Making the leap with my luggage...

The luggage is the many manuscripts & art files I have created using Microsoft Publisher (formerly stand-alone - now part of Office). Will I be able to use those files on CDs - made with Publisher - or will I have to keep this old PC plugged in in order to use them?
Thanks.

You may have already done so but if not...
Be sure to research "HD" in general... why do you need it, how will you monitor it, how will you deliver it.
More specifically with regard to your chosen camera, research HDV and the various FCP, HDV workflow options. There's plenty here to read if you do a search.
Not saying there is anything wrong with the format but a little research can avoid a lot of confusion.

  • Running OS 9.1 on a sawtooth G4 just now making the leap to OS X!

I am so lost on where to begin to upgrade my  sidekick MAC. It's primarily used for music production with older Cubase software, (no internet or other programs are used on this computer). But out of necessity, I need to upgrade to OS X. Please help. I upgraded the processor with a Newer Tech piece from Other World Computing in 2011 but haven't used it in the OSX environment. I bought Panther  disc onlne but it doesn't boot up. I'm told i may have to take baby steps and start with 9.2 then go from there, can anyone help. yeah I know I'm decades late, but I've never had a problem with my software or my Mac doing just what I needed it to do. Any suggestions

The update to 9.2.2 can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1387
    Start with that.
Did you get a proper Panther disk, that is the universal installer with a Silver X on a black background? If you've gotten a hardware specific grey disk, it will not boot unless it is for the exact same mac model.
I suspect you may be facing that issue, as a G4 with a 733 CPU should be able to boot up that Panther disk no problem.. HOWEVER.. Panther is quite limited and the better bet is to find a budget installation of Tiger on CD, as that is the best-last OSX version (10.4.11) for the older G4 macs. (I have Tiger on a livingroom audio-box that is used to rip vinyl) Tiger ALSO allows you to 'classic boot' to OS9 applications if need be.

  • Making the leap to Mac 64-bit GUI

Right now, the way I am handling the GUI is making a Windows-native GUI and a Mac-native GUI (Carbon).
However, to make to a 64-bit plug-in, I am looking at moving my GUI over to Cocoa for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.  (To maintain 3 sets of GUIs would be way, way too much.)
1- Should I try to implement the GUI in Cocoa or should I just move to a cross-platform GUI approach like Qt?
2- If I do go down the Cocoa route... I can't figure out how to get a Cocoa GUI working in 32-bit Photoshop.  In the CS5 SDK, I got rid of the stuff in the DissolveUIMac.cpp file and disabled the if statement in DissolveUIMacCocoa, but this crashes Photoshop with a EXC_BAD_ACCESS error that I can't seem to track down.
Any thoughts?  :/  Spoiled rotten by 64-bit on Windows... updating was so easy.  Thanks by the way to all the helpful people on this forum!!!!!

I'd personally suggest using Qt - its an easy-to-learn, well-designed cross-platform library; it handles internationalization and has a lot of other benefits. And yes, it integrates reasonably easy with Adobe plugin framework.

  • Making the leap

    Hi there newbie here.
Can I install the latest os x on my imac g4 700mhz machine? Can't seem to fathem out whether it's high enough spec or not. Got an ipod for christmas and think something's telling me that I need to finally upgrade from os 9!
    Thanks Sarah

    Hi Sarah, Welcome to Discussions!
    I have just checked here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88297
and looked at the specifications for the older flat panel iMacs. Just like the current models, there were, then, a variety of specs; 128mb & 256mb options as well as CD-RW,DVD-ROM/CD-RW and Superdrive drives. However if you click on the Apple logo top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac' that will tell you how much memory is installed. Then click 'More info...', and (almost) everything you need to know will be there, 'though it may not tell you whether you've got a DVD drive.
You may find that you fall down straight away on the memory. Although Apple say that Tiger needs a minimum of 256mb, at least 512mb is preferable. (All the current models have 512mb as standard   ;-) )
A 512mb stick from Crucial would cost just over £90 (+ fitting if you can't DIY). Tiger costs another £90. If you haven't got a DVD drive, add £10+ to that for the CD version. You're over a third of the way to a Brand New iBook with Tiger pre-installed!! Maybe nearly half way if you keep your eyes on Apple's Refurbished Store from 10am Wednesdays...
    Good luck anyway.

  • Making the leap to edit in HD...so confused. PrpRes or XDCAM HD

Edited my first hour long program in HD. What a nightmare. I shoot in XDCAM HD and captured using ProRes. Using AJA Kona 3/SDI. Had a few lockups and crashes and long render times for all graphics. Just a simple text within FCP took 8 minutes for a 10 second clip! And Motion and LiveType, forget about it. Gotta be doing something wrong. Jerry, thanks for the help last week, but I am still confused if I should use ProRes or use file transfer and stay with XDCAM HD. I am about ready to stay with DV. I apologize for my ignorance, but I really appreciate the info you guys provide. I am kinda lost here. There seems to be no simple answer. My vendor is an AVID guy, so he offers little help.
    Thanks again,
    Tom

    Shane -
Very helpful. I'm also using XDCAM HD and have an i/o HD box from AJA. I have been importing the XDCAM files via Sony's software, editing my sequence natively, and changing the renders to ProRes. I recently started changing the sequence setting to ProRes and rendering. It seems to correct a lot of playback and Edit to Tape problems I had been having when laying my sequence off to a Sony 1080i HDCAM deck. Reading your post, I'm wondering if this is a smart process. I was changing the sequence to ProRes to gain the 10-bit environment for the graphics, lower thirds and overlays I bring in. Does rendering the sequence cause any loss? Do you prefer native over ProRes when it comes to XDCAM HD (I'm shooting in 1080i because the client wants a Sony HDCAM 1080i master)
Are there any other workflows for the XDCAM HD and the i/o box? I know Panasonic's P2 import software allows you to choose any codec you have on your machine...so you can pick ProRes if you like. Sony doesn't have that option and the 330 doesn't have SDI out.

    Re Time Machine
I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

  • Making a living with Dreamweaver; where's the beef?

Circumstances have put me in a situation where I need to put my Internet design/development skills to work as a self-employed person. My previous experience has always been in the corporate cubicle environment. For those of you here who are successfully self employed, where are some good places to look for information about making the right decisions and avoiding the mistakes? I found some highly recommended books for sale at Amazon, but noticed they're written for bricks-and-mortar entrepreneur types, not nerds with a service to offer. Tips?

Murray has offered some good suggestions. Here's a few more:
Register a domain and start a website for your nascent company. Make it as good as you can make it. Get business cards printed and spend a bit of time either getting a logo (having a great designer design it) or by doing it yourself. Find yourself a very good hosting company that answers its tech support phone 24/7 and prepare to set up a VPS with that company. VPSs tend to run $400 - $500 annually, but you can put loads of websites on them and charge the going annual rate for an hosted website for each one, pocketing the profit.
Join your local Chamber of Commerce. Go to Chamber meetups and, especially multi-chamber events. Hand out your business card and follow up. Learn to do a 30 second commercial about yourself and your company and tell people at these meetups exactly what you are looking for (eg: "This week, I'm looking for restaurants that need to put their entire menu on-line so that they can entice more to reserve").
If you don't own a copy of Dreamweaver, get one. Also get a copy of Photoshop. Experiment with your own website. learn to do things faster. I literally live in these two applications and do websites for small businesses.
I would try to learn either one server-side language (that is supported by your hosting company) or one client-side language (which ususally means Javascript) in the next year along with HTML and CSS. Be disciplined about learning new stuff.
Keep good books. I realize that you will find that your earnings are depressing at first and you'll want to not even balance your checkbook. Don't give in to that temptation. Every purchase you make for your business is a tax-deduction. Every mile you drive to see a client is, too. Record everything and keep everything together. See a CPA this fall to set yourself up to save money come tax time in April. You might consider using either Quicken or Quickbooks Pro -- but you should get a categories list from a CPA that you will use next year so that he or she will be prepared for the kinds of things you are spending money on.
Do not do a templated website and then do the same website for every client you come across. Make sure that what you do can be adapted to any kind of look you might want.
Realize that Dreamweaver "plugins" will save you lots of time, but never directly charge a client for one. Any plugin you purchase needs to work for several clients and one client ought not have to pay for the entire purchase, which is supposed to make you faster.
Realize that any technique done in any plugin also lives out there on the Internet. this includes drop-down menus, jQuery effects, image rotators, accordions and so on. The advantage of a plugin is to save you time so, if you are pressed for time, buy what fits your client's needs and try to make it pay you back with the next several clients.
Keep track of your hours spent on each client so that you know how long it takes to do a website. Then make sure you're making more than minimum wage when you quote one.
Do not do any website without a contract. Consult with a good attorney and set up your company and design a standard contract that you will have everyone sign before you start work. Always require a deposit for your work. Always insist on payment in full before you launch a website. I like my work, but I like my work for free not at all. My company is an LLC and that keeps anyone from going after anything I own, like my house, my car and so on. I have to pay an annual Business Entity Tax in my state, but it's an insurance policy that is more than worth it.
Now, I am certain my suggestions have all ready bankrupted you in purchases and fees. But I have fewer headaches because I set things up before I really knew what I was doing.
Now that I know a little more, I am very pleased to show it off a little.

  • HP G85 All in one - Making the printer Wireless preferably with Airprint

I am running XP on an HP towerand connecting the Printer using  a USB - USB cable.  I would like to make this excellent printer wireless to print from my HP laptop.
But also to use it to print from my iPad2 without the hassel of emailing  an iPad document to myself to collect it on the Tower and then print. I believe It would be necessary to make the connection Airprint compatible
I wondered if anyone had solved this problem.

I fully agree with this complaint.  Curiously, I have faced similar problems like him.  Frequently, I have seen the messages like "paper jam ", "Cartridge missing" while there wasn't any paper jam and genuine brand new cartridges were already installed.  My experience is worse than his.  I could hardly use it for more than one week!  What is worse the wireless operation could never be achieved. Now this printer is lying discarded.
It really beats all logic that why should one not be able to scan a document (say -- to save the image on the hard disk for possible future use) even if there was so called paper jam or missing cartridge?
Also, it is virtually impossible to delete any job once you have clicked the button print.  The printer would keep on retaining the job, making the printing of other jobs impossible,  unless perhaps you uninstall it and then re-install!  Why can't HP find a solution to this problem?
I join his sentiments that I would refrain from buying any HP product in future.

I am using duel thunderbolt displays with a MacBook Pro. I only have the option to have sound come from one or the other. Has anyone thought of making the left channel come from both speakers on the left Monitor and the same of the right? If yes, how is that done? The MacBook Pro could even be a center channel if configured in that order.

  • Firefox web pages often print with many extra spaces between letters, making the printout illegible and useless..

When I try to print e-mails in Thunderbird and web pages in Firefox, the individual letters usually print (either to my laser printer or to Acrobat Distiller) with many spaces between each letter, making the printout nearly illegible and useless. Any thoughts? And settings that would correct this? (I never had this problem before the last few months, using earlier versions of Firefox and Thunderbird.

about:config has many listings for each of my printers, but instead of starting with "print.print_printer" [naming the printer], most listings that name a printer start with "print_printer" or simply printer_[printer name]. I don't want to reset all the listings, not knowing beforehand if that would be advisable.

Making measureHeightOfItemsUptoMaxHeight consistent with the way we create rows in the datagrid. MakeRow ensures reported row height is round to the nearest integer, measureHeightOfItemsUptoMaxHeight is now consistent.  Fixes a long standing PrintDataGrid issue.

Well, you could do the following:
    1) Create a stored procedure that assembles the data into a rowset with rows and fields like the format you want.
    2) Create stored procedures that handle insert, update, and delete.
    3) Create an entity object definition with all transient attributes. Make the attributes match the elements of one row.
    4) Override doDML() in the entity object class to call your procedures (the doc explains how to do this). You might also need to do a bit of research and figure out if you need to override some other method so you can report rows with transient attribute changes only as needing posting. (getPostState(), maybe?)
    5) Create a view object definition with entity-derived attributes based on your EO attributes.
    6) Override the appropriate methods to call your data assembly procedure rather than execute a query (this is also in the doc).
Still kind of kludgy, but it keeps your business components pretty clean, especially if you use framework classes to do most of the work for you. (I have a partial example of how to do that here.) Of course, it keeps your business components clean by moving the real work to the DB, but some people find that more maintainable that a kazillion business components.
    Hope this helps,

I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 yesterday, and now my battery life has really deteriorated since.I was making it thru the day with about 70% battery life left. It is now 3:30 and I'm already down to 50%. The upgrade worsened my situation. Any help out there?

I had the battery problem. I upgraded the to iOS 5.0.1 last night and at least that problem seems to have been fixed. However, the problem with no audio on phone calls remains. Have not tried swapping the SIM card yet. The ATT guy says that they have resolved 90% of the no audio issues with a new SIM card. Not sure athat what has to do with anything but will try that first before requesting a replacement phone.

good day my question is , does anyone of you experiencing when making a call with facetime the phone shuts off and restart

    See this veeeeeeeeeery long thread.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857
It's an issue with hundreds of phones.  Some claim it's software related, some hardware, some say it's a mixture of both.
Some people have had temporary success with quitting the Phone.app / restoring as a new phone / restoring from an iCloud backup / disabling Siri / toggling speakerphone on & off...
Unfortunately all of the above only been temporary, with the problem recurring again after a few calls, or a few days etc.
So far the only solution that seems permanent has been to replace the phone.  But even so, it's the luck of the draw to recieve a functional phone, and not another faulty one.
I'm completely annoyed as there is no Apple Store near me...... and Apple haven't even acknowledged the issue, despite the above thread being 34 pages long, as of writing.

I recently purchased a song on iTunes, with around five dollars on my iTunes store credit. After making the purchase money was taken from both my store credit and my credit card associated with the account. Why? The incident is extremely annoying and I am dissapointed with Apple's services. With Apple being a fortune 500 company, why would it resort to ripping off a customer.

If you were instructed to call them, then that's what you should do. They will probably need to verify your identity before helping you with the security question.
