Making Quicktime Prefs stick across OD Accounts

OK,
so here is the scenario:
Quicktime 7.13's "enable flash" checkbox bug
caused all of our elem grade Flash based software
to stop working properly.
I went into the Admin account on one of 80 macs
managed by OD. I set the QT prefs to have the
checkbox enabled, and then closed out of the
Quicktime Prefs pane. I then went and made a copy of
that QT Prefs file, and copied down into
System/Library/User Template/English.local/Library/Prefs/
making sure to change back from admin to system before closing out
the Info panel, and then rebooted the machine.
Logged in as a newly created user, and the pref does stick.
But log in as a legacy OD user, and the pref does not stick,
it shows to be disabled.
What should I try next to get this pref to stick for all OD users
when they log in?
All Macs run 10.4.8, QT 7.13.
Server is OSX Tiger Server.

Answered my own question.
Here are the steps to fix this issue:
#1. Go log into the SERVER as admin.
#2. Set the "Enable Flash" setting in QT PREF Pane,
close out of the pref pane.
#3 Log out a admin, log back in as admin.
#4 Make a copy of the admin's QT prefs, place on desktop.
#5 Go into System/Library/Usr Templates/English.lproj/Library/Prefernces/
ON THE SERVER, and copy into the Preferences folder that copy of
the admin's QT Prefs you placed on the desktop earlier.
#6 Close out all windows, making sure to reset all prefs on files
and folders to system ownership.
Go to a client and test. If the setting doesn't stick on the managed
user account, then:
#1 Login to the machine as admin.
#2 Search for Managed Accounts folder, trash all contents of this folder.
#3 empty trash, then logout as admin
#4 log in as managed user account. Should apply now.

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

  • Sharing one iTunes library across multiple accounts on the same Mac

Hello, I've poked around at some of the posts dealing with sharing one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac but it seems like this can only be done if the libary is moved to a shared folder. I realize this can be done but I was trying to share it the way it is described in a post on Apple support (See link below.). That post seemed to imply that you don't have to move the library from its original location (owned by account A, e.g.), rather just make a couple preference changes in the accounts, use fast user switching and voila. That doesn't seem to work. So my question is this: Is the only way to share one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac to move it to a shared folder? I'm running 10.4.8 on an Intel iMac. Thanks in advance!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • How Can I Get My Ratings and Playlists to Mirror Across Multiple Accounts?

I'm sharing my music across two accounts on my Mac by placing my iTunes folder in the Shared folder, with an alias to that in each User's Music folder. It works fine, but the User of the other account would like the benefit of all my Playlists, and would especially like to have all My Ratings.
How can I get My Ratings and Playlists to mirror across multiple accounts? I would've thought simply importing the <iTunes Music Library.xml> file would do it, but since we're both using the same iTunes folder, we must already be using the same XML file, right?

The answer about where the ratings, etc. are stored is not an easy one, but the best I can figure is that it is a combination of the iTunes Music Library.xml, the iTunes Library file, and the com.apple.iTunes.plist. Apparently, the com.apple.iTunes.plist (in the under User/Library/Preferences) references the other two files. If you close iTunes, take the com.apple.iTunes.plist out of the user's Library/Preferences folder and then reopen iTunes, you will see that all the ratings, play counts, etc. (track information) will have disappeared. If you close iTunes, replace the com.apple.iTunes.plist, then reopen iTunes, the track information will be restored. The playlists, which are not part of the track information, seem to function independently of the com.apple.iTunes.plist, but if you share the whole iTunes folder across accounts, this should include the playlists. When I back up my iTunes library to another folder, I back up a copy of the current com.apple.iTunes.plist from my User/Library/Preference folder. I think that the way this works across multiple accounts is that the com.apple.iTunes.plist reads track information from the other files in the iTunes folder, because if you throw away the com.apple.iTunes.plist from one user account, it affects all the other user accounts sharing the same iTunes folder.

  • Best way to manage media (photos/music/videos) across user accounts in Lion?

Yesterday I clean installed Lion. I copied only that what I need from my TimeMachine backup. The apps were reinstalled as well. Now, I've set up iPhoto to link to my library in the Users>shared folder so that its available across all user accounts shared with my family members. Same is the case with iTunes library. But with integration with iCloud and @me.com or @mac.com accounts, I'm not sure how each one of us can have out own accounts configured in these libraries while they are shared. Keeping this in mind, what is the best way to share music, videos and photos across user accounts and yet have the apps... iTunes, iPhoto, etc, know our individual settings in out respective user accounts?
For iTunes should I just create a referenced library? Will that let me sync my photos and videos to my iPhone 4? If so, how?
For iPhoto I guess i''ll have to create separate libraries for each user account and then have one common for our shared photos. But thats just plain complicated for users who aren't tech savvy in my family.
Please advice before I create a mess with my media again!

Thanks for the idea, but that strategy introduces problems of its own. Now I have two iPods (a 5G and a touch) that sync with one library and an iPhone that syncs with another. This makes my life workable on the road, but at home, it means I have to change iTunes libraries when I sync different devices. It also means that, when I download new content, if I want to take it with me on my MBP, I have to synchronize it between two libraries. That sounds like an ugly situation.

  • I have two facebook accounts availible when I click the facebook icon in aperture it tries to log into the disabled account. It doesn't give me any option to continue making an album for the enabled account. Why?

I have two facebook accounts availible when I click the facebook icon in aperture it tries to log into the disabled account. It doesn't give me any option to continue making an album for the enabled account. Why?

I suppose I could delete it, but the whole point of multiple accounts is so I can post to either. One is mine, one is my wife's. If it is not enabled why would I need to log into it to post to my own account. The system has no problem associating existing albums with my account, I is only failing to allow me to choose only my account to create an new one. It is clearly designed to handle multiple accounts, but seems to have a bug directing it to ask for the password for a disabled account instead of allowing selection of and posting to the enabled one.

  • How to build query to give daily balance across bank accounts? (to then plot in a graph)

How would one build a query to give daily balance across bank accounts? (to then plot in a graph)
    Assumptions:
    * There is a table TRANSACTIONS which includes columns TRANS_DATE, AMOUNT and BANK_ID. It does NOT include a column for balance. So current balance for a bank account is the sum of the AMOUNTs for that BANK_ID for example. Balance on date XX will be the sum
of all AMOUNTS for that BANK_ID for all TRANS_DATE's prior and including the date XX.
    * There is not necessarily transactions on every day for each bank
    * Table BANKS which has BANK_ID and TITLE
Would like a query that gives: Supply StartDate and EndDate for the query:
    Date Bank1Balance Bank2Balance Bank3Balance TotalBalance
    1/1/15 $100 $200 $100 $400
    1/2/15 $200 $200 $100 $500
    etc

You'll find examples of queries for computing balances in various contexts in Balances.zip in my public databases folder at:
    https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=44CC60D7FEA42912&id=44CC60D7FEA42912!169
If you have difficulty opening the link copy its text (NB, not the link location) and paste it into your browser's address bar.
The queries in this little demo file return balances per transaction, however, whereas you appear to wish to return balances at close of business per day.  This can easily be done by means of a subquery which sums all transactions to date.  To return
balances for all dates regardless of whether or not any transactions have been undertaken on the day, an auxiliary calendar table can be introduced into the database to plug the gaps,  The Calendar.zip file in my same OneDrive folder has means of generating
    such a table.
With the introduction of an auxiliary calendar table into the database a query can then be written to return the balance per customer at close of business per day over the period 2009 - 2012 covered by the data in the Transactions table:
    SELECT CustomerID, Firstname, LastName, calDate,
       (SELECT SUM(TransactionAmount)
         FROM Transactions
         WHERE Transactions.CustomerID = Customers.CustomerID
         AND Transactions.TransactionDate <= Calendar.calDate) AS Balance
    FROM Calendar,Customers
WHERE calDate BETWEEN #2009-01-01# AND #2012-12-31#
    ORDER BY CustomerID, CalDate;
Rows for each customer/date are returned by means of the Cartesian product of the Calendar and Customers tables (the latter analogous to your Banks table), and the subquery returns the balance at close of each day by correlating the Transactions table with
the Customers and Calendar tables, returning the sum of all transactions per customer up to and including the date in question.  In this example credit and debit transactions are expressed as positive and negative values in a single column of course,
but where separate credit and debit columns are used its merely a case of summing (Credit-Debit), as done in some of the examples in my demo.
To return the data in a horizontal format per date I'd suggest the use of a report which returns one row per date, and within it a multi-column subreport in across-then down column layout, linking the subreport to the parent report on the date columns.

  • I don't seem to have the icloud icon on my ipad, making it difficult to access my account. Should it be there?

I don't seem to have the icloud icon on my ipad, making it difficult to access my account. Should it be there? I wonder if I deleted at some point, if so can I get it back? Just really want to check if the account is backing up successfully but really difficult to get on it through Apple, in fact near impossible.

If you want to see the current backup or document names stored on iCloud go to Settings > iCloud > Manage Storage.
If you want to view http://icloud.com on your iPad the same way as shown on a Mac use an iPad browser that allows changing its browser ID like the iCab browser.

  • How do we share music across Vista accounts?

I have Windows Vista. Each person in my family has their own account. We all want to have access to all our music, so I have put it in Public\Public Music.
When I copy a CD onto our PC, it is automatically saved in the My Music folder of the person who is logged on. So when other people log on, they don't have access to it. It is a real pain moving the music manually into the Public\Public Music directory. I have looked for a default directory for when CDs are copied into iTunes, without success.
Is there a default directory that I can set to Public\Public Music?
Is Public\Public Music the best way to share our music across multiple Vista users?
    Thanks

Is there a default directory that I can set to Public\Public Music?
iTunes preferences -> Advanced - iTunes Music folder location
Once that's set, all future imports and purchases will be saved in that location. Note that since iTunes has no folder-watching capability, each user other than the user who does the import or purchase will have to add the tracks to his/her iTunes library manually unless a third-party solution is used. Here are a couple of potential solutions from other developers:

  • Sharing media across user accounts on the same iMac

My partner and use the same iMac but we have to different user logins. We are often at the same events and like to use the clips, photos or footage taken by the other in our iMovie projects. Is there an easy way to access those media files while working in iMovie?
We both set our movie and photo folders to allow sharing but this doesn't seem to allow access when we try to import footage from one of those folders.
Of course we could always drag and drop files to the Public folder but that seems like a way to loose files or become very unorganized.

    Hello everyone
I would be interested in doing the same thing: let iMovie 8 store its media in the shared drive. Like that my wife and I (with two different logins) would have access to the same media and events.
As iMovie 8 doesn't let me chose where to store my media, I have copied the folder iMovie Events and iMove Project into the shared folder, then making aliases which I put in the account's place where the original folders were. Doesn't seem to work.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Address book access across difference accounts on one MAC

I can't figure out how to share the address book across the other accounts on the machine. Can someone please help, I am a recent convert to mac and i know it can't be that hard.
    Thanks in advance

If you want all users to access the same music, ratings, playlist, etc, do this.
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire iTunes folder from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
    3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Option key.
3 iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library*.
4 Select the *iTunes library file* in the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> *Add to library* and select the iTunes folder located in /Username/Music.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
7 Delete the iTunes folder in Username/Music
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to *Playlist is not the playlist* you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time. If you have Fast user switching enabled, the other users must quit iTunes in order for anyone else to use it.

  • Sharing an SD card or USB stick across the network

Why won't OSX allow me to share a USB drive or SD card across my network? I can plug it into my Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing, and add the card/stick/whatever as a Shared Folder, but the ' + - ' buttons allowing me to assign users to it are ghosted. Therefore it appears on my local network but it's inaccessible.
It's not the end of the world but it's not what I expected from "the world's most advanced desktop operating system". In fact it's something a PC could do at least three generations of Windows ago.
Am I missing something really obvious?
    Thanks

Try selecting a folder on that USB drive rather then the drive itself.

  • Making changes in a User's account, my admin's account not recognized

Just upgraded A Quicksilver 2002 G4 to Leopard from Panther.
Used Upgrade and everything worked amazingly well. I'm the admin, my wife & daughter are users.
All three of us can log in using the names and passwords we have always used
Only trouble is: when in a user account and making system preference changes and am consequently asked for an administrator name and password, it will not accept my administration name and password - says I've entered an incorrect user name & PW.
The Admin name is in this form: XXX, Xxxx
The password is an 8-digit alphanumeric string.
Could the comma-then-space of the Admin name be throwing off my ability to make the necessary System Preference changes?
I can't figure it out. Should I change my user name and password? Why is this happening?
    Any help appreciated.
    TIA

Are you trying to make these changes in your admin account or in one of the other standard accounts when logged into them? You cannot log into, say, your daughter's account and make changes to her account preferences without authenticating. You also cannot access her files and folders from your admin account.
On the other hand if you are trying to make all these changes while logged into your administrator account, then it is likely there's a problem with the keychain. You could try this:
Assuming that you are using a recent build of OS X, go to /Applications/Utilities and launch the app called Keychain Access. Go to the Window pulldown menu and select "Keychain First Aid". Enter your password, set the radio button to "Repair", and click "Start".

  • App duplication in iTunes library shared across two accounts on same iMac

I'm sharing media across two user accounts on a family iMac running Yosemite. The shared content is distributed across folders (Audiobooks, Music, Mobile Applications, etc.) inside Users/Shared/iTunes Music. Both accounts have read and write permissions, and family and home sharing are both turned on and linked to one primary Apple ID. In both accounts iTunes preferences point to the same shared folder. The problem: Updates to mobile applications in one account do not carry over to the other. After updating mobile apps for account A, when I switch to account B, I get the same list of apps awaiting updates. If I update for each account, I find duplicates for each updated app in the shared Mobile Applications folder.
I can avoid the duplication by control-clicking, in the Updates window of iTunes in account B, an app that has already been updated in account A. That will open a dialogue window saying the original file can't be found and asking if I'd like to locate it. When I do, the update disappears from the list in the Updates window. However this is a cumbersome process that I'd think iTunes would perform automatically if it were functioning properly. Has anyone encountered this issue and found a better solution?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
