Making the kern burns effect start OFF as default for a slide show

Is there any way to edit a preferences file so that when a new slide show is created, the ken burns effect starts as off? I would much rather not have to click the settings button and have to turn ken burns off every time I create a new slide show. Similarly with the music being on as default. Perhaps there's a way by editing a file or something.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unfortunately, no. That's one of the most requested changes. Add your voice to the chorus: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I turn OFF the Ken Burns effect in slideshows--it defaults there no matter if selected or not.

The Ken Burns zoom and pan appears on every slide in every slide show - despite the Ken Burns box NOT ever being checked.
    Any ideas ? Thanks.

Thanks, Leonie.  I didn't realize that slideshows had themes - but nevermind.  While searching for it, I found the settings control that I had overlooked (or had been hidden) before.  It fixed the problem.  Appreciate your help.

  • Turning off the Ken Burns Effect

How do I shut off the Ken Burns Effect to a specific image? I tried using it (I hated it) now I want to go back to just displaying the image. Do I need to delete from the timeline and start over?

In the inspector reset the Crop parameter.

  • Can I turn the Ken Burn Effect off when using the iMovie app on my iPod touch 5th generation?

I have an iPod touch 5th generation and I'm trying to make a movie using the iMovie app. When I put an image on there it moves from side to side and zooms in and out. I believe this is called the "Ken Burn Effect". Is there any way that I can turn the Ken Burn Effect off without having to adjust the image position and zoom level to be the same for the start and end points?

    Hello MisfitxCaleb
Unfortunately, the Ken Burns Effect cannot be turned off in iMovie for iOS. Like you mentioned above, having the photo at the same start and end point is the best way to make it appear as if it isn't moving/zooming.

  • How do you turn off the Ken Burns effect?

I have students who are using iMovie to create animations. We can't get iMovie to NOT apply the Ken Burns effect to the still images they are making and importing. How do we turn this "feature" off?

Are you talking about iMovie for iOS?
I will assume you are as this is the iOS forum.
    You cannot turn this off.
iMovie iOS is not the app you should use to make animations.
I suggest you have a look in the AppStore for a better app, there are a few that are better suited to make video from still frames.
Better yet do it on a computer, you will have many more options.
But again iMovie Mac is not the best app to do this.
QuickTime Pro actually has better importing of image sequences the iMovie.

  • How can I turn off the ken burns effect on iMovie? If I crop the picture it still persists!

I cannot turn off ken burns on iMovie for the life of me! Everyone is telling me to fit the photo or stop it, which I have done. However, when cropped the ken burns effect is still there in full force!!! What can I do to turn off this dreadful effect?

  • Can I turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills at once?

I am using iMovie 09.  I am creating a slideshow.  I want to turn off the Ken Burns effect from all stills.  Is there a way to do this in one operation?
    Mary Lou

Yes. Select one still. Open the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool on the middle Toolbar. Set it to FIT (for letterboxing) or to CROP (for it to fill the screen, but cut off the top and bottom). This will turn off Ken Burns.
Now select the photo you just adjusted and EDIT/COPY (or Command-C).
Now click EDIT/SELECT ALL (or Command-A) to select all photos.
Finally, click EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS/CROP ADJUSTMENTS to apply to all photos.

  • Selecting photo then clicking "Fit" does NOT turn off the Ken Burns effect.

Trying to wean from iMovieHD.  I'm having trouble mastering what seems to be more limited Ken Burns effect functionality in iMovie11.   I don't seem to have the range, say, left-to-right, as I did in either iPhoto or in iMovie HD.
So, I figured for now I'd turn off the Ken Burns effect on all the stills in this project.  I've tried selecting one photo, getting into the Fit/Crop/KB effect viewer, then clicking Fit, then Done.  But the photo keeps the KB effect that had been applied to it.
I tried changing all photos in Preferences and that didn't change anything either.
Hopefully I'm just missing something?  Thanks for any help, everybody...

Nevermind.  Got it.  As I'd hoped, user error.

  • Cant turn off the ken burns effect

The ken burns effect (why is that on by default for crissakes?) cannot be tuned off!!!! I have about 10 images in a movie made up of about 100 still images on which the ken burns effect cannot be turned off. I tried unchecking the ken burns check box & hitting the update button, but it immediately turns itself back on!! Tis is with iMovie 3, and as i said, it affects only the first 10 or so images in this particular project.

I know, sometimes it feels like Ken Burns has a mind of its own. It WILL do what you want, but first you have to figure out its rules.
The most important is that all of the Ken Burns settings, the KB checkbox, zoom, pan and duration are controlled by the LAST imported clip you made, or a previously-imported clip you clicked on. THAT's what sets the default setting for your next import(s). (A very nice feature, by the way, for it lets you apply the Ken Burns settings of one clip to the next photos you import. You don't have to reconfigure settings each time.)
That also means that when you uncheck the KB checkbox that won't "stick". When you click on some other clip it may change.
So when updating an existing clip, the trick is to select the clip, THEN adjust the Ken Burns settings, THEN Update the clip.
A complicating factor is that previously-imported photos to which special effects or other editing has been applied are no longer considered Ken Burns clips, so clicking on them doesn't have the same result.
So pay close attention to what you click on, and even closer attention to whether or not there is a clip selected or an image selected in the Photos pane selected. iMovie will select a photo on its own when you haven't selected something.
It works like you want, but first you have to see that what it does is you want.

  • Having the Ken Burns effect off (by default)

When I select pictures for a diaporama, the Ken Burns effect is always checked in the "settings" window.
Is it possible to avoid that ? (I very rarely want to use the Ken Burns effect, and have to select the "settings" windows and un-check it each time).
    Thanks for your help.

I actually gave that info to another poster and they told me it didn't work.
One person said it did, so I guess your milage may vary.

  • How come sometimes the Ken Burns effect allows you to edit the entire picture, and other times it automatically starts at a smaller section of the photo?

How come, in imovie, when adding the Ken Burns effect to a still photo, sometimes the phoo appears as the full size, and other times, the green and red ken burns boxes appear only on a smaller portion of the picture? I want to be able to Ken Burns a bigger chunk of a picture, but often times it is as if there is a pre-set for just how much the Ken Burns will cover.

Is it possible that the ones that have small boxes are in Portrait while the ones with large boxes are in Landscape?
If so, you can get bigger boxes on the Portrait ones by clicking "Allow Black" in iMovie 11. (iMovie 09 did not have this feature.)

  • Importing photos & I dont want the ken burns effect

I want to import photos into imovie to make a slideshow like I used to in earlier versions of. However, when I import a photo now, it imports somewhat zoomed in and off center.
I do not use the Ken Burns effect, so it is not on.
Also I am doing a straight import from the folder. If I try this from iphoto the ken burns effect is turned off and I still have this problem.
Has anyone else experienced this with the new version of imovie?

Although it looks like a bug, Randy, it's actually not. It's how Ken Burns works in all versions of iMovie.
The Ken Burns checkbox ONLY controls whether or not the image is imported with an animated zoom or pan. The OTHER Ken Burns settings — the duration, the zoom and the pan — are ALWAYS in effect. Those settings affect the current import. And future imports too, until you change them.
If your image imports off center it's because the Ken Burns pan setting is currently set off center. To re-center it, turn ON the Ken Burns checkbox. Stop the preview. Click on the "Start" side of the Start/End thingy. Drag the zoom slider a bit to the right, then all the way left. Repeat for the End side of the thingy. Now the image is centered, and the zoom set to 1.00. Click Apply, so it sticks.
Notice you can drag the preview image off center. That's probably how it got changed in the first place. Usually one uses the zoom and pan in combination to crop an image. To show just the left side of the image, for example.

  • Using the Ken Burns effect in I Photo 5

The first time I worked on a slide show I was able to use the Ken Burns effect with no problems. Later on opening I Photo and clicking on slide show I no longer have the controls for the Ken Burns effect. There is just a blank space where they should be. Why did this happen ? How do I get the controls back?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Vernon

    Vernon:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What may have happened is that one or more items within the iPhoto application package have had their permissions changed so you do not have access. Run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. If that doesn't help try moving the application to the desktop and making a duplicate of it-select it and type Command-D. Now move the duplicated to the applications folder and rename to just iPhoto. Now see if the KB controls come back.
Next would be a reinstallation of iPhoto. You'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Now reinstall iPhoto 5 and immediately update to the latest version. Then repair disk permissions.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • I have an older version of imovie.  After I change the photos using the Ken Burns effect and save them, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' to change the zoom, the picture appears black and I can't change the zoom?

I have a five year old version of imovie that generally works fine.  However, when I add a photo using the 'Ken Burns' effect then save the movie, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' the picture appears black and I cannot change the zoom.  Any suggestions?

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.
    See here:
