Making Sure My Stuff Is Backed Up
Hi everyone. I want to make sure that not just my music but my apps and everything else from iTunes is backed up but I really dont know how to tell whether I did it properly?
What I plan on doing is either switching back to a usable prior version of iTunes or just leaving Apple altogether if they are not willing to work with us & provide us with a reasonable, non-disgusting product and maybe even an apology for putting iTunes 11 out. I think I have access to one or more of the older versions I just want to make doubly or triply sure that I dont lose anything. But really i just am not sure?? Do any of you have some kind of tip or advice for easily checking to be able to tell by looking at files - please keep in mind I am not - well, I used to think I was at least somewhat computer savvy but just recently when all of this iTunes mess started coming up I have come to realize that I most certainly do not know what on earth I am doing!! Like, to the extreme!
Also, please understand that I am afflicted with a severe short term memory loss (TBI) and it really really bites (I think thats the closest term I can use without getting edited.) So here's what I do.....I cant really describe things unless I'm either very, very familiar with them or am looking right at them like in front of me or have em open in another window or something. Its just so SO difficult. And when something (or somebody) does not work the way its supposed to? Fuggedaboudit! I really cant get anything into my long term memory when it doesnt make sense or click. Sigh...Try understanding how to describe this iTunes fiasco when none of it makes any sense and then incorporating it into your memory without any real explanation for all of the missing stuff in your library & all of the - - - all of the - - argh! I dont know what. Its mostly NOT the missing stuff. Its so much more than that. Its like, (I had to take a 10 minute pause to go look for my old posts here to see what all of my issues were. THen I realized that 95% of my old posts were removed for - no tenable reason? - none at all at least no justifiable reason. You'd think I was some adolescent boy who spoke of **** at every chance or something like that. But anyway. . . )
1. of course there is the cover flow that everyone complains about but thats not quite the biggest issue
2. After updating to this version of iTunes I am showing ONE movie & ONE tv show - this is after around a decade of iTunes & I know I had many, many more. 3. when I play my music - well....I dont know. All I know is that I used to like whatever it was that happened when I played my music. What happens now: I dont like. I want it changed back.
4. And that about sums it up for every single aspect of all of itunes.
5. What I put in #2 applies to a few other things. Podcasts, apps, whatever else.
So if Apple is not willing to appease what surely must be thousands & thousands of us then I suppose someone else will accomodate us. They will find that we are a group without a home & they will cater to us somehow. Its just silly. We'll go to the place with the best deal! DUH.
The easiest alternative for backing up your Mac is Time Machine. With Time Machine you can easily revert to a number of earlier backups. "Clone" software is another option.

I backed up my movies and rebuild my computer, and after making sure i'm using the latest version of itunes and quicktime and and making sure i still had spare computer authorizations, i still get error 23132. Please help.
I had this exact issue. Spent over an hour on the phone with apple support, they couldn't resolve. Here is what I ended up doing, that worked.
1. Turned iTunes match off on all my iOS devices
2. Deleted the offending playlists from the iOS device they originated on
3. Started iTunes, let it run (literally) for an hour before it became responsive. First thing I did, before clicking anywere else was disable iTunes match. If I clicked anywhere, it would clock for another hour.
4. Let iTunes run overnight, by morning it had cleaned out the repeating play lists. This got my Mac/iTunes back to an operable state.
5. Restore iPhones from backup in iTunes.
What was causing my issue was a single playlist that was created on an iPhone, then suddenly showed up with several thousand duplicates on my other iPhone. The culprit playlist did not, for some reason, duplicate itself on my two iPads. Apple support seemed to think it was because the problem iPhone tried to sync the playlist to iCloud over and over again unsuccessfully, then it finally went through and populated the thousands of blank/failed playlists which then tried to propigate to iTunes and my other iOS devices. Seems like a reasonable theory.
I have not yet re-enabled iTunes match. So, no idea what will happen if I decide to go back down that rabbit hole. -
Hello, I restored my Iphone, and I made sure that all of my stuff was backed up into the Cloud. but now when i plug it into Itunes its like a brand iPhone PLZ help! Its an Iphone 4. I look ed on the account info and everything is right plz help!

I think I am following -- I was able to upload to my iPhoto and all photos and videos are there that is a plus! I tried to create an Event in my iPhoto and put all of my photos in that event but for some reason, now my iTunes it not recognizing that Event in my iPhoto. It is not allowing me to import just that event at the moment but I may be doing something wrong. At least all of my pics and vids are in iPhoto so that is a plus and I know they are at least saved somewhere. Just for some reason, my iTunes it not locating the event that I created with only those photos.

Also, I had no clue that my iCloud could be backed up via cellular data! However, is this a new feature with the most updated iOS?? Unforutnatly I am like 2 iOS updates behind because I don't have enough storage on my phone. I still get the notification that my phone needs to be plugged in and connected to wifi in order to back up to the cloud :-(
How can I sync using USB? Right now when i click on the info tab for my iPhone in my iTunes this is the answer that I get -- I am a little unclear as to what it means.

Two different accounts? How do I know if my stuff is backed up?
My laptop and my iPhone seem to have two different iCloud accounts. The first account (laptop) is the username that I had before I changed my username to the account that is on my iPhone. Since my laptop has my old one, I tried to log out and sign in with my newish username – which I have had for quite some time now – in order to make sure that my stuff is backed up.
I do not want to delete anything if I don't have to but I just want all of my devices to be on the same page.
How can I tell what is backed up where in order to keep all of my data and toys, etc.?@ karebu,
When synching any iDevice whether that be an iPhone, iPad, iPod etc you have two options for synching your data ( back up ) to the computer where a copy of the backup is stored in the iTunes folder of your computer or you have the the alternate by using iCloud which doesn't store the backup on your computer it gets stored in the cloud similar as if you were to backup to the computer.
If the time comes when you need to restore your phone or you upgrade to another handset during the setup of the phone you will be prompted to use icloud or not and you will also be asked if you want the set the phone up as new or recover from an old backup. One of the purposes of icloud is so that you can set up your iDevice without having the phone plugged into your mac or PC.

Help: Just finished shooting a wedding and Aperture crashes constantly during editing. All pic's in RAW and even after making sure I have the latest Aperture update, I have had to rebuild my library twice and "repair" does not seem to fix the issue. Help?

If you have ThunderBolt, I would go with such for an External Working Drive, spinning platter or SSD depending on your budget
This does not have to be huge just big enough to house your most current Jobs
Once the Current Job is put to rest I would move it to a larger multi bay hard drive unit, USB or FireWire nothing fancy, no RAID, set up as one single Disk
This would only be accessed when something is needed from a past Job so the connection does not have to be speedy
The Drobo would be relegated to Vaults and backups
You can set up a Vault on the Drobo to back up the External Working Library and then Reconnect it when you have moved the Library over to the other Enclosure
This has worked for me pretty smoothly for a long while, but I have found over the years that one can not assume all people work in the same manner! :-) -
Making sure I understand release/retain correctly
Let's say I do the following (foo starts out as some object):

// STUFF with foo
[foo retain];
As long as I'm not re-assigning foo, at the end of this I'll still have the same foo, right? I'm not risking losing foo during the //STUFF am I?
I guess I'm making sure that my understanding of release is correct. If I release foo, it doesn't actually go away until all handles on it are gone. In other words, foo would have to be assigned to some other object in the //STUFF, or foo would have to go out of scope in the //STUFF (and presumably have a new foo created) in order for the actual original foo object to be deleted, right?
Ok, edit for motivation, because that's kind of a dumb thing to want to do, right?
The reason I want to do this is that lets say I have the following switch statement:
switch (test)
case 1:
foo = [A alloc];
[foo inita];
break;
case 2:
foo = [B alloc];
[foo initb];
break;
case 3:

break;
case 4:

It makes sense to release foo before the switch and retain it at then end. EXCEPT for case 3. So, I was thinking that if was safe to do what I proposed, it might make the code simpler.
Of course I can just put a release/retain pair around each alloc/init, but that's a lot of replicated code...
A [foo autorelease] and then the retain might just do the trick.

There is no way to tell. If the retain count of foo was one just before the release, then all bets are off.

I'm not sure I understand your understanding. I wouldn't use a term like "handle" since that has a specific meaning that is different than "retain count". If you replace "handle" with "retain count", then you are correct.

I'm not sure what you are saying. Objective-C is not C++. A variable going out of scope means nothing in Objective-C. It isn't that complex. It keeps track of the number of times "retain" is called on the object (including the original, implicit "retain"). When the number of releases matches the number of retains, then the object is deallocated.

You don't want to do that. Alloc-init is a set of operations. You can't spit them up. The object that "alloc" returns may not necessarily be the same object that "init" returns. "Alloc" may just return a global proxy object to do something more clever during the init. -

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill
I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

Hi guys. After updating to 7.0.6 my iphone 5s is no longer showing in itunes. Strangley it is recognised by my PC (windows 8) when I click on my computer. I have tried reinstalling itunes and making sure the drivers are up to date, but this has made no difference. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice? Thanks

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?" I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again. -
What is the best way to create the correct space for baseball jersey names and numbers? along with making sure they are the right size for large printing.
Buying more hard drive space is a very valid option, here. Editing takes up lots of room, you should never discount the idea of adding more when you need it.
Another possibility is exporting to MXF OP1a using the AVC-I codec. It's not lossless, but it is Master quality. Plus the file size is a LOT smaller, so it may suit your needs. -

To check if you have done a back up on iTunes go to:
Mac
iTunes>Preferences>Devices
Windows
Edit>Preferences>Devices
If you did back up your iPhone to iTunes it will show up here. In terms of iCloud sign into iCloud on the iPhone then go to storage and back up and it should shows you a back up of the iPhone IF it was backed up to iCloud. Is this real or a scam?If you changed your Apple ID, you will not be able to update any of the content that you used in the past. The worse case scenario here would have been to change the password. Really all you needed to do was go on the Apple site and change the password, unless you provided them with information. This will make it difficult for you to deal with turning off Find My iPhone and other Apple ID related steps. All you really needed to do was delete the email.

my photos aren't being transferred from my iphone 5c to my laptop. this option had been working on my 4s until just before i changed over to the 5c. i have tried making sure the email address on the phone and the laptop agree. perhaps i haven't done that correctly. or is there another problem?
