Making Recording in Studio sound like it was recorded live in a hall

Hi all,
I have a problem. My recordings sound too good!! What I mean is that there is not the feeling of it being in a hall, because what I call the "sound of the dead air" is missing. There is not the feeling of space in the silent bits of the recording. Any ideas or is there a plug-in for this?
Thanks,
Graham

Some ideas:-
You could mix in some noise, you could record some room tone and mix that in, you could use a small amount of room reverb or ambience on your mix or individual tracks, you could even send the mix out into a real room and mic up the speakers (set up the mics at the back of the room, you want the ambient signal, not the dry signal) and mix some of that back into your mix to taste (this can be a great way to gel a fake drum track together a bit more).
Or just record more real, acoustic instruments in general to avoid that stagnant, 100% digital in-the-box sterile vibe.

take it back asap.  If it wasn't doing it before they cleaned the fans, they may have accidentally done something that is causing this behavior.

my macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas? It's really worrying me because I haven't had it for up tp 2months and last week everytime I switch it on it makes sooo much noise. And I treat like an egg so I don't understand whats going on.

    Hey,
My friend had a very similar issue to yours. The issue came down to the pins of the MagSafe not meeting with the MacBook perfectly causing the lights and the transfer of power to be wacko. I'm not sure if this is issue that your experiencing, but its worth checking out the pins and the MagSafe area on your MacBook for debris.

If that is all clear, then I would suggest you call AppleCare or take it in to an Apple Store to have it checked out.

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

  • Making Garageband songs not sound like Garageband songs

Is there a trick to making GBand songs sound like 'normal' songs? When I play songs I've created in GBand on my car stereo, it sounds awful compared to 'real' music. I've played around with the Master Tracks, but nothing seems to work well. I want my music to envelope/surround me, not sound like I'm tinkering around with a cheap keyboard. Thanks.

    Well....
This isn't what you want to hear, but GB is only as good as the person using it. I have some friends that are trained audio engineers and they can make GB sound as good as anything. I do a pretty good job too. LOL!
What I would like to emphasize if you are looking for pro sounding recordings:
    -get decent monitors,
-learn to use your microphones AND the space/room you are recording in,
-read up on the art of mixing,
-learn what a compressor does and familiarize yourself with them,
-practice mixing other's songs (Nine Inch Nails has 2 of their songs as free GB downloads for mixing)
-read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice, read and practice,
and that about covers it. Garageband is just a tool. You have to make it work.
Good luck and welcome to the forum! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Lots of smart people here.

  • Why is my iPad making wired noises? Sounds like it muffled.

MMy iPad suddenly has started making a muffled nois and is very loud?

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

  • My MacBook (08) just started making a noise that sounds like a fan...

It's like the computer is working really hard to function. Programs are also running slowly. I checked the Auto Update, and everything is up-to-date. Is it on its last legs?

Yes, I know, but it works as always, there is nothing to make it better; cf Perian.
iStat Pro does not quite work "as always" with newer systems.
For one thing, it may report inaccurate temperatures (& possibly fan speeds), depending on the Mac model it is running on. (For instance, on my system, it tells me the ambient temperature is around 54° F in a room that is actually about 77°.)
The problem is basically that iStat Pro gets temperature & fan speed info by querying the SMC subsystem. Apple has apparently changed the query/response protocols or the SMC hardware itself, so this no longer works as the utility expects.
And Banjo is not as "safe" and digs too deep with core kexts.
Banjo is the new name for the same company that developed iStat Pro & the original & newer iStat Menus programs. My guess is that the latest version of iStat Menus is just as safe to use as the earlier ones.
However, I won't use it for the same reason I won't use MenuMeters: both rely on MenuCracker, a hack to work around Apple's restriction of menu extras to ones Apple develops & distributes as part of the OS itself. Developers are specifically told to use 'Status Items' for their menu bar add-ons, which offer some but not all of the same functionality as menu extras, & do not risk destabilizing the OS or compromising its security.

  • Laptop sounds like a chainsaw

My laptop makes like a wierd grinding noise. I took it in for repair  less than a week ago and the fan was replaced. However after getting it back it has returned to its usual grinding noise . It will make the same noise every couple of seconds. I have recorded a video of the sound and uploaded it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfkICMGyxH8, could it be a problem with the hardrive as I have read somewhere else, please help

I agree, that isn't coming from the Hard Drive, I've never heard a hard drive make a sound like that.  When you got it back from repair did it make that sound right away or did it take a while?  Is it making the exact same sound that it was making before you brought it in?  Where was it that you got it repaird at?  I ask because it sounds like it is coming from the fan, but if it was just replaced, then there is something that the fan is hitting or something, but I doubt that.  Almost sounds as if a bearing in the fan is gone and that is what all that noise is about.  Just making sure that they actually replaced it!

  • Logic Pro wanting to sound like 1958

I am recording a Rock Steady/Ska band that I play in. These will just be live 1 take recordings in our rehearsal space. I am treating the room with duvets very heavily and I will play around with the many mikes we have going through my Apogee Ensemble.
The Question. Any suggestions on how to get it to sound like it was recorded sometime in the late 50's or early 60's. The band does a great job already with their gear and exceptional playing but I was just wondering if there was a good mix of plugs I could use.
    Thanks
    -Allan

I've had a good success with recording a Rockabilly band wanting to make it sound authentic, but using just one mic (AKG C12VR) set to OMNI in front of the lead singer, with the band and amplifiers positioned around the studio behind him. And nothing else. Just light eq, compression, plate reverb and slap delay.
Surprisingly enough it gives exactly the right kind of sound, the double bass sounded distant and slappy, the drums sounded thin and roomy, the vocals sounded hugely above the mix. It all sounded like it was band playing in a room together in mono with loads of echo. Just the way they like it! Compared to the cd's they brought in to reference to, old 50's rock n roll and rockabilly it sounded just right! Of course you need more confidence in what you're doing to take this route. You need to know from the get go, that it's the right way to go. But when you see the band smile from ear to ear and say "FINALLY THE SOUND!" you know it's the right move and putting up more mics would be a mistake.
If it's your band then you have enough room to experiment to try something like this and it not matter too much if it doesn't come out right the first time around.
Personally if I wanted to make something that sounded like authentic ska, I'd look for a good condition 4-8 channel tape machine and use that, throw up 6 mics, ribbons where possible (as mentioned before), mix it quite roughly, the bounce it back and forth a bit, while doing some over dubs and it'll become nicely saturated and compressed. It'll cost about £300 for a decent tape machine and a load of tape, not much compared to your Ensemble!!!

  • My Macbook is 4 months old and is making a constant clicking sound. Will Apple exchange mine for a new one instore?

I bought my Macbook Pro in Sept 2011 and just a few days ago it started making this clicking noise which stops and starts every 20 seconds. No programmes are open and it sounds as though the noise is coming from inside the computer. I picked it up one time and it sounded like something was sliding inside but this has only happened twice. If I take it into the store will they be able to fix it or give me a new one?

That is the safest thing to do. In fact if it were my Mac I would have backed it up already as soon as I heard that noise. Besides is they replace the disk there is a chance they could lose your data.
    Backups are good.
In this case I suggest a bootable clone created with either Carbon Copy Clone or SuperDuper.
The length of time for repair depends on how busy they are. I would expect them to tell you two or three days.

  • Won't turn on after powered on, sounds like a vacuum now! Noisy

So I turned on my computer, I was away for maybe 10 minutes so it should have been asleep. I tried to wake it, kept pressing the power button. It sounded like it was on. Since it didn't wake I turned off the main power (surge protector) and powered it on again. It came on but is extremely noisier than it was, almost like a vaccuum. I've had it 2 months now and am a little worried it won't get quieter like it used to be. Should I call Support? I shut down, restarted but still noisy! Thanks for any suggestions.

grays you are welcome and great find on the article that includes the same SMC reset info!
Daniel I also agree that the article needs to be updated to better include the later Intel iMac Models.
It also states: "The iMac (Early 2006) and _*later models*_ that do not have a button on the main logic board for resetting the SMC"

My built-in Webcam is not recording correctly.  When recording directly to youtube (upload), the audio sounds like a robot.  It was not doing that when I first got my new MacBook Air last month.  What do I do to fix it?
I have tested it over several days with different internet connections...and have done it with another notebook computer on the same connection and it the video uploaded and recorded fine.  I can also use the video webcam with Google Hangouts and it records and works fine.  So I know the problem is not internet connection...and apparantly not even the webcam or mic.

Try using Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

  • Fan was making a whirring sound and now it sounds like the fan isn't turning at all? Please help!

I've had this whirring noise on the fan for a couple of weeks, I've vacumed it as best I can without opening my imac up but the noise didnt stop (like a whirring clicking noise with the fan, like it was stuck on something). I've booked it in to be looked at in the Apple store on Monday (soonest appointment avaliable), but I've just switched it on and the fan clicked a couple of times and then went quiet? Am I safe to use my mac? WIll it overheat? I'm scared to use it because the fan doesnt sound like its running at all now ? I've got 5 photo sessions and a wedding to edit and I may cry! Any help or suggestions would be AMAZING! Thanks in advance!
Ps these are my mac details
    iMac
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Pps I'm a bit rubbish with tecnical things so sorry if this is something obvious!

Do 2-3 SMC resets and see if this takes care of the problem. If it does not then book an appointment with your local Apple Store to have it looked at by a Genius.
Instructions for the SMC reset are in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603

  • Making a sound recorded inside sound like it is heard from outside

    Hi there,
I am trying to make a sound recorded inside sound like it is heard from outside (in the street). Any suggestion about a good filter?
    Thanks,
    JCD

    - I hope the inside recording didn't have too much reverberation or 'room tone' (imagine recording it in a washroom). The indoors sound needs to be flat (no echo from walls, no background sound)
    - Reverb puts dead sound into a space with walls. You can add reverb, but you can't take it away. If your character is on a football pitch but you record the dialog in a washroom, it's not going to work. If your scene is in the Louvre, and your talent is recorded in a voice-over booth (or in a car or in the bedroom surrounded by blankets - hey it works), you can add the reverb.
    - Cut out a lot of the bass frequencies. Nice clean indoor sound has too much of it. The Big Outdoors lacks the reflectors that makes for big boomy sound (remember, big sound can 'sit on the shoulder' of the viewer)
    - Add location sound, so if your visual location is windswept moors, then lots of wind noise on the mic. If it's city, then lots of traffic hum, tyre noise, sudden car horns and stuff. Take your VO and pull out the bass, and you're 'there'.
    - Match camera perspective to voice perspective. If you did a close mic in a quiet room my guess is that the talent spoke softly and in a measured fashion, so your outdoor shots must be similar OR strikingly different (as if we're seeing into their mind).
    - If you need talent to deliver outdoor lines in voice-over (quiet room) for a frenetic environment, mic them up 'distant' and get them to speak loudly. Position yourself (the interviewer) a long way away from the interviewee. Mic them up with a Lav, but make out you're using on-camera mics, so they have to speak up.
    - If you're doing foley with amateurs, get them to replay the part with a radio lav (they think it's backup, it's your main) and put the biggest mic you can find as the main mic. Sometimes people need something to act to, and a lav does not cut it.
