Making ttf fonts available

G'day,
In my quest for nice fonts I have installed ttf-ms-fonts, and that has fixed up my fonts in firefox and thunderbird nicely.
My problem is that these fonts aren't available to apps such as nedit.
I have tried adding the font paths to my XF86Config like so:
    FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"
    FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttf-ms-fonts"
But this doesn't seem to work. My XF86 log contains this:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttf-ms-fonts
I've tried a couple of things like reinstalling the ttf package, trying to regenerate the font cache, etc but when it comes down to it I know nothing about fonts really so there is probably an easy solution.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your replies, guys.
Well yes, the tailing slash for my fontpaths was something I missed!
But even after fixing that up, running # fc-cache -fv, and even deleting the fonts.cache file then regenerating the cache, no luck.
Looking at all the relevant config files inside the font directories such as fonts.cache and fonts.dir, I can't see anything suspicious. They look much the same as those in other directories.
This might give somebody a hint though:
[root@mctav mctavish]# xset fp+ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
xset:  bad font path element (#54), possible causes are:
    Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
    Incorrect font server address or syntax
Ownership and permissions for TTF and ttf-ms-fonts directories don't look any different to others that work, and the fonts.dir directories are definitely there. I don't know enough about the font server to know if there is a problem there.
I've googled for answers, but no luck.
Ah, the sweet mysteries!

  • Making a TTF font file from set of SVG images

    Hi,
    I produced a large set of Egyptian Hieroglyph outlines in SVG file format and I would like to produce a TTF font file using these images ( http://www.qsl.net/5b4az/pages/egypt.html ).
    Is there an application or some other way to consolidate these SVG image files into a TTF font file please? Without having to import them one at a time? (there is 1070 of these!)
    My thanks in advance.

    Thank you, I will see if I can modify it for my needs.
    For fonts with good selections of Egyptian hieroglyphs, you might look at NewGardiner.ttf, http://www.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk/~mjn/egy … diner.html, and Aegyptus.otf, http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/.
    I actually produced all these hieroglyph images by extracting the glyphs from Aegypus.otf into individual pgm image files and editing in the Gimp.  I did this for the basic Gardiner set and the extra hieroglyphs suggested in the NewGardiner font. But as I put a lot of effort into retouching all these images, I would like to assemble them into a ttf font file. Just a thought.....

  • Why don't some of my .ttf fonts appear in the font menu?

    Hello,
    I have a number of .ttf fonts installed on my system (located in Win7/Windows/Fonts folder) which do not appear in Flash or other Adobe applications such as InDesign. I did try putting them in the Fonts folder of these programs instead of the default Windows location but that didn't work! The fonts are available in the font menu in Microsoft Word 2010. The fonts all have a dot before the file name, see below. So could that be the problem? I am using some of them to type Vietnamese characters. Can anyone help?

    That did it, thanks.  Now they still don't.fully load but they do have links at the bottom to get the rest of the message.

  • Displaying TTF Fonts Issue with Microsoft VM

    Anyone:
    I have a Java 2D design tool that adds text to the graphic design. I implemented the use of TTF Fonts using the Family Name of the fonts. It works just fine for a user running the designer applet with the Sun JRE.
    However, a user that is using the designer applet with Microsoft VM is unable to display the font changes. All of the fonts are installed in the Microsoft/Fonts folder and the fonts all work fine with Sun JRE, but do not change at all using the Microsoft VM.
    Does anyone have any experience with this and how to get the fonts to display correctly for both the Sun JRE and the Microsoft VM users?
    Thanks...Scott

    Yes...I know the Microsoft VM has gone away...but only recently and only Sun is available for new machines. If everyone was running Sun I wouldn't have a problem here...but unfortunately a lot of my customers are running the Microsoft VM and I need a solution to the issue.
    I have to believe that even though compatibility ended way back in the dark ages...the Microsoft VM has a way of using the fonts installed in the Microsoft/Fonts folder...which is not happening. The Sun JRE is using the fonts in the folder...but the Microsoft VM is not...
    So I need someone that knows what needs to happen to get the Microsoft VM to use the fonts installed on the local machine.

  • Using TTF Fonts in ROME

    Hello,
    i've been using Rome for several months now (meaning since almost the first days of the prerelease) and i'm pretty satisfied. I use ROME for all my graphics i have to create for my work. I even do my presentations with ROME. But now i've stumbled over a little problem. I need to use CI-Fonts which are only available in the TTF-format.
    Is there any way to use those fonts in ROME? I've noticed that ROME seems only to be capable of using SWF Fonts. Hope someone can help me with that ;-)
    Best regards,

    I have a whole lot of .ttf fonts in my special fonts

    The usual place to put them would be Users/username/Library/Fonts. Is that where they are?

  • .TTF fonts

    Greetings,
    I looked in some other threads here but could find no helpful solutions.
    I have some .TTF Feng Shui fonts that come from a PC. I have tried to use them but to no avail.
    When I copy them in to my Font Book I get an error message.
    Any tips a to how to get them to work?
    Thanks
    Eric

    No this does not work either; I see only the bottom
    2/3 of the font.
    Then these fonts are probably just poorly made and can't be used on a Mac. Normally windows .ttf fonts work perfectly fine -- OS X itself comes with a bunch of them.
    I also got myself a different copy of the font and
    when I try to install this in the Font Book I get an
    error in the font validation. All boxes are OK but
    the last one, ‘System Validation’ this one has a red
    x.
    Any more suggestions?
    In my view FontBook's validation info is not of any practical value. If you want to try a .ttf font, install it manually and see if it works. If it doesn't, you just need to find an alternative that meets you needs.

  • InDesign CS 5.5 (W7/64Bit) doesn't recognise a replaced TTF font

    I have a strange problem here. I use certain ttf font for creating documents in office products as well as in Adobe Products like InDesign. Since there is a newer version of that font available, I uninstalled the older version in Windows -> Control Panel -> Fonts folder an installed the newer version of that font.
    Now all office applications as well as some Adobe applications (PS, Illustrator) show the new font from the fonts menu. But InDesign refuses to deal with that font. InDesign still shows the old version. Therefore I checked the fonts folder of InDesign. But this one is empty. How can I convice InDesign to accept the new font?
    Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Torsten

    Guys, we made it!
    Allthough there were no TTFs in the Adobe InDesign Font folder I found a Windows sub folder where the old version of the font was located with a ~ sign in its name. As I tried to delete this one, I got the message that it was in use. So after rebooting the system, I was able to delte this file. Then I deleted the InDesign font cache file and started InDesign and ... tada!!! .... it showed up correctly in InDesign. Thank you so much

  • Time Machine gets stuck on 'Making Backup Disk Available'

    This has been happening a few days now. Time machine kicks off a backup but it never gets anywhere. It just keeps spinning and saying 'Making Backup Disk Available'
    The log says only:
    Starting standard backup
    Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
    Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
    I tried to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle and although it says it needs to be repaired, when I click repair it quickly says it 'Volume Repair Complete' but then gets stuck on ''Updating Boot Support Partitions for the volume as required'. I left it on all night to see if it would ever finish and it never did.
    Where do I go from here?
    Thanks

    Where do I go from here?
    if disk utility can not repair the sparse bundle you can try repairing it with disk warrior or a similar tool. if that does not work either you need to trash the sparse bundle and start backups from scratch. there isn't anything else you can do.
    Thanks

  • How to install .ttf fonts in Solaris 10 x86 10/08 ?

    Hi,
    I have installed Solaris 10 x86 10/08 on my Pentium-II machine. It is working fine. I am using Java Desktop Session 3 (JDS3).
    I have to install a few true type fonts (.ttf) to the machine and make it accessible in the gnome-terminal. I have the font files, that is .ttf files, in my system, but they are not installed.
    Could you please give me the procedure to achieve this? Should I install any patches for this?
    Regards,
    Sreeram

    Hello Lubos Kocman,
    Thanks for your reply. I followed your suggestion and put the .ttf fonts in the /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType directory and rebooted the system.
    [Actually, you had mentioned to put them in /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF directory. But I did not find the TTF directory. Instead I found TrueType directory and so I felt it appropriate to place them here.]
    But still I am unable to access and choose those fonts from my gnome-terminal's font list. Have I missed something? The same result was obtained when I placed the fonts in the ~/.fonts directory also. Please guide me if I am doing something wrong.
    How do we ensure that the system has recognised the fonts which have been installed newly? Any commands to confirm this? Are there any log files pertaining to fonts, where we can know whether the fonts were recognised by the system, and if not recognised, the reason for the same?
    Also, I would like to paste the contents of /etc/release of my system:
    Solaris 10 10/08 s10x_u6wos_07b X86
    Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
    Use is subject to license terms.
    Assembled 27 October 2008
    Should I install any patches to this version of Solaris 10 to get the .ttf fonts installed. As mentioned earlier, I am using Java Desktop System, Release 3 desktop.
    Kindly guide me in installing/accessing the .ttf fonts.
    Regards,
    Sreeram

  • "No System Fonts Available" when fonts are embedded

    I'm a writer using LaTeX to produce PDFs. I recently started to use an editor who uses acrobat for editing.
    I have sent him a PDF with all the fonts embedded [full fonts embedded, not just subsets], and the fonts show up that way on the "Fonts" tab of the properties box.
    However, when he goes to edit it in acrobat, the error "No System Fonts Available" shows up.
    Why is acrobat unable to edit a PDF that it fully admits has the fonts embedded?

    Embedded fonts means the metrics for displaying the fonts is within the PDF but not the fonts themselves. This is also why cutting can pasting text with embedded fonts sometime results in little squared indicating an unknown or unmapped character for a given character code. You also do not have the embedded fonts available on your system.

  • Apex fop add ttf fonts

    Hello, Im solving problem with PDF printing in Apex 4.1.1 and fop 0.93 running on oc4j . There is problem with some characters displayed as “#” in output pdf. This usually means the selected font doesn't have a glyph for the character.
    I have studied apache fop reference where is written that I can add custom fonts. But I cant realize how to modify apex_fop.jsp to add ttf fonts.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi
    Some times ago I created fop module with polish characters. It was hard work.
    1. I used free true type fonts with special characters
    2. I created metric files based on this fonts
    3. Connected to config files
    4. Rebuilded some jsp page
    5. Changed apex reports print templates
    You can read it on my blog (only polish version ): http://apex.dbe.pl/search?q=fop there is files to download with readme.
    Probably you can't use it with APEX Listener 2

    If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
    I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. The western digital that had my main data on that is my daily external that I store about 2TB of data on is still perfect and the new technology TM appears to already be cashed. Love the computers, not to big of a fan on the externals of the apple TV's. No life expectancy. Neither here nor there.
    suggestions before I either get this looked at or scrap the HD on it and move forward.?
    Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
    Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
    If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
    If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

  • Load TTF font ???

    hi,
    i'am trying to distribute with my application an external font.it's loading correctly but nothing appear on screen :/
    JLabel label = new JLabel("Hello World");
    FileInputStream stream = new FileInputStream("c:\\LED.ttf");
    Font f = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT,stream);
    label.setFont(f);
    does it's possible to set a font that is not in normal system path ?
    vincent.

    I once did it like that for a special font used via a label. It works for both file system and jar files:
    public class CSpecialFontLabel extends JLabel {
         private static final String URL_FONT = "appl/gui/font/ariblk.ttf";
         private static Font m_font;
         public CSpecialFontLabel(int style, int size) {
              loadFont();
                  setFont(m_font.deriveFont(style, size));
          * Draws the version info.
         public void paint(Graphics g) {
              Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D) g;
              g2d.setRenderingHint(
                   RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING,
                   RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
              super.paint(g);
          * Loads the font for the version info
         private void loadFont() {
              if(m_font == null) {
                try {
                        InputStream is = this.getClass().getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(URL_FONT);
                        m_font = Font.createFont(Font.TRUETYPE_FONT, is);
                        is.close();
                   } catch (Exception e) {
                        // loading font failed -> use std. Font
                          m_font = new Font("Arial", Font.ITALIC | Font.BOLD, 60);

  • I do I make all fonts from Windows/Fonts available to CS5 ?

    It used to be that I very rarely used fonts within CS5 but recently I have.  I realized that all of the fonts supposedly included with CS5 are not available via my drop down menu.
    I then found these fonts in Windows/fonts so I copied all of those fonts into Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Fonts.  These unavailble fonts are now listed in that folder but are still not available via the dropdown menu in PS CS5.
    I've recently read that the fonts don't really even NEED to be in the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Fonts folder and that PS should actually make all of the fonts in Windows/Fonts available via the dropdown menu.  Yes, I have restarted PS after copying the files and also tried rebooting my PC after copying the files.  The fonts are still not available via the drop down text menu within PS even though all of them are now in both locations.
    Can anyone help me with this problem?  Thanks!

    Sometimes the font names are shown with slightly different names in windows, depending on the program.
    For example, in photoshop cs5 if you scroll the font list almost to the bottom, do you see a font named Kozuka Gothic Pr6N
    I believe that is the same as the KozGoPr6N font(s) listed in the windows font folder.
    The different font styles (Bold, Heavy, Light etc.) are listed under the font styles drop-down just to the right of the font list in the tool options bar.
    I believe the font menu in photoshop cs5 sorts/shows the fonts by script.
    This script might make it easier to indentify the fonts as shown in photoshop with the names shown in the windows fonts folder.
