Making Preview default PDF application

I had to install Adobe Reader to be able to view a document a while back. For some reason it wouldn't open in Preview. Unfortunately, when I installed it Adobe Reader became the default PDF application.
How do I go back to making the Preview the default PDF application?

Find and highlight a PDF file in the Finder. Click cmd-i to open Get Info.
Go to "Open With", and change the associated application from Adobe Reader to Preview. Click "Change All" to make this change for all PDF files.
You should see the file's icon change from Adobe to Preview to confirm this.

I am slowly 'de-programming' my PC brain after my recent purchase of a MacBook but...
I installed Adobe Reader and it automatically made itself default pdf reader - but I want Preview as Default PDF Reader and can't see how do do it.

Click on a pdf. Command i > Open with Preview > Change All.

  • How to disable pop up Make Adobe Reader my default PDF Application in registry

    Hi
I am wondering if there is a registry setting that can disable the pop-up Make Adobe Reader my default PDF Application ?
I have seen there is a setting under Edit\Preferences\General\"Tell me if Adobe Reader is not my default PDF Application" but cannot find a registry setting to disable this. This message pops up for some users in a remote desktop session host environment even though I have disabled the messages on the session hosts.
    Thanks,

    Hi Andrew_Dell,
Thank You for posting on the forums. Kindly try the below mentioned steps and check ,if it helps.
    1) launch adobe Reader
    2) Click on Edit>Preferences
    3)Go to General under Categories
    4) Click on "Select Default Pdf Handler"
    5) Choose adobe Reader
After performing this workflow, you might see an installation window. do not worry, it is just a new configuration of PDF handler being updated in the system.

  • Making preview default viewer for pdf files

    Hi,
On my macbook I have the preinstalled 'preview' software and I've recently installed Adobe reader. I much prefer using preview for some functions, but since I installed Adobe reader all pdf files automatically open in that program. I've noticed that when I choose the software to open file with Adobe is now listed as 'default'. Does anyone know how to make preview default rather than Adobe reader?

    Hi James,
Chose any PDF file you got already and select it ones ... now get info and a NEW window will open.
Now, somewhere ad the end of this NEW window you will see *Open with* select Preview and select ALL.
    Close the window ...
Now the next time you open a PDF it will be opening with Preview.
    Good luck ...

  • Hyperlinked files opens with Pro even though Reader is default PDF application

    Hello.
I have a Windows 2008 x64 Server that I have installed both Adobe Pro X and Adobe Reader X on. I have installed Pro first, then Reader, both with MST files, so that Reader is the default PDF viewer.  Reader shows as the default program and if you double click on a PDF document, Reader does indeed open.  However, if a hyperlink in Word or some other document points to a PDF file, Adobe Pro opens instead.  I need to make Reader the default application for all references to PDF files, but I need to keep Pro and Reader installed on the server at the same time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Could you try re-setting the default PDF handler to Adobe Reader 10.1.2 again and see if it helps. You can do the same by:
    1. Launching Reader.
    2. Goto Edit > Preferences > General
    3. Click on "Select Default PDF Handler" and chose Reader. If its set as Reader initially, try switching it to Acrobat and then back to Reader again, to remove any incorrect associations on your system.

That was always set correctly.  However, I did uninstall and reinstall Reader with a newer patch.  It seems to be the default for even embedded PDF files now.  The new problem is Reader now asks for the user to select a language before opening, but it does this only with embedded pdfs.  Double clicking on an actual pdf file opens Reader with no issues.

  • Terminal Server 2012 - Adobe Acrobat will not stay as the Default PDF Application

    Hello,
This worked flawlessly in the past and not sure what happened and now even thought the default app for handling pdf is Adobe Acrobat, when you double click on a document it opens on Adobe Reader. not all my users use Adobe Acrobat so i have to keep adobe reader on the server as well (for licensing ). simply right clicking on the file to "open with" is not an option, users need to be able to open the file from our accountancy software. I have already tried switching the default app and switching it back with no luck. any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Pretty sure that this was never tested but that being said... What was the order of installation?

  • Adobe Standard 8 as default PDF viewer, except in websites

    Hello
I am trying to get Adobe Standard 8 to deploy as the default application when dealing with PDFs, but have Adobe Reader X as the embedded PDF viewer in Internet Explorer.
I have been successful in getting both applications to install, and X be the default viewer in Internet Explorer, however I can't seem to get 8 to be the default PDF application for opening files on the desktop.  I have played around with a number of different combinations of customization opens through the avaliable tools, but I can't seem to get it to land on the specific configuration I'm looking for.
Is there a "quick" registry fix I can apply to impliment this scenario?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi,
What you're trying to do is unsupported. See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/874/cpsid_87424.html.
Only X and 9.x have that capability.

  • Making Preview (3.0.9) my default .pdf reader

Somewhere along the way Adobe Reader (now 8.1.2) seems to have taken over as my default .pdf reader. I can't find any way to change this so far. Since Preview is much faster I would like to have it be my default reader again. can I do this?
    Thanks,

Select any PDF file then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select Preview from the drop down menu then click on the Change All button.

  • Issues with setting "Maked Reader the default PDF viewer" with Adobe Customization Wizard XI

I am using the Adobe Customization Wizard XI. I have set the following options in the Adobe Customization Wizard.
    Personalization Options
Enabled the checkbox for Suppress display of End User License Agreement (EULA)
    Installation Options
Selected the radio button for Make Reader the default PDF viewer
Run Installation: selected radio button Silently(No Interface)
    Security
Enhanced Security Settings - Clicked drop down and set value to Disable
    Online Services and Features
    Checked Disable product updates
Checkd In Adobe Reader, disable Help > Purchase Adobe Acrobat
    Checked Disable Product Improvement Program
Checked Disable Viewing of PDF with Ads for Adobe PDF
Checked Disable all Adobe online services based workflows and entry points.
I have tried to deploy the MSI with MST via GPO and Command Line with no luck.  Every time i deploy via below methods, the same result occurs, all of the options are set correctly except the "Make Reader the default PDF viewer".  I know how to manually set this option via Windows or Adobe interfaces but i am looking to roll this out to the masses and would not want a bunch of service desk calls because a user clicks on an Adobe PDF file and it is not opening in Adobe Reader.
    GPO
    Create New Package Use AcroRead.msi
    Choose Advanced
Deployment Options - Click Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management.
Modifications - Select Transform file located in the folder of MSI
    Command Line.
Tried these options to try and apply "Make Reader the default PDF viewer"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" /qn
    msiexec /i "<path>\AcroRead.msi" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read /qn
Anyone know how to make this setting work with the Transform file, i sure would appreciate assistance on this issue.

When I installed Adobe CS onto my computer I set the default pdf viewer to be Adobe Acrobat. Id like to change it back to using preview since it opens much quicker but I cant seem to find where to change the setting. Can someone help?

Via the Finder select a PDF document and use Get Info for the file.
At Open With, select the Preview application via the pop-up window.
Select Change All below "Use this application to open all documents like this".

  • Set preview as default PDF viewer

    Hello,
I downloaded the update for Adobe Reader and during installation, it over-rode my choice to use Preview as my default PDF viewer in Safari.  I've searched high and low and tried to change this from both Safari's preferences and Adobe Reader's preferences.  Unfortunately, the section to "click" in Adobe is grayed out and will not allow me to deselect it.  I also tried uninstalling Adobe Reader, but that just caused Safari to not open any PDF documents.
Any thoughts on how to correct this are greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Eden

Right or control click a PDF file you already have on your hard drive then click Get Info.
Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
Choose Preview from the menu or navigate to the Applications folder and select Preview from there.
    Then click: Change All

  • Would like to re-establish Preview as default pdf program -

*Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • How can I regain Preview as my default PDF browser in Safari?

Hi, everyone...to make a long story short, I recently installed an update to Adobe Reader only to discover that it somehow took over my PDF viewing in Safari from Preview. I wanted to try and get Preview back as my default Safari PDF browser, but no luck. I trashed Reader and went into Library to trash the Adobe Internet plug-in as well. After I did that, I tried to reopen a PDF in Safari only to discover that I now can't open ANY PDF in Safari and I can't figure out how to make Preview the default reader again. I right-clicked a PDF in my computer and went under "Get Info" to try and change Preview to my default reader, but I can't figure out ANYTHING on how to regain my prior Preview default. I'm frustrated like CRAZY! I have Safari 5.1.5 and Preview 5.5.1. I would really appreciate some help on this!

    Hi,
I also installed Adobe Reader because an ebook I downloaded wouldn't open without it.
I then chose Adobe Reader as my default. When I later uninstalled it using the Trash Me app-which usually clears everything out-I couldn't get Preview back as the default.
I went to the "Library/Internet plug-ins" path and trashed the two Adobe Reader plug ins that were there. I used Secure Empty Trash, and then shut down completely and did not check the box to reopen any windows. Then I restarted the Mac.
I not only shut down Safari, I closed all applications and shut down the Mac completely being sure to uncheck the "relaunch with windows open" button. When I turned the Mac back on, I opened Safari and went to an online PDF that I had been trying to open previously to test the app. It opened this PDF using Preview and showed it in Safari.
I then tested using a PDF from my files and it opened in Preview.
    Quit Safari.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type of copy / paste:   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go then move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari to test.
