Making New Categories For Software Instruments

Garageband comes with categories like Pianos and Keyboards, guitars, Synth Leads, etc. I was wondering if there is a way to create your own categories in Garageband

Yes. You can make a folder that will show up in the GB browse window for your new category.
I have one called "Experimental Ins"
Heres the path to make the new folder.
Macintosh HD>Users>User Name>Library>Application Support>GarageBand>Instrument Library>Track Settings>Software.
Make a new folder in the "Software" folder and it will appear as a new category for instruments in the GB Browse window.
One addition to HT's post. Make the Folder first. Then when you make your new instruments you can just save them to the folder instead of moving them.

Why won't my Creaive Cloud find new updates for software?

Why won't my Creaive Cloud find new updates for software? For example, I know Illustrator 17.1 has been released with cool new features; however, my creative cloud seems to be oblivious to this update and any other updates and I do not know how to make work properly again. Creative cloud hasn't prompted me to update any software for over a month and so it is likely missing plenty of updates; however, it is the Illustrator update I want most.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lee if you remove and reinstall Illustrator do the new updates get applied? If not then please review your installation log files for the error which may be preventing the update from being applied. Please feel free to post any specific errors you discover to this discussion.

Is there a way to display played chord names for software instruments in the new Garageband?

I know this was possible in previous versions, and displays by default in Logic, but can the new Garageband show chord names for MIDI inputs on software instruments?

No, you cannot list the files from the res folder. You could just put a textfile with all the image names in the res folder, and read the images file names from there..

Writing Music Notes for Software Instruments

How do I write music notes for the software instruments to play? I got to the place to write the notes, but I can't make the actual notes show up on the chart. How do I do this?

Any news on new presets for Logics instruments?

I had heard that the relatively limited presets on all of Logics instruments were going
to be expanded upon. Is there any info on whether this has materialized or not. If
the new EXS instruments are cool that would be great but I sure would like to see more
presets on the other ones.
So far I am looking forward to getting my copy. I also wonder if installing on the same machine will remove 7.2 or will it be added to rather than over it?.

First of all, there are many new presets in most of the synths. The LP7 presets are often now found in a presets folder called "Legacy Presets" or something similar.
I did find a site with some cool Guitar Amp Pro presets. The site also has synth presets, midi drum files, etc. They're not free, but a lot of the GAP presets do sound good. I have no affiliation with the company making them.

Fine-tuning pitch for software instruments?

i recorded a song today, and all my instruments had been tuned according to my real piano, which, apparently, is a little bit flat. so, obviously, when i went to lay down a piano track with the software piano, it came out sharp. obviously auto-tuning everything but the piano would both sound bad and be dumb, so is there a way to fine-tune the pitch of the software piano?

No, GB is strictly limited to a 440 Hz tuning. What you can do is take your recorded real instrument tracks into an audio editor and correct their pitch so they match GB's instruments.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

Making new music for short films

Before I spend another 500 hours learning how to use Soundtrack Pro, I have a basic question:
Is making a full piece of music, a score with beginning, middle and end, possible with only the material supplied by the Soundtrack program, or do I need to add a musician? I haven't found anything in the program as yet that creates genuine melodies apart from the introductory riffs, etc.

It depends on your needs and standards. Technically, it's possible to do what you want with the loops provided. If there is a lack of melodic material with any length, it is possible to edit those riffs to create your own melodies. You can trim, copy, pitch and time shift things around, but at the end of the day it won't sound any better than having a live musician perform the parts. It will save you money, but you need to have the time.
Perhaps you can create your accompaniment beds using provided loops, hire a live musician to do melodic parts. This can sound pretty good.
Alternately, if you acquired STP in Logic Studio, you'll find Logic a much better composition tool.

Third party software instrument not outputting to right speaker?

Hi there. I know that third party support is not something I can expect to get much of here, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any suggestions anyway. I'm new to GarageBand, and am using the '8 bit' plugin from a Japanese band called YMCK (http://www.ymck.net/english/download/index.html). The plugin does seem a little buggy or incompatible with my system/GarageBand because I often get no sound and have to restart GarageBand, or (and I warn you if you try it) occasionally I'll get a loud, annoying tone until I restart the app as well.
Normally, however, it does what it's supposed to except for the fact that I am not getting any audio output from the right speaker for software instruments using this plugin, regardless of the panning I'm using. This is just kind of strange and I'm wondering if maybe there's something I'm missing, or perhaps someone else has used this plugin before (or would be willing to try it). Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Unable to install software instruments

Hi,
I recently got a new MacBook. I had GarageBand on a previous machine with all the instruments. At the time I remember downloading the instruments via Software Update.
But on my new machine the software instruments are greyed out.
When I click on an instrument I have 3 options:
1) Download Now
2) Download Later
3) Install from DVD
When I try
1) Download Now
Software update tells me GarageBand is up to date
Nothing happens. And if I click on the instrument it tells me it is currently being installed but that's not true.
2) Download Later
Nothing happens. I close GB, try software update and gets the same result as 1)
If I open GB and do software update I also get the same as 1)
3) Install from DVD
I insert install disk 2, as required and get the following
This update requires GarageBand version 4.0 or newer
My version is 4.1.2
I also bought iLife '08 for another machine. I tried with the iLife DVD without success.
I also tried to re-start my machine between each of the options.
I really need to install those extra instruments. This is driving me crazy.
Anyone here has the solution?

I recently bought iLife08 and installed only Garageband (on personalize). After installing i went to the app folder an launched GB, wich gave me this message:
The instrument library is invalid. GB expects a valid instrument library in /Library/Application Support/Garageband. Please choose a valid instrument library folder or quit and re-install GB.
1. I deleted and tried re-installing (got the same problem)
2. I deleted and the at Disk Utility repaired the main HD permissions and then re-installed (got the same problem)
It is very sad to buy original Apple software and get this kind of surprises when you get home. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

Hello, I got Logic pro 9 and grageband on both my mac and ipad but I was wondering if there's a way I can create the sound of hitting acustic guitar with your hand by using the software instrument. (You know how people use that sounds to kindda make a tempo)?

Ah.. then I suspect you just need to go to Logic's prefs/Audio and check CoreAudio...
It has been unchecked somehow...
Also.. as an aside.. Be careful not to create such large subject names in future when posting here.. They can cause issues with replying to posts in such threads.. due to a bug in the forum software.. so please keep them short and to the point...
