 instead of 3.0. The RAID was also setup w/ apple software and was not a hardware card.

  • Sync my local folders to the network home folder?

HI, I use the Workgroup manager to create a new user and then under the "Home" tab to create a "HOme" for that new user.   When I save a file onto that new user's local desktop; I want that new files to be copied to the user's home folder's desktop.  How can I do that?
When I logon the Macbook with the new user's logon, I can see the home folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Musics, ...etc) there on the server with a "no access red sign" and just no automatically sync to those folders.   What do I miss out here?
Can anyone help?  I want the users to be able to sync all the files from their Macbook to their home folders on the Xserve once they shutdown.

So you are saying that on the server you see red circles on the folders on the server right?
That would be correct because the local admin on the server does not have access to them. That is how it is susposed to work. If you would like to have access to those folders you can add the local admin to the ACL of the users folder and then propigate it down to the rest of the folders. You can do that in server admin.
You will then be able to see if the data is getting to the folders on the server.

  • One user (only) getting "disk full" errors for network home folder

I have a few users in my office with their home folders on the server. Everyone seems to be fine except this one person, who, a few times a day, gets an error saying that there is no space in his home folder and a program can't save preferences or Mail can't write new mail to disk.
I don't have quotas turned on, and there is 120gb free on the disk with the home folders.
Has anyone experienced this before and know what the solution is? It's Server 10.3.9 and workstation 10.4.4.

I have about 100 Portable home users also here and only a few are affected with this issue. Their home folder on the server is 15GB but can't write more then 3.5GB to the server. It is very wierd.

  • Error -54 Importing to network Home folder

I posted this yesterday but I seem to have posted in iTunes for Windows by mistake, so here goes again:
Since upgrading to 10.4/iTunes 7 (I did both at the same time, now on 10.4.8/7.0.1) I'm having trouble importing to iTunes from anywhere- from files on the desktop to CDs. It doesn't matter what format (AAC/AAIF etc) I use.
When I try to import I can sometimes do one or two tracks, but most often none, before I get the message "Attemting to copy to the disk 'Home' failed. An unknown error occurred (-54)".
It seems to be a permissions issue, but copying in Finder works as normal. I am a network user but others on the same network with similar configuration have no problems.
If I choose not to copy the file into the iTunes music folder in preferences, there is no problem adding to the library. I've tried setting the location of iTunes Music to be elsewhere in my Home folder but this makes no difference.
    Thanks
    Phil

I did get this working. I had to change the hostname using the serversetup application via terminal
For anyone interested how it's done in the Terminal:
    - Go to /System/Library/ServerSetup/
    - Then type "./serversetup", and let the Usages help you out.
That seems to be the only way to change a hostname of a server. It cannot be done in Preferences > file sharing or Server Admin.
I then had to reconfigure the OD replica and reconfigure the sharepoint by disabling automount (press save) and then unsharing the folder (press save). It then has to be setup using the reverse process. Disabling automount and sharing at the same time did not work for me.
Only after this did it work. This is something Apple really didn't think about...

  • Network home folder clients (10.8.2) freezing

    Hi all,
I have a Mac OS X Lion Server (10.7.5, all updates, Mac mini server with TB RAID attached) serving network home folders to Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 clients.
Some of our users are experiencing freezes that manifest shortly after login. It appears that the shared volume is no longer available, based on the following system log entries. Again, this only happens to some users, but those users have it happen consistently...

I can confirm that after 8 months of fighting this problem, this worked for us:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    Cafarom, thank you so much!!
File a bug report with Apple about this. I just did, here is my report, hope it helps you.
    Summary:
Some network accounts freeze soon after logging into OSX server. Upon logging in, soon after all the applications are reopened from the previous session, the problem starts (after about 1 minute from login). Applications will begin to hang one-by-one as they try to access the disk. This is fatal and the system must be hard-reset to recover.
This seems to be Spotlight related, disabling spotlight on the client machines seems to "solve" the problem.
    Steps to Reproduce:
Not all accounts seem to be affected, I have not yet been able to isolate the trigger. Once a network account becomes "infected", nothing can be done to fix it and the problem persists across all client computers. That is, trying to login with the infected account from any client machine on the network, will always produce the same degenerate behavior.
Once an account becomes 'infected', it can be temporarily cured by backing up the contents, deleting it and recreating it on the server. However the problem soon returns again.
All client machines and the server are running OSX 10.8.3, and are bound to the server. The server is the Open directory master and the DNS server for all machines in the network. No other servers or non-Mac machines are on the network. The server is using a self signed certificate and has the following services running: Calendar, Contacts, DNS, File Sharing, Open Directory, Profile Manager, Websites.
All network accounts use the following Home directory on the server: /Users/
    Expected Results:
Upon logging in, applications respond normally, the system and applications do not freeze.
    Actual Results:
Some network accounts will always cause the system and all applications to freeze starting after about 1 minute from logging in.
    Workaround:
Permanently disable spotlight on all client machines with: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
This "fixes" the problem and the affected network accounts will now be able to log in without freezing.
    Regression:
Here is the error message from the client machine that accompanies the problem. This message repeats verbatim on every login by an infected account. When applying the workaround this message is not present.

I don't know if this is relevant but myself and some other users have been experiencing a problem since 10.5.5 where machines randomly kernel panic or freeze at logout.
Our issues are related to the SMB protocol in an Active Directory environment.

I finally resolved my high AFP load issues (8 Xeons maxing out) but i'm not entirely sure which tweak fixed it, I think it might have been a setting on the XServe RAID, disabling "Allow Host Cache Flushing".
    Hope this helps.

  • Copy messages in template folder into a new one

    Hello all,
i get a new phone N97 and i need to copy the message templates i created before from the old phone into the new one
    the old one belong to E-Series ( E50 )
    how to do that please
using Nokia PC Suite or IR or what ?
    thanks for help

    Hello Impish,
if there are no blue rectangles, there are two reasons for that:
    1. You have inserted a rectangular shape, not a textbox.
    2. You have inserted a textbox as an inline object.
If it is the second reason - what I think it is - show the wrap inspector (the third button) while the textbox is selected and activate the second radio button at the top titled "Fixed on Page". Now you will see the blue rectangles. A double-click into it will create a new textbox with the same size of the first and containing the text that was covered by the borders of the first textbox.
You can connect/link two existing textboxes by dragging from the right bottom blue handle of one textbox to the left top blue handle of a next textbox (or vice versa).
Have in mind that every object will be inserted as an inline object when you can see the text cursor in the page, independent if the text cursor is placed inside the page text area or in a shape.
If you want to insert fix positioned objects, be sure the text cursor is not visible before insertion.
    Frank.
