Making PAGES your default word processor

how do I make Pages my default word processor, so that when I open a .doc from my desktop it opens in Pages instead of Word??

glory,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You can set .doc files to open in Pages, and it’s surprisingly easy: just go to the Finder, single-click on any .doc file, then type command-I (Get Info). Click on the Open With... menu and select Pages (or navigate to Pages if it’s not in the menu). To make all .doc files open in Pages, click on the Change All button.

  • Pages as Default Word Processor for .doc Microsoft Word (Office) Files

In reading the system topics, there was a nice simple help solution. Find a .doc file. Do a Get Info (CMD-I) on the file and then under the File Options choose Pages, and indicate that this works for all .doc files.
BUT... Wunderkind Apple Engineers who put ease-of-use above everything, that is still about four steps harder than going into the PREFERENCES on either PAGES or Text Edit, or even having a centralized prefs in the System Preferences Panel that lets you pick and choose what APPs run what files.
How about sticking a check box into the APP to change it over? Or is that offending the powers-that-be in Redmond so badly that they might do to Office what they did to Internet Explorer on the Mac?

    Dennis:
    Lets clarify. In Pages:
    File>Preferences
Do you want Pages to be your default reader for:
    CHECKBOX - .doc (Word Files)
CHECKBOX - .txt, csv (Text Files)
Do you want Pages to automatically save a Word file of your document:
PULLDOWN: In addition to creating a pages file; (Indicate where page may be placed)
    Instead of creating a pages file;
And Yes, for the end-user who is new to Macs or new to computers in general, simplifying the handling of documents to a preference in the System controls would make sense. Then each App wouldn't have to do it, or could modify the central file if say Firefox wanted to be your browser/handler of choice, and asked you if you want it to be the primary control of that kind of content. Why shouldn't Pages be able to ask/set up the program easily so that the user can just get about the business of using the program? Your solution is nice, but it is still at a level that you have to be comfortable with working with files and GET INFO, which, while it doesn't phase you or me, would freak out my technophobic 14 year old daughter or my wife.

  • Default word processor??

How can I set Pages (or Word, for that matter) as the default word processor for opening attached documents in Mail? They always used to open automatically in Word, but someone has changed the settings somehow and now everything opens in TextEdit!!

Select the icon of one of these files
press cmd + I (⌘-I) to display the Show Info dialog.
choose a new parent program from the popup menu (Pages for instance)
click in the button entitled "Change All"
After that, every file of this kind will be open by the selected program.

  • Changing MS Office (test drive) from default word processor

Sorry for sucking up so much topic space, but I spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out how to change my legitimate MS word 2004 to the default word processor from the test drive version that comes on the MBP. Everytime I click on a MS word file I get an error message because I deleted the test drive version that was set as the default to open the word documents--how do i change this???
Any ideas? Seriously, I googled it and everything, it must be more simple than this!

    Hi seagonus,
If you have removed the test drive from your computer, and now have the full version of Office installed, highlight the file, click on the More Info tab to the right. A box will open that will have a drop down that says "open with" . In the list you will see the option for Microsoft Word (default). If this doesn't work, then you haven't truly removed the test drive, and that could be the problem. If so run the uninstaller again that comes in your MS Office folder under "Additional Tools". Good luck!

Using "Pages" as my word processor I can not print a Standard page.  Trying to print several copies of a single page gives me every thing parented back to back.  What do I do to fix this?  (Using iMac OS 10.9.1 and Canon iP4200 printer)

You have Duplexing turned on. Turn it off.
This is to do with your Printer Driver and has nothing to do with Pages.

  • How do I make Pages the default word processing program?

How do I make Pages the default word processing program, including Appleworks files?
I want any Appleworks file I open to open in Pages - is there a setting to make that happen?

    Hello ADW,
To change the default programme used to open a filetype, Get Info on one of the files you are looking to set, the change the Open With selection to Pages.
Then click on Use this application to open all documents like this one.
You will have to repeat this for each file type you want to use that way.
    Have a wonderful day!

  • Default word processor in OS X

It seems there is an app called TextEdit in OS X, so if I'm mostly just going to be emailing and typing up some occasional documents, does that mean I probably wouldn't need MS Word or Pages? i.e. I don't need Office or iWork to get a lot out of a Macbook, right?
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, C.M. Welcome to the Discussions.
While TextEdit can support tables, embedded images, lists, and import/export in Word format, the actual performance of these features is not, IMO, up to par with Word or other word processors. For example, table import and export is often problematic. There's little flexibility w.r.t. page numbering and other features one comes to expect from a true word processor. Therefore, what you mean by "occasional documents" is very important.
The following applications are frequently mentioned in discussions of MS Word alternatives. They each have their adherents and fans. In alphabetical order:
    • AppleWorks, essentially been superseded by Pages.
    • Mellel
    • Mariner Write
    • Nissius Writer Express
    • Pages, part of Apple's new iWork bundle.
    • Ulysses
Some additional "office suite" alternatives that are regularly mentioned include:
    • ThinkFree Office
    • NeoOffice: a free prototype of a port of OpenOffice to Mac OS X.
You can investigate other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
You must compare your requirements against the features of each package to determine the one that best meets your needs.
    Good luck!

  • How do I change the default word processor that Firefox opens my downloads in?

I deleted the one that I originally set (Works Word Processor), and can not open any documents until I change this setting to Microsoft Word. I get an error message saying "[file name] could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." Okay, but how?

  • Making Pages the Default

Is it possible to have Pages '09 serve as the default application to open documents? Whenever I receive a word document from someone and try to open it, it opens it in TextEdit. I would prefer that it opened it in Pages so that I could avoid the step of having to copy and paste into a Pages template. What am I missing?

    Ric,
Thanks for the advice. As soon as you mentioned it, it all came back to me. However, my initial thinking was that you could set it as a preference from either Pages or TextEdit preferences. Kind of like you do in Safari where you can set your web browser to be the default web browser, whether you want Safari, Firefox, Opera or whatever. When that option didn't present itself, I came here. Thanks for your answer. It solved the problem. As an aside, I was under the impression that MS Word users would be able to open attachments created in Pages. I know that you can open MS word docs in pages, but when I tried to send a file I created in pages to someone who uses a PC, he couldn't open it. Any insights?
    Thanks again.

  • I have Pages as my word processor, but when i reopened a document it was gone, no printing on the page. I;m using the latest Version 09 4.3

I have the Pages 2009, version 4.3 which is the newest update.  I have 2 documents(one is a copy) with tables and they contain my id and passwords I use.
Well i have been opening these documents for at least a few months.  Today I opened one of the documents and then closed it. I did not save, because i made no changes.  When i went back to open the document a few mins later.  The entire document was blank and also the kb's amount went down.  I tried making another table with the same format and went in and out and saved and opened, no problem.
So what happened to the "data" in my original file and copy file...Please help me...LOL  i do have a hard copy so i can make another table, but sometimes i forget to change the hard copy if i make 1 change or so in the computer file.
I mainly worry is this a security issue, does this possibly mean my files have been hacked.  I have tried other files and they are opening and closing fine, and no loss of data.
    Thanks for your help

I did find my file on the external drive with the data in it, so i made a copy of it...still would like to know what may have happened to the original file...

  • Changing default word processor

I currently have Think Free Office as my default processsor and would like to have my docs open in Word (which is installed on my mac) Cna't find where to do it. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi
Go to icon of file, right-click (Ctrl-click) & select Get info.
Go down to Open With & expand that.
You will find a drop down, click on that to choose the Application you want (if your App isn't mentioned, click other & navigate to App you want) & below that a Change All button.
Click on Change All &, in future, all files of that type will open in your chosen App.

  • Page Size in Page Versus Other Word Processors

    Question:
How can make the work area the size of the screen and make the control the size of the letters in the work area?
Background:(Useful if you don't understand the question only)
In word and in Mac ODT the while page is filled with the text but not page. I asked and read the manual. First I asked phone support about it, I called for another reason, and they said want the window to fill the computer screen no problem just pull it to the screen size unfortunately the text stays where it is not helpful. So I get the manual and its says no problem go to view and make it fit the with of the page. Now I have a giant letters and unreadable words.
In word they have a silly little thing call precent that allows the user to control both the size of the work area and the size of the image.
I have seen this question before but I have yet to see an answer. Is Mac ODT simply better then Pages. It seems better. It seems to have all the functions and more.
How can make the work area the size of the screen and make the control the size of the letters in the work area?

    1. What is "Mac ODT"?
Interesting, the idea seems to be to turn plain text into rich text and then fill the imageable area with rich text in a single column.
Rich text is referred to as rich text and ODF Open Document Format is referred to, correctly, as ODT Open Document Text, but on the incorrect assumption that ODT is platform dependent.
There is no idea of frames within which one flows plain text, or linking frames across a spread, or of a light table after the metaphor for pagination introduced by Adobe, Aldus, and Apple.
There is also no idea of applying composition by automatic markup or by manual markup to paragraphs and to parts of paragraphs.
There is also no idea of a mechanical printing forme with composition and illustration wedged in place by furniture, or of a photo-mechanical printing form with composition and illustration pasted into place on the printing forme that has become a sheet of film.
To start everyday endusers off from scratch, they should have a film to watch. Steven Fry, who does a wonderful Jeeves, recently did a program for the BBC on reconstructing the machine that made us what we are, the Gutenberg press.
Something like that is what it takes to understand the difference between the single column mode and the multiple column mode of Pages.
    Best,
    Henrik

  • Why Doesn't Making iTunes Your Default Media Player Always Work?

I bought a new hard drive on my desktop PC and I installed Windows 7 Pro on it.  I just installed iTunes version 10.6.1.7.  Everything that's in my itunes music folder seems to be playing fine.
When I inserted an mp3 audio file (from Dropbox)into my iTunes folder and double-clicked to play it, Windows Media Player opened and played it.  So I opened the Auto Play window in Windows Control Panel to make iTunes my default audio player.
I was able to set iTunes as my default player when I insert an audio CD into my PC.  iTues also plays songs that I download from the internet.  But when I attempted to select iTunes as my default player for audio files that I copied and pasted into the iTunes folder, it wasn't listed on the pulldown menu. The only choices listed on the pulldown menu are:
    Windows Media Player
Input Pictures & Video Using Dropbox
Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer
    Take No Action and
    Ask Me Every Time
How can I make iTunes my default media player for any audio file that I wish to play?

Right click mp3 file and select "Open with", then "Choose Default Program....."

  • Setting Pages as Main Word Processsor

I have iWork and Microsoft Office installed on my MacBook Pro. I've been having troubles with formatting in Word, but I don't want to delete Office just yet. Is there a way I can make Pages my default word processor? I know the option usually pops up when you first open the program, but that didn't happen. I'm not sure if the fact that Word was used previously has any impact on that. Can anyone tell me how to set Pages as default?
    Thank you in advance.

Find a .doc document on your hard drive. Select it and open the information window ( CMD + i ) then you can set "Open with" to "Pages". After doing so, hit "Change all...", that will always open documents with .doc extention in Pages. Maybe you have to do it with an .docx document too.
