Malfunctioning Mail.app after Security Update

I don't know if anyone else is having problems with Mail.app after the 09-2007 update for 10.5.1 but now when I start mail, no windows come up and I have to go to Window > Message Viewer to get the main window to appear. No new messages have come in since the update but I can still go to All Mail (using Gmail IMAP) to see my newest messages but they don't appear in the Inbox folder. I have tried restoring the application from a Time Machine backup but no avail. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a way to reset Mail.app to its factory settings? Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm getting the same issue with multiple apps, Mail, iChat, iCal, Address Book, etc. Didn't want to have to recreate all my mail settings, so I tried deleting the iCal plist, made no difference, it still crashed -

  • Mail crashes after security update

Anyone else getting repeated crashes in Mail since today's security update? I cannot get a draft out of the drafts folder without the app crashing. It's happened four times in a row.

    Hi Barry,
Thank you very much for your quick answer. I never installed Safari 3 beta. I ran the repair disk and repair permissions from my install DVD, and did it did find and fix errors. I also deleted com.apple.safari.plist as suggested, but neither Safari nor Mail will open yet without crashing immediately (I've also rebooted since doing so). Additionally, I found a suggestion on another website to try installing "Mac OSX Update Combo 10.4.10"--Software Update installed the non-combo version, whatever that means, but the Combo installer app also crashes when I try to start it. Do you have any other suggestions? What other information can I give that could help? These problems only occurred after my reboot this morning after installing the OSX and security updates. Anyway, thanks for your help.

  • Address Book & Mail crash after Security Update 2006 002 1.1

    hello,
I recently installed Security Update 2006 002 v1.1 on my iBook G4 and since then Address Book has crashed on launch (also when launching from the Dashboard and from within Mail), and Mail now crashes when pasting text into a new message. I tried repairing permissions with Disk Utility and checking the locations of the apps. So far, nothing's helped.
I've read similar problems on the discussions but haven't found any solutions. If I've missed something, please pass me a link - if not, any ideas?
    thank you
    scott

    Scott:
The best way to preserve your data, preferences and settings it to do an Archive and Install. When you use that method the installer places your User Folder with the data etc. in a Previous Systems Folder and you retrieve them following the installation. Of course, before any major operation like that it is wise to backup those things, anyway, just in case something goes wrong.
Here are some suggestions on installation:
Tiger: Archive and Install (with a Clean Install Option)
If you have the Full Retail Version of Tiger (computer specific disks for your computer) here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any third party applications you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update. Note: You must be in OS 9 to update firmware
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Utilities Menu and open Disk Utility.
To do a clean install see Notes below
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
    12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
    14. Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. WARNING! This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you back up anything you cannot afford to lose!
Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase.
This process will take a while, so this is a good time to take a long walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Trouble opening Adobe apps after Security Update

I just installed the 2012-1.1 security update and can't get InDesign CS5.5 or Photoshop CS3 to open. I know there were substantial issues with the initial update, but that the 1.1 fix was supposed to have, well, fixed everything. Any thoughts? Thanks.

None, a brody pretty much said it,
Backup, c boot and reinstall 10.6, then update to 10.6.8 and reinstall/update any programs not working.
Except that after you've got your issue resolved is to make a nice Carbon Copy Cloner (donations) to a blank external drive so in case of future issues you can option key boot off of it and erase and reverse clone.
No downtime trying to fix things.

  • No MS Office apps after Security Update 2007-009 1.1 (10.4.11 Universal)

On launch all MS Office apps do a "optimizing font menu performance..." at which point they start displaying error messages that "The font [e.g. Adobe Caslon Pro Bold Italic] is corrupt and should be removed. OK". You get an error message font by font for pretty much all the fonts on the Mac.
I haven't taken the time to let it go through the entire list of fonts to see what happens, as it's quicker to launch Word, etc. on a PC and get back to work.

    Hi Andrew,
Office will return all kinds of error messages for fonts that aren't really damaged when cache files are corrupt.
Close all running applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
    ~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
Next, go to the /Library/Caches/ folder and delete the subfolder:
    com.apple.ATS
Always immediately restart your Mac after removing cache files.

  • Mail 2.0.5 CRASHES ON OPEN after Security Update 2005-009(Tiger Client)

I'm trying to figure out how to fix this.
I rebooted into a techtool pro e-drive and repaired permissions (as well as some other repairs to the drive, etc), but it still is crashing.
I created a new user and opened mail just fine there.
So... it is something in my account. Not sure exactly what to do next?

I'm having the same exact problem. (See Mail 2.0.5 crashes when I get new mail). I deleted my preferences & my junk mail settings, to no avail.
A remarkable number of other people are posting with similar problems, just in the past week or so alone, and as far as I can tell, no one has figured it out. There is definitely a bug here. I have a hunch that it may be related to a recent software update. I'm going to post this to the other threads in hopes of garnering some attention from Apple.
For posterity's sake, I am connecting to a Gmail account, a POP account, and a .Mac account.

  • Applications not responding apparently after Security Update 2007-009

Mail, iTunes, Skype, MSN Messenger, MainMenu, Emule, Safari and god know what else aren't responding after Security Update 2007-009.
    Hi,
I recently purchased a new phone that does not work with macs, so I bought an application from Feisar to make it work. The application isn't freeware, so I think it is very unlikely that it bogused my system. Anyway, I installed the software, but only afterwards noticed it didn't work for my phone model with the USb interface, only through bluetooth, which I don't have. Moreover, and, in my opinion, more importantly, I also downloaded and installed security update 2007-009. After the update, I mandatorily restarted OS X and instantly noticed Mail, iTunes, Safari, Skype and Messenger not working. I click on them on the dock, they bounce (usually once, but it has occured to be more) and nothing happens. I don't get the little arrow below the icon. I see the applications in the applications folder, so they are not missing. I searched and searched on the internet and, apparently it is, to say the least, herculeanly complicated to downgrade from a software update. I tried to repair permissions and it didn't work. I tried the apple hardware test and everything came out perfect. I restarted many times and the same keeps happening.
So I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:
    Command: Installer
    Path: /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer
    Parent: WindowServer [114]
    Version: 2.1.9 (104)
    Build Version: 36
    Project Name: Installer
    Source Version: 1040000
    PID: 603
    Thread: Unknown

    Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work/Versions/A/WebCore
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/WebKit
I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack (which reapetedly said that I had a "fan failure!"), I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing.
The most likely line to follow here is the "fan failure" message in apple jack. I looked inside my g5 and all fans except for the one close to the Hard Drives aren't spining. I'm not sure this means they aren't functional or whether the temperature isn't high enough for it to be turned on. Temperature must be around 26-28 degrees Celsius today. There is nothing on the internet about that fan failure that's close enough to my case.
I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

Maybe it is a security update thing! I have had similar troubles with my CS2 and other simple apps like TextEdit not opening, just doing that single bounce... I have tried EVERYTHING and now, after reinstalling my entire system, have lost access to my own user profile.
I'm assuming you have tried starting up with your original system install disk in the computer, while you turn it on, hold the option key, it will allow you to run another hardware check, as well as to do an archive install if it comes down to that.
good luck, please let me know if you find out something else that might be causing the problems... i've noticed that alot of mac threads have similar probs listed.

  • Rosetta Problems after Security Update 2012-001

My crack team of sys admins and I have devised a method for resolving some of the issues regarding the Security Update 2012-001 and Rosetta.
    http://www.educate-it.org/content.php?130-Rosetta-Issue-after-Security-Update-20 12-001
Click this link for an Installer that will revert the files necessary for some Rosetta apps to run after the Security Update. This is a band-aid and is only recommended in emergency situations. Apple is currently working on a fix, but until that happens, we are stuck with reverse-engineering their update. I hope this helps those in distress from this update.

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 from the disk. Note: Does not touch your files and most programs, but backup your files regardless.
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

  • Rosetta crashes after Security Update 2006-003

The other day I installed Security Update 2006-003, and now a number of PowerPC applications crash the machine.
It's a funny crash, the mouse keeps moving and the capslock key goes on and off, but that's it. Nothing on the screen animates or updates. Windows will not move, dock does not do anything. cannot force quit or command-tab. The only option is to do a hard reset or hard shutdown.
    I found this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517111924138&query=rosetta+crash
    I hope it's fixed soon!
    Matt

    Hello!
I'm glad I found your post -- a brand new Intel Core Duo 20" iMac is doing the same for me after Security Update 2006-003.
What I've found on this end so far is that Norton AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh seems to aggravate the problem. I had a system that was running fine (complete with NAV10) before applying the 2006-003 update. At first I thought the problem might be due to user error--maybe NAV wasn't quite ready for Intel Macs, but Symantec says it is after you get version 10.1 from LiveUpdate. (I did.)
I finally had to erase the hard drive and reinstall the entire operating system from the provided restore discs. After I did that and got the latest software updates, I tried again with NAV. It still caused the same problem...a complete lockup.
The first time around, only NAV seemed to cause problems. Other PowerPC-native programs running in Rosetta seemed to be OK. This second time around any PowerPC-native app running in Rosetta (after the install of NAV10) would lock the machine up completely, except for the mouse pointer. (I have also noticed that the machine still responds to being pinged over the network, and that Apple Remote Desktop 3 says it is online. So the crash isn't stopping everything from working.)
So my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with Security Update 2006-003 and Rosetta, and it may be made worse by NAV10 for Macintosh. In any case, I'm going to steer clear of this update for now.

  • Can not update apps after IOS8 update on iPhone 4s

Can not update apps after IOS8 update on iPhone 4s
I can no longer update apps on my iPhone 4s after the IOS 8 update. The IOS 8 update took a very long time to complete, maybe 12 hours, and afterwards, it worked but updating packages were very slow. Package updates have since been problematic and about 4 days ago, it stopped being able to update any packages. I click on them to update and they never make any progress. I have 2.8 Gbytes free and I keep deleting more and more packages, pictures, etc. It seems like, from the amount of stuff that I have deleted, I should have more than 2.8 Gbytes free.
Is anyone else having this kind of problem?

16GB iPhone4: Go to Settings, scroll down to iTunes & App Stores and touch. At the top of the next page it shows: Apple ID. Touch this. Select Sign Out. Your Apple ID will go away. Re-enter Apple ID and password. Try App Store again.
Other solutions were to go to Settings:General:Date&Time and turn off auto-update, then change date to next year. This didn't work for me, nor a lot of other users on the forums. It took reading a lot of threads to find the log-out, log-in solution. Even on the official Apple Website all I saw was: Make sure your connection is working, battery is charged, desktop is plugged in when you try to sync. OK I exaggerate, but with all the users posting this problem, you'd think they'd post their solutions when they work with a Tech Help call.

  • Keyboard, keypad glitch after Security Update 2015-002

The overview is: keyboard problems developed shortly after Security Update-002 on Mavericks 10.9.5. I tried OS update to Yosemite; didn’t fix the problem. Reverted OS back to 10.9.5 using Time Machine for a backup date prior to the Sec Update; this fixed the problem.
Mac mini5,2, 16gbram, wired Apple Pro Keyboard (M7803, circa Mac Cube), Apple Wireless Keyboard, LMP Wireless Numeric Keypad, Apple Magic Mouse (A1296?) iPad 2
Within the past 2 days, Apple BT keyboard alpha keys stopped typing. During troubleshooting, I discovered that problems extended to BT keyboard, BT keypad, and wired spare USB extended keyboard. The BT keyboard pairs and works fine with my iPad. Here’s a list of the glitches:
    Apple Wireless keyboard:
      alpha keys NO INPUT
      space key NO INPUT
      Delete key works
      Force-Quit sequence works
fn, cntrl, opt, Apple, arrow keys, shift all work
      top row keys work
    LMP Bluetooth keypad:
      keypad: 1..4, 6..9 NO INPUT
keypad "5" registers a mouse click, NO INPUT
keypad "0" jumps to mouse cursor first press only, NO INPUT
      =/*-+ and arrows work
    Apple Pro USB extended keyboard:
num keys: 1..4, 6..9 NO INPUT
keypad "5" registers a mouse click, NO INPUT
keypad "0" jumps to mouse cursor first press only, NO INPUT
alpha keys and number row keys work
      keypad =/*-+ and arrows work
Besides proving the wireless keyboard works on my iPad, I reset PRAM with no improvement. (I had no problems with my Bluetooth Magic Mouse.)
Next step was OS upgrade via Software Update to Yosemite. All above glitches remained.
Next, I reverted to Mavericks 10.9.5 using a Time Machine OS backup dated prior to 9Mar15, the date of Security Update 2015-002. After this, both keyboards and keypad resumed working. Seems clear that the Security Update is the culprit, no?
I reported the issue to Apple via Support Chat.
I would like to eventually upgrade back to the Security Update and Yosemite but not when it breaks my keyboard. Perhaps I could skip over the Sec. Update and go to Yosemite? Any suggestions?

    Update:
The day after I reverted to 10.9 to repair keyboard glitches caused by Security Update 2015-002 (and persistent in Yosemite), Apple released Security Update 2015-004. Such a quick succession of -004 on top of both -002 and -003 was the hint to me that -004 contained fixes to the glitches.
I crossed my fingers and jumped back on the install-wagon. Yosemite 10.3 completed its second installation and my keyboards/keypads remain functional!
