Making the jump, NAS drive, FLAC and other stuff

I'm seriously thinking of making the jump to an i7 27" iMac in the next couple of months after using PC's since their inception. Yes I'm that old
Just a quick couple of questions in relation to my music library & storage, not sure if this is the right forum?
My current music collection (400GB +) is currently stored on a NAS drive (NTFS) in RAID 1 configuration. Any new music is ripped via my laptop (PC) to this drive as FLAC files.
The music is played through my SONOS system but is regularly accessed on the computer for updating metadata and housekeeping etc.
Firstly once I move to the iMac, will I have to reformat this NAS drive to continue to write new tracks and housekeep it?
The other option is I could just keep the old laptop handy for this purpose but I ideally wish to move all my computer work away from the PC.
Secondly am I correct in thinking that FLAC files aren't supported by iTunes and for iTunes to reconize them I'd need to convert the 400GB's worth to apple lossless?

Thinking aloud......I'm reluctant to alter the files from FLAC. You wouldn't believe how long they took to encode and it took forever to get the metadata just right so that they displayed correctly via the sonos software.
As this is my primary way of listening to the music and isn't reliant on any computer to listen, why fix what isn't broken.
I only add ripped music from CD to this library to maintain the quality. I appreciate that at some time I may have to move with the times and adopt a digital download but not yet.
I do however convert some of this music back onto my laptop at a lower bitrate so that it can be added to my/wifes ipod/iphone etc. This music only is in an iTunes run library.
This senario works well for me at the moment and I will need to think through what you have said to see if I can enable this to continue.
That is, find a method via the mac to
1. Make the NAS visible and updatable via Mac ( i think this will work anyway, but from what you say may require a drive to be reformated with a Mac compatible file structure and the library recopied to it)
2. Rip CD's to the NAS drive as FLAC
3. Convert a lower bitrate copy of selected music for use in an iTunes library (solely for portable use)

i don't have any experience with DLNA TV's but i recently moved my iTunes library to a NAS. streaming content to airport express remote speakers and TV2 works great. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (except the airport express) so i'm not sure how well streaming e.g. HD movies to TV over wifi works.
i have a Synology DiskStation 411j and am very happy with it.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post but I've been having trouble finding an appropriate place to ask some questions.
I'm thinking about making the jump to a mac after many years of having pc's because I'm starting to get fed up with tinkering and want something that just works. I want to do mainly office stuff; use for photography and play a few games. Unfortunately warhammer online isn't supported but I see that there are alternative ways - not a deal breaker. I've been WOW sober now for 150 days.
When trying to compare systems I'm finding a few sticking points. I think what I want is a mac pro as I want to use my existing dell 24" lcd and upgrade to an eizo (for photography) at a later stage. There are things that I'm finding a little odd :
1. 1TB HDD is $450 AUD whereas I can just pick one up locally for almost half of that price. Can I order one without and then just put my own in? Is this ever done?
2. and what's the deal with the memory price?
3. and why are the video cards 1-2 generations behind the pc?
I'm not saying the system is overpriced - if I configure an xps system or alienware system the prices just get absurd.
Any comments appreciated.

Mac pro or Macbook pro? Big difference! If you want a laptop with gaming capability then you are pretty much into the Macbook pro, as graphics on the Macbook won't handle high intensity gaming. However, for MS Office and iPhoto, any mac will do. You could, for example, buy a macbook 13" and use your 24" monitor with that...or the MBP or the Mac Pro.
With the Mac Pro, you can add any compatible HD with ease. A HD is user installable on a Macbook, but it is absolutely NOT with a macbook pro. That should not stop you from going to an apple authorized repair center and having THEM do the install. If any other provider does the install and there is a problem, the warranty could be voided. Most folks buy aftermarket RAM and install themselves. It is easy.
Don't know anything about video cards.

No it isn't something you'd find on the computer, it has to be custom installed from the 10.6 installer disc or Software Update if it wasn't before. It allows you to use older PowerPC applications on your Mac. On the other hand double check the version of iTunes you have does not require 10.7 minimum either.

Converting "FLAC" and other Audio Format files from Vuze to iTunes

Good afternoon. I have a Mac Book computerthat I purchased about two years ago. I have ITunes loaded on mycomputer. I use Vuze as a software program to download music and video toITunes. However, it appears that iTunes will not concert "FLAC"and other formats of audio from Vuze. Can anyone recommend what free softwaresoftware program is preferable to use to convert the "FLAC" and otheraudio formats from Vuze to use in iTunes? I have used xACT in the past, and I now use Max for all my FLAC conversion needs. If you need to tag the FLAC files before conversion, Tag is basic but good.
For conversion inside iTunes you might want to check out Quick Convert from Doug's AppleScripts.

Is your iMac a late 2009 or newer model? Did Apple do the replacement or someone else? There is a documented issue where Apple changed the hard drive heat sensor from outside the drive to inside. If you install a replacement hard drive in a late 2009 or newer iMac that's not an Apple-sourced drive, two things happen ... the fan runs like crazy and the Apple hardware test doesn't work properly.

I don't think you understood what I wrote. You don't HAVE to pay for everything if you are happy with using the other account for updates, etc. But if you don't want to do that then you will have to buy new copies of everything for the new account. There's only one purchase item per account, but you can redownload an item in the account many times.
The idea is this:
One computer, multiple devices, one Apple ID.
One user, multiple devices, one Apple ID.
The basic idea is that each user has an Apple ID under which he/she can manage multiple devices on a single computer.
Once you step outside of that model you create such problems as not being able to use or update apps purchase under one Apple ID when using a different Apple ID. Or not being able to easily sync one device on more than one computer.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

Might be an incompatible extension or plugin ...
Try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Your profile indicates your Mac is running v10.7.2
If that is correct, updating your system software may help.
Click Software Update from the Apple menu.
Restart your Mac after updates are installed then try the App Store.
If you can't update that way, there's a workaround.
Install the OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo)
Then restart your Mac and try the App Store.

No. If you made your backup to iCloud, iTunes will not restore from an iCloud backup. See:

Ah, yes- that is an ultra high DPI (dots per inch) display. This is a known issue in Flash Player, which Adobe is working on fixing.

I have had a similar but worse issue. I sent a text with photo to 6 friends and family members. Their replies went to folks in my contacts list who were not even part of the original string. In fact, one of the replies went to someone whom I had evidently called once but was not in my contact list. This is very strange.
