Malloc errors

Some time after updating to 1.5.1 Aperture has developed the dreaded "slowness", showing me the occasional beach ball on my iMac 24" with 2GB RAM.
Upon viewing some photos (no apparent pattern) the following messages appear in my console log:
Aperture(622,0xa000cfc0) malloc: * vm_allocate(size=4221227008) failed (error code=3)
Aperture(622,0xa000cfc0) malloc: * error: can't allocate region
Aperture(622,0xa000cfc0) malloc: * set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug
Has anyone else experienced this in relation with new "slowness"?
Does anyone know of anything I can do to fix it?
Would a library rebuild be of any help, do you think?
(I have 20.000+ images in my library - managed and referenced.)
Yours sincerely,
chaos pilot
iMac 24" | 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yep, I've already reported it.
If the size given in the error message is the amount of bytes Aperture tries to allocate it's actually trying to allocate about 4 gigs of memory.
Surely, that's a lot - even for a memory-hungry app! :-D

Could it be a hardware problem?? Should I try reinstalling with pacifist?

Sorry, I do not know what those error messages mean. Until a more knowledgeable user comes along install the following (if you have not already done so):

  • Slightly damaged airport card, unstable connection, & malloc errors? Fixes?

    Hello!
I've got a 500 mhz iMac G3, running 10.3.9 with 256 MB of ram - and may add more soon. It has an original Airport card installed, via the Airport adapter. This card has a dent in one of the sides, but seems to power on fine.
Here's the problem: if I click on the Airport symbol in the menu bar, the iMac can see our home network with the Airport card installed - so I know the card is at least working in this regard. If I select the network and enter the WEP key, it sits there for a moment before giving a "There was an error connecting to the AirPort network * SSID *." box. Clicking "Try again" hasn't helped. Interestingly, the "Console.log" log shows a list of malloc errors:
"* malloc[@@@]: error for object 0x3----0: Double free", where the dashes are various hex values, and the @@@ differs by application: Attempting to connect via Internet Connect gives a @@@ of 385, while attempting to connect via Network Setup Assistant gives a @@@ of 329, and attempting to connect via the airport menu bar icon gives a @@@ of 208. These errors seem to appear when I type the WEP key in.
To see if the airport card was broadcasting, I tried to setup a computer-to-computer network from the iMac, then connect to it from my G4 (400mhz, Tiger, 1.5 GB RAM, Original Airport card). The network initialized OK, but the G4 could not see it. Entering the SSID manually into the Internet Connect application still gave a "There was an error connecting to SSID" box. I then noticed that the iMac kept "disconnecting" and "reconnecting" to its own network every 10 seconds or so, as if the Airport card kept resetting. I also tried creating a network on the G4, then connecting to it from the iMac to see if it could join and if the malloc errors kept showing up - it coudn't join or see the network, but there were no malloc errors in the console!
This is the same problem that occurred when I put the card into another old iMac. Therefore, I believe that it's a problem with the individual card, not the system. At the same time, the fact that the memory allocation errors occur when I enter the WEP key - and not at other times - is a little odd. I've assumed that the dent in the card was the problem before, but now I'm beginning to suspect a firmware issue with the card itself.
    So, the questions:
    A. Is there a firmware update for the card?
    B. Is there anything else I can try? I will try to setup an open network to test the card then.
    C. If the damage to the card is the culprit, then the card is useless and must be replaced, correct?
    D. Is there somewhere I can find an original airport card for (well) under the $150 or so you usually find it online? I am aware that they are old and hard to find.
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan

See my post about using the WaveLan card out of an old graphite "flying saucer" Airport Base Station. My iMac accepted one as an Airport card. The old ABSes are cheap since they don't work with new releases of OS X any more.

  • What is "malloc error break to debug" and how do i stop it?

Sometimes when I am running an application for about ten minutes I get a message that says in the console.  "Malloc error break to de-bug" (something like that) after that I normally crash.  Does anyone know what that is and how to fix it??

If the internal temperature gets too high, you will see the following.

    Thanks Denis,
I was using check -all & was in right track to catch the exact point. I found that and fixed it out. Error was coming from a `free(var);` statement. where var is a pointer variable of type struct. problem is in code
coz I set var++ before free(var). Now i have removed that var++ and it is working fine without any memory error.
Although I couldn't understand the below line suggested by you in previous reply.
"check for multiply freed memory, writing past array bounds etc."
    Thanks a lot;

  • "Unsupported Image Format" malloc error BUG

I've been having this issue for weeks now; not sure what triggered it, but lately, it happens after editing somewhere between 20 - 50 photos. It happens with files from my Nikon D1, Nikon D70, and Nikon D300. It happens to both RAW files and JPEGS.
The issue is, while going through a project, performing edits to the photos and then moving to the next one, after doing a set of photos, eventually, Aperture will give me the dreaded burgondy "Unsupported Image Format" in the main viewing window. That error will pop up for every photo, until I fix it, by quitting Aperture and restarting it; once I do that, the problem goes away, until it pops up again in another 20 - 50 photo edits.
When the error does occur, something similar to what is below gets written to /var/log/system.log. This is most definately a bug in Aperture. Obviously not everyone is running into it, but Google tells me that enough people are hitting it, so there is obviously some combination of software and hardware configurations that causes this bug to trigger. There is a memory allocation bug in Aperture. The below messages make that statement indisputable. Apple, please fix this!

Make sure you use Aperture's "send feedback" to report this bug. Apple doesn't necessarily read these forums on a regular basis (see the TOS); they are user-to-user forums.

Also, none of the 61 lines of error messages mention anything about the system used. Should we be guessing? Okay ... is it .. an Atari ST 520?

  • Lua malloc errors

Not sure where this topic belongs. Please move it accordingly.
I'm working on a fairly large project making use of lua, and was getting weird memory corruption bugs I was having issues tracking down. It looked like these bugs were coming from lua, but I was somewhat in disbelief.
    Then I ran this:
    valgrind -v lua -e "print('hi')"
For a bit of clarity, I compiled the latest lua so I would have some symbols:
    valgrind -v ./lua -e "print('hi')"

    ==2277== ERROR SUMMARY: 2 errors from 1 contexts (suppressed: 6 from 6)
I am unsure of where to go from here. I get these errors both in 64 and 32-bit Arch. Another user in the #lua channel using gentoo does not have these errors, which leads me to believe this is an arch-specific issue.
Can someone smarter than myself shed some light on this? It looks like lua, for some reason, isn't playing nice with Arch's glibc. I'm leaning towards perhaps this is an Arch glibc issue, but not sure.

I'm running a couple of lua scripts which import files into NoteCase Pro. These scripts always stall (about 2/3 of the way through) on Arch when I import a large number of files (say more than 500), but they work when I import the files in smaller batches (so not a data problem). The same scripts work on Windows XP and other Linux distros tried, but always stall on Arch so that the NoteCase process has to be killed.
So, your suspicion about Lua problems and Arch is very interesting, and I have also been in touch with the author of NoteCase Pro to discount other possibilties.
May try as you have done and experiment with Valgrind a bit.

  • Strange ssh/malloc error

I use ssh all the time on my office computer. Starting today, I get the following message when I try to ssh:
ssh(1301) malloc: * Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x1; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug
I'm guessing this has something to do with the 10.4.6 update, but I'm not 100% sure. Despite the message, the ssh connection goes through just fine. But that doesn't make the message any less annoying, and I'd like to get rid of it. Any ideas what might be going on and how I might fix it?
To confuse the issue more, I get the same error on my lab machines, but not on my iBook.
    Thanks in advance!

OK, you asked for it! If anyone can make any sense of this and help me diagnose and fix it, I'd very much appreciate it!!!

  • How to fix terminal: login(4720,0x7fff7aa09300) malloc: *** error for object 0x7fcb92e07120: pointer being freed was not allocated *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

When i try to open the Terminal I get this error. How can I fix it?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • ITunes Artwork Screen Saver Not Working. Empty black screen. Garbage collection, memory leak issue? ... malloc: auto malloc[]: attempted to remove unregistered weak referrer 0x ...

    Hey Smart Apples,
My iTunes Artwork screen saver is not working. After reboot, then selecting iTunes Artwork in System Preferences, just a black screen appears in the preview, as well as when pressing Test, and when allowing the screen saver to start on it's own. The error message in Console says...

    also...

The memory address location at the end of each line is different everytime I preview the screen saver.
    I've tried...
        deleting ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.* files
making sure each album has a cover in iTunes
running Get Album Artwork in iTunes
        recreating symbolic link ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music -> ~/Public/iTunes Music/
    ... but doesn't help.
All other screen savers work... my usual is Flurry, and it works too, but gives invalid framebuffer operation under Console.
    Nothing running/checked under Sharing.

    Does anyone have a solution?
Environment: Mac OS X (10.7.2), Macbook Pro (late 2008)

So it turned out that the cause of the problem wasn't as complicated as I thought...
I had a few songs that were not added to the iTunes library, instead referenced from other locations on my hard drive.
Specifically, if you bring up the Get Info window of a song, under Summary > Where, it may show a different path than your usual iTunes Media folder location, set under Preferences.
    E.g. Where: ~/Desktop/downloaded_song.mp3
I guess, this happens when you drag a song into your iTunes instead of adding it to the library, and apparently, causes problems with the Artwork Screen Saver.
    Solution:
    To correct it,
For those songs, go to File > Add to Library...
Then find and select the song file.
That's all I had to do to get the screen saver working... All your songs have to be added to your iTunes Library.
I think my brother was messing around with my playlist... I hope Apple nails a better way to lock-unlock/secure OS X soon (proximity sensor, biometric 3D face recognition, unique voice recognition, soul recognition, etc.).
That malloc error message still shows up; that must be an unrelated issue with the screen saver.
I hope this helps out all those suffering through the same issue with their iTunes Artwork Screen Saver.
