Making RAID config of existing installed OSX server

Hi,
the situation for the moment is:
XServe with 1x60Gb disk and OSX Server with communigate, and a data disk 1x120Gb as backup drive.
Can I make a mirror of 2x 120Gb without reinstallation of the server?
eg:
- Make an image of the 60Gb harddisk
- Remove 60Gb disk and insert 2 x 120Gb disks
- make a RAID volume
- XServe in FW mode and put the image back on a 120Gb disk.
Will this work?
Thanks,
Bart

For a start, which version of Mac OS X Server.
If you have two 120GB disks my recommendation would be to set them up as a mirror, then use asr to replicate the OS partition onto the mirror. Then you can simply reboot off the mirror and you're done.

I installed OSX server 10.6 snow leopard on my IMAC, but still have choppy videos. can anyone tell me how to fix the problem

By your use of "still", did this problem exist before OS X Server was installed?  OS X Server itself has no particular linkages to video processing, beyond what OS X client provides.
Some details on the configuration might be useful.  Are these videos you're having issues with stored locally in files, or are these videos received over the network and played?  If the videos are local, have you tried playing the videos from a different disk?  If the video files are remote, can you download the videos and play them as a test?
What software are you using to play the videos?  QuickTime?  QuickTime X?  Does using VLC or another player work better?  There are some discussions of choppy videos around the forums, too.

  • Installing OSX Server on new Mac Pro Nehalem

Mac Pro received at the weekend. I have encountered a problem that I will need your assistance to resolve with installing OSX Server 10.5
    1. We have OSX Leopard Server on DVD - version 10.5 which won't install onto the Mac Pro.
    2. I have checked online and this is a known issue see here : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479
    3. I have followed these steps and I now have OSX Server 10.5.7 installed
    4. Problem is that without a bootable OSX Server DVD I cannot reinstall my timemachine backups via the utility on the DVD.
Please let me know how I can proceed as I cannot complete the migration without a bootable DVD.

Can Server be cloned the same as client version?
Can you clone client and upgrade the second OS to Server as your real bootable backup?
Why not restore from TimeMachine first, then upgrade to server? (Not a fan of TimeMachine though and prefer other methods).

  • Fresh install Mavericks, then install OSX Server 3.1.1, it doesn't work

    Using a mac mini.
    Wiped the hard drive clean.
    Installed Mavericks.
    Created 1 user.
Right away, went to the App Store and installed OSX Server.
    Ran the Server.app.
    It said everything went ok.
    It didn't.
Trying to see what could have gone wrong. I found the /Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Data is empty and the logs keep spamming how nothing can connect to the Postgre Database.
I will try to get more logs in here. However I am trying an install from the recovery partition at the moment.
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Latest firmware did resolve the issue !!

  • I have installed OSX server but I want to go back to Mountain Lion. How do I do this?

Can some one tell my how to remove OSX Server completely and return my system to the stand alone instalation of OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1, please?

OSX Server for Mountain Lion is just an additional service.
For installing it, you moved "Server.app" in your Application folder and then run it.
For removing it you get some software like "AppCleaner".
    You can download it HERE.
All you do now, move the "Server.app" to the "AppCleaner".
AppCleaner will list now all the files and folders that Server.app installed.
Restart your computer after you're done. There are most likely additional folder and configurations
but the main 'server' part should be gone. For everything else, look there:

  • After a Hard Disk failure in my MacMini Server (late 2009) I cannot install OSX Server 10.8

Relaced the Hard Disk (task undertaken by an Apple Store) and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and all went well.
Downloaded OSX Server 10.8 from the App Store and all seemed to install fine in that I get a success message.
BUT every time I try and run the Server app subsequently it starts again to `Set up your server` and does not give me the interface as described in the various guides. In other words it is repeating the setup process over and over again and I am going around and around in circles.
    Can anyone help?

  • Installing OSX Server on a windows server.

How can I install the OS X Server 10.5.4 on a HP Porliant DL380 G4 server?

You can't. It isn't supported, nor allowed by the license agreement which explicitly limits installation to Apple-branded hardware only.

  • OSX Server wont install from clean boot

    Hello
I cannot get my Mac Mini to install osx server 10.5.4 straight of the DVD.
Only way i got it working was by installing normal leopard and then running the upgrade from within.
Please can i be told to how to install straight of the disk?
(When i try normally, it just reboots into osx/or gets stuck in a reboot loop?

In this case, you will have to have [whatever version of Mac OS X client is appropriate for this particular box|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159] installed or reinstalled, then start the installation of Mac OS X Server per [HT3479|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479]
If you've an unbootable installation on your disk as is likely the case here, use Disk Utility in the installer to erase the disk, and then roll in the backup you made prior to starting the installation of Mac OS X Server or roll in the Mac OS X client software from the DVD that came with the box, and then follow the steps defined in [HT3479|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3479].
As for the proposed sequence, you likely won't need to update the 10.5 Mac OS X software here (once that software is reinstalled or reloaded or installed onto the box), and can probably go straight to the Mac OS X Server installation, and can then update Mac OS X Server to current.

  • Is there a way to have a wiki on osx server where users can be created at first logon? (for a semi-public wiki)

    Hello,
I am installing an osx server that will be primarly used as a wiki for collaboration.
Problem: there will be many users from various organisations -> creating users manually on the server is not an option.
Is there a way to have a page/something where users will login and the account will be created at first logon? (after being approved if possible).
I'd want my users to go to the wiki and do something like click a "new user" or "create account" button then fill a form. The account in th directory would be then auto magically created.
Does this feature already exist for osx server with the built-in wiki?

Just generate the TTS on a separate slide and then assign the audio file created in the LIbrary to whatever object you need.

  • What are the right DNS records to host more than one site on OSX Server (ML). My conf in Server.app looks right but one of my sites lands on the default server. Any suggestion?

I started using OSX Server on Mountain Lion a few days ago and it looks promising.
I do however measure my ignorance in DNS matters...
I defined two websites in addition to the the Default Server, so I have three names to deal with.
    For argument's sake
    - www.main.com is the default site
    - www.sitea.com is the first site
    - www.siteb.com is the second site
I define a virtual host for www.sitea.com and another for www.siteb.com
The resulting apache conf is what I would expect, I am pretty sure it is correct.
So I modified my DNS entries (they were A records) to point to my new OSX Server.
    My result is:
    - www.main.com shows the default site
    - www.sitea.com shows the first site
    - www.siteb.com shows...the default site
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

    Thanks MrHoffman!
My problem ended up being a name but not in the DNS!...In Apache.
Your information allowed me to rule out possibilities and zoom in to the culprit faster.
I just report here the conclusion hoping it can help someone else.
When I installed OSX Server last week, I had in mind to principally run siteb.
During the initial install, this is what I must have entered and then forgot about it.
Then I defined my virtual hosts sitea and siteb and realised my machine was called siteb and changed its name to main to avaid a name collision. At which time I remember OSX Server telling me that changing the name could have consequences...But it apparently went ok, and it did except for one little thing.
    The consequence was this:
in the main configuration file /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/http_server_app.conf the ServerName directive had remained siteb (instead of main). I manually updated it with TextEdit (could do vi from bash, its the same) and replaced siteb with main.
There is a way to detect it.
In Server.app, there is a "logs" panel, which displays all sorts of logs for everything including the websites.
Each website's logs are presented as "access" and "error" logs. The information was there, but I could not see it because the viewing window in remarkably small for so much information in raw text...
web logs are actually written to only two files in /var/log/apache2 (error.log and access.log)
I openned two bash windows and run tail -f on error.log in one and tail -f access.log in the other.
When I started the web service, apache threw a warning stating from mod_ssl saying that the certificate did not match the serve name...I the certificate was what I expected, I checked http_server_app.conf and found the ServerName directive that was not changed when I renamed my server...
Easily fixed when its found, but it can take a while to find.
BTW, I was using A DNS records for and it works, but I find your method of using CNAME records documents the administrator's intent better than with A records; I started to do the same. (A records a useful though, they can run a domain across multiple machines)
    Cheers mate!

  • Osx server installation

    Hello,
I am trying to install OSX Server on my Mac Mini, and it gives me the following error message:
"Fehler beim Aktivieren der Software. Es wurde ein Problem mit dem Server erkannt. Laden Sie den Server erneut aus dem App Store"
in English it should be something like this
"Error when activating the Software. A Probelm has been identified wit the Server. Download the Server again from the App Store".
However downbloading it again and again only gives the same error message again.
Does anyone know why I am getting this error and what I can do?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hi
You will see the 99 folder on the Server. It will be in the folder designated for Home Folder creation and automounting. It gets created if there are no home folders.
Is this the only server on the network?
What happens if you create a new user and home folder, one whose log in name and password does not exist anywhere else and is also not the clients local admin account. On the client click other and log in with that account. On logout does this users home folder disappear off the server?

  • OSX Server & Streaming

    Hi all,
Sorry if this post is a little long but I have some questions I hope you can help me with. I am a student with a massive interest in this area and want to learn/test as much as I can with out spending a fortune.
I currently have a 2.16 imac Intel Core Duo 2. I wish to purchase a copy of Mac OSX Server. The basic idea it to learn how to produce/test streaming media over the web and mobile phones. I also have an emac on my network (wireless) So her comes the stupid questions part (sorry)
    1. Can I install OSX Server over my current OSX or will I have to delete/backup it and start again from scratch?
    2. If I figure out how to stream some QT Video will the emac on my network be able to see it and more importantly will computers outside of my network be able to view the content with my current setup. I guess I would need a server???
    3. Is it possible to stream to a mobile phone (for testing) or would I need to be working with a telco for this to happen? ie could I send a link to the phone that would access the internet and play it from that link?
    4. What preperation can I start now before my copy of OSX Server arrives. Do I need certain codecs, open ports etc
    and finally
    5. Is it possible to purchase training videos/ audio books on this subject and OSX Server management? I can learn very quickly when I see the process in front of me but Im not so hot with books.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I welcome any suggestions or help.
    Regards

Dave is right about trying out Darwin Streaming Server. It's a very easy (and free) to install package. It's good for getting an idea of what the server can do.
    1. Can I install OSX Server over my current OSX or
will I have to delete/backup it and start again from
    scratch?
You'd need a fresh install. Although OS X Server has a lot in common with regular OS X, there are enough differences to make it a bad idea to install one over the top of the other. The installer will force you to archive and install or erase.
    2. If I figure out how to stream some QT Video will
the emac on my network be able to see it and more
importantly will computers outside of my network be
able to view the content with my current setup. I
guess I would need a server???
The streaming server is pretty easy to set-up. I run one from my iMac G5 to stream movies around my house. If you want it to be reachable from outside your network, you'll need to look at your router config and perhaps contact your ISP. I allow outside access to my streaming server by setting up port forwarding on my router.
    3. Is it possible to stream to a mobile phone (for
testing) or would I need to be working with a telco
for this to happen? ie could I send a link to the
phone that would access the internet and play it from
    that link?
No idea on this to be honest. I assume that if the phone supports rtsp and can play QuickTime Movies then it'd work.
    4. What preperation can I start now before my copy of
OSX Server arrives. Do I need certain codecs, open
    ports etc
All of the server documentation is available on the Apple site. Best thing would be to go there and download the streaming server manual.
    http://www.apple.com/server/documentation/
    and finally
    5. Is it possible to purchase training videos/ audio
books on this subject and OSX Server management? I
can learn very quickly when I see the process in
front of me but Im not so hot with books.
Sorry, don't know about this one.
Good luck with the streaming server. It's a pretty nice system to set-up, I really would recommend you taking a look at the Darwin Streaming Server. It's free and has almost the same functionality as the OS X Server version. QT Broadcaster is the only thing that's missing I think and the admin tools aren't quite as advanced.
You might want to look at QuickTime Pro as well. It's pretty cheap and has some nice tools for preparing files for streaming.

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.
