Making Realistic Styles??

I am looking to make realistic layer styles like the images attached. I need help as all my tries have not gone to well. I have tried making bump maps and textures but nothing seemd to work. I know I have seen the styles before so it can be done. Can someone help me with this or create them and I will pay for the work. Thanks in advance

Couple of options for this real easy effect. There is no simple solution for a realistic effect, but here are a couple of 2 - 3 step processes.
BOTH OPTIONS NEED TO BE PERFORMED IN RGB. Remember to save your original images with a different name.
First Option - Displacement Map:
1.) Create a greyscale photoshop document the same size (pixel depth and dimensions) as your file you're trying to alter with the texture you're trying to use. This needs to be a texture map only in black and white. Higher contrast, the higher the distortion.
2.) Go under Filter > Distort > Displace in Photoshop, and load the texture and apply it. This will distort the image visually shifting pixels.
3.) Load the greyscale image back into photoshop and drag it into your document(using the move tool) as a new layer and change the blending mode to "multiply". (This will add the shading to make it look correct.) You can blur it to make it more or less dramatic.
Second option - Lighting Effects:
1.) Create a new channel with the texture you're trying to use in greyscale. This can be an alpha channel.
2.) Make the layer you're going to apply the effect to "float" by double-clicking on it if it is a background layer. Then convert the layer to a smart object in the layers palette. (this is important if you want to make changes)
3.) Go under Filter > Render > Lighting effects and apply the channel you created for the texture as a "texture channel" at the bottom.
Now with lighting effects, it will distort the image and cast a shadow based on the texture. It will take a little playing around with. I would recommend turning down some of the plastic effects and metal effects if you're going for a textile look.
You can of course combine both of these options as well. substituting the multiply layer of option 1 for the lighting effects of option 2.

• Making a style change fonts after a tab

I'm wanting to setup a style that will make everything Goudy Old Style and then anywhere there is a tab put in a leader and change the type after the tab to Goudy Extra Bold. I've everything working except I don't know how to make it apply a change in style when it sees a tab.

This is Nested Styles.
Create a Charater style of Goudy Extra Bold.
In your paragraph style, select drop caps and nested styles
In the nested styles list-- None / up to / one / tab character
Bold style / up to / forced line break.

• Making realistic foam from photo

Hi,
I've been taking and prepping photos of a client's parts. For the most part things have been going fine. I use pen tool for tought - but round or curved - objects and for other objects I have a series of auto actions that clean them up quite nicely and quickly. For example see before and after below of an object I did. Photos were taken with Nikon D70:
I've now run into a really tough one and it's foam. I told my wife to take photos of them with black background so it's more contrasty. But I just can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the black so the result looks "foamy." Evidently, the pen tool just won't work because lines there are twoo straight. Below is example of photo and I now have about 6 photos similar with more to come. Feel free to try out whatever you recommend doing it. The photo below is reduced verison to keep the file size here small:
Any suggestion is appreciated and I hope whatever it is you suggest is fast (i.e., easy) to do :-)
Thanks,
Deaf Guy

I think using a gray background would have been better. There would still be good contrast to separate the foam from the background any fringe areas halos would be neutral gray and be easer to blend in then the darker blacker ones. I did a couple of quick tries one using the quick selection tool and refine edge to mask the foam and a second using a channel mask. Did not like what I produced.

• Making DVD style navigation menus for use in PC files

Hi There
I basically need some help with the above! I want to make a film, with menus to start with, which can naviagte to the desired chapter when seleceted. When I put the menu overlays on, instead of exporting to DVD i choose PC files, but only the film itself is saved, not the graphics or menus. Is there a way this can be done?
Many thanks in advance

Once you've added your menus and navigation, you need to Share/To Disc to burn a DVD. (You can also elect to burn the files to a folder on your hard drive.)
Are you not trying to create a DVD?
I'm not sure of any other way to make your video navigable by menus.
Although, as I explain in my books, in version 9, you can Share to a WebDVD -- which creates a web site that you can navigate through menus, like a DVD.

• Table of Contents based on Character Style?

Trying to do an annotated table of contents containing captions of all photos in a book, followed by verbose descriptions. Purpose is to avoid cluttering pages bearing the photos, which will have only a brief caption is followed by the name of the owner of the object in the caption, in the same paragraph.
Book will include a listing of the captions in page order (i.e., table of contents) without the owner names, followed by verbose descriptions. Can I get around this by making character styles for each (caption, owner, respectively), and create a TOC based one character style? If not, can I configure the para. style of the caption to omit the line-feed, and base the TOC on that?
Plan is then manually to add descriptions to each TOC entry, immediately following captions. Will that stay intact, if any subsequent photo locations are changed?

Jack wrote:
OK, have done that, and all required content is now showing up in the TOC.
I'm glad you managed to sort that out.
Is it possible to omit the line breaks between elements referring to the same page?
Hmmm...the thing is...a paragraph is a paragraph is a paragraph. By nature, it breaks to the next line. There are ways to fake it but none (that I can think of) which will hold up to an automated TOC update. Maybe someone else will come along with a trick I don't know about.
So then, for the moment let's assume the only way to get the caption and the description into the same TOC paragraph is to put them in the same paragraph on the document page. Also still assuming I truly understand the end-result you want; here's how I would do it:
If you set the separate-but-threaded caption and description frames as I first proposed, you'll need to go back and take out the paragraph break between the caption and the description. It will have to be replaced by a simple "frame break" which will push the description (now the same paragraph and paragraph style as the caption), into its own hidden frame as before.If, in the TOC, you want the caption and the description to have differing formatting, it would also be useful to insert (between the caption and the description on the document page) an End Nested Style Here character before that frame break. (If the caption and the description can be formatted identically, you won't need this step, and they can simply be formatted by your simple TOC Entry Style paragraph style.)
All above can be done using Find/Change. Find: End of Paragraph (^p). Change to: End Nested Style Here (^h) Frame Break (^R). So here's what it looks like in the dialog.
If the captions and descriptions are the only text in your document, you probably get away with Change All, otherwise it may be best to step through finding and changing one instance at a time.
Now if you update your TOC, the descriptions should be pulled up into the same paragraph as the captions.
Take advantage of the Nested Style possibility to vary the formatting of the caption and description by adding a nested style to your TOC Entry Style. Set it to style the description portion of the entry. Then add a Nested Style and set a Character Style to format the caption portion of the entry... "through 1 End Nested Style Character".

• Font works in one Document but not the other

OK so we have been having trouble with this one font for a while now. For some strange reason it will download onto my bosses computer but it won't load onto mine. I have had some help to try to download it on my computer, which we thought was successful. We have one document that will open in InDesign correctly with out me needing to change the font so it will work. But I tried to create a new document with it today but it can't find it. I have tried to making paragraph styles for each one and then adding them to the library I use, but that did not work.
I am running a Mac with OS 10.8.3 and I am using CS6. Also this font file kept telling me there was serious problems with them when I try to install them into Font Book.

InDesign has a feature called Document Installed Fonts which allows a file to use fonts not installed on your system if they are contained in a folder named Document Fonts appearing in the same folder as the .indd file. That might explain why you can open an older file, but not use the font in a new file.
What is the name, and type, of the font?

• Topics with Two Columns, and ?s about Margins

I've been searching all over and can't quite get the answers I need. I have a robohelp project which will solely be for written documentation. Some of the topics within this project I would like two have two columns, the left column will just have headings and the right side will have content. I did accomplish this by making a table, however I can't remove the borders. I also tried another way by using this, which works great but when I made printed documentation it didn't make it look like I have on my screen (printed the headings all together then the content on later pages).
#container2 {     clear: left;     float: left;     width: 100%;     overflow: hidden; } #container1 {     float: left;     width: 100%;     position: relative;     right: 50%; } #col1 {     float: left;     width: 50%;     position: relative;     overflow: hidden; } #col2 {     float: left;     width: 50%;     position: relative;     overflow: hidden; }
So I guess I have a few questions to try and make this project go smoothly. Since I will only be using this project for written documentation, what would be the best way to make sure that each topic I am working on will print the way I want it to (margins, etc.)? Is there a good way to deal with my two column issue? Would making a style that indents the text be a good solution?

You may also want to check out CSS columns. That will allow you to work without using tables and let the browser to take care of the rest. See: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css3_multiple_columns.asp

• Fireworks instead of Illustrator?

Hi, we've been using Illustrator CS3 here for web page mock-ups for a while now. It initially was a bit buggy, but things have gotten better. Most people don't realize it has the same slicing capabilities of Image Ready. But we really use style sheets and swatches to keep things really consistent throughout our layouts.
But our current developer is not familiar with Illustrator and would prefer Fireworks or (yikes) Photoshop to receive comps from us. As there will be very minimal images exported from these designs (most everything will be styled with CSS), we would really like to avoid using Photoshop as it is not vector/object based and makes doing full page design layouts way more complicated than it needs to be.
So that kind of leaves Fireworks. I do have experience with Fireworks, starting with v.2 or v.3 a LONG time ago. But I haven't used it in a couple years now that we've been using Illustrator. So I downloaded the latest version (CS4) to give it a try and see how things have progressed. So far I'm not too impressed.
A couple questions/concerns we have about Fireworks:
- My first reaction was how sluggish it is. Then I read a post here about it being really bad on a Mac. Are we pretty much stuck here (we're a Mac-based design studio)?
- One feature I always hated, all the way back to early Fireworks, was the silly swatches panel. Are there any extensions available (even commercially) that closer emulate Illustrator or InDesign's swatches pallettes (ie - you can see exactly what name or value a swatch is instead of guessing at a tiny square; if you select an object, it's swatch will be highlighted so you know which is being used; and you can quickly edit a swatch to change colors sitewide)?
- To keep all of our typography consistent and easy-to-update we're using paragraph styles in Illustrator. I tried making a 'style' for some selected type in FW, but it just doesn't seem to be applying when I try to style another chunk of type. And I see no easy way to see what parameters are attached to the style or how to change something on it quickly (say you wanted all your 'H3 Headlines' to be 1px larger and red for instance). Any options or extensions here??
Thanks! All our developer really needs to get from these are general sizes and spacing of objects, exact colors being used, and all typographical style information so he can build the CMS template we need. Any images needed can be done one-off in Photoshop if necessary, and there won't be too many. All layout/design will be done with CSS, which can be easily and accurately hand-coded.

Hi,
I have designs sent to me that were done in Illustrator, and I just slice it
up in Fireworks, it shouldnt be a problem you working in Illustrator.

• Viewing Stylesheet in Design view

HI,
Two of us are working on the same website, sharing the same files. In our site set up we both are using the same shared drive with the files.
When I view a page in design view it looks fine. When the other person views the page in design view its as if the view cannot see the style sheet so its just a long list of of text and images. We are both using Dreamweaver CS3 vers 9. Is there something in the setting for Dreamweaver that we are not setting to view the style sheet correctly?

Sorry been gone. Thanks for you help along the way.
OK I think what you want is Q:\Website - New SNR Mock Site\ That is what it is for both us except for the drive letter since we are in a shared drive system and it just depends on how many drives we have been assigned.
Yes he does have "Preview with Temp Files" enabled.
Once again the reason we are using root relative links, is not some we decided on. We are using a template from our university that we are required to use. This area when we point to a style sheet is in part of the template that we cannot edit. We are pulling the style sheets to our server daily to grab any updates that the university IT group is making to style sheets. Not something we can control. But if you have a suggestion on how they should be coding this, any thing would be great. That group is in the middle of a new template design process.
A side note. When my colleague was working another site using the same templates he started having this problem. We were told by the IT group to always download a copy of the UCOMM folder to our working area of a website so that Dreamweaver could properly display the design. Even though we never put these files back to the server. Its only for viewing on our local site. COuld it be that somehow Dreamweaver is trying to find UCOMM from somewhere else, that it no longer exists?

• Using a font embedded swf in mxml

Hello,
We need to load in fonts at runtime due to localization needs. I've got this working in an AS3 project in Flex by embedding the font in a class and then loading that swf into another class and registering the font.
What I need now is to be able to use that font class in MXML components like a spark label. I can't seem to get it to work though. I've tried referencing the swf in a style sheet, then making a style class in the CSS using that font like this:
/* Embed.css */
@font-face {
src: url("_Arial.swf");
fontFamily: "_Arial";
.genericTextArial
font-family: "_Arial";
fontSize: 40;
color: #000000;
Then in the MXML I have this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx" minWidth="955" minHeight="600">
<fx:Style source="Embed.css"/>
<s:Label text="This should display my embedded text." width="100%" styleName="genericTextArial"/>
</s:Application>
However I can't seem to get it to render. I've also tried the method of embedding the font in a text field in Flash Professional and loading in that swf and it doesn't work either. Am I missing a parameter or just going about this the wrong way?

Thank you, that worked! I actually didn't know exactly how to do that at first but I found this great blog post that explains it:

• Load Images

Hello
Could you please assist me with such issue
I am using a Canvas object like a container for images (Image
class). My application loads 500-1000 images (tiles) dynamically
and then displays them. Everything works fine but the memory grows
up to 300Mb.
Here is a code:
private function GetLoop(layer:String):void {
var canvas:Canvas = new Canvas();
for(var i:Number = 0; i < curFrames; i++) {
var img:Image = new Image();
img.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, OnImageLoaded);
img.load(urlReq);
canvas.addChild(img);
}

Matlus,
I have not tried sharing with bitmaps or bitmapData objects
yet. I have done sharing with simple XML data, URLLoader data, and
DisplayObjects. The concept should basically be the same, though.
My only hesitation is that bitmaps are terra incognito for me.
However, if I were to try it, I would make a static bitmap
data variable for some custom AS class that is similar to the
SWFLoader or Image class (or even extends from them). Anyway, I
will assume I have a class that displays a bitmap. I may have more
than one of these classes on the screen at a time. The class will
extend from a regular UIComponent and contain a Bitmap instance.
However, the class will have one globally accessable (static)
BitmapData class instance. Use a class initialization technique
similar to that used when making custom styles to call a method the
first time any instance of this class in instantiated. In that
method set up your BitmapData class instance. In the regular
instance constructor (or createChildren method or wherever), set
the Bitmap instance's bitmapData reference to the static class
reference. That should do it. You can set filters independently and
show the same image on screen multiple times (hopefully) without
getting tons of redundant bitmap data instances the way (I suspect)
you do if you try the same thing with Image or SWFLoader.
Like I said, I do this with ComboBox dataProviders where the
dataProvider is taken from an external XML but I have multiple
instances of the same ComboBox/dataProvider in one application
(although I have the added incentive because the XML is furthermore
taken from the server and I don't want to call the server EVERY
time a combobox appears--but that's neither here nor there).
Anyway, though, like I said, the same priniciple should apply here
as well.
And if you want to dynamically apply the same technique for
any number of bitmap data (such that any one bitmap data is only
loaded once and then never again), it shouldn't be too big a leap
to set up a Dictionary (or just a regular array if you like) and
then load the images from there to the appropriate instances based
on some key value.
I'm sorry I don't have any code worked out. But if you 're
interested (and what I described above makes sense), then give it a
whirl. If you have problems, post them.

• Kindle plugin crashes and bugs

Hello,
I've been using Indesign since 2001 for publishing Bibles (large Books of 700+ pages).
Recently, I started using the Kindle plugin for CS4. The first Kindle Book was successful, but I have some bugs to report.
Just about every time I start the export to Kindle process, the export crashes and I get a popup saying "Object invalid" or "not an Object". I restart the export, and it runs. Go figure.
Sometimes, the export will halt part way through the process, and popup the same message(s) about an invalid object.
If this doesn't happen, the resulting .mobi file is good and usable. Although I have found that any indented text (such as a Table of Contents [just text not hyperlinked or anything]) with 3 levels of indentation will not line up correctly in the outputted file; and anything I do to correct it doesn't seem to work; and the result will look different in different Kindle devices, according to the Kindle emulator tool.
If these problems are ignored and an output .mobi file can be generated, the Kindle file is pretty good. It is much better quality than a comparable .mobi file generated starting with Word documents, then using the Amazon emulator tool to convert it to .mobi. So kudos to Adobe guys, your product is performing better than the alternative, but there are still warts.
The 2nd problem I am having currently, is that I have another Bible version that I have prepared for exporting to Kindle format, using identical everything to the previous Bible version. There are 40 individual documents tied together by a "Book", relatively small sizes. Every time I have tried to export this Book to Kindle, it crashes, and I have no idea why. I tried "save as" for every document, so each one would be a clean file.
I just did another export, and I got the following error popup that you can see here. Please help if you can. Thanks

I think I figured out what was wrong.
I was using a Book with 40 different documents tied together into a single Book.
I created a new document and "repoured" the content from the single documents into the new single document with a lot more pages. After adding several of the single doc contents, I did a test run to see if the old bugs would should up, and not a single one did.
I still need to repour all of the content into the new single document and retest, but I've got a feeling that this was the problem. It appears that the Kindle plugin works fine with single docs, but not with Books and a bunch or even a few single docs tied together. That creates crashes, and it always results in that error that you see in the photo above.
That should help you all to run down the source of the problem.
I liked the Book w/ single docs, because I needed to create a TOC with each single doc. If they're all together when creating the TOC, unless you do a lot of extra work making special styles for each TOC, it all globs together and that's not what was desired.
So anyway, I hope this helps. I'll post again, once I get it all combined tomorrow and rerun the export, and let you know the results.

Using Application Express 3.1.0.00.32
I have been searching for a way to change the color of the title bar for the interactive reports. The only thing I have been able to find is a description on how to change the background color of the body. Please advise if there is a way, thanks.

Try copying/pasting the above into the same setting and check that it does, indeed, turn the background red.Andy
Don't know if this is relevant to any problem the OP may have been having, but it doesn't in the versions of Webkit powering Safari 3.1 and Google Chrome (although it does in the latest Webkit nightly build). The element named above was found in a context where it is not allowed. This could mean that you have incorrectly nested elements -- such as a "style" element in the "body" section instead of inside "head" -- or two elements that overlap (which is not allowed).>
css styling is available wherever it appears on the pageHats off to the browser makers for making <style> work where they don't have to, but I won't be relying on this.

• Grey out rows in ALV

Hi All,
Following is my requirement.
1. I will have a ALV grid output.
2. By selecting few records, user can click on the push button provided in appilcation tool bar
3. Once he clicks on the push button, the selected records should be greyed out(user can't select them again)
How to achieve this in ALV. I have tried some of the methods related to cell tab styles but none of them worked.
Thanks in advance....

Hello,
You wrote, that you tried to use the cellstyles to grey the rows, but id didn't work. Recently I did gray some rows in my report (using ALV OO cl_gui_alv_grid), so I know it works.
Additionaly to making cell styles (I assume you know how to do this) for each cell in the row you want to grey, you must do two things more :
1. Provide information in your alv layout structure (it is not field catalog) - structure lvc_s_layo, like below
DATA: gs_layout         TYPE lvc_s_layo.
gs_layout-stylefname = 'CELLSTYLES'.
2. After specifying which cells you want to grey, you have to refresh table display.
Then it works.
