Malfunctioning key on Satellite A300

Good day,
Yesterday I bought the laptop Toshiba Satellite A300 and then I installed it, Windows 7 RC1 and now there is a problem. Key to that is to Slovak keyboard symbol "?" for English is "\" in combination with the Shift key does not work :-( If you press a key on the keyboard itself is displayed as the character but if I use the keyboard combination Shift key and the cursor is not removed.
Can someone advise me whether there is a problem with the laptop or is the problem of operating system and drivers?
Thanks

Hello,
Today I am Winodws Vista installed and do not help either. I rather I'm afraid that the problem is with the BIOS, because this is not one problem with this laptop that I have.
As I also wrote on this forum in any operating system run startup screen "Windows is starting" and as being booting system of loudspeakers is unbearable ringing, it takes about a minute, the system run properly. And this problem will certainly be concerned because the BIOS whistle occurred install Vista or Linux.
So I think that these two problems together.
Can you advise how I could update the bios?
Thank you

Sometimes when I push FN+ brighten it works but nothing appears on my laptop as it used to when I had xp also I bought my Toshiba from UAE.

    Hello
I have satellite A300 too and use it with Win7 32bit. Everything works perfectly. It is very important to install all drivers, tools and utilities following right installation order so here is the list how I have done this:
    Satellite A300 (PSAG8E) and clean Win7
    -Win7 (original Microsoft install disc)
    -chipset driver
    -storage manager
    -display driver
    -sound driver
    -modem driver
    -supervisor utility
    -infrared
    -patches
    -configfree
    -VAP
    -toshiba hardware setup
    -HDMI control
    -WLAN driver
Everything works well but missing some drivers
    Added Vista stuff:
    -Toshiba assist - work properly
    -Card reader - installed properly
-Webcam driver for A500 - tested with Skype - work properly.
    -Synaptics driver
Win7 runs well and I am very satisfied with it.

  • Satellite A300-243 - Easy Keys & Recovery Disc don't work

Hi, I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite A300 243 and I decided to reinstall system to Vista Ultimate 64 bit (because of the 4GB ram usage).
It took me a few hours, but in the end I found all needed drivers and everything is working fine, except one thing - those multimedia keys (I think they're called Easy Keys). Start, Stop, Next track and Preview track works fine, but the first (by default used for toggling illumination) and the second (by default used for starting W Media Player) just don't work. I have installed the latest version of VAP for 64 bit Vista and in Toshiba Button Support I'm not able to change anything. The list, where normally I'm able to choose a key to edit its function, is empty. I found a few similar problems on this forum, but without any useful answer - lookes like the only way is to use the Toshiba Recovery option, and at this point I'm getting to my second problem.
The second problem is in Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator and Toshiba HDD Recovery tool. At first, before I reinstalled Vista to 64 bit version I wanted to create Recovery Disc, but Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator just didn't started. Then I found the HDD Recovery option, and I read, that this tool is placed on a hidden partition, so I thought I will be able to recover the old system with this tool in case of any compication. So I reinstalled the system and wanted to go back to 32 bit, because it looked like its slower and at first I wasn't able to find all necessary drivers. And what a surprise - Recovery tool disappeared!
Now the only thing I'm missing on 64 bit version is those two multimedia keys.
And the last question - is there any chance to get a Recovery Disc with Vista 64 bit?

    Hello
As you said for the easy keys or also called illumination buttons you need the Toshiba Value Added Package. The Satellite A300-243 belongs to the PSAG8E series and therefore you can find all drivers and tools on the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Before you install the VAP, make sure that all drivers are installed and SP1 for Vista at least. Then you can install it and normally then you can use the FN keys, illumination buttons, etc.
Make also sure that you have installed the newest BIOS for your notebook.
About your problem with the recovery disk creator and HDD recovery option I can only say that these features are only available on the preinstalled Vista version. That means if you upgrade to Vista 64bit you cant use the HDD recovery option anymore and also the recovery disk creator.
So if the recovery disk creator doesnt work you should use the HDD recovery option but this is not stored on a hidden partition. These files are stored on the second partition of HDD in the folder HDDrecovery. The hidden partition that you mean belongs is a Vista feature: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Recovery_Environment
But just one question: Did you already create a recovery disk?

  • Satellite A300 PSAG4A music keys not working

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and actually Toshiba related problems in general. :P
I own a Toshiba Satellite A300-PSAG4A laptop running on 32-bit Vista. A few days ago, the Harman/Kardon illumination music keys on it suddenly stopped working. When I'm not using my laptop, I usually put it into Sleep mode and normally wake it up using these touch keys - however for some reason they randomly stopped lighting up and responding.
I tried the usual - rebooting the laptop and frantically testing the buttons but of course they are not responding. The keys and the laptop in itself have served very well up until now an I can't think of any reason why this is happening now.
I'm not super-computer savvy however I have done a bit of reading on the topic of these keys and wanted to try reinstalling the Toshiba Value Added Package method - however I could not find the TVAP file anywhere on my laptop.
Additionally, Toshiba does not seem to offer support for my laptop series (A300-PSAG4A); their download section only caters to the ST series. Please correct me if I'm wrong - I could be searching right or whatever.
I performed a System Health Report to check if it's a driver-related issue and it came up with the following :
Two error messages stating that "The device driver for Base System Device has not been installed" and one stating that "The device driver for #UNKNOWN# has not been installed.
I don't know what any of those mean or if they are relevant to my problem.
    Please help?

Hi, thanks so much! That was really helpful, I didn't know Toshiba has separate sites for different continents. I live in New Zealand, so that'd be why it's an Australian series.
However I mentioned earlier that I can't find the VAP file anywhere on my computer. I have since done additional reading up the subject and learned that the package also enables the FN keys - which don't seem to be working at all. I'm pretty sure my laptop doesn't have the file on it (it is second-hand so the previous owner might have uninstalled it) unless there is some special way of searching for it? Where would it normally be located?

  • Functional key's don't work on Satellite A300 (PSAG4E)

    Hello!
    I have notebook Satellite A300-PSAG4E
I had installed WinXPPro sp3 on it. All great, but some troubles with keys appeared.
First - 6 functional keys above main keyboard (1 - light(?), 2 - media player (?), 3 - play/pause, 4 - stop, 5 - prev, 6 - next) just change light when they pressed, but in OS there is no any action.
Second - pressing Fn button and, for ex. F2 cause no action
All drivers and programms was downloaded and installed from toshiba's support center. What info must I provide to solve this problem?

    Hey,
What you mean exactly if you write about changing the light if you press the illumination buttons? Will the color be changed or what happens exactly on the notebook?
Normally for the illumination buttons and XP you need Toshiba Control, Controls Driver, Utilities, etc.
Using the FN+F2 combination you can change between different power profiles. Therefore you need Toshiba Power Saver that can be downloaded on the Toshiba page. Its a really tool where you can adjust all power and cooling settings.

  • Satellite A300-1M1 - cursors keys wont work

    Hi everyone.
I have one Satellite A300-1M1, and in this last weekend both "up" and "down" keys just stop working. At the same time which is very strange.
What should i do ? is it dust ? Ive just cleaned the entire keyboard with a bottle of air spray, and problem remains.
The warranty has just expired last November.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

I dont know what do you want to hear. If the keys are not working you must exchange the keyboard.
What you can try is to test keys functionality in BIOS settings. If the keys dont work there too I presume it must be some mechanical problem.
You can also try to remove key caps and clean them up.
    What else you can do?

  • Toshiba Satellite A300-129 Crisis Recovery Mode Phoenix BIOS with USB drive

When flashing my BIOS back from v4.20 to a v3.90 I found on the net, everything went alright in windows, but as soon as I rebooted, the laptop showed the symptoms of a failed BIOS.
I'm now trying to repair the BIOS using the crisis recovery tool. I used the following procedure to create the USB stick and recover the BIOS
-Run the WINCRIS.Exe file in administrator and compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)
-Select the USB drive (1GB Kingston), and format it with the tool
-Reinsert the drive and format again with the tool without restarting it to be sure that the disk is properly formatted
-Take the BL5S3D57.WPH file from the toshiba BIOS update and rename it to BIOS.WPH, and copy to the Crisdisk directory
-Copy the files BIOS.WPH (the one from toshiba I renamed), minidos.sys and winphlash16.exe to the drive in windows
    -Take the drive out
-Plug battery out, plug AC out of laptop, hold the power button for a few seconds to make sure no remaining current is in the laptop
    -Plug the USB Drive in
-Hold Fn+Esc in my case, this is the key combination where the laptop tries to read the USB drive the moment it boots up. It has something to do with enabling a boot block in the BIOS with that key combination.
-Plug AC in while still holding the F button
The F button does not nescessarily need to be held while plugging in AC, the laptop also tries to read from the drive if I hold it after plugging AC in, and before pushing the power button.
    -Press the power button
I need to push the button twice, because the first time after plugging in AC the power button doesn't do a thing. When holding the power button for around 10 seconds after right after plugging AC in, the laptop boots sometimes, didn't find a pattern yet here.
The easy thing however is to just push the button 2 or 3 times, then it boots, and the booting procedure seems exactly the same as when holding the power button
-Wait for the LED to flash on the USB Drive. Very important: it seems to only flash ONCE for me, so it means it tries to access the drive, but I think it doesn't contain the right files or isn't formatted correctly. If I keep holding the F button while the laptop is on, the LED flashes once every 10-20 seconds.
From here on out the laptop is supposed to be reading the BIOS files from the USB drive, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. So here comes my question:
What could I be doing wrong in formatting the drive or writing the files to it?
Do I have the wrong CRISDISK? Is it normal that the files arent copied by CRISDISK to the USB Drive and that I have to do it myself?
Am I using the wrong WinPhlash? Or should I use the files that are supplied in the official BIOS rar from toshiba?
I have tried different versions of CRISDISK, different USB Drives (one 4GB would not be read by the broken laptop, and another 1GB would not be read by CRISDISK when trying to format the drive)
Tried different files on the USB Drive, tried bios.wph instead of capitals, tried BIOS.FD,...
I'm kind of running out of options here to try. Is there anyone who has experience with this recovery mode flashing that could tell me what I might be doing wrong? Or that has any suggestions on which other CRISDISK or toshiba updates to use?
Thanks anyways to people who read this and try to help!

I hope that Russian service provider will be as honest as the European one and won't solder something out as a souvenir :)
They said, it will take approximately a week.
Serviceman said that L30 has no built-in crisis recovery routine.
So I wasted money by buying an USB floppy disk drive and risked to burn something in my laptop by frequent powering it on and off (and may be burnt, will see).
The lesson I learnt is never flash BIOS if everything works and if even flash then not from Windows (btw. I flashed successfully my Satellite A300 from Windows without any problems).
Phoenix makes its BIOSes since 2001 with a crisis recovery boot block, but Toshiba locks this feature in many laptops, I think, not without a reason. Service providers want money too :)

  • Satellite A300 thinks button is held down and won't start up (long)

Hey sorry this is so long but I would really love some help,
Ok so I was just wondering if there is a way to fix this...
I was on my Satellite A300 (just over a year old) last night playing the Left 4 Dead 2 Demo using the Stream network and all of a sudden in Online Co-op the Camera Assistant Window opened minamising Left 4 Dead 2.
I thought this strange because I had closed the side popup bar for Camera Assistant on startup so that it wouldn't popup and do exactly what it did....
So after being confused I just clicked back onto Left 4 Dead 2 and thought "I'll deal with that in a sec"... When Left 4 Dead 2 did maximise again, (it took a few moments where there was a black screen and about 1 second of audio looping), I couldn't physically play but I could watch the game in a special mode that lets you take a break and let AI take over for a while. Also the in game chat box was up.
I was at first just trying to click the button to turn off AI control but the game wouldn't respond. Then my chat box's typing section started filling up with 'u's so I tried to get rid of them. All I could do was high-light them with my mouse and then more 'u's would replace them.
After trying Alt+F4 for a while and Ctrl+Alt+Del with no responce except for the 'u's I decided the poor computer must be strained with Left 4 Dead open and Stream, Illistratror and the Camera open in the background so I pressed the power button (set to shut down on my computer) and waited...
Left 4 Dead 2 closed, as did Camera Assistant I think... and then it kind of froze so I just held down the power button (sorry I know that probably wasn't the best move) and my laptop turned off...
Well when I tried to turn it back on the Black "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen pops up along with the little footer explaining what F2 and F12 do. After that the screen switches to the little blinking text bar thing (sorry I don't know what it's actually called...) but the bar flashes on and remains there for about 4-5 seconds and then flashes off and on again, although it seems slightly duller in colour) and then a single tone plays (from the computer even if earphones are plugged in) and yeah... I have to turn it back off...
Remembering about the 'u's I assumed the computer was not happy that the 'u' button was being held down on startup so remembering that the fron of the keys are actually removable I (very carefully) removed the 'u' faceplate. It all looked 'normal' underneath... (I compared it to the 'y' button) and so pressed it a few times and re-placed the faceplate. Turned on the compter... Same thing happened...
I then tried taking out the battery and then putting it back in to see if that would help... Again, the tone played... I took unpluged my iPod, Took out the CD, and removed the Memory Card to see if that would help... It didn't unfortunately.
So next I tried turning on the computer whist pressing 3 keys (I thought it might cancel out the 'u' key) abd held down 'b+n+m'. The first time I did this Windows Boot Manager opened instead of the beeping. I only have Windows Vista so when I tried to continue by pressing 'enter' nothing happened... So I turned off the computer and tried again (this time with q+w+e as I thought maybe holding b+m starts Boot Manager). This time Windows Error Recovery displayed with the options; Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Start Windows Normally. Again Enter wouldn't work... And thats my sistuation so far...
Please help if you can >: I'm scared if I take it to a Japanese Compute Person they'll wipe everything...
    Thankyou,
    Rochelle
(again I am sorry this is so long but I thought people might wan't specifics...)

    hi Ellehcore,
sure it is always the hardware.... nope!
deinstall the webcam software and/or shutdown the webcam service
this will prevent the software to show up in your game...
but with this extended problems you should ask a servicepartner for assistance....
    or simply recover the system...

  • MousePad & Keyboard dont work under Win7 on Satellite A300-1BZ

    Hi,
I have just installed Windows 7 onto my laptop which is around a year old now but the mouse pad and the keyboard do not work. No lights on the caps lock keys or anything, the only way to get them to work is to press the power button so that the laptop goes into sleep and then press it again to wake it up, this then wakes up the keyboard but the mouse pad still does not work.
I can plug a USB mouse in and this works but I would prefer if the touchpad and the keyboard would just work in the first place!! However if I then restart the computer using the keyboard the touchpad then suddenly works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks

I have upgraded my Satellite A300 to Win7 and both devices works perfectly.
Have you made upgrade or clean Win7 installation?
To be honest it is a little bit strange. I have installed WXP, Vista and now Win7 on my A300 but touchpad and keyboard worked well all the time.
Have you noticed this immediately after fist start or later?

  • Satellite A300-1N8 - Need 64bit drivers

    Hello, fellow "Toshibers".
I got a Satellite A300-1N8 two days ago and I've installed Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on it, but guess what - my graphics card and my network adapter (and several other things as well) would not start.
It is important to say that this notebook comes without any software (on external hardware (CD,...)) at all.
The exact statement for both devices' status given by the Device Manager is "The device cannot start. (Code 10)" and then they suggest I should check for solutions on Microsoft's site. Well, that sounds exactly like "The keyboard is not working. Press any key to continue." (Courtesy of Motorola in computer's dark ages).
Therefore I cannot use advanced graphic features for the moment or connect to the internet.
I have focused on the network adapter problem for the time being.
The adapter is Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0). I updated the driver manually using the driver for Vista x64 provided at Realtek's website for the adapter but it is all the same.
Then it occurred to me that it is possible to be something with the motherboard drivers, but I did not find anything useful for a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.
Help me, please. I ran out of ideas.

    Hi
Notebook supports the Realtek LAN card and the Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset (graphic card)
You can download the Vista 64bit drivers from the Realtek page and from Intel page.
The error code 10 means that the device (LAN card) cannot start or cannot be used because there is a compatibility issue between the device and driver.
In most cases a wrong driver has been used!
It could be also possible that some MS updates are needed to sort out this issue.
Check this MS knowledge base article:
+Description of Code 10-related errors that Device Manager generates on Windows XP-based computers+
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/
    There are some solution proposals.
But usually if you would use the right driver then the issue should be solved
Sorry but this is everything what I can say about this case

  • Satellite A300-24z - VAP - buttons illumination doesn't work properly

    Sorry about my English.
I have notebook Satellite A300-24z, Model number PSAG8E and Vista 32 bit.
I try to setup this driver and keys up the numbers are not having light.
I try to do this 3 times and still is not working.
    Can somebody help me?

To be honest I don't know what do you mean with format the windows with the folder of drivres by mistake.
Can you use these buttons? Do they work?
Do you have problem with illumination only?
Open Toshiba Assist (shortcut is on desktop) and go to optimize. I think there you can find option to start Toshiba hardware settings. if I am remembering well there is tab called illumination or so. Check if this option is enabled or disabled there.
Check also BIOS settings. In advanced option you can also find settings for ON/OFF illumination.

  • Satellite A300-211 - illumination button stopped working

    Hi
    How are you people ?
I have an annoying problem with my Toshiba Satellite A300-211.
I had windows vista home premium 32 bits installed on it but then i removed it and started using windows 7 ultimate 64 bits and a result of that one of the touch media buttons that is used to turn the led light on and off changed its function and started turn the sound on and off.
When i installed the value added package because the function key was not working the button stopped working. It does not turn the led light on or off or turn the sound on or off any more.
It is blinking but not working .
    Can any one help ?

    Hi
You can try to install the VAP using the Advanced Option.
During the installation in Advanced Option, you can unchecked the Toshiba Multimedia Button support and could try to install the VAP without this further option.
I read somewhere in this forum that this could help
However, usually the common VAP installation should fix this if it does not fix then I assume that the registry is corrupt as already mentioned by Tonny
So what to say using CCleaner might help, if not. Try to use Toshiba recovery

  • CD/DVD drive does not work - error code 39 on Satellite A300

    Good evening.
I've encountered a problem with my Satellite A300.
I can't get the disk drive to function.
Device manager says the driver is current. But also says it is corrupt "code 39".
I have tried downloading new drivers from Toshibas website but they all come up as code 39 unable to install. The first I noticed it was last night when I was installing Norton 360. I had the cd it worked once then nothing.
Has anyone ran across this before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I had the same issue and I found a solution here in the forum.
The problem is that your Windows registry is muddled up.
You should firstly access the device manager and should remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Secondly you have to start the registry and have to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Finally reboot the notebook and test the CD/DVD drive again!
    Bye
