Malrotated images: corrupt exif tag still broken

I exported some images to mail. I was surprised to learn they were not rotated correctly. Turns out Image Capture still mangles EXIF rotation tags from my Canon camera; it creates a duplicate tag when it autorotates. I usually use Graphic Converter to import, but a bug with the latest version meant I had to use Image Capture.
Now my darned images have duplicate tags, which messes up the orientation in iPhoto and mail.app.
This has only been a bug for about 2 years. I think Apple may never fix it.

Have you updated to iPhoto 5.0.4. That update addresses the auto-rotation issue. However, I believe it's only for subsequent imports. Files that are in the library before that update was applies will still be incorrect.
You can try the following:
1 - make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library, selecting the two options to rebuild thumbnails.
That may get your rotations back to the correct state. But you'll have to have 5.0.4 installed first.

  • Safari save image to iPhoto library still broken?

I have also run across the problem where I choose (right click in Safari) to save an image to the iPhoto library and the only thing that happens is that iPhoto opens. The image is not saved. I have done this on 8 different machines now, all running 10.4.2 with the latest Safari and iPhoto and all do the same thing. I see this has come up for discussion here before and it doesn't look like Apple has solved this yet. Does anyone have any idea of how this can be fixed?

Hi Arthur, I've been trying to figure this issue out for MONTHS. I gave up a while ago but have now found the solution! At least for me this works, some steps may not be necessary but this is what worked for me:
    1) Backup your iPhoto Library and then move it to the desktop (or just move it to the desktop)
    2) Backup your iPhoto LIbrary plist file (located in ~user/library/preferences or move it to the desktop (its called: com.apple.iPhoto.plist)
    3) Delete iPhoto from the Applications folder and reinstall JUST iphoto from the iLife 05 disc
    4) Repair permissions with the Disk Utility App
    5) Launch iPhoto and then quit (this will create a new library folder and plist file
    6) Download the iPhoto 5.0.4 updater and install, repair permissions again
    7) Then, move your backed up (or if you just moved it to the desktop) iPhoto library folder back to the Pictures folder replacing the new one that was created and do the same for the plist file you backed up
    8) Finally, launch iPhoto again and it should work, let me know, good luck.

  • My playback screen in iMovie '11 is always blank or a still, broken picture. How do I fix this?

    Picture of my screen: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/88/screenshot20120623at929.png/
Sometimes it ends up like this: a still, broken picture: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/688/screenshot20120623at929.png/
I don't know what happened. It was fine until I tried to play back a video I was making and it didn't want to. Imported videos play fine, but when I drag a clip to the editing part it doesn't play.
I also made a short project a while ago, but no matter what I tried I couldn't delete it. I also couldn't play it again or even access the editing screen
I don't know if I imported too many videos, or have too many videos in the Project Library, but the playback screen is just not working!
The audio is completely fine, however.
    What happened?

    Hi
Have no clue - but You might try some of this
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • EXIF tag used as 'Description'

What EXIF tag does iPhoto 09 use as description when I import JPGs? With iPhoto 08 it worked when I set the 'Object Name' before importing but since I upgraded to 09 that does no longer work
I can still see the description for photos I imported when I still had 08, all that I imported with 09 have no description set.
    Any ideas?

  • Reading EXIF Tag Attributes

Image FIles have Properties like Width, Height, Duration, Bit Rate, Date Created, Date Modified, Date Picture Taken etc.
I need to read these attributes ( EXIF Tag ) of these Image Files before uploading them and storing them separately in the SAP system. Does anyone know how this can be achieved thro ABAP please
    Thanx in adavance

I doubt you'll find something like that in ABAP. If I were you, I would try to execute a command-line third-party application from ABAP.
You can use for instance [ExifTool|http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/]. I use it to work on my personal photo collections and works very well reading exif tags information, and can be used in both Linux and Windows, in case you need to save it within the Application Server.
    Cheers,
    Andres.

  • Import EXIF tag to new App Yosemite Photos

    Hi
I have custom metadata EXIF tag in my photos, how can i import to keywords in the new App Photos ?

    Thanks

  • Is anybody else seeing image corruption in Aperture Library?

    Folks:
I am new to this forum, but I have encountered a serious issue and I need to know if anybody else is seeing this. If not, then that would point at my platform as the issue rather than the app. What I am seeing is images being trunicated after import from the SD card. The preview is correct (whole image) but part of the image is gone and not recoverable. Additionally, I am seeing corruption of images when I use the Highlights and Shadows function -- it introduces lines into the image. On one case, I saw that using duplicate versions of a single image, attempting to adjust the second version also corrupted the first version. If I export the image, the issues are still there.
Has anybody else seen this issue? I am on V1.5.6 with the ProTools update installed.
    Thanks in advance.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Caid, San Diego

I have a similar problem. I have been shooting on a new EOS 40D, and after 3500 frames the images appear corrupt when I import them into my computer. I have put up examples on my iDisk public folder
    idisk.mac.com/ThorvardurGodi-Public
I have tried a new memory card, CF, to no avail. The reason why I am not certain it is the camera, is that corrupt images on my computer, are fine in the camera LCD, even when I zoom into them. Therefore, I have a difficulty explaining if the fault is not in the system or somewhere on the way to the hard disk.
Please if anyone knows this problem, or a solution to it, please respond.
    Best
    Thor

  • Display format for Exif Tag: ExposureTime

    Hello,
I'm a user of Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0, in which the image editor component displays "File Info" (Exif and XMP information) embedded in the image file using the Adobe Photoshop Information Panels, which are XMP files (
    DOCTYPE panel SYSTEM "http://ns.adobe.com/custompanels/1.0").
Unfortunately, my camera embeds the Exif tag
ExposureTime instead of the Exif tag
    ShutterSpeedValue.
In the camera1.txt XMP panel file, the ShutterSpeedValue field is defined as (the Adobe Forum Web UI will break the formatting)
    static_text(name: '$$$/AWS/FileInfoLib/Panels/Camera1/ShutterSpeed=Shutter Speed:', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);
    edit_number(format: apex_shutterspeed,  precision: 2, format_addin: '$$$/AWS/FileInfoLib/Panels/Camera1/ShutterSpeedFormat=^0 sec',locked: true, horizontal: align_fill, xmp_ns_prefix: 'exif', xmp_namespace: 'http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/', xmp_path: 'ShutterSpeedValue');
    I changed this to:
    static_text(name: '$$$/AWS/FileInfoLib/Panels/Camera1/ShutterSpeed=Shutter Speed:', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);
    edit_number(format: decimal,  precision: 4, format_addin: '$$$/AWS/FileInfoLib/Panels/Camera1/ShutterSpeedFormat=^0 sec',locked: true, horizontal: align_fill, xmp_ns_prefix: 'exif', xmp_namespace: 'http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/', xmp_path: 'ExposureTime');
in order to display the correct Exif tag.
But how can I display the usual reciprocal shutter speed format ("1/160th sec") instead of the decimal format ("0.0063 sec")?
    Any help much appreciated!

Don't know about the display format problem ... but there seems to be another quirk. Obviously you are confusing shutter speed with shutter speed value. These are two different things. The shutter speed value is the inverted base-two logarithm of the shutter speed in seconds. Example: shutter speed = 1/128 s --> shutter speed value = 7.
By the way, there's a similar difference between aperture and aperture value; the latter is twice the base-two logarithm of the f-stop number. Example: aperture = f/8 --> aperture value = 6.

  • EXIF Tag problem / unknown lens

    Hi everyone,
I imported a few raw files in lightroom 3.4.1 (mac version, but this is irrelevant), all of them are from Sony cameras and different lenses.
From the command line, exiftool always reports the correct camera model/lens, but lightroom often does not.
From the exiftool documentation, it seems that Sony has a specific EXIF tag for the lens model, called "LensID".
However when LR generates the xmp, it does write some lens information in it, but I cannot understand where it reads from.
For example, I run a sample query on a raw file, which LR correctly identifies, asking all possible lens-related fields:
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.ARW
    Lens ID                         : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens Type                     : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
and in the corresponding xmp file I have:
      <aux:Lens>DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA</aux:Lens>
      <aux:LensID>46</aux:LensID>
and if I query directly the xmp file (which exiftool can do):
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.xmp
    Lens                            : DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens ID                        : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
So, the LR-generated "Lens" field in xmp is a *different* string.
If I repeat the same procedure on some different raw files (from different sony cameras), I get different results: most times the xmp contains no lens field, and LR says "unknown lens", even if the ARW does contain the same information shown above.
If I manually fix the xmp with exiftool and I force LR to reload metadata from files, then I get the lens identified.
Is it possible to fix this situation somehow?

In my opinion, it is not possible to get a reliable lens identification with Sony/Minolta cameras unless you have a lens lookup list which fits your actual lens collection. So that means that you either have to buy lenses which fits the lookup list in your identification tool, or use an identification tool which allows you to modify the lookup list. The latter option excludes using Lightroom for lens identification, as far as I know. I don't know about exiftool.
Old Minolta IDs have been reused by Sony when they released similar lenses, which I guess is acceptable but can result in Sony lenses being recognized as Minolta or vice versa. Even worse is that third party lens makers have released a lot of lenses where they use a more or less random ID from the Minolta lenses.
Here is an example of lenses using ID 25611:
    Minolta AF 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro
Sigma AF 300mm F4 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO
Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Asph
    Tokina AT-X AF 300mm F4
    Tokina AT-X AF 400mm F5.6 SD
    Tokina AF 730 II 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F7.2 APO
(And now I just discovered that this list is incomplete, since the exiftool link posted by ixtab alos lists an ID 25611 Sigma 800 mm which is not in my list.)
To some extent, the correct lens can be picked from the list if combining ID, max. aperture and focal length from the EXIF. If ID is 25611, max. aperture is 4.5, and focal length is 500, it can only be a Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO.
But if ID is 25611, max. aperture is 5.6, and focal length is 300, there are actually 4-5 different lenses which match. With a little luck you only own one of those lenses and can give that lens the highest priority in the lookup list. That is why it is so important to be able to modify the lookup list.
I use a command line tool called alphalensinfo which does just that: Uses the combination of ID, max. aperture and focal length and allows you to modify the lookup list. The information is written into an .xmp file which is imported with the image into Lightroom.
I know that exiftool can do something similar, as stated earlier in the thread, but I have no experience with using it for this purpose (even though I actually do use exiftool in the same batch process to rectify the Orientation tag of the photos).

  • Missing songs / won't add or import files / corrupt id3 tags?

    Hey Folks,
I can't seem to get some songs/files to add or import to itunes...
My computer crashed while itunes was open. When I rebooted the itunes library was corrupted and all playlists and songs were missing.
    ... no problem...
I'll just add the itunes folder right... Which is what I did.
Problem is now a good 20% of the songs are missing. They are on the harddrive in the itunes music folder, but won't import or add to itunes.
I suspect maybe it has something to do with corrupt ID3 tags?
Anyone know the answer to this mystery?
    Thx

    I assume adding artwork is a tag-affecting change - but I can't
add on this track - it just reverts to the black image.
I take it the tags themselves are hidden. I see no direct
editing options for them although I read than they can be
set to different types - and there are utilities available to
    clean, fix, re-set, etc.
Ok, now I see your edit - this isn't an mp3, it's .aiff.

  • Display All Running Task image corrupted or tampered with

My task scheduler reports of a number of corrupted task images. Now I want to display all running task on the server and it say the task image is corrupted or tampered with.
How do I recreate this task or repair it? Is there another way of viewing all task, running and inactive ones? What is causing these task image corruptions because my backup tasks are all now corrupted.

    Hi,
Before going further, would you please let me know if you do some changes (such as: install updates, configure or modify certain setting) before this issue occurred?
Please refer to the solutions that Ronnie Vernon provided in the following similar question. And then check if this issue can be solved.

  • View Options Still Broken

View options was broken in Lion (some carried over, others became a white background with greyed out options). I was hoping against hope that this would get fixed in mountain Lion, but my User folder's View Options, for example, is still broken. What will it take to fix this? Can anyone help?

Can you explain what it is you think is broken?
Ok, I think I might have figured out what you are describing.
Sorry to inform you, but you can't set any backgrounds if you have an arrangement set. Arrangement must be set to None in order to set a background color or picture. And, it can only be done in Icon view.
There is nothing "broken." Just too difficult to implement, I imagine.

  • Image Corruption in ACR/Bridge CS 6:

Shooting 1D mk lV, all image shot in RAW; Mac Pro Dual Core Xeon, ATI Radeon HD 5770. Downloads are via card reader.
Bridge/ACR will randomly take the first image I open and corrupt it. It could be per set of images or just the first image of the day. This is usually not a problem as my first images are usually just test/set up shots. This morning it screwed me royally.
I edited a shoot last night and put my highlight images into a separate folder. I then did ACR corrections and ran a batch for logo'd sample images and sent them to the client.
This morning I start up my computer and open the highlight image folder, select the 5 highlights, click on 'open in camera raw' and they pop up and after 2 seconds the first image corrupts.
I have tried copying the image to other drives as well as to my Mac Pro laptop and it does the same thing every time. Purging cache for selection doesn't work.
Copying the original in finder to another drive doesn't work (this has worked in the past).
This has happened in the past and I did find a fix of deleting a certain file in the adobe library (and it recreates it). I did save the page where I found the fix but haven't been able to find it.
I have re-created the ACR cache as well as the Bridge caches. After recreating the caches and clicking 'purge cache for selection' it briefly pops back the original and then corrupts again.
I've tried increasing cache size and various cache options.
When I view the file in finder, the tiny thumbnail shows the correct image but the preview shows corrupted image.
If I view the image in Canon's Digital Photo Professional, it pops up for a second normally and then corrupts itself.
I'm guessing it's a deep cache issue...I have well over a million images that have passed through CS6. I regulary clean my caches but am I missing something somewhere???
    Any suggestions from anyone???

Doubleclicking on the files in Bridge causes that quicktime or VLC or itunes (depending on the file format) will open that, but bridge does not handle anything?!
Bridge CC and Bridge CS6 both handle my .mov files from EOS 1Dx and iPhone without any problems. The show in the preview window and can be played with sound in this same window. (MacPro with 10.8.4)
Purging cache is what it is, it dumps the previous cache of the preview and forces Bridge to create a new one, nothing else is set to default.
First try a reset of preferences and hold down option key while restarting Bridge and choose reset prefs. then try again.

  • VJO in not defined & image corrupt or truncated, only in FF & also safe mode but ok in private browsing

VJO not defined & image corrupt or truncated
I am getting this error when the computer renders some websites. It happens with ebay & on youtube. It shows the text but no pictures or background. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and Firefox 4.0.1 it also happens in the newest version of FF & in safe mode , I have installed the latest Java runtime with no change ,but interstingly if I turn on "in private browsing" FF runs OK.
I have run Firefox in safe mode, I have uninstalled completely using the APPS own uninstaller & then cleaned up all the files left behind with a 3rd party uninstaller I have updated Firefox to the newest release & rolled back to v4.0.1,I have disabled all addons & AV & malware apps (just for a minute)I have even tried a system restore. Also the "VJO not defined" only happens with FireFox & not with IE.interestingly FireFox runs fine if I enable "in private browsing"
